FROM FATHER ANTHONY Beloved in Christ, The joyous celebration of the Nativity of Christ is fast approaching, to be followed by the glorious feast of Holy Theophany 12 days later. Many of us do not realize that centuries ago these two feasts were celebrated on the same day, January 6 th. I would like to explain this in greater detail, so that we can all know something of the history behind the separation of the two feasts. First of all, we must remember that Christianity was born into a pagan world. Even the first Christians in the Holy Land could not escape this reality since they were occupied by the Romans. Pagan religious and secular observances continued to exist for the next few centuries alongside Christianity, which was persecuted throughout this period. This reality had a direct effect on the separation of the feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Christ. Regarding these two events, the early Church merged them into one feast that celebrated the various manifestations of Christ to the world: His birth in the flesh as the God-man; His revelation as God through the visitation of the Magi, who worshipped Him and offered Him gifts accordingly; and finally, His manifestation to the world as the Son of God along with the Father and Holy Spirit during Theophany, thus manifesting the Holy Trinity to the world. As mentioned above, January 6 th was the day assigned to this great feast of the Lord. During Roman pagan times, December 25 th was the celebration of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year after which hours of sunlight would begin increasing. The focus of the feast was worship of the sun god, Sol Invictus (the Unconquerable Sun). This pagan holiday was notorious for debauchery and wild celebration, not unlike the way some people today celebrate New Year s Eve. Unfortunately, the influence of pagan society continually affected many Christians of the time. They would get caught up in the revelry of the holiday which was truly unfitting for Christians, especially in light of their spiritual preparation for the upcoming feast of the Lord s birth and epiphany 12 days later. In the 4 th century through an act of great wisdom, the Church separated the celebration of the Nativity of Christ and the visit of the Magi from the celebration of His baptism and epiphany to the world, creating a new feast to focus on His birth and related events. This new feast of the Nativity of Christ was superimposed onto the pagan feast of the sun on December 25 th. This clever maneuver created a correct focus on worshipping Christ the Sun of Righteousness, the true Light of the world, instead of the pagan god of the sun. The apolytikion, or central hymn of the Nativity, clearly reveals the correct focus for the newly formed feast of December 25 th : Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, has shone upon the world with the light of knowledge; for thereby they who adored the stars through a star were taught to worship Thee, the sun of righteousness, and to know Thee, the Dayspring from on high. O Lord, glory to Thee. Eventually, a 40-day fast period became the norm in the preparation for the feast of the Nativity of Christ. Also as with Bright Week which follows Holy Pascha, the Church eliminated all fasting starting from the feast of the Nativity up to January 4 th, the day before the Eve of Theophany. In fact, the celebration of the Nativity is linked to the feast of Theophany by the 12-day festal period which ends on Theophany Eve, January 5 th. On this day, a strict fast is upheld in order to prepare the faithful for the feast, and for the drinking of Holy Water which is blessed at the liturgy of the eve. This linking of the Nativity and Theophany is only logical, being that these two events were once united as one major feast. For many centuries, Orthodox Christians have been celebrating the Nativity of our Lord on December 25 th, which includes the commemoration of the visit of the Magi. On the eighth day after the