THE SOURCE June / July 2014 Issue # 6-14 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA Graduations, Pentecost, and Goals This year Pentecost falls around the same time as many graduation ceremonies. I find this interesting because, in a way, Pentecost was graduation for the Apostles. After the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them, they embarked on a new mission for Christ. Their training, so to speak, was over. Post Pentecost (or postgraduation in my analogy), it was time to get the word out about Jesus. The Apostles were doing what they d been so well trained for by Christ and empowered to do by the Holy Spirit. Jesus had called them to be fishers of men. They went out and made a huge difference in the lives of three thousand people the first day (Acts 2:41) and eventually affected the lives of countless millions of people around the world. Their work continues in our churches, and through each and every one of us believers, to this day and into the future. Good training and the right energy make a huge difference, but they have to be coupled with good goals. For maximum effectiveness the goals we choose should be informed by the will of God. Which brings me to the question for all of you, and particularly for the recent college and high school graduates: What is the will of God for your life? or What is your God-given mission? If you don t know, start now trying to figure it out. It really doesn t matter if you are young or old, the question still remains: What is God calling you to do with the limited time you have remaining? I can imagine the response right at this point: But Father, how do we figure this out? Excellent question. Many times I ve wished for a message from God, unambiguously telling me what to do. But, I ve not had any angelic visions, nor emails in my inbox, with the sender marked Almighty God! Even so, some suggestions follow. There are clues in the Bible about how to attract the grace of God, and how to know what God wants from our lives. The Bible works a lot better if it is approached with prayer. So, I suppose Step One and Step Two are praying to God for Him to reveal His will to you, and getting more familiar with Scripture. Hint: Look up the stories of the prophets Samuel and Elijah. Biblegateway.org or blueletterbible.org Both of these saints heard from God in quiet times. So, Step Three might be finding some time for God when you can be still and quiet. If you ve been to our summer camp, you have at least experienced this at camp. I know quiet time is hard to find. Probably you will have to make time for this. It is definitely worth it. Sometimes a prayer rope and repeating the Jesus prayer (Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.) is helpful in quieting the mind. (continued on next page)
THE SOURCE JUNE/JULY 2014 Page 2 Sometimes other people see what our mission is much more clearly than we do. Perhaps parents or other trusted relatives, your Godparents, or your clergy might have some insight if you ask them. Step Four, then, is asking the advice of trusted elders who have a heartfelt desire to help you find your way in life. I doubt many readers of this newsletter are leading lives that are out of control or full of sin. Still, we re called to perfection (see Matt 5:48). So, if you are a little off target, repent. If you are doing something you know to be less than perfect, stop. If you know you are heading away from God s will for your life, turn around. (Think about Jonah, the Prodigal Son, etc.) This is Step Five in doing what you can to attract God s grace. Another thought: Fear not! If the goal you have is from God, fear not that it is hard, or that it will take years, or that you might not have the strength and resources to see it to completion. Our concern is much more to be faithful to the will of God than to have success. St. Basil the Great spent a great deal of his life combatting a heresy. It was only after he died that it was defeated. St. Basil accomplished a lot in 49 years, truly he did! But people could say he failed in his battle. Still, his failure to win the battle doesn t tarnish his memory. He s still the Great. St. Basil did not give up, he did not despair, he did not complain that God had let him down. He kept up the good fight, and was not afraid to keep doing right in the face of ridicule. This is Step Six. I do hope you will work on determining God s will for your life. Too many people settle for something that s good instead of striving for the best. What is the best? Pursuing God s will for our lives. Do not wait to work on this. The time is now. In my 46 years, I ve seen far too many people die or become incapacitated who still had goals they put off. Now they can never start on those goals, let alone finish. A final thought: Even lofty goals are not enough if they are not from God. Sometimes success is described as a ladder, and people spend decades climbing the ladder they supposed would bring them success. Many of those people do get to the top only to find the ladder is leaning on the wrong wall! They have reached the top of what? Do everything you can, every day, to make sure you are climbing the ladder up the right wall, the one God set you on this earth to climb. Then you will find fulfillment. Fr. Mark VACATION SEASON Tis the season of vacations! I bet we all are excited about our plans. Have you included the Church in your plans? These days it is easy to find a parish along the way, or at your destination(s) at least for any travel in the United States. Perhaps the most complete listing of Orthodox Parishes and monasteries available today is found at: http://assemblyofbishops.org/directories/ If you go to this website and click on the Parish Directory, a page will come up which will allow a search by city or zip code. Don t be afraid to expand your search beyond the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. All the parishes on this website are in communion with us. Sure, the music and the language may be different, but the Lord is one. It is polite to contact the priest to let him know you are coming. Even better, introduce yourself during Vespers the night before, or during Matins before Liturgy, so he doesn t have some stranger approach the chalice. It is the priest s duty to guard the chalice, meaning that he is supposed to administer Holy Communion only to the people who are chrismated into the Orthodox Christian Faith and are practicing it faithfully. So, when you are planning to visit, tell the priest who you are and where you regularly go to church. He will be happy to welcome you into his community. Happy travels! Fr. Mark

