To commemorate this triumph, we invite everyone to bring their icons to church, have it blessed and proceed to walk around our church processional in remembrance of the rightful veneration of icons to the church. Page2 Great Lent is a period of time when the people are more conscious of their spiritual character. The passages of the Gospels and the Epistles, the hymnology and prayers, the spirit of the Church all endeavor to help the Christian cleanse himself spiritually through repentance. Repent is the first word Jesus Christ spoke in His proclamation to the people, as the epitome of His Gospel. Repentance is the main motivation of the Christian which acts to free him from sin. One s recognition of his sin, his contrition over it and lastly his decision to make an about-face change of his attitude are the steps of repentance. For one can learn to recognize iniquities from the Bible and the teachings of the Church. During the period of Lent the Christian is called to self-examination and self-control by the radiance of the Event of the Resurrection of Christ. This is why the Church designated such a period of time be observed before this great feast day. Fasting in its religious setting is abstinence from food, always in relation to a religious event or feast. Fasting in itself has no meaning in the Christian Church, but has a role in the attainment of Christian virtues. It is not to be accepted as a mere custom without a spiritual purpose. Fasting is understood as a means of temperance and sobriety, especially in relation to prayer, devotion and purity. It is also understood to be related to giving alms to the poor. The roots of fasting in the Christian Church are to be found in the Old Testament and the Jewish religion, both for certain days and certain foods. As a general rule, fasting precedes a religious feast. Many verses in the Old Testament refer to this. In continuation of the practice of fasting, the Christian Church determined the period of Lent to depend upon the great Feast of Easter, as set forth by the First Ecumenical Synod in 325. The Church determined the day on which the Resurrection of Christ would be celebrated, according to the conditions that existed at the time of this Event. Thus, the Synod set forth that the great Feast of Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday, after the full moon, after the Spring Equinox (March 21), and always after the Jewish Passover. Thus, this great Feast is a moveable date in the calendar. Therefore, Great Lent, which depends upon the date of Easter, also is moveable, each year being celebrated on a different date, (Sunday), depending on the above conditions. The four weeks which precede Great Lent are considered preparatory, a forerunner to Lent. These four weeks, along with the eight weeks of Lent, are characterized by the Church as Triodion, meaning thrice-hymns, a name which has no bearing on the substance of Lent itself. Spiritual love in the Lord Jesus Christ Father Angelo J. Michaels, Protopresbyter Message from Father Angelo Η Ανακοίνωση του Πρωτοπρεσβυτέρου Η Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή είναι μια περίοδος όταν οι άνθρωποι έχουν συναίσθηση του πνευματικού τους χαρακτήρα. Αυτές οι τέσσερις εβδομάδες μαζί με τις οκτώ εβδομάδες της Σαρακοστής, χαρακτηρίζονται από την Εκκλησία ως Τριώδιο, ένα όνομα το οποίο δεν έχει καμία σχέση με την ουσία της Σαρακοστής η ίδια Ο πατέρας Angelo J. Michaels Marina Corodemus Dino Kusulas Mary Lou Rivera Sylvia Kress - Director of Advertising PRESIDENT S MESSAGE MARCH 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Despite all the positive changes we have made in the church over the last 15 months, there are a few who still cannot bring themselves to be happy our church is thriving. To those, I convey the sermon of St. Paisios: St. Paisios: Be the Bee and not the Fly Be the Bee- Some people tell me that they are scandalized because they see many things wrong in the Church. I tell them that if you ask a fly, Are there any flowers in this area? it will say, I don t know about flowers, but over there in that heap of rubbish you can find all the filth you want. And it will go on to list all the unclean things it has been to. Now, if you ask a honeybee, Have you seen any unclean things in this area? it will reply, Unclean things? No, I have not seen any; the place here is full of the most fragrant flowers. And it will go on to name all the flowers of the garden or the meadow. You see, the fly only knows where the unclean things are, while the honeybee knows where the beautiful iris or hyacinth is. As I have come to understand, some people resemble the honeybee and some resemble the fly. Those who resemble the fly seek to find evil in every circumstance and are preoccupied with it; they see no good anywhere. But those who resemble the honeybee only see the good in everything they see. The stupid person thinks stupidly and takes everything in the wrong way, whereas the person who