Lord s birth, January 1 st, His circumcision and naming are celebrated, along with the memory of St. Basil the Great which was added after his canonization. Then on January 6 th the Church advances to the Lord s baptism in the Jordan and manifestation as God in the flesh, along with the Father and Holy Spirit. It should be noted that in keeping with historical accuracy, on the 40 th day after the Lord s birth, February 2 nd, the feast of the Meeting (or Presentation) of Christ in the temple is celebrated. With this feast we close the entire Nativity related period, and in most years the beginning of the Triodion promptly follows. I hope that I have enlightened you with this interesting history of the feasts of the Nativity and Theophany of Christ. In addition, hopefully you can appreciate even more, why the Orthodox Church holds that the true and correct celebration of the Lord s Nativity begins on December 25 th and culminates on the feast of Theophany, January 6 th, the climax of this holy season. FROM FATHER ANTHONY SPIRITUAL WISDOM God allows temptations so that they might rouse us to remember Him. When we call upon Him, He acts as though He does not hear us so that we multiply our supplications and cry out His holy name, in fear of the various passions. Then, through the pain of the entreaties, our heart is sanctified, and through experience we learn the weakness of our lame nature. And thus we realize in practice that without God s help we are not able to do anything. (Elder Ephraim of the Holy Mountain) Holy Scripture is the greatest gift which God has given to man the word of God is like an instrument which punctures the hardness of our heart. It is like a charge of dynamite which blasts our passions the words and lines of Holy Scripture are the garments of Christ We know the names of dozens of actors and celebrities by heart, backwards and forwards. The same thing with sports stars Here s a better idea, let s do something else. When you go home tonight, open up the Scriptures. (+Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetra, Mt. Athos) Of course, there will be trying periods in our life when the path of ascension toward God will seem exceptionally difficult. Then we should think that for every step taken there are a thousand rewards being prepared. Sufferings along this path are momentary, but the rewards are eternal. (St. Innocent of Alaska) A man may seem to be silent, but if his heart is condemning others, he is babbling ceaselessly. But there may be another who talks from morning till night and yet he is truly silent, that is, he says nothing that is not profitable. (St. Poemen the Great) If we dwell upon the harms that have been wrought on us by men, we amputate from our mind the power of dwelling upon God. (St. Macarius the Great) The demons try to undermine your inward resolution by buffeting your souls with an untold variety of temptations. Yet out of these many tribulations a garland is woven for you; Christ s power comes to its fullness in us in our weakness (2 Cor. 12:9). It is usually when our situation is most gloomy that the grace of the Spirit flowers within us. (St. John of Karpathos) IN APPRECIATION As we approach the end of our centennial year, it is time to formally express our gratitude to the 100 Year Anniversary Committee, and to all parishioners who contributed to the various aspects of the year-long celebration. First and foremost we thank George Alexis, the general chairman of the 100 Year Committee. His guidance and hard work kept the events of the year well-organized and executed. Alongside George, Parish Council President Nick Babanikas offered his constant support and hard work along with the entire parish council. Our Philoptochos Society also offered its support and contributions during the year. We also express gratitude to all those involved with the Tree of Life project, the commemorative DVD that was produced, as well as the gala banquet in November. Many laborious hours were spent by the members