16 ST. NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH MAY 2013 Volume 41 - Issue 4 THE CANON FATHER S MESSAGE ( Excerpts of Sermon May 12, 2013) My Dear Spiritual Children, Χριστός Ανέστη!!! You that have fasted and you that have disregarded the fast, rejoice today! The table is richlyladen; feast royally, all of you! The calf is a fatted one; let no one go away hungry! Let all partake of the feast of faith. Let all receive the riches of goodness. Just one week ago we shared these words at the Resurrection Service. It was a glorious culmination of weeks of preparation. So many came together to worship and glorify our Lord. The Chantor, the Choir, who canted with me, the ladies who decorated, the Parish Council Members, and the men and women who came together to make sure all the details were covered for all the services. I thank them, but you can thank them too! I was pleased that although, yet too man us take lightly the significance of receiving the Holy Light and staying through the Resurrection Service, attendance is better that it had been. We need to be thinking It s Easter. I have to be in church. My kids need to learn. We need to be in church on this glorious celebration. I fear that we are breeding a generation that will be weak in the faith for every layer that we remove. We wouldn t thing of staying home from school or work because we are a little tired. We must ask ourselves Why is it so easy to pass on church? How tired are we really? You think my feet don t hurt... A special dedication service will be held today after the. The Parish has chosen to honor the late Andy Georgas on this day with the placement of a street sign in his honor on the entry of the Gyro Drive- Thru. It is with a heavy, but gladden heart that I carry out this task today. It was just a few shorts months ago this past fall that Andy, along with others, was working at the Gyro drive thru. We exchanged our usual jokes and commentaries but when we separated, I had no idea how final it would be. Any had a vision for set up and process that he brought to the festival a few years back. Today we honor Andy s initiative to take a risk and start the concept of the Gyro Drive-Thru which has (Continued on page 3)

Throughout his life, the church had been a mainstay for him. His sincere faith in God and concern for the church were exemplified through the sharing of his many talents and are reflected in the love he passed on to his wife and son. We celebrate his life, his creativity and his daring as an entrepreneur on this day. I hope I told him enough how I felt about his support. Unfortunately, as we too often do, we wait a little too long and it becomes a little too late to tell someone how we feel about them. We focus so much on critiquing and analyzing, comparing and contrasting that we forget to compliment and commend. How much more productive our lives might be if we could just keep this in mind. I think of how many parishioners we he lost too soon ; especially on this Mother s Day. Moms and Dads plucked away from their family in an untimely fashion, each of them with their own special qualities and strength, each of them missed greatly in the overall culture of our parish. So we come together to honor Andy today, and it should also bring us to think about taking a moment to share a few kind words with each other as we go about our work. 4 13 Feast of the Ascension of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ The feast of the Ascension of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on the fortieth day after the Great and Holy Feast of Pascha (Easter); since the date of Pascha changes each year, the date of the Feast of the Ascension changes. The feast is always celebrated on a Thursday. The feast itself commemorates when, on the fortieth day after His Resurrection, Jesus led His disciples to the Mount of Olives, and after blessing them and asking them to wait for the fulfillment of the promise of the Holy Spirit, He ascended into heaven. The story of the Ascension of our Lord, celebrated as one of the Twelve Great feasts of the Church, is found in the book of the Acts of the Apostles 1:3-11. It is also mentioned in the Gospels of Mark (16:19) and Luke (24:50-53). The moment of the Ascension is told in one sentence: He was lifted up before their eyes in a cloud which took Him from their sight (Acts 1:9). and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). It is also at this time that the disciples were directed by Christ to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:20). As the disciples watched, Jesus lifted up His hands, blessed them, and then was taken up out of their sight (Luke 24:51; Acts 