cocκtails by the sorrento 14 Cocκtails by the Sorrento Pina Colada The Pina Colada was introduced on August 16, 1954 at the Caribe Hilton s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico by its alleged creator, Ramon Manchito Marreto. Apparently, the hotel management had expressly requested that Monchito mix a new signature drink which would delight the demanding palates of its starstudded clientele. Monchito accepted the challenge and after 3 intense months of blending, shaking and experimenting, the first Pina Colada was born. Mojito The Mojito was a favorite drink of author Ernest Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway made the bar called La Bodeguita del medio famous as he became one of its regulars. He also wrote My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita.

cocκtails by the sorrento 15 Daiquiri Sex on the Beach The earliest known invention of this cocktail and its name dates back to 1987 in Fl. Lauderdale, Florida. A national distributor had just begun selling a new product, peach schnapps, in the fall. A young bartender named Ted Pizio working at Confetti s mixed peach schnapps, vodka, orange juice and grenadine. When Pizio began to sell the sweet and tasty beverage he was asked what it was called. On the spot, Pizio began wondering why thousands of people came to Fl. Lauderdale for spring break: They came for the beach and for sex. Sex on the Beach he replied, and as the drink gained fame that spring, thousands of college students returned to their areas of the country and began asking their local bartenders to mix up a Sex on the Beach. The name Daiquiri is also the name of a beach near Santiago, Cuba, and an iron mine in that area, and it is a word of Taino origin. The cocktail was supposedly invented about 1900 in a bar named Vanus in Santiago, about 23 miles east of the mine, by a group of American mining engineers. Originally the drink was served in a tall glass packed with cracked ice. A teaspoon of sugar was poured over the ice and the juice of one or two limes was squeezed over the sugar. Two or three ounces of rum completed the mix. The glass was then frosted by stirring with a long-handled spoon.

cocκtails by the sorrento 16 Caipirinha Mai Tai The word caipirinha means little countryside drink in Portuguese. Although there s no definitive version of how the cocktail was invented, its story is combined with that of cachaca - the spirit that Brazilians drink a staggering 200 million litres of, every year. It seems likely that the caipirinha evolved as workers looked for a palatable way to drink the cachaca they were helping to produce. Maita i is the Tahitian word for good, but the drink is now spelled as two words. The initial story of its invention is that a trader named Victor J. Bergeron created it one afternoon for some friends, who were visiting from Tahiti. One of those friends tasted it and cried out: Maita i roa ae! (literally very good or out of this world) - hence the name. Cosmopolitan The origin of the cosmopolitan is somewhat disputed. It is likely that the drink was created independently by different bartenders since the 1970s. It gained popularity in the 1990s. The cosmo was then further popularized among young women by its frequent mention on the television program Sex and the City, where Sarah Jessica Parker s character, Carrie Bradshaw, commonly ordered the drink when she was out with her girlfriends.

The Confucius Institutes (CI) are not-for-profit educational organisations that have been set up for the promotion of the Chinese language and culture around the world. Every CI operates through collaboration with a local university and a founding partner in China. The Confucius Institute Headquarters provide some funding, teachers and educational material. The Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus was established in early 2014 and is a result of a partnership between the University of Cyprus, the Beijing Institute of Education and the Confucius Institute Headquarters in China. The inauguration ceremony took place at the University on 27 October 2014. What are the aims and objectives of the Institute? The aim of the Confucius Institute is teaching of Chinese language and dissemination of Chinese culture both to students and the general public. Apart from language teaching, the Institute also promotes educational and cultural exchanges and research collaboration and we are looking towards opening new frontiers of cooperation in terms of student and academic exchanges. Our mission is to collaborate with the public and private sector, with companies and the academic community in both China and Cyprus, in order to develop stronger educational and cultural ties between the two countries. Will you be offering scholarships, in the same vein as other institutions? The Confucius Institute Headquarters introduced the 'Confucius Institute Scholarship programme' in 2009 to provide financial support to students, academics and Chinese language teachers around the world. How do you intend to promote the activities of the Institute in Cyprus? We have a range of programmes and events related to Chinese language, culture, education, research arts and enterprise. These events will take place every year and contribute to bolstering understanding of Cypriot culture within the Cypriot business community, the public sector and academia. Are there thoughts on opening other Institutes in other countries? The Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus is delighted to be part of the greater family of 460 Confucius Institutes in 120 countries around the world.

