STUFFED ANIMALS PROJECT: We have a new collection for the month of September. In memory of 6-year old Ileana, the niece of our board member Allison Stavaridis, we will be collecting new stuffed animals. Ileana died of brain cancer back in April. Allison will be taking all of the new stuffed animals to children undergoing cancer treatments at the UCLA Mattel Pediatric Hospital. If you would like to donate a new stuffed animal, please bring it to church on a Sunday in the month of September OR bring it to our meeting on September 22. The animals will be given to children in October on Ileana s birthday. Philoptohos must continue to reach out and do the work of our Lord. The poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, those who may need assistance. That is what Philoptohos is here for. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me. John 12:8. With love in Christ s service, Virginia Noyes and The Philoptohos Board of Directors 6

HYMNS OF THE DAY RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION SECOND TONE When you descended into death, O life immortal, you destroyed Hades with the splendor of your divinity, and when you raised the dead from the depths of darkness, all the heavenly powers shouted: O giver of life, Christ our God, glory to you. APOLYTIKION FOR THE NATIVITY ΟF THE THEOTOKOS Your Nativity, O Theotokos, has proclaimed joy to the whole world; for from you has dawned the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, annulling the curse and bestowing the blessing, abolishing death and granting us life everlasting TROPARION OF SAINT SOPHIA (HOLY WISDOM) Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them the universe You drew unto Your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You. KONTAKION JOACHIM AND ANNA In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life." 8

EPISTLE READING EPISTLE READER...DINAH WELLINGTON Priest: Let Us Attend Reader: O Lord, save Your people and bless your inheritance To You, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. Priest: Wisdom... Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians (6:11-18) BRETHREN, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and not only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. 10
GOSPEL READING The Reading is from The Gospel of St. John (3:13-17) The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him." 11