1:9). Two angels appeared to them and asked them why they were gazing into heaven. Then one of the angels said, This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him going into heaven (Acts 1:11). The icon of The Ascension of our Lord is a joyous icon. It is painted with bright colors. Christ is shown ascending in His glory in a mandoria. A mandoria is a design which is almond-shaped or round. Inside the mandoria is the figure of a holy person. Christ blesses the assembly with his right hand. In his left is a scroll. The scroll is a symbol of teaching. This icon shows that the Lord in heaven is the source of blessing. In addition, Jesus is the source of knowledge. Christ made his last appearance on earth, forty days after His Resurrection from the dead. The Acts of the Apostles states that the disciples were us that Christ continues to be the source of the teaching and message of the Church, blessing and guiding those to whom He has entrusted his work. in Jerusalem. Jesus appeared before them and commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father. He stated, You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now (Acts 1:5). The Theotokos occupies a very special place in this icon. She is the center of the icon, immediately below the ascending Christ. The gesture of her hands is gesture of prayer. They are moving about, talking to one another and looking and pointing towards heaven. The entire group, the Theotokos and the disciples represent the Church. The icon of the ascension includes some who did not witness the Ascension. St. Paul is shown to the left of the Theotokos, but we know that he was not present at the Ascension. At that time, St. Paul did not yet believe in Jesus. But he became a Christian and one of the greatest Apostles and missionaries of the Church. St. Paul stands in the same position with his hands block his eyes as he did at the time Jesus appeared to him on the day of his conversion on the road to Damascus. The icon expresses the sovereignty of Christ over His Church; He is its Head, its guide, its source of inspiration and teaching; it receives its commission and ministry from Him, and fulfills it in the power of the Holy Spirit. Hymn of the Feast (Apolytikion) O Christ our God, You ascended in Glory and gladdened Your disciples by the promise of the Holy Spirit. Your blessing assured them that You are the Son of God, the Redeemer of the world. Feast of Holy Pentecost The Feast of Holy Pentecost is celebrated each year on the fiftieth day after the Great and Holy Feast of Pascha (Easter) and ten days after the Feast of the Ascension of Christ. The feast is always celebrated on a Sunday. The Feast commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, a feast of the Jewish tradition. It also celebrates the establishment of the Church through the preaching of the Apostles and the baptism of the thousands who on that day believed in the Gospel message of salvation through Jesus Christ. The Feast is also seen as the culmination of the revelation of the Holy Trinity. The story of Pentecost is found in the book of The Acts of the Apostles. In chapter two we are told that the Apostles of our Lord were gathered together in one place. Suddenly, a sound came from heaven like a rushing wind, filling the entire house where they were sitting. Then, tongues of fire appeared, and one sat upon each one of the Apostles. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as directed by the Spirit (Acts. 2:1-4). This miraculous event occurred on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, celebrated by the Jews on the fiftieth day after the Passover as the culmination of the Feast of Weeks (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:10). The Feast of Weeks began on the third day after the Passover with the presentation of the first harvest sheaves to God, and it concluded on Pentecost with the offering of two loaves of unleavened bread, representing the first products of the harvest (Leviticus 23:17-20; Deuteronomy 16:9-10). Since the Jewish Feast of Pentecost was a great pilgrimage feast, many people from throughout the Roman Empire were gathered in Jerusalem on (Continued on page 6)