Τα Ινστιτούτα Κομφούκιος (ΙΚ) είναι μη κερδοσκοπικές εκπαιδευτικές οργανώσεις που έχουν συσταθεί για την προώθηση της Κινεζικής γλώσσας και του πολιτισμού σε όλο τον κόσμο. Κάθε ΙΚ δημιουργείται μέσα από τη συνεργασία μεταξύ ενός τοπικού πανεπιστημίου και ενός ιδρύματος-εταίρου στην Κίνα και το Confucius Institutes Headquarters παρέχει μερική χρηματοδότηση, καθηγητές και εκπαιδευτικό υλικό. Constantinos Christofides 20 All eyes on the future Constantinos Christofides: Rector of the University of Cyprus How would you rate the standard of the University of Cyprus bearing in mind that it is a relatively young university? The University of Cyprus was established in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. It was founded in response to the growing educational needs of the Cypriot people, and is well placed to fulfil the numerous aspirations of the country. Currently, the University is comprised of eight Faculties and 22 Departments, offering a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research study programmes to more than 7,000 enrolled students. The University employs over 900 people in its academic and administrative staff, and more than 500 young researchers. The University is a vigorous community of scholars engaged in the promotion and distribution of knowledge. Despite its brief history, it has earned the respect of the international academic community and the appreciation of Cypriot society. According to Webometrics, UCY is now in the top 4% of the best Universities of the world (ranked 830 out of a total of 22,000 Universities worldwide and 296 amongst 3,379 Universities in the European Union). The recent economic crisis and ensuing hardship present challenges to the University in its desire to contribute to the further development of Cypriot society. Therefore, the University aims to take an essential and leading role in all efforts to manage the financial crisis. The University of Cyprus As an institute of tertiary education do you feel there are areas of study or research that you can expand upon? As I mentioned previously the University of Cyprus covers a wide range of under and postgraduate programs of study. However we aim to add new faculties and departments by 2020, including a Faculty of Fine Arts, a Department of Geology and Department of Chemical Engineering. How do you envision the future of tertiary education in a unified Cyprus after the prospective solution to the Cyprus Problem? I believe that a university could play the role of an opinion maker and that science unites people. In my view, the country will be reunited not through partisan electoral agendas but in classrooms, in think-tanks, in the library. One day I expect students from all Cypriot communities in our classrooms - Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins. Because the power of Cyprus lies in its cultural pluralism. The University of Cyprus is also engaged in techno-economic studies, not just at the educational level. Are you currently preparing an important study which is of interest to the general public? I believe that a university could play the role of an opinion maker and that science unites people. has been finding opportunities to further develop and support Cyprus during this crisis. It has been bringing in more research funding, receiving private and public donations for its infrastructure and has employed more researchers. Finally, I would like to note the fact that soon the University of Cyprus will be the first University in the world that will be completely dependent on Solar Electricity. With its two photovoltaic parks, Apollo & Phaethon it is a prime example of sustainable development. Indeed the development of techno-economic feasibility studies constitutes an important part of the research conducted at the University of Cyprus. Besides conducting basic and applied research, the University has started to branch out into a third component, the utilization of research results for economic gain. This has been achieved through a close, sincere and effective collaboration between the University s Research Centers and other stakeholders, primarily from the economic and industrial world. The two primary Centers developing technoeconomic feasibility studies are the Economics Research Centre (CypERC) and the Center for Banking and Financial Research.

