BIOTECHNOLOGY BULLETIN 2010 6 650224 The Roles of Astrocyte in Nervous System Diseases Wang Lei Faculty of Life Science and Technology Kunming University of Science and Technology Kunming 650224 Abstract Activated astrocyte can produce and release neurotransmitters neurotrophic factors and cytokines which could involve in pathogenesis of nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer's disease Parkinson's disease epilepsy ischemia Astrocyte may have a protective effect or a toxic effect on neuron and then take part in the pathogenesis of nervous system diseases This review dealed with studies in recent years of the role of astrocyte in nervous system diseases and research prospects were proposed.
