The Gospel Reading: St. John 12:1-18 Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.
No Time or No Love? Many persons complain that they have no time to read the word of God. But it is not really a question of time as it is of love. We always find time to do the things we like to do. For example, there was once a girl who just did not care to read a certain book. Later, however, she fell in love with the author of the book. All of a sudden her whole attitude changed. She read the book over and over again, very eagerly. Έλλειψη καιρού ή έλλειψη αγάπης; Πολλοί παραπονιούνται ότι δεν έχουν καιρό να διαβάσουν «τον Λόγον του Θεού». Ήταν, λέει, κάποτε μία κοπέλα που δεν την ενδιέφερε να διαβάσει ένα συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο. Αργότερα, η κοπέλα γνώρισε και αγάπησε τον συγγραφέα του βιβλίου. Αμέσως η συμπεριφορά της άλλαξε. Διάβασε το βιβλίο ξανά, και ξανά. When we fall in love with the author (Jesus) it will not be a chore to read His personal letter to us. It will be pure delight. It has been said that the two people who read the Bible most carefully are the atheist and the saint. The atheist because he hates; the saint because he loves. Όταν αγαπήσουμε τον συγγραφέα (Ιησούς) δεν θα νοιώθουμε ως αγγαρεία την ανάγνωση των εντολών του. Αντίθετα, η ανάγνωσή τους θα είναι καθαρή απόλαυση. Father Florovsky has written No one profits from the Gospels unless he is first in love with Christ. For Christ is not a text but a living Person, and He abides in His body, the Church. The highest form of Bible reading comes to those who love Jesus so much that to read His word is sheer enjoyment. They savour the sweetness of being with Him through His word. Τα λόγια Του είναι καθαρή απόλαυση για αυτούς γιατί Τον φέρνουν κοντά τους και τους κάνουν να γεύονται την γλυκύτητα της παρουσίας Του. We must not expect God always to be giving insights when we read his word. Reading God s word is also a way of being with God, basking in His presence, practicing His presence. A father goes fishing with his child not just to catch fish but also just to be with his child. Όταν διαβάζουμε τα λόγια του Θεού δεν θα πρέπει να περιμένουμε, πάντα, και κάποια ενόραση. Η ανάγνωση των λόγων του Θεού είναι ένας τρόπος για να βρισκόμαστε κοντά στο Θεό.
