ev Research Overview Theoretical and Empirical Directions EVOLUTION OBSERVATORY is an open space, an epistemic community of practice - cop - a self-sustained research team. Established in Athens, Greece in 2005, this cop operates as a joint research effort, formed by members from various disciples of science and engineering and from a variety of different universities and epistemological traditions. The team currently studies evolutionary theories, systems theory, complexity theory and networks. We perform research using mainly, but not limited to, qualitative research methodologies. Emphasis is given on case studies research, anthropological, ethnographic, phenomenological, hermeneutics, semiotic and Foucaudian analysis. In addition to Evolution Observatory there is also the EVOLUTION ATELIER. This is formed by members from various disciples of art and architecture and a variety of different approaches. S.EV 2005-2008 Sectors Evolution Project: This is a community of practice - cop - and the core of the evolution observatory research group. It is administrated by As. Prof. Yiannis Spanos. This cop operates as a joint research effort, formed by members from the Innovation and Knowledge Management Center at the Management Science Laboratory and from the Laboratory of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, both at the Department of Management of Science and Technology in the Athens University of Economics and Business. The team currently works on studying the evolution of four sectors of the Hellenic production system by implementing longitudinal field research. Currently, the group focuses on the Hellenic computer services sector which for two successive yeas has been observed to be the most innovative sector in Europe. Image The transformation of the corporate image in the Hellenic Banking Sector: A self sustained and financed joint research effort, formed by Ioannis Katsikis and Alexandros Papalexandris from the Innovation and Knowledge Management Center at the Management Science Laboratory and Eva Goutzamani from the Laboratory of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, of the Department of Management of Science and Technology in the Athens University of Economics and Business. The team currently works on studying the evolution of image of the Hellenic Banking sector by implementing semiotic analysis and retrospective research. Tele- Entre 2007-2008 Today, several concepts of teleological forms of entrepreneurship have been developed, beyond the traditional, neoclassical or Schumpeterian notion of business/economic entrepreneurship. Such conceptualizations refer to strategic entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, sustainable entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship and public entrepreneurship. Each of these notions refers to a specific objective as defined by its distinctive determining character (strategic, environmental, sustainable, etc). In this paper, we aim at mapping teleological approaches to the entrepreneurial phenomenon by providing a critical review of the literature on entrepreneurship and its notions, which are presented and briefly analyzed. This serves as a tool for unveiling the core of entrepreneurship in order to guide future research pertaining to the different forms of entrepreneurship, aiming at addressing modern business issues. Indu-Her 2007-2008 This research develops a sceptical approach on the process of re-essence giving for the use of industrial spaces within the urban landscape. Industrial complexes, districts, buildings and other spaces developed during the past on the edge of the city and the industry gave meaning to both areas and uses. Today, they rest as elements of memory and embodied (?) parts of the modern urban cultural landscape. Following de-industrialisation and the exodus of bothering activities out of the urban complex, these areas receive new uses and meanings. At the same time they often became objects of dispute considering they functional relocation within the contemporary urban complex. In-between private industrial ownership and public cultural heritage these spaces obtain new uses, forms and functions. In the theoretical part of this essay, we discuss the issue of industrial ownership transition from the private sphere to the public domain based on the cultural heritage literature. In the empirical part, we map the new uses of those spaces in the context of four large cities of Greece (Thessaloniki, Volos, Athens and Irakleio) with a significant industrial tradition. The objective of this research, undertaken by Mr Ioannis Katsikis of AUEB and Mr Konstantinos Tsagkarakis of the Dept. of Geography at the Harokopeion University, is to retrospectively study the perpetual evolution in the use of those spaces and thus underline their contribution in the formation of a new urban geography. EVRegion 2006-2009 The SustEnt Project is a research initiative undertaken by Mr Hadi Tolga Göksidan, from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey and Mr Ioannis Katsikis from the Athens University of Economics and Business, Athens, Greece. This joint research effort aims at studying the regional and evolutionary dimension of innovation and technological development and its interaction with space. It will provide a review of the literature on related research streams, a conceptual framework and new methodological approaches and the relevant supporting empirical evidence for the development of clusters in space for Turkey, Greece and other European Countries. The first results of this work have already appeared.
