We journeyed from the first moment in time through the creation of the universe, the rise and fall of humanity, the promise of a Savior, the tower of Babel, the Great Flood, the emergence of faith and the trials of the righteous. Genesis concludes with the death of Jacob and the momentous funeral procession of his body to the land of Canaan. At the age of 147, the Patriarch Jacob foresees his death and makes his son Joseph swear that he will bury his body in the tomb of his forefathers Abraham and Isaac. Joseph honored his oath, and even though this honor belonged only to the kings of Egypt, he embalmed his father s body and accompanied it back to Canaan with a multitude, with pomp and circumstance that has never been seen before. So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, as well as all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen. And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and it was a very great gathering. Then they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they mourned there with a great and very solemn lamentation. He observed seven days of mourning for his father. (Genesis 50:7-10) Naturally, one would ask why Jacob demanded this honor for his body. Why did he insist on being buried in the tomb of his ancestors when it would involve GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE SUNDAY, APRIL 17, 2016

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. such expense and effort? The answer to this question can be found in the prevalence of the Promised Land as a theme in the book of Genesis, as in throughout the Old Testament. After man s exile from the Garden of Eden, the relationship of God to man begins with God commanding Abraham to leave his country on the promise of a new place, a Promised Land. Once he arrived to Canaan, Abraham was promised that the land would constitute his inheritance for generations to come. By the end of his life, Abraham had been given nothing. In fact, he had to purchase a plot of land in order to bury his wife Sarah. Abraham was wealthy but owned nothing. Isaac too would be a prosperous wonderer. Jacob would buy some land when he returned from Mesopotamia, but the only land these patriarchs called home would be their own grave, and no land was given to them by God. It would be four centuries later that their descendants would receive this Promised Land, having first been liberated from Egypt. They would occupy that land only after receiving God s Commandments, and being tested through the desert in recognizing God s dispensation and grace upon them. In Jacob s eyes, his fervent desire for his body to be returned to Canaan is nothing short of the image of the general resurrection and our desire to go home, the Kingdom of Heaven. Canaan would be given by God to his descendants as promised. It was given to them only once they had proven their willingness to accept God s will and covenant. In that condition, we realize that the Promised Land of the Old Testament has always been the image of our future inheritance, the Kingdom of Heaven. The burial of Jacob s body in Canaan is the image of the arrival of our body in God s Kingdom. The Second Coming is the time when our bodies will be resurrected. In Revelation 20:13 we read, The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. At the end of time, there shall be a great procession. All the dead will rise and we will present themselves at the Judgment Seat of Christ. We will arrive to this moment with our bodies, and the acts of both body and soul will be judged by our Righteous and Merciful Lord. The definition of salvation is the reunion of our body and soul onto a resurrection of life. For this reason, what we do with our body is important. This is why it is important that we place both soul and body within the grace-filled presence of Christ as it is found in church and in our prayer corner at home. This is why as an Orthodox Church we emphasize the physical aspect of extended worship, prostrations, fasting, and moral discipline. For this reason we dedicate our entire existence, body and soul, in a continuing act of returning all creation to our Creator. Jacob s desire to return his body to Canaan was not born out of some ethnocentric motivation. His desire is indicative of the longing everyone of us has experienced since we lost our home in the Garden of Eden. This life, this place, this earthly existence is not our home. We are foreigners here. This life is filled with sorrow, and every joy is accompanied by grief. Every man who is aware of the existence of his soul is also aware that he will never be comfortable on this earth because his home is elsewhere. The words in St. Paul s epistle to the Hebrews, when speaking of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, are very helpful in this case: These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, [c] embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they 2 The Voice

