Course Title : Quantitative methods with applications to social development and European trends Course code : - Course type 1 : Mandatory Level Course (Undergraduate / Postgraduate ) : Postgraduate Year of study : First Semester: B Number of credits (ECTS): Number didactic units: Name of lecturer / teacher : Konstantinos Rontos 1 Mandatory, selection, etc., depending on the categories of courses which are available in each section.
Course content 2 ( 100-300 words) : This course includes the development of basic methods and techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics, which is necessary in a modern social scientist in order to make the best use of the statistical data, which he/she primarily or secondarily collects, under the research activity. Understanding and use of these techniques allows him to be able to describe social phenomena or events, predict their evolution or correlate social variables and investigate causal relationships. The course will focus particularly on the applications of these techniques in social and demographic data related to European level, since the demographic developments in Europe are the basis of many socio - economic changes, which require research, scientific interpretations and decisions at European and national level. Second part of the application will be the issues of social development and even at local and regional level, that presented, while the consolidation methods, with real data, and trends governing regional disparities. Then, the upcoming lectures are representing and we believe that basically cover the knowledge of statistical and demographic analysis should have a welltrained social scientist. Students will learn theory methods of data analysis and will be exercised in their application with SPSS. The learning of the mathematical background, based on which methods of analysis will be conducted on a basic level, while the course will focus especially on understanding of how to select and apply the appropriate methods and use of these results for research and decision-making. The applications on topics related to social and demographic situation and migration flows to Europe will also contribute to the understanding of the developments and their importance in the investigation of these causes and identifying the policies that will be applied to the solution related problems. SKILLS ARE GOING TO BE ACQUIRED: By the end of the course the student will have acquired the following knowledge and will develop their respective skills: Understanding of basic statistical techniques and demography and the ability to be properly implemented. The ability to use statistics and general special computer programs for analyzing data. Understanding Europe the social and demographic affairs of Greece, at the regional level and Prerequisites (up to 50 words) : The successful attend of recommended courses, requires basic knowledge of descriptive statistic, which are taught during the undergraduate level in almost all the departments of Universities. In any case, in the introductory of the course will be an overview of the 3 Learning outcomes: statements of what the person who learns, knows, understands and is able to do after the end of the learning process and are defined in terms of knowledge, skills and abilities. These include : Knowledge, Skills, Abilities. See more : http://ec.europa.eu/education/lifelong-learning-policy/eqf_en.htm
important elements of descriptive statistics. Moreover, given that the program is interdisciplinary, the courses provide to be so flexible to cover some basic gaps (predecessor) in curriculum (if it is necessary ) to an extent not at the expense of advanced methods, so that the program deals with the level of Master. Teaching and learning methods (up to 100 words): The program will be carried out both theoretical and practical level, with emphasis on the use of statistical and other packages for the processing and analysis of statistical data. Also, as part of the course, students will engage actively in the analysis through their work research on issues related to demographic and social issues. In this way, students will be directly involved in the analysis of actual research results and the whole process will be presented in the last lesson of the students in the audience. Intermediates, the work of students will be presented in part and there will be feedback from the tutor. Methods of assessment / rating (up to 100 words) : To achieve the purpose of the course, students should be actively involved in the lesson, deal, on an ongoing basis, beyond teaching hours, with the application of techniques and the use of IT tools, to carry out their work on time and to the present it in public. The
examination will include research work in the analysis phase and intermediate tests. The ability to readily presentation of work, in addition to writing, will be a key criterion. For the students evaluation, the active participation in the course is taken seriously in consideration. Research paper will be distributed to students at the beginning of the course and will be done / monitored gradually with progress of the course.
