Epiphany - Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Tarpon Springs, Florida + Sunday, February 5, 2017 St Photios, February 6
WEEKLY MESSAGE Today we begin a journey. I wouldn t call it a new one, since we take it every year, but a journey to a new place. Today we begin a special season the Church calls the Triodion, a journey to Great Lent. Beginning today, the Church invites us to consider the condition of our soul as we take this spiritual journey. The Church invites us to consider first if we want to join Christ in heaven, and second if we are willing to take the necessary action required of a believer in Jesus Christ. This journey is a three-week (four-sunday) journey toward Pascha. Today, the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee, we make our first stop, through which the Church calls us to humble prayer. God be merciful to me, a sinner! (Luke 18.13) In this parable, our Lord compares two well-known realities of people. One humble; the other not. One knew and followed all the religious rules; the other not. One saved; the other not. Through this comparison, the Tridion prepares us for Great Lent by asking us to look inside our heart with tough questions. Do we think we are better than others? Do we think our sins are less important than others? Do we think lives are better examples of holiness than others? Do we think our sins separate us from God? Do we think our sins have control over our future? Do we think our sins need to be forgiven by God? How you answer these questions will affect the way you spend the next several weeks between now and Pascha. If you answer by comparing yourself to how others are so much worse and act so much worse than you, then you will lose the opportunity that awaits you on this year s journey. If you answer by saying how your life is so much better than others, then you will lose the opportunity the Church offers you on this year s journey. If you already think you re holy, then you have already lost the chance to grow closer to God during this year s journey. If, on the other hand, you realize that your life isn t as close to God as you originally thought, or that you wouldn t dare to even look up to heaven for fear He may see into your heart, then -- lucky for you -- this year s journey will be just in time. Congratulations! You have already learned the lesson of true Christian humility. If you are willing to accept that you are a sinner that needs to repent (change your way of viewing the world), then you have already won the battle to invite God to live in your heart. This year s journey is familiar, because you are invited to travel each year -- but have you ever accepted the Church s invitation to join her on the path to Pascha? Have you ever accepted that, despite how good you may think you already are, or how sinless you may think you are, we all have a long way to go to become like God.

EPISTLE II Timothy 3:10-15 T imothy, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at lconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. GOSPEL Luke 18:10-14 T he Lord said this parable, "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

Resurrectional Apolytikion You descended from on high, O compassionate One, and condescended to be buried for three days, so that from the passions You might set us free. Our life and resurrection, O Lord, glory be to You. Of the Feast Lady full of grace, rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, for Christ our God, the Sun of righteousness has risen from you and He illumined those in darkness. And you, righteous Elder, be glad in heart, receiving in your embraces the One who liberates our souls and bestows on us the Resurrection. Of the Church As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion You sanctified the virginal womb by Your birth, O Lord, and blessed the hands of Symeon fittingly, O Christ God; and even now You came and saved us. Now, give peace to our Nation in time of war, and empower our Leaders, so loved by You, the only one who loves humanity.
Saints and Feasts of the Week ST PHOTIOS THE GREAT, PATRIARCH OF CONSTANTINOPLE This great Father and teacher of the Church, the Confessor of the Faith and Equal to the Apostles, lived during the 9th century. He was the son of pious parents, Sergius and Irene, who suffered for the Faith under the Iconoclast Emperor Theophilus; he was also a nephew of Saint Tarasius, Patriarch of Constantinople. An upright and honorable man of singular learning and erudition, he was raised to the apostolic, ecumenical, and patriarchal throne of Constantinople in 857. The many struggles that this thrice-blessed one undertook for the Orthodox Faith against many heretics, and the assaults that he endured from Nicholas I, the Pope of Rome, and the great persecutions and distresses he suffered, are beyond number. Contending against the Latin error of the filioque, that is, the doctrine that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son, he demonstrated clearly with his Mystagogy on the Holy Spirit how the filioque destroys the unity and equality of the Trinity. He has left us many theological writings, panegyric homilies, and epistles. He departed to the Lord in the Monastery of the Armenians on February 6, 891. ST HARALAMBOS This Saint was a priest of the Christians in Magnesia, the foremost city of Thessaly, in the diocese of the same name. He contested during the reign of Alexander Severus (222-235), when Lucian was Proconsul of Magnesia. At the time of his martyrdom the Saint was 103 years of age.