had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. (Hebrews 11:13-16) We strive to make this world a better place, but ultimately this world will devolve and end, not by the initiative of man, but by the intervention of God. As we prepare for the Lord s Resurrection, we come to realize that the path to the Kingdom has been opened. God will keep His promise of a land that knows no pain, sorrow or lament. According to His promise, He will come again and bring home those who have loved Him. He will save us; He will make us whole again; He will bring us to eternal communion with Him who became man so we can live with him forever. Therefore, our Orthodox faith involves our entire self, both body and soul. We cannot describe our faith only as an exercise in spirituality. Fasting matters. Being in church matters. Our ethical and moral life matters. Our words of repentance under the epitrachelion matter. Our receiving of the Body and Blood of Christ matters. Our Orthodox faith involves our soul, our spirit, our mind, our senses, our body, and everything in creation which will be renewed by the Lord s Resurrection, His Ascension, and His coming again in glory. Amen. In His love, Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos STEWARDSHIP 2016 The Stewardship Committee thanks our 165 Stewards who have fulfilled their pledge for the 2016 year. We wish to express our gratitude for your commitment to the Lord s work through our Church of Saint Spyridon. P.T.A. NEWS March was a very busy month for Greek School and PTA. The whole month s events were dedicated to our Greek culture and the preservation or our religion and Greek traditions. We are so grateful to our Greek School parents for lending a helping hand. We started off the month with our annual Greeks Got Talent, Talent show. It was a great success. Our Greek school students not only love coming to Greek School, but are also talented. Thank you to Maria Baltsas once again for organizing this evening of fun, food, and talented Greeks! On March 25 th, in honor of our Greek Independence Day, our PTA hosted a movie night out to watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. It was such a fun night out filled with laughter and fellowship. It was a sold out show! Proceeds from this event will be directly used for the community hall and items Greek School teachers need for their classrooms. We thank our family and friends who bought tickets and joined us. On Sunday, March 27 th our Greek School and PTA hosted its Independence Day Lenten Luncheon and Program. Our kids did a fantastic job reciting poems, singing patriotic songs, and performing traditional Greek dances from various parts of Greece. As a parent, watching my children on stage and Greek dancing, makes me so proud of our Greek School and our community. The tireless efforts of Father Tilemahos, Presvytera Georgia, our teachers, parents, and grandparents are what keep our Greek culture alive and thriving. We would like to especially thank Xando café for catering the food for this event, Greek Islands, 95 th Produce, The Papadatos, Baltsas and Grimanis Families, for their donations. To my PTA board, words cannot express how wonderful you all are. There is always a lot to be done for these events and together we accomplish great things. We would also thank the parents who helped serve and cleanup. There are many more things to come from now until the end of the School year. Registration and practices for Junior Olympics is well underway. If your child would like to participate in the Junior Olympics this year, please complete and return your registration form with the fee to your child s classroom teacher, the office, or a PTA member. Keep in mind that in order for your child to participate this year, one of the requirements is for him/her to complete his/ her Oratorical project. Please see your child s Sunday School teacher to make sure this requirement has been met. PTA is planning a Jr. Olympics barbeque on May 6 th to kick off our events. Please plan on staying after Greek School for food and fun. Weather permitting, we will be outside! PTA started selling Easter Candles for $20. We will be selling them every Sunday until Easter. Thank you to our talented and crafty moms made such beautiful candles. Coming up April 11 &15 School Spring pictures. Flyer was sent home already. Please send child both Monday and Friday with blue and white uniform. April 22- Last day of Greek School for Pasha Vacation April 23- Saturday of Lazarus, Divine Liturgy, followed by a Pancake Breakfast and making of the Palms Demetra Mikroulis, P.T.A. President The month of March has been filled with exciting events for Sunday School. Many of you may have noticed the Oratorical Festival projects that are on display in the gym. We are excited to have so many of our students participate. Many thanks to the parents and teachers who helped get these projects completed as well as Dana Vasilakos who organized everything for our parish. On March 20 th we had our Procession of Icons to celebrate the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Most of our students brought their icons from home and walked proudly with them around our church. Their participation in these events helps them understand the importance of the Lenten season and connects them to the teachings of our Church. Many thanks to Sam Bisbikis for taking pictures of the procession as well as classroom pictures. Looking forward to April, please note there is class every Sunday. All students are invited to the Saturday of Lazarus breakfast and Palm making as we prepare for Palm Sunday. Zoe Kopanis, Sunday School Director 6 The Voice SUNDAY SCHOOL

An overwhelming number of children participated in the litany of icons on Sunday of Orthodoxy. It was so much fun!!! Also, with the guidance of kyria Katerina the students made mini replicas of themselves dressed in Tsolia or Amaria, to celebrate Greek Independence Day, March 25th. Our school will be closing April 25th through May 2nd for Pascha break. We would like to wish everyone a blessed Holy Week and a Glorious Pascha! CHERUBS In March our little ones welcomed spring with flowers! We made lambs and lions for our classroom window and had great fun playing with play dough and playing together. The best part of the month though was making our Greek flags and waving them with pride! St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 15