of these three committees, which produced wonderful results. All these individuals were named and acknowledged in the banquet program booklet. And of course, let us thank all of you who contributed to the Tree of Life, offered recorded interviews for the DVD, and attended the gala banquet. May we all enter the next century of our existence united as one family in Christ! NATIVITY FAST CONTINUES Even if we have not kept the fast up to this point, it s not too late to begin. We should especially make an effort to uphold the fast to whatever extent possible, starting on 12/13 through the Eve of the Nativity on 12/24. For those keeping the fast, the Christmas season can be challenging due to Christmas parties at work, or at the homes of friends and relatives. In these situations we bring to mind the guidance of the Church Fathers: partake in a limited fashion of that which is offered you, and do not bring attention to your fasting. With this approach we don t lose the spirit of the fast, and more importantly, we retain the virtue of humility which is paramount in the life of an Orthodox Christian. Following are the generally accepted guidelines as a starting point, which may be modified as needed. Up to 12/12: Fasting from all animal products. Fish, wine (all alcoholic beverages), and olive oil may be consumed every day except for Wednesdays and Fridays, with some exceptions. Shellfish may be consumed daily. From 12/13 12/24: Fasting from all animal products including fish, and from wine and olive oil, except Saturdays and Sundays when wine and oil are permitted. Shellfish may be consumed daily. Remember that fasting should be relaxed for health reasons, and for growing children. Your spiritual father is always available to guide you accordingly.

FROM FATHER ANTHONY REFLECTIONS ON THE NATIVITY & THEOPHANY (The following is taken from The Year of Grace of the Lord, by A Monk of the Eastern Church, SVS Press, 1992.) The celebration of the birth of Christ was introduced into the ecclesiastical calendar at a relatively late date. During the first centuries, the Church concentrated on Epiphany, the first and glorious manifestation of the Lord, rather than on his birth, an event which seemed somehow private and as if wrapped in shadow even though this shadow was shot through by rays of divine light We shall be careful, though, not to underestimate the inspiration by which the Holy Spirit has impelled the whole Christian community to contemplate Jesus s birth itself and honour it better. We shall strive to receive the message and the grace that Christmas brings with our whole heart. We shall consider the period which lasts from Christmas to Epiphany as an indivisible feast, of which Christmas is the starting point and Epiphany the culmination. The prolongation of this celebration offers increased possibilities for our conversion to him who comes We shall quote some of the words sung at matins for Christmas, to show what spirit animates the Church at this feast: All things are filled with joy today Let all the earth acclaim its God. Rod of the root of Jesse, and flower that blossomed from its stem, O Christ, Thou has sprung from the Virgin. To those who are caught in the night straying into the works of darkness grant, O Christ, thy blessing. I was pierced by the arrows of the tyrant, but found refuge in Thee, O Christ, who hast overcome the evil one. Having beheld those lightless figures and the shades that have turned away from the Word, now O most pure Mother, that He has issued from the door that was closed and that we are judged worthy of the light of truth, we bless thy womb Our Saviour, the Dayspring from on high, has visited us, and we who were in shadow and in darkness have found the truth We notice here, once again, the tendency of the Byzantine Church to think of Christ in terms of light. Byzantine Christians certainly do not forget that the Word became a small child who was laid in a manger; but while Western Christians seem, since the middle ages, to