6 11 (Continued from page 5) this day. When the people in Jerusalem heard the sound, they came together and heard their own languages being spoken by the Apostles (Acts 2:5-6). The people were amazed, knowing that some of those speaking were Galileans, and not men who would normally speak many different languages. They wondered what this meant, and some even thought the Apostles were drunk (Acts 2:7-13). Peter, hearing these remarks, stood up and addressed the crowd. He preached to the people regarding the Old Testament prophecies about the coming of the Holy Spirit. He spoke about Jesus Christ and His death and glorious resurrection. Great conviction fell upon the people and thy asked the Apostles, What shall we do? Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39) The Bible records that on that day about three thousand were baptized. Following, the book of Acts states that the newly baptized continued daily to hear the teaching of the Apostles, as the early Christians met together for fellowship, the breaking of bread, and for prayer. Many wonderful signs and miracles were done through the Apostles, and the Lord added to the Church daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:42-47). The icon of the Feast of Pentecost is known as the The Descent of the Holy Spirit. It is an icon of bold colors of red and gold signifying that this is a great event. The movement of the icon is from the top to the bottom. At the top of the icon is a semicircle with rays coming from it. The rays are pointing toward the Apostles, and the tongues of fire are seen descending upon each one of them signifying the descent of the Holy Spirit. The building in the background of the icon represents the upper room where the Disciples of Christ gathered after the Ascension. The Apostles are shown seated in a semicircle which shows the unity of the Church. Included in the group of the Apostles is Saint Paul, who, though not present with the others on the day of Pentecost, became an Apostle of the Church and the greatest missionary. Also included are the four Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John holding books of the Gospel, while the other Apostles are holding scrolls that represent the teaching authority given to them by Christ. The Apostles in the upper room filled with the Holy Spirit. In the center of the icon below the Apostles, a royal figure is seen against a dark background. This is a symbolic figure, Cosmos, representing the people of the world living in darkness and sin, and involved in pagan worship. However, the figure carries in his hands a cloth containing scrolls which represent the teaching of the Apostles. The tradition of the Church holds that the Apostles carried the message of the Gospel to all parts of the world. In the icon of Pentecost we see the fulfillment of the promise of the Holy Spirit, sent down upon the Apostles who will teach the nations and baptize them in the name of the Holy Trinity. 10 7 ΨΥΧΟΣΑΒΒΑΤΟ SATURDAY OF THE SOULS May 22, 2013 Υπέρ ανπαύσεως For the Repose (Continued from page 6) tained in unity through the presence and work of the Holy Spirit, that the Spirit guides the church in the missionary endeavor throughout the world, and that the Spirit nurtures the Body of Christ, the Church, in truth and love. This Great Feast of the Church is celebrated with the of St. John Chrysostom on the Sunday that is the fiftieth day after the celebration of Pascha. The Liturgy is conducted on the day of the Feast, and is preceded the evening before by a Great Vespers service and on the morning of the Feast by the Matins service. On the day of the Feast a Vespers service is conducted that includes the kneeling prayers. These prayers mark the beginning of the practice of kneeling during the Liturgy at the time when the Holy Gifts of bread and wine are consecrated as the body and blood of Christ. The practice of kneeling has been suspended during the Paschal season. On Monday following the Feast, the is conducted in commemoration the All-holy and Life-creating and All-powerful Spirit, Who is god, and One of the Trinity, and of one honor and one essence and one glory with the Father and the Son. Hymn of the Feast (Apolitikion) Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fisherman all-wise, by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them drawing all the world into Your net. O Loving One, glory be to You. All Saints Day The Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of All Saints on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The need for setting aside one day in the ecclesiastical calendar to honor all saints was felt right after the Persecutions. Obviously, and in spite of the fact that the Church was already celebrating the memory of well-known saints, it was impossible to know, individually and by name, all those who gave themselves for the faith in Christ. And though the day of commemoration varied among the various local Churches, the faithful of the Christian Church at large felt the need not only to commemorate the life and martyrdom of those athletes of the new faith, but also to establish a communion with them. The present day of celebration of the feast of All Saints goes back to at least St. John Chrysosotom, who in one of his homilies in Constantinople says that the commemoration of the Martyrs of the Universal Church was observed on the first Sunday after Pentecost. All Saints Day has always been observed not only as an opportunity for the Church to project to her living membership Christian ideals to be emulated, but also as an opportunity to establish a unity between the Triumphant Church of Christ in heaven and His militant one on earth.
