WEEKLY MESSAGE Every summer when I announce the beginning of the Fast for the Holy Apostles I hear all sorts of confusion from people. Some have never even heard about the Fast for the Holy Apostles, and many don t understand why this Fast is different from Great Lent and the other Fasts. Here are few things to help clear up the confusion about this new and strange Fast. The Fast begins on the Monday after All Saints (this year that was June 12) and lasts until the Feast of the Holy Apostles (where it gets its name). It can be as long as one month during years when Pascha is early, but on years when Pascha is in May, it may not exist at all. This year it is almost three weeks long. This Fast is not as strict as Great Lent, and is sometimes called a white fast because we can eat fish. Here is where the confusion gets out of control. If someone fasts only from meat during Great Lent, then this Fast doesn t seem any less strict than Great Lent. Here are some generic guidelines for the Fast of the Holy Apostles that should eliminate some confusion: If you have never fasted for this Fast before, at a minimum you should fast from meat every day until June 30 th, which is the Feast of the Holy Apostles. On Wednesdays and Fridays you should increase your fasting to include dairy and eggs. In this way, we can maintain the character of the Church cycle for fasting as a spiritual discipline. If you are able to fast more, then you should, with the accompanying increase on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you have fasted for this Fast before, offer God a little more this year. Our goal should be to always grow spiritually and offer to God more than we did last year. Ultimately we must remember that fasting is a spiritual discipline first and foremost. Like any commandment from God, fasting is meant to teach us how to live. When we fast as the Church guides us, we very quickly learn to embrace the art of following rather than leading. We must follow Christ into heaven. We can t lead Him into heaven. Fasting as the Church guides us, helps to perfect the skill of following Christ. This is why I always speak of the importance of not choosing our own fast, but fasting as the Church guides us. When we choose our own rules, we quite frankly are not learning how to deny ourselves, but the opposite becomes true. It begins with, I think fasting should be like this... and ends up with, I think the Gospel means this... The life of the Church has so many benefits since it is guided by the Holy Spirit. If only we took the time to learn about why we do what we do as Orthodox Christians and embrace that when we follow the life of the Church we benefit both spiritually and physically. So today...we FAST!

EPISTLE Romans 2:10-16 B rethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. GOSPEL Matthew 4:18-23 A t that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion O Protection of Christians unshamable, mediation with the Creator immovable, we sinners beg you, do not despise the voices of our prayers, but anticipate, since you are good, and swiftly come unto our aid as we cry out to you with faith: Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who defend now and ever those who honor you.

Saints and Feasts of the Week NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST The Prophet who received God's testimony that he surpassed all Prophets was born of the aged and barren Elizabeth and filled all his kinsmen with gladness and wonder. But even more wondrous was what followed the eighth day when he was circumcised, that is, the day on which a male child receives his name: Those present called him Zacharias, the name of his father. But the child's father, who was unable to speak, asked for a tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And Zacharias' mouth was opened, his tongue was loosed from its silence of nine months, and filled with the Holy Spirit, he blessed the God of Israel, Who had fulfilled the promises made to their fathers, and had sent to them the light of salvation. And the child John, who was filled with grace, grew and waxed strong in the Spirit. His name is a variation of the Hebrew "Johanan," meaning "Yah is gracious."