cling with pleasure to this flesh and blood child, the East sees above all in the Incarnation the coming of light, its triumph over darkness, and our own conversion from the night of sin to the divine radiance. The East wants to contemplate the eternal reality to which the historical event gives expression. This spiritualization of Christmas evidences a very different state of mind from that (which is no less legitimate) of most Western Christians Epiphany is the first public manifestation of Christ. At the time of His birth, our Lord was revealed to a few privileged people. Today, all those who surround John, that is to say his own disciples and the crowd that has come to the banks of the Jordon, witness a more solemn manifestation of Jesus Christ. What does the manifestation consist of? It is made up of two aspects. On the one hand, there is the aspect of humility represented by the baptism to which our Lord submits; on the other hand, there is the aspect of glory represented by the human witness that the Precursor bears to Jesus, and, on an infinitely higher plane, the divine witness which the Father and the Spirit bear to the Son Let us bear this in mind: every manifestation of Jesus Christ, both in history and in the inner life of each man, is simultaneously a manifestation of humility and of glory. Whoever tries to separate these two aspects of Christ commits an error which falsifies the whole of spiritual life The aspect of humility in Epiphany consists of the fact that Our Lord submits to John s baptism of repentance Obviously Jesus had no need to be purified by John, but this baptism conferred by the Precursor, this baptism for the remission of sins, was a preparation for the messianic kingdom; and Jesus, before proclaiming the coming of this kingdom, wished to go through all those preparatory phases which He himself was to consummate. Being Himself the fullness, He wished to take into Himself all that was still incomplete and unfinished He who was without sin made Himself the bearer of all our sins, of the sin of the whole world; and it is in the name of all sinners that Jesus made a public act of repentance As far as we ourselves are concerned, repentance is the aspect of humility in Epiphany. And here we must go beyond the limited horizon of the Johannine baptism and remind ourselves that we have been baptized in Christ. Christian baptism has washed and purified us Epiphany is, above all, the feast of baptism, not only of Jesus baptism, but also of our own. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to renew in spirit the baptism that we received, and to revive the grace which was conferred on us. For the sacramental graces, even if interrupted and suspended by sin, can become alive in us again, if we turn sincerely to God. At this feast of Epiphany, let us ask God to wash us again spiritually, not actually in the waters of baptism; let us drown the old, the sinful creature in them, for baptism is a mystical death; let us cross the Red Sea which separates captivity from freedom and let us immerse ourselves with Jesus in the Jordan to be washed not by the Precursor, but by Jesus Himself This feast brings us, not only the grace of purification, but also the grace of illumination (in fact, baptism itself was formerly called illumination ). The light of Christ at Christmas was but a star in the dark night; at Epiphany it appears to us as the rising sun; it will grow and, after the eclipse of Holy Friday, burst forth yet more splendid, on the morning of Easter; and finally, at Pentecost, it will reach its full zenith