The first one focuses on policy-oriented research in economics and the second on computational finance and economics. And of course the strengths that these Centers today enjoy are due to the profound contributions made by each of their members. Recently, study at CypERC was further diversified through the pursuance of research on specialised topics such as long-term energy planning during economic recession, comparisons of the distributions of "law of one price" deviations among European countries and the study of the causes of economic crisis in Cyprus. Constantinos Christofides Rector of the University of Cyprus It seems that the youth of today, (most, but of course not all) do not have a grasp of the richness of the Greek language. How do you feel about that? This is definitely the case in many instances and it is a source of sadness for me. With this in mind I recently wrote a letter to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Cyprus. I believe this problem can be solved through radical changes to the school education that our pupils receive. We must ensure the quality of education and teachers through various ways. Φαίνεται πως η νεολαία της Κύπρου (οι περισσότεροι αλλά όχι όλοι φυσικά) δεν κατανοούν τον πλούτο της ελληνικής γλώσσας. Πως νιώθετε για αυτό; Αυτό το θέμα σίγουρα σε πολλές περιπτώσεις, μου προκαλεί μεγάλη θλίψη. Είναι με αυτό ακριβώς το θέμα υπόψη που έγραψα πρόσφατα μια επιστολή στον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας. Πιστεύω πως αυτό το πρόβλημα μπορεί να λυθεί με ριζικές αλλαγές στη σχολική εκπαίδευση. Πρέπει να διασφαλίσουμε την ποιότητα της εκπαίδευσης και των εκπαιδευτικών με διάφορους τρόπους.

Constantinos Christofides 22 Πως θα αξιολογούσατε το επίπεδο του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου έχοντας υπόψη πως είναι ένα σχετικά νεαρό πανεπιστήμιο Το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου ιδρύθηκε το 1989 και δέχθηκε τους πρώτους φοιτητές του το 1992. Σκοπός της ίδρυσής του ήταν να απαντήσει στις αυξανόμενες εκπαιδευτικές ανάγκες των κύπριων και να είναι σε θέση να εκπληρώσει τις πολυάριθμες φιλοδοξίες της χώρας μας. Προς το παρών το Πανεπιστήμιο αποτελείται από οχτώ σχολές και 22 τμήματα, προσφέροντας ένα ευρύ φάσμα προπτυχιακών, μεταπτυχιακών και ερευνητικών σπουδών σε περισσότερο από 7000 φοιτητές. Το Πανεπιστήμιο εργοδοτεί πάνω από 900 άτομα για ακαδημαϊκούς και διοικητικούς σκοπούς και πάνω από 500 νεαρούς ερευνητές. Αποτελείται από μια δραστήρια κοινότητα επιστημόνων που ασχολούνται με την προώθηση και τη διανομή της γνώσης. Η πρόσφατη οικονομική κρίση και οι δυσκολίες που έρχονται ως αποτέλεσμα αυτής της κρίσης παρουσιάζουν διάφορες προκλήσεις για το Πανεπιστήμιο σήμερα, το οποίο επιθυμεί να συμβάλει σημαντικά στην περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη της Κυπριακής κοινωνίας. Ως εκ τούτου, το Πανεπιστήμιο έχει ως στόχο να πάρει ένα σημαντικό και πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο σε όλες τις προσπάθειες διαχείρισης της σημερινής χρηματοπιστωτικής κρίσης. Το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου έχει προχωρήσει στην εξεύρεση ευκαιριών για την ανάπτυξη και στήριξη της χώρας κατά τη διάρκεια της δύσκολης αυτής περιόδου. Έχουμε εργαστεί σκληρά