EPISTLE Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:1-6 B rethren, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 T he Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.
Resurrectional Apolytikion Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. For the Feast Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion O Champion General, I your City now ascribe to you triumphant anthems as the tokens of my gratitude, being rescued from the terrors, O Theotokos. Inasmuch as you have power unassailable, from all kinds of perils free me so that unto you I may cry aloud: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.
SUNDAY OF THE HOLY CROSS Not only does the Sunday of the Holy Cross prepare us for commemoration of the Crucifixion, but it also reminds us that the whole of Lent is a period when we are crucified with Christ. As we have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24), and will have mortified ourselves during these 40 days of the Fast, the precious and lifegiving Cross is now placed before us to refresh our souls and encourage us. The Cross reminds us of the Passion of our Lord and encourages us to follow Him in struggle and sacrifice, being refreshed, assured, and comforted. In other words, we must experience what the Lord experienced during His Passion - being humiliated in a shameful manner. The Cross teaches us that through pain and suffering we shall see the fulfillment of our hopes: the heavenly inheritance and eternal glory. THEODORA THE RIGHTEOUS Theodora s father was a commander of Thessaly and Macedonia, while her mother came from an aristocratic family in Constantinople. Soon after her father s death, she was taken under protection by Saints and Feasts the ruler of Epirus, Theodoros Aggelos Komninos and for six years she remained under his custody. Soon after his defeat by the Bulgarians, Theodoros gave away his throne to his nephew Michael II. Michael II met young Theodora and was impressed by her so much that he asked her to marry him. As soon as they got married, Theodora moved to Arta where she became queen. The couple was not at all compatible. She was very religious, while he enjoyed carnal relationships. Unable to follow him in his social life, Theodora was forced to withdraw and the gap between them grew bigger. He fell in love with a local woman belonging to the high society of Arta, whom he brought to the Royal Court and soon next to him on the throne of Epirus; together they had two sons. It was at this point that Queen Theodora decided to abandon the palace, wandering the Mountains of Tzoumerka. Although she was suffering, Theodora never lost her faith in God. After five troubled years, a priest from Prenista took her in and offered her shelter. She was eventually discovered and the people of Arta, who adored her for her modesty and religiousness, outraged by the life of Michael II, demanded her return to the palace as the lawful Queen. Michael was confronted with this public demand and was forced to denounce his mistress and take her back. The queen continued her philanthropies and had four more children with her husband, whom she followed everywhere. In a gesture of sincere regret for his behavior towards his wife, Michael built many glorious byzantine monuments in Arta. He founded the monastery of Kato Panagia, the Monastery of Panagia Vlahernon, and the monastery of Aghios Georgios, where she retreated after Michael s death in 1270. In this very monastery she spent the last 10 years of her life until her death in 1280 or 1281.

THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him.