100 YEAR BANQUET MESSAGE OF FR. ANTHONY Your Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, my brother in Christ Fr. John, honorable guests, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, Christ is in our midst! It is both an honor and a privilege to be standing here this evening addressing you at this centennial gala celebration. Just six short years ago I addressed all of you on the day of the consecration of our holy temple on October 10 th, 2010. At that time I had been with you just over two years. Now that I have completed eight years of service to our beloved parish, I am fortunate to be part of this major milestone as well. Honestly, I feel unworthy to be your spiritual father during this centennial year, knowing how many dedicated and worthy servants have shepherded this parish over the past 100 years. Nonetheless, the needs of the Church and our Metropolis have brought me here, so therefore, this honor falls to me. As we look back over the past 100 years, it is truly amazing to realize that this parish s history has spanned a century of major world events. The Annunciation was founded during the 1 st World War; it s second decade of existence was during the Roaring 20 s and Prohibition; the 30 s brought on the Great Depression; the early 40 s the dark years of the 2 nd World War, this being an extremely difficult time for our Greek immigrants who were cut off from communication with their loved ones in Greece during the Nazi occupation; the 50 s brought on the Korean War as well as the escalation of the Cold War; the 60 s, the Vietnam War as well as societal changes and upheavals such as the sexual revolution and the drug culture; and without elaborating any further, those of us old enough also recall the issues and challenges that we encountered during the 70 s, 80 s, 90 s, as well as those of the first two decades of the current millennium. Throughout these challenging periods of history, the faithful of this parish continued to uphold their Orthodox faith and maintain their Hellenic heritage and culture. As with all our older parishes throughout the Archdiocese, the Annunciation became a true community; a place where our forefathers and their children gathered to worship the living God; a place to foster the teaching of the mother tongue and the Orthodox faith; a place to continue and pass on centuries-old traditions of our heritage and faith. And all of this required a permanent space within which to accomplish these sacred duties. As we well know, our predecessors accomplished this twice once on Warren Avenue, and again on Oak Street. Just 30 short years ago our current holy temple and community center were constructed. Beautification, improvements, and necessary repairs have occurred over the past many years, and will continue into the future. The mortgage was eventually retired, and we were then blessed to have our church consecrated by the hands of His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios. However, we must remember that a parish is not simply bricks and mortar. Yes, holy temples and community centers are necessary, but the Church has always been the Mystical Body of Christ the souls of all Orthodox Christians who have been grafted onto this Mystical Body through baptism and chrismation. Over the years the Annunciation has been comprised of countless souls that have now passed on to eternal life. Presently it also consists of many souls some that we see often, others not so much. But in either case, all of us together comprise the Body of Christ on the local level. As with any parish community, things are not always peaceful; there will always be bumps in the road, especially when any major project is undertaken. To say that this was not the case here would be an untruth. Over the past 100 years, there certainly have been disagreements, heated debates, and other forms of conflict. Those things however, did not prevent the growth and development of our parish. And why, you may ask? Because the Holy Spirit continually guides this church as It does everywhere we find the Body of Christ. Those who remained right-minded and focused on the faith did not allow themselves to be derailed. Of course, our prayer as spiritual leaders is that we all continue to grow spiritually, and to accomplish things together as a united family in Christ. So now that buildings have been built, mortgages have been paid, solid ministries