THE SOURCE JUNE/JULY 2014 Page 5 Dear Parishioners, PARISH COUNCIL Our Greek Festival was a success once again. Congratulations and thank you to all those that made it possible. We surpassed last year's sales. There are many high school students that are graduating and almost all are continuing their education by going to college. Some of them have qualified for a scholarship from our community. This year there are close to twenty scholarships being given by our church organizations. Congratulations to all the graduates and to all students who are receiving scholarships. Our church community is very fortunate to have a finalist in the 2014 National Oratorical Festival. As the winner of the senior division of the Metropolis of Pittsburgh's St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, Maria Chroneos will compete in the national event June 13-15 at Cleveland's Annunciation Church. Congratulations to Maria and her family. We wish her all the best as she participates in Cleveland! On July 6-10 the national Clergy-Laity Congress will take place in Philadelphia. Three individuals (Ed Ward, Helen Tzanis and John Harbilas) plus Fr Kosta will attend and bring back to our parishioners information on the discussions and decisions. As result of the successful and well-attended 75th anniversary dinner dance in November of 2012, a number of parishioners decided to hold a yearly dinner dance celebrating the Name Day of our church. This year it will be held June 8, 2014 at the Hilton Harrisburg. Please plan to attend. Call Helen Tzanis, Maria Peslis or Penny Matangos for tickets. Hope to see you there. We thank All the Women who came every Tuesday and helped us prepare each pastry. What a blessing it is to have 30-40 women work pleasantly together. The fellowship shared was very special to those of us that attended; young and old we all became better acquainted with each other. We even had some men who helped to make our baking a success. Special thanks to the people in charge of preparing the batches for the ladies. First, to our chairman, Chrisitina Stamos, and Vasiliki Kalathas who under their direction, Betsie Boutselis, Olympia Giannakopoulos Peggy Orosz, Koula Kokos, Sophia Kaldes, Toula Kontos, who did the preparation of the batches so that they would be ready for the women to work, the oven and the syrups, and were there Mondays to prepare for the women and stayed to after the women were gone Tuesdays to finish baking and storing/freezing what was done. In case, you are not aware how much is done, we need to also thank the crew that prepared for the baklava batches. They chopped the nuts and prepared the batches enough to make 13,900+ pieces of baklava. Under Thana Ward s direction, Betsie Boutselis, Doug and Ginny Schmitt, Jill Costopoulos, Linda Mallios, and Ettie Papoutsis. In addition, Thana Ward also worked with Sam and Janet Kolokithas, the Olympic Flame parents, Sunday School Parents, and GOYA parents to prepare the baklava pans needed for the Baklava Sunday Stand. We thank, Mrs. Evangelia Spanos for wrapping thousands of plastic silverware in napkins. We thank Anna Thompson for taking charge of the Yiayia s Attic with the capable help from Maria Peslis, Presv. Suzanne Lichtenstein, and Yvonne Gekas. JOACHIM AND ANNA SOCIETY The Saints Joachim and Anna Society met at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 8, in the Social Hall, with about 40 people in attendance. Following a business meeting, a luncheon was hosted by Amelia and William Avdellas and Eleanor and Peter Capataides, In place of a regular meeting in June, the Society will join the Philoptochos Society in holding a picnic in the Social Hall on Tuesday, June 3, at 5:30 pm. Membership in the Saints Joachim and Anna Society is open to all parishioners age 55 and over. TRANSPORTATION TO CHURCH WANTED An elderly (but active) senior citizen women, a Greek Orthodox Christian) from New York recently moved here in order to accept a more affordable apartment setting. She lives on Front Street, and would appreciate it if someone could assist her with transportation. Also, Kosta Kritikos is also looking for a way to church on Sundays. Lighting of Candles It is a pious Orthodox tradition to light candles for personal petitions and intercession when entering the church. Most parishes have designated candle stands or holders for these candles. It is not proper to light candles at certain times during the service generally the same times when you should not enter the church, such as during the Little and Great Entrances, when the priest is censing the icons and congregation or giving the homily, or during the reading of the Epistle or Gospel. The candles should be allowed to burn all the way down without being extinguished early, since the burning candle symbolized our prayers rising to heaving and the light of Christ in our midst. Please do not allow young children to light candles alone, for safety reasons. It is customary to make a donation for each candle.