has good thoughts, no matter what he sees, no matter what you tell him, maintains a positive and good thought. St. Paisios of Mt. Athos, Good and Evil Thoughts, Spiritual Counsels III: Spiritual Struggle. So next time you hear someone speak ill of our church tell them to be a BEE and Not a FLY. Page4 "SATURDAY OF SOULS" You are encouraged to submit the names of family and friends who have passed to Father Michaels, for the special general memorial services conducted on four designated Saturdays called "Saturdays of the Souls." (Psiho sabbadon). This year three of those Saturdays fall on: Pre-Great Lent then during Great Lent dates of: Saturday, March 5, 12 and 19. Parishes are encouraged to offer this cycle of services (akolouthia) and ensure they have enough kollyva (boiled wheat) to offer for the memorial of all those who have gone before us. This year we will be sending offering envelopes for the return of names of the dead for whom you wish Father to say prayers. We ask respectfully, that you return your names on the sheet enclosed along with a donation to the church to continue the services that occur of these three Saturdays during Lent for your loved ones. There is no set amount. Please give as your heart dictates. On April 9 th at 10 AM Father Michaels, along with members of the Parish Council and GOYA, will visit Alpine Cemetery in Perth Amboy to conduct a Memorial Service. Small icons of St. Demetrios will then be put on the graves of parishioners of our church who have fallen asleep to honor their memories. All are invited to attend. Fasting During the Great Lent NISTEIA Orthodox Christians should practice fasting during the Great Lent. During these periods, certain foods are prohibited. These are, in order of frequency of prohibition, meat (including poultry), dairy products, fish, olive oil and wine. Fruits, vegetables, grains and shellfish are permitted throughout the year. Of course, the Orthodox Church never reduces the practice of fasting to a legalistic observance of dietary rules. Fasting that is not accompanied by intensified prayer and acts of charity, inevitably becomes a source of pride. The Church also recognizes that not everyone can fast to the same degree, and assumes that individual Christians will observe the fast prescribed for them by their spiritual fathers. This year our Church will encourage fasting when you can along with works of charity and daily prayers with your prayer rope saying the Jesus prayer 10 minutes a day. a) All Wednesdays and Fridays, except for those noted below; b) The day before the Feast of Theophany (January 5); c) Cheesefare Week (the last week before the Great Lent, during which meat and fish are prohibited, but dairy products are permitted even on Wednesday and Friday); d) Great Lent (from Clean Monday through the Friday before Lazarus Saturday, olive oil and wine are permitted on weekends) Father Michaels to Retire After almost 20 years here at St. Demetrios, and 35 years of faithful service to the Church, Father Angelo Michaels has announced his retirement from full time service. Father and Presbytera will continue to live in Woodbridge and will always be beloved members of our church. A retirement lunch is currently being planned for May 15 at the church-details to follow.
Page5 WALL OF LOVE For a limited time, commemorative bricks will be available for a Meditation Garden at St. Demetrios Church. Bricks with the names of current family, or those who have passed, will adorn the wall next to the new mosaic of Archangel Gabriel. Honor a beloved family member, or pay tribute to a friend or mentor. The bricks are precision engraved to last a lifetime. Since 1917, when St. Demetrios opened its doors, it has been a place of worship for the central New Jersey Orthodox faithful. This meditation garden will overlook the water of the Raritan Bay surrounded by the history of our present and past loved ones. Their memories shall truly be eternal in this most special area. Adorning the garden will be the mosaic of St. Gabriel. Gabriel, One of Seven Archangels. The name Gabriel means God is Strong, God is powerful, God is mighty. Gabriel, the Greatest of all Messengers Gabriel was chosen as the special angel who had the sole privilege of carrying the message of the prophet who would go before the Lord to prepare his way, to prepare a people fit for the Lord (Lk 1:17), John the Baptist. Gabriel s most privileged duty was to announce the birth of Jesus (Lk 1:31), the Son of the Most High, the one who would take the throne of David, who would rule over the house of Jacob, whose kingdom would never end, the Son of God. No other angel has ever brought such an important announcement. Gabriel stands alone as the greatest of all angelic messengers. The entrance portico has a limited number of premium bricks available in two sizes. Support for the Meditation garden provides: 1).The first outdoor prayer location for parishioners to speak with God in a natural setting. 2).