have been established, a robust liturgical life is being followed now is the time to turn the page and begin the next chapter in the life of the Annunciation. As we enter our second century of existence, let us not just celebrate the past 100 years that have brought us to where we are; let us also celebrate both the present and the future, by anticipation. Regarding the present, there is much to celebrate. Our liturgical services are enhanced through the efforts of our chanters, choir, and altar servers; philanthropy and in-house hospitality is offered through our Philoptochos Society; our children are educated in the Orthodox faith and Greek language through our religious and Greek language educational programs; our seniors are offered a monthly fellowship program; our youth enjoy all the age-appropriate programs and activities that we offer; adults are offered religious education one evening per week during the academic year; a variety of fellowship opportunities take place each year in the form of luncheons, musical events, dinners, and other types of celebrations; but most importantly, liturgical services are offered abundantly throughout the ecclesiastical year, most especially during Great Lent and Holy Week. This is our present reality in which we rejoice immensely. Regarding the future, our hope and prayer is to bring all the positive things of the past and present into the future. But this won t be enough. The future of this parish, of our Archdiocese, and of all Orthodox jurisdictions in America, necessitates the opening of our doors widely in order to welcome and embrace those souls beyond ethnic boundaries, into the sheepfold of the Church. If we are to be true to the missionary goals of the Orthodox Church, then we must now turn the corner and face this challenge on the local level. The walls and roofs that we ve built are not there to insulate us from the outside. Instead, they are there to embrace all who enter, offering solace and spiritual joy and comfort. So again, I encourage you tonight to truly rejoice in our wonderful 100-year history, to rejoice in what we currently have, and to rejoice from now in the potential future that can be our reality, as we all work toward those sacred goals. Ἡ πορεία αὕτη δὲν θὰ εἶχε τὸ ποθούμενον ἀποτέλεσμα, ἄνευ τῆς ἀγάπης καὶ τῆς συμπαραστάσεως τῶν Ἀδελφῶν Προκαθημένων τῶν λοιπῶν Ὀρθοδόξων Αὐτοκεφάλων Ἐκκλησιῶν. Ἡ φιλάδελφος αὕτη στήριξις τῶν Μακαριωτάτων Προκαθημένων, τοὺς ὁποίους καὶ εὐχαριστοῦμεν ἐγκαρδίως, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡ ἔκφρασις σεβασμοῦ ἐκ μέρους τοῦ Ἱεροῦ κλήρου, τῶν Ἀρχῶν καὶ τοῦ φιλογενοῦς λαοῦ, ἀπὸ τὸ νοτιώτερον ἄκρον τῆς Ἀφρικῆς ἕως τὴν Σιβηρίαν, καὶ ἀπὸ τὴν Ἄπω Ἀνατολὴν ἕως τὰ πέρατα τῆς Δύσεως, ὑπῆρξε συγκινητικὴ καὶ ἀμείωτος. Τοῦτο μαρτυροῦν, ἐπίσης, αἱ ἐπισκέψεις εἰς Φανάριον τῶν κληρικῶν καὶ λαϊκῶν τῶν ἄλλων Ὀρθοδόξων Ἐκκλησιῶν, γεγονὸς τὸ ὁποῖον τονίζει καὶ ἐνδυναμώνει τοὺς ἀρρήκτους πνευματικοὺς ἡμῶν δεσμοὺς καὶ τὴν ἀκλόνητον ἑνότητα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας. Ἐνθυμούμεθα μὲ συγκίνησιν τὴν ἀβραμιαίαν φιλοξενίαν, τῆς ὁποίας ἐτύχομεν ὑπὸ ἀδελφῶν Προκαθημένων καὶ Ἱεραρχῶν. Ἐνθυμούμεθα τὸν εὐσεβῆ λαόν, ὁ ὁποῖος ὑπεδέχθη ἡμᾶς μετὰ δακρύων συγκινήσεως καὶ ποικίλων ἐκδηλώσεων ἀνυποκρίτου ἀγάπης. Δὲν λησμονοῦμεν τοὺς εὐλαβεῖς μοναχοὺς καὶ μοναχάς, οἱ ὁποῖοι πολλάκις ἐφιλοξένησαν ἡμᾶς καὶ ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχονται διὰ τὴν ἡμετέραν Μετριότητα καὶ τὴν Ἐκκλησίαν τῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ πενήτων. Ἡ Ὀρθόδοξος ἡμῶν Ἐκκλησία εἶναι Μία, κεφαλὴν ἔχουσα τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν, τὸν ἀξιώσαντα ἡμᾶς νὰ συγκαλέσωμεν, συμφρονούντων καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν Μακαριωτάτων Προκαθημένων, τὴν προσφάτως πραγματοποιηθεῖσαν ἐν Κρήτῃ Ἁγίαν καὶ Μεγάλην Σύνοδον τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας. Τὸ μεῖζον τοῦτο ἱστορικὸν γεγονὸς τῆς Ἁγίας ἡμῶν Ἐκκλησίας πληροῖ ἡμᾶς χαρᾶς μεγίστης καὶ δυνάμεθα νὰ καυχηθῶμεν ἐν Κυρίῳ, ὅτι τοῦτο ἀποτελεῖ τὸ ἀποκορύφωμα τῆς ἡμετέρας Πατριαρχίας. Ἡ Ἁγία καὶ Μεγάλη Σύνοδος ἀνέδειξε τὴν συνοδικὴν ταυτότητα τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας καὶ εἶναι χρέος πάντων ἡμῶν, τόσον τῶν συμμετασχόντων, ὅσον καὶ τῶν κωλυθέντων ὅπως παραστοῦν, ἡ ἀποδοχὴ καὶ ἡ ἐφαρμογὴ τῶν Ἀποφάσεων τῆς Συνόδου, ὡς καὶ ἡ μεταλαμπάδευσις καὶ ἡ καλλιέργεια τοῦ πνεύματος ἑνότητος εἰς τὸ εὐσεβὲς Ὀρθόδοξον ποίμνιον ἁπανταχοῦ τῆς Οἰκουμένης. Ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι τὰς ἀπαιτήσεις τῶν καιρῶν, ἐσυνεχίσαμεν καὶ ἐνεθαρρύναμεν τὸν Θεολογικὸν Διάλογον μετὰ τοῦ λοιποῦ Χριστιανικοῦ κόσμου, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸν Ἀκαδημαϊκὸν διάλογον μετὰ τῶν ἄλλων Θρησκειῶν. Μνημονεύομεν εὐγνωμόνως καὶ ἀναγνωρίζομεν τοὺς κόπους καὶ τὴν μεγάλην προσφορὰν τῶν συμμετασχόντων καὶ συμμετεχόντων εἰς ὅλους αὐτοὺς τοὺς διαλόγους, ὅπου ἐδόθη καὶ δίδεται μετὰ παρρησίας ἡ ἀξιόπιστος μαρτυρία τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Πίστεως. Ἡ συνεχιζομένη μάστιξ τοῦ πολέμου καὶ τῆς τρομοκρατίας ἀνὰ τὴν ὑφήλιον δὲν ἔπαυσε νὰ ἀπασχολῇ τὴν ἡμετέραν Μετριότητα. Τὸ κῦμα βίας, τὸ ὁποῖον πλήττει πολλὰς περιοχὰς τοῦ κόσμου, ἔφερεν ὡς ἀποτέλεσμα τὴν ἐξουθένωσιν τῶν λαῶν καὶ τὸν διωγμὸν τῶν ἀδελφῶν Χριστιανῶν τῆς Μέσης Ἀνατολῆς. Προσευχόμεθα διὰ τοὺς μαρτυρήσαντας Χριστιανοὺς καὶ ἀπευθύνομεν ἔκκλησιν πρὸς κάθε ἐμπλεκόμενον διὰ τὴν παῦσιν τῶν ἐχθροπραξιῶν καὶ τῶν ἐγκληματικῶν ἐνεργειῶν. Ἡ Ἁγιωτάτη ἡμῶν Ἐκκλησία προσεύχεται ὑπὲρ τῆς εἰρήνης τοῦ σύμπαντος κόσμου καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν σεβασμὸν τῆς προσωπικότητος καὶ τῆς ἀτομικῆς ἐλευθερίας θεμελιῶδες καὶ ἀπαράγραπτον δικαίωμα τοῦ κάθε ἀνθρώπου. Δὲν ὑπάρχει «ἱερὸς» πόλεμος. Μόνον ἡ εἰρήνη εἶναι ἱερὰ καὶ κοινὸν ὑπέρτατον καθῆκον. Μὲ ἀγωνίαν καὶ βαθύτατον πόνον, παρακολουθοῦμεν τὸ δρᾶμα τῶν βιαίως ἐκδιωχθέντων ἀπὸ τὰς πατρογονικὰς αὐτῶν ἑστίας προσφύγων, οἱ ὁποῖοι ἐλπίζουν εἰς ἕνα καλύτερον κόσμον καὶ μίαν νέαν πατρίδα. Ἡ πρόσφατος ἐπίσκεψις ἡμῶν εἰς τὸ κέντρον ὑποδοχῆς προσφύγων εἰς Λέσβον, μετὰ τοῦ Ἁγιωτάτου Πάπα Φραγκίσκου καὶ τοῦ Μακαριωτάτου Ἀρχιεπισκόπου Ἀθηνῶν Ἱερωνύμου, ἀπετέλε-σε μίαν κοινὴν προσπάθειαν εὐαισθητοποιήσεως τῆς παγκοσμίου κοινῆς γνώμης διὰ τὸν πάσχοντα συνάνθρωπον. Ὁ κόσμος σήμερον διέρχεται μίαν μεγάλην οἰκονομικὴν καὶ κοινωνικὴν κρίσιν. Τὸ φαινόμενον τῆς παγκοσμιοποιήσεως προκαλεῖ ἰσχυροὺς κλυδωνισμοὺς εἰς τὴν παγκόσμιον οἰκονομίαν καὶ διαταράσσει τὴν κοινωνικὴν συνοχήν, διευρῦνον τὸ χάσμα μεταξὺ πτωχῶν καὶ πλουσίων. Ἡ ἀρχὴ τῆς ἰδιονομίας τῆς οἰκονομίας, ἡ ὁποία αὐτονομεῖ τὴν οἰκονομίαν ἀπὸ τὰς ἀνθρωπίνας ἀνάγκας, φέρει ὡς ἀποτέλεσμα τὴν κερδοσκοπίαν καὶ τὴν ἐκμετάλλευσιν. Ἡμεῖς ἀντιτιθέμεθα εἰς τὴν οἰκονομικὴν δραστηριότητα ὡς αὐτοσκοπὸν καὶ προτείνομεν μίαν «οἰκονομίαν μὲ ἀνθρώπινον πρόσωπον», διεπομένην ὑπὸ τῶν εὐαγγελικῶν ἀρχῶν τῆς δικαιοσύνης καὶ τῆς ἀλληλεγγύης. Ἀπὸ τῆς ἐνάρξεως τῆς Πατριαρχικῆς ἡμῶν διακονίας, ἠσχολήθημεν ἐνδελεχῶς μὲ τὴν προώθησιν τῆς προστασίας τοῦ φυσικοῦ περιβάλλοντος. Εἴμεθα οἰκονόμοι καὶ προστάται τῆς δημιουργίας τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἔχομεν ἱερὸν χρέος νὰ σεβώμεθα καὶ νὰ παραδίδωμεν τὸ θεόσδοτον αὐτὸ δῶρον ἀκέραιον καὶ ἀλώβητον εἰς τὰς ἐπερχόμενας γενεάς. Ἡ πνευματικὴ καὶ ἠθικὴ κρίσις τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, ἡ κατάχρησις τῆς ἐλευθερίας του, ὡδήγησαν εἰς τὴν ρῆξιν τῆς σχέσεως αὐτοῦ μὲ τὴν κτίσιν καὶ εἰς τὴν διαστρέβλωσιν τῆς ὀρθῆς χρήσεως αὐτῆς. Σήμερον, δὲν ἐκμεταλλευόμεθα μόνον τοὺς φυσικοὺς πόρους τοῦ πλανήτου μας, δὲν μολύνομεν μόνον τὸ φυσικὸν περιβάλλον, ἀλλὰ ἐπεξετείναμε τὴν μόλυνσιν καὶ εἰς τὸ διάστημα, ἐφόσον τὰ τελευταῖα ἔτη αὐξάνει ραγδαίως ὁ ὄγκος τῶν λεγομένων "διαστημικῶν σκουπιδιῶν" καὶ γίνεται λόγος ἀκόμη καὶ διὰ τὴν ἐκμετάλλευσιν πόρων ἄλλων οὐρανίων σωμάτων. Μόνη λύσις εἶναι ἡ ριζικὴ ἀλλαγὴ νοοτροπίας, ἡ μετάβασις ἀπὸ τὴν κτητικὴν καὶ καταναλωτικὴν στάσιν εἰς τὴν εὐχαριστιακὴν καὶ ἀσκητικὴν χρῆσιν τῆς δημιουργίας, καὶ ἡ ἐν τῷ πνεύματι αὐτῷ διαπαιδαγώγησις τῶν νέων, ὥστε νὰ ἀντιμετωπίζουν τὸ περιβάλλον μὲ εὐαισθησίαν, σεβασμὸν καὶ ὑπεθυνότητα. Ὑμνοῦμεν καὶ εὐχαριστοῦμεν, ἐν ταπεινώσει καὶ παρακλήσει, τὸν ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεόν, ἐπὶ τῇ συμπληρώσει εἰκοσιπενταετίας ὅλης εἰς τὸ Πηδάλιον τῆς Πρωτοθρόνου Ἐκκλησίας τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας, καὶ ἀπευθυνόμενοι πρὸς πάντας ὑμᾶς, τιμιώτατοι ἀδελφοὶ καὶ τέκνα ἐν Κυρίῳ ἀγαπητά, ἐξαιτούμεθα τὰς δεήσεις καὶ τὰς εὐχάς σας πρὸς «τὸν μέγαν Θεὸν καὶ Σωτῆρα ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν» (πρβλ. PARISH NEWS CHANGE TO ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SESSIONS Due to early nightfall and potential for bad weather in the winter months, starting in January we will begin offering adult religious education every other Wednesday morning starting at 10 am. For those who work during the day, we will continue offering an evening service and class on the alternate Wednesdays. For the morning sessions we will begin with an abbreviated Orthros that will last one-half hour, and then proceed to the conference room for a one-hour session. Please refer to the enclosed January calendar for the dates and times. CONFESSION SCHEDULE Our Holy Church has always instructed the faithful to participate in the sacrament of Holy Confession during all major fast periods of the year, and needless to say, on an as needed basis. During the Nativity Fast I am available to hear confessions per the usual schedule: Saturdays after Great Vespers, and during office hours by appointment. This would be a wonderful opportunity to sweep clean the manger within us, in order to allow the newborn Christ to enter therein! If you call outside of office hours, please listen to the menu and select #5 for the listing of church services for the current week. This message will always be updated regarding cancellations. PARISH NEWS PRESIDENT S CORNER Dear Parishioners, On behalf of Father Anthony, and the Parish Council, I would like to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year filled with health, happiness and every good thing. During these most blessed periods of the Nativity and the Theophany, let us remember as Orthodox Christians, the gift of salvation which our Heavenly Father has given to us through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Let us be grateful for all our blessings and be generous towards others. As you know, last month on November 5, 2016, our church celebrated its 100-Year Anniversary at the Shaw's Center. This milestone event was attended by more than 425 parishioners, friends and dignitaries who came together in Christian fellowship to pay tribute and give testimony to the forefathers and foremothers of our church. At the conclusion of this memorable evening, it was clear that a solid foundation of faith in God was built by those before us and that we have a vibrant and passionate Parish as we prepare to embark on the next 100 years and beyond. I suggest that it is our obligation and responsibility as parishioners to keep the teachings of our church front and center in our household lives. The church provides structure from which we can draw strength from especially in these turbulent and uncertain times that we live in. So let us preserve, perpetuate and teach our youth about our glorious Orthodox faith. This in turn will strengthen the bond between us and God for generations to come. I'd like to express a special and heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the outgoing Parish Council members for their hard work, dedication and commitment to our church. Because of your collective and tireless efforts, and the overwhelming support by you and our parishioners through donations, a number of projects undertaken this year by the Parish Council were beautifully accomplished with no cost to our church. All of you will be truly missed. We, however, are encouraged and take comfort in knowing that you will be close by so that we can call upon you from time to time for your help and guidance.