8 9 Πίστις καί ευχαριστιακό Δείπνο Η πίστη στόν Χριστόν είναι τό ένδυμα γάμου τό οποίο πρέπει νά έχουμε ενδυθή γία νά παρακαθήσουμε στό τραπέζι τού βασιλικού γάμου. «Ιμάτιο τών χριστιανών...είναι η πίστη στό Χριστό», λέγει ο Μέγας Βασίλειος. Χωρίς αυτό τό ιμάτιο είμαστε γυμνοί από τήν παρουσία τού Χριστού Η πίστη μάς πλησιάζει στόν Κύριο. Χωρίς τήν πίστη, καί άν ακόμη τοπικά είμαστε κόντα στόν Χριστό, στήν πραγματικότητα είμαστε μακριά Του. Όπως συνέβη μέ τόν απόστολο Πέτρο, ο οποίος όταν βάδισε επάνω στήν θάλασσα δέν μπρόρεσε νά αντιμετωπίστη τήν βιαιότητα τού ανέμου ενώ ήταν δίπλα στόν Χριστό. «Δέν ωφελεί καθόλου νά είναι κανείς τοπικά κόντα στόν Χριστό, εάν δέν είναι κοντά Του μέ τήν πίστη». Οι αισθήσεις τής πίστεως είναι βεβαιότερες τών αισθήσεων τού σώματος. Μέ τόν λόγο Μακάριοι οι οφθαλμοι υμών, ότι βλέπουσι, ο Χριστός «δέν μακαρίζει τήν εξωτερική όραση. Διότι αυτή από μόνη της δέν βλέπει τά θαύματα, η εσωτερική όραση τά βλέπει. Οι Ιουδαίοι είδαν έναν πρώην τυφλό καί έλεγαν : «Αυτός είναι, αυτός δέν είναι, άς καλέσουμε τούς γωνείς του». Τούς ακούς πού αμφιβάλλουν...ενώ εμείς, οι μή παρόντες, δέν λέμε «αυτός είναι, αυτόε δέν είναι», αλλά «αυτός είναι». Κατάλαβες ότι δέν βλάπτει καθόλου η απουσία όταν υπάρχουν οι οφθαλμοί τής πίστεως, κάι ότι δέν ωφελεί καθόλου η παρουσία όταν δέν υπάρχουν οι οφθαλμοί τής πίστεως; Διότι τί ωφέλησε τούς Ιουσαίους τό ότι είδαν: Τίποτε. Εμείς είδαμε πιό καθαρά από εκείνους» Οι οφθαλμοί τής πίστεως είναι περισσότερο χρήσιμοι γιά νά δούμε καί νά γνωρίσουμε τόν Κύριο, παρά οι οφθαλμοί τού σώματος. Γι αυτό ο Λειτουργός, κρατώντας στά χέρια του τόν Χριστό, μάς καλει νά Τόν πλησιάσουμε μετά φόβου Θεού, πίστεως, καί αγάπης. Κι εμείς προσερχόμενοι στήν ευχαριστιακή Τράπεζα, ομολογούμε: Πιστεύω, Κύριε, καί ομολογώ, ότι σύ εί αληθώς ο Χριστός, ο Υιός τού Θεού τού ζώντος...έτι πιστεύω ότι τούτο αυτό εστί τό άχραντον Σώμα Σου, καί τούτο αυτό εστί τό τίμιον Αίμα Σου.» Ο ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος αναφέρει ότι όταν ο Χριστός έφθασε εις τήν Γενησαρέτ, επιγνγνόντες Αυτόν οι άνδρες του εκείνου απέστειλεαν είς όλην τήν περίχωρον εκείνη, καί προσήνεγκαν αυτώ πάντας τούς κακώς έχοντας, καί παρεκάλουν αυτόν ίνα κάν μόνον άψωνται τού κρασπέδου τού ιματίου αυτού, καί όοι ήψαντο διεσώησαν. Η θεία Λειτουργία ιερουργείται εκεί όπου ευρίσκεται ο Χριστός. Κοντά Του προσέρχονται όλοι οι άρρωστοι, οι κοπιώντες καί πεφορτισμένοι. Τώρα όμως, πρίν ακόμη προφθάσουν οι άρρωστοι νά παρακαλέσουν τόν Ιατρό γιά νά Τόν αγγίσουν, τούς πλησιάζει Εκείνος καί τούς προσκαλεί, όχι (Continued on page 9) (Continued from page 8) μόνο νά Τόν αγγίσουν, αλλά καί νά τραφούν από Αυτόν. Μάς προτρέπει ο ιερός Χρισόστομος: «Άς αγγίσουμε κι εμείς τό άκρο του ενύματός Του. Ή μάλλον, άν θέλουμε, ολόκληρο Τόν έχουμεδικό μας. Διότι καί τό ίδιο τό Σώμα Του είναι ενώπιόν μας. Όχι μόνο τό ένδυμά Του, αλλά καί τό Σώμα Του, ώστε όχι μόνο νά Τό αγγίσουσμε, αλλά καί νά Τό φάγουμε καί νά χορτάσουμε. Άς πλησιάσουμε, λοιπόν, μέ πίστη, αφού όλοι μας έχουμε κάποια ασθένεια. Διότι άν αυτοί πού άγγισαν μόνο τό άκρο τού ενδύματός Του, έλαβαν τόση δύναμη, πόσο περισσότερη δύναμη θά λάβουν εκείνοι πού Τόν έχουν ολόκληρο μέσα τους; Τό νά πλησιάσουμε όμως τόν Χριστό μέ πίστη, δέν σημαίνει νά λάβουμε απλώς τήν θεία Κοινωνία, αλλά καί τό νά τήν αγγίσουμε μέ καθαρή καρδιά, σάν νά προσερχώμαστε στόν ίδιο στόν ίδιο τόν Χριστό...Πιστέψτε, λοιπόν, ότι καί τώρα τελείτε τό ίδιο εκείνο Δείπνο, στό οποίο καί ο Ίδιος ήταν παρών. Διότι σέ τίποτε δέν διαφέρει εκείνο (τό Μυστικό Δείπνο) από αυτό τό μυστήριο τής θείας Ευχαριστίας» Η αγία Τράπεζα είναι η φάτνη πού φιλοξενεί τόν Χριστό. «Άν πλησιάσουμε μέ πίστη, οπωσδήποτε θά Τόν δούμε νά ευρίσκεται επάνω στήν φάτνη. Διότι η Τράπεζα αυτή υποκαθιστά τήν φάτνη. Καί εδώ (στήν αγία Τράπεζα) πραγματικά θά τοποθετήθη τό Σώμα τού Δεσπότου, όχι σπαργανωμένο όπως τότε πού γεννήθηκε, αλλά περιβεβλημένο ολόκληρο μέ τό Άγιο Πνεύμα.» Μέ τήν θεία Κοινωνία εμείς οι ίδιοι γινόμαστε φάτνη γιά τόν Χριστό. Κοινωνούμε καί φιλοξενούμε μέσα μας Εκείνον πού είναι «η ενυπόστατος πίστις». Γι αυτό αμέσως μετά τήν θεία Κοινωνία ψάλουμε: Εύρομεν πίστιν αληθή, αδιαίρετον Τριάδα προσκυνούντες.»