για να αποκτήσουμε περισσότερη χρηματοδότηση για ερευνητικούς σκοπούς, εργοδοτούμε ακόμη περισσότερους ερευνητές και δεχόμαστε κρατικές και ιδιωτικές δωρεές για τις υποδομές του Πανεπιστημίου. Τέλος, θα ήθελα να σημειωθεί το γεγονός ότι σύντομα το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου θα είναι το πρώτο πανεπιστήμιο στον κόσμο το οποίο θα λειτουργεί πλήρως με την ηλιακή ηλεκτρική ενέργεια. Τα δύο φωτοβολταϊκά μας πάρκα, ο Απόλλωνας και ο Φαέθων, είναι ισχυρά παραδείγματα της δεσμευσής μας στην αειφόρο ανάπτυξη. Ως ίδρυμα τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης, νιώθετε πως υπάρχουν ακόμη τομείς σπουδών ή έρευνας που μπορείτε να διευρύνετε; Όπως ανάφερα και προηγούμενος, το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου καλύπτει ένα ευρύ φάσμα μεταπτυχιακών προγραμμάτων. Ωστόσο, στοχεύουμε να προσθέσουμε ακόμη περισσότερες νέες σχολές και τμήματα μέχρι το 2020 συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών, το Τμήμα Γεωλογίας και το Τμήμα Χημικών Μηχανικών. Πως οραματίζεστε το μέλλον της τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης σε μια ενωμένη Κύπρο μετά τη λύση του κυπριακού; Πιστεύω πως τα πανεπιστήμια είναι opinion makers και πως η επιστήμη μας ενώνει. Κατά την άποψή μου, η χώρα θα επανενωθεί, όχι μέσα από τις ατζέντες των κομμάτων μας αλλά μέσα στις αίθουσες διδασκαλίας, στις δεξαμενές σκέψης (think tanks) και στις βιβλιοθήκες. Μια μέρα αναμένω φοιτητές από όλες της κοινότητες της Κύπρου στις τάξεις μας Ελληνοκύπριοι, Τουρκοκύπριοι, Μαρωνίτες, Αρμένιοι και Λατίνοι. Άλλωστε η δύναμη της Κύπρου βρίσκεται στο πολιτιστικό πλουραλισμό της. Το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου συμμετέχει επίσης σε τεχνοοικονομικές μελέτες, όχι μόνο στο εκπαιδευτικό επίπεδο. Προετοιμάζεται σήμερα κάποια σημαντική μελέτη που θα ενδιαφέρει το ευρύ κοινό; Πράγματι, η ανάπτυξη των τεχνοοικονομικών μελετών αποτελεί ένα σημαντικό μέρος της όλης έρευνας που διεξάγεται στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου. Εκτός από τη διεξαγωγή βασικής και εφαρμοσμένης έρευνας, το Πανεπιστήμιο έχει αρχίσει να επεκτείνεται και σε ένα τρίτο πυλώνα την αξιοποίηση των ερευνητικών αποτελεσμάτων για οικονομικό κέρδος. Αυτό έχει επιτευχθεί μέσα από μια στενή, ειλικρινή και αποτελεσματική συνεργασία μεταξύ των Ερευνητικών Κέντρων του Πανεπιστημίου και άλλους ενδιαφερόμενους φορείς, κυρίως από τους τομείς της οικονομίας και της βιομηχανίας. Τα δύο κύρια κέντρα ανάπτυξης τεχνοοικονομικών μελετών σκοπιμότητας είναι το Κέντρο Οικονομικών Ερευνών και το Κέντρο Τραπεζικών και Χρηματοοικονομικών Μελετών. Το Κέντρο Οικονομικών Ερευνών επικεντρώνεται στην οικονομική πολιτική ενώ το Κέντρο Τραπεζικών και Χρηματοοικονομικών Μελετών εστιάζεται στην υπολογιστική χρηματοδότηση και την οικονομία. Φυσικά, τα πλεονεκτήματα που απολαμβάνουν σήμερα αυτά τα κέντρα είναι λόγω των σημαντικών εισφορών των μελών τους. Πρόσφατα, οι φοίτηση στο Κέντρο Οικονομικών Ερευνών έχει διαφοροποιηθεί ακόμη περισσότερο μέσα από την εξειδικευμένη έρευνα σε θέματα όπως το μακροπρόθεσμο σχεδιασμό ενέργειας κατά τη διάρκεια της οικονομικής ύφεσης, οι συγκρίσεις των παρεκτροπών του «Νόμου της Μίας Τιμής» στις χώρες της Ευρώπης και η μελέτη των αιτιών της οικονομικής κρίσης στην Κύπρο.