THE SOURCE JUNE/JULY 2014 Page 9 SATURDAY OF SOULS The Orthodox Church has designated certain days of the year for special prayer services for the dead: The Saturday before Meat Fare Week and Cheese Fare Week and the Saturday before the first Sunday in Lent, February 22, March 1, and March 8. The Saturday prior to Pentecost, June 7, is also a Saturday of Souls. On these days, the Church remembers all the saints and our deceased loved ones. Our Church prays for all the dead to express their faith that all who have fallen asleep in the Lord live in the Lord. Whether on earth or in heaven, the Church is a single family, one body in Christ. Death changes the location, but it cannot sever the bond of love. On Memorial Saturdays, the liturgical hymns pray universally for all of the departed. "With the saints, give rest Oh Lord to the souls of your servants, where there is no pain or suffering, but life everlasting." May their memory be eternal! Farley The Gospel of Luke Good News for the Poor $24 The Gospel of St. Luke has been described as the loveliest book in the world. It was written by a Gentile for Gentiles, with the purpose of touching their hearts with the Good News of Christ. Luke speaks especially to the poor and the marginalized of society including women with an emphasis on Joy, healing, and prayer. With his gift of making the fruits of biblical scholarship accessible to the ordinary layperson, Fr. Lawrence Farley expounds this beautiful account of the life and ministry of Christ for contemporary Christians. The Epistle to the Romans A Gospel for All $15 The apostle Paul lived within a swirl of controversy. False Christians Judaizers dogged his every step, slandering his motives, denying his apostolic authority, and seeking to overthrow his Gospel teaching. They argued their case loudly, and Paul knew that he must give the literary performance of his life. The result was the Epistle to the Romans, in which he demonstrates the truth of his Gospel a Gospel for all men and thereby vindicates his apostolic authority.
THE SOURCE JUNE/JULY 2014 Page 11 First and Second Corinthians Straight from the Heart $16 The community Paul founded in Corinth gave him both joy and grief, for he was to encounter problems there of disunity, sin, and arrogance including a rejection by some of his own apostolic authority. His two epistles to the Corinthians came straight from the heart, as he appeals to them to live in peace, in righteousness, in generosity, and not to resist his God-given authority. His Corinthian correspondence abides as a lasting legacy, and a challenge for all churches everywhere. The Prison Epistles Philippians Ephesians Colossians Philemon $16 From the depths of a Roman prison, words of encouragement and instruction flowed from the tongue of the great Apostle Paul. Written down by scribes, his words went forth as a series of letters to Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire. The Apostle Paul may have been fettered and shackled to a series of Roman guards, but the Word he preached remained unfettered and free. Sheparding the Flock The Pastoral Epistles of St. Paul the Apostle to Timothy and Titus $13 What is the abiding significance of the epistles of the Apostle Paul to Timothy and Titus? In them, Paul teaches about how one ought to conduct oneself in the House of God, the Church (1 Tim. 3:15). As a loving shepherd, charged by Christ to care for the souls of men committed to him, St. Paul takes care to instruct others to shepherd the flock as well, and the wisdom born from such pastoral and loving care makes these epistles timeless and precious. These final three epistles of St. Paul remain as a testimony to his pastoral love and as an inspiration for those in the Church both the shepherds and the flock to walk in holiness and love themselves. Universal Truth The Catholic Epistles of James, Peter, Jude, and John $16 The catholic, or general, epistles of the other apostles James, Peter, Jude, and John are sometimes overshadowed by the stirring theology of the great Apostle to the Gentiles, St. Paul. But these seven epistles are quiet gems of instruction, encouragements, and exhortation for all believers.
