Holy Tradition, of which Holy Scripture is a part, includes the writings, teachings, and acts of the apostles, saints, martyrs, and fathers of the Church, and her liturgical and sacramental traditions throughout the ages, the oral tradition of the early Church, and the decisions of the Ecumenical Councils. Since we place such importance on the teachings of the fathers of the Church, we look to them for guidance on the basic teachings of our Faith. Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite, or Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain, (1749-1809) was an ascetic monk, mystic, theologian, and philosopher. His life's work was a revival of traditional Christian practices, and patristic literature. He wrote ascetic prayer literature and influenced the rediscovery of Hesychasm, a method of contemplative prayer from the Byzantine period. He is most famous for his work with Saint Makarios of Corinth on the anthology of monastic spiritual writings known as The Philokalia. He was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 1955. Explanation of the Lord s Prayer by Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite The Lord s Prayer, my brothers, according to Saint Maximos, includes seven lofty subjects: theology, sonship, equality with the angels, the enjoyment of eternal life, the restoration of human nature, the destruction of the law of sin, and the abolition of the tyranny of the devil. The beginning of the Our Father includes the subjects of theology and sonship for it simultaneously teaches us that God is by nature the Father of the Son and the emitter [issuer - (Gr) proboleus] of the Holy Spirit, and that, according to creation and grace, He is our Father and we His sons. The words, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven, include the subject of equality with the angels by which words we ask to be united with the angels, and, just as the will of God in heaven is done by the angels in heaven, so also must His will be done by us who are on the earth. The phrase, Give us this day our [daily] bread, includes the subject of the enjoyment of eternal life. The restoration and union of human nature is attested to by the words, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors for when we forgive our enemies, we are united and no longer divided because of a difference of opinion and will. The distancing of sin far from us is disclosed by the words, And lead us not into temptation, and by saying this we ask that we not enter into temptation proceeding from the law of sin. And the phrase, But deliver us from the evil one, represents the destruction of the devil s tyranny. This teaching of our Lord is called a prayer because it encompasses all that man should ask from God and all that is fitting for God to give to man. The prayer is divided into three parts: 1) doxology and praise of God; 2) thanksgiving to God for His past, present, and future blessings; and 3) supplication for the forgiveness of our sins and for the sins of our brethren and various other supplications.

Give me words, Word of the Father, for behold, I shall not keep my lips from crying out to You, "O Merciful One, have mercy on me who has fallen." Cheesefare Sunday, also called Sunday of Forgiveness Today is called Cheesefare Sunday because it is the last day dairy products or eggs are eaten before Easter for those keeping the Lenten Fast. It is also called Sunday of Forgiveness, which refers to the onset of Great Lent, a period of intense fasting and a reminder of our need for God s forgiveness. Great Lent guides our hearts, minds, and spiritual efforts on returning to Him in repentance. The first day of Great Lent is tomorrow, February 27, and is called Clean Monday.
THE EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4 Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them. God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel. Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand. THE GOSPEL Matthew 6:14-21 The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
