The site known as Block 15 was the name of a building in the largest Nazi concentration camp in Greece, located in martyr Haidari municipality during World War II. The Block was in the so-called πειθαρχείο and was intended solely to keep in strict isolation and punish thousands of prisoners through torture before execution. Living conditions were brutal in cells and the atrocities at the camp inspired in the following decades many local survivors to write memoirs of their experiences. Now the camp is a primary symbol of the hope for the prevalence of democracy, peace, liberty and respect of human values. We wish soon the Block 15 would become an open museum and name as a European heritage and remembrance Site of justice and humanity with its memorial to the all-european victims of Nazism perpetrators. The project HOPE II: The Story of Europe Remembrance and the Circle of European Friends who Resisted Hitler, frugal, accurate and to the point, reveals its aim from the first event: to illuminate the important European past, even its historical dark sides, thus contributing to the formation of a better view on the management of our future in the present. «Σήμερα, περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη φορά οφείλουμε να θυμόμαστε» Today, more than ever we must remember The mayor Dimitris Maravelias
Considering the European citizenship as an important element in strengthening and safeguarding the process of European integration, the European Commission encourages the engagement of European citizens in all aspects of their community life, thus enabling them to participate in the construction of an ever closer Europe. The Europe for Citizens Programme is the legal framework as well as the funding instrument to support a wide range of activities and organisations promoting the mentioned above active European citizenship and therefore the involvement of citizens and civil society organizations in the process of European integration. The Programme is implemented through four (4) Actions and through the 4 th one, about the Active European Remembrance, a specific objective is going to be pursued on a transnational basis: bringing Europe closer to its citizens by promoting Europe s values and achievements, while preserving the memory of its past. So, under the programme, priority is given to certain themes of particular relevance for the fully appreciation the meaning of fundamental values such as freedom, democracy and respect for human rights. By remembering the breaches of those principles caused by Nazism, by commemorating the victims of Nazism, by preserving the former concentration camps and other large scale martyrdom and extermination sites, memorials and archives associated with deportations and Holocausts, Europeans will keep alive the memory of the past including, Its dark sides, now, as witnesses are progressively disappearing. With the support of the Europe for citizens programme of the European Union
