This spring the Greek Festival Committee is asking all herb gardeners to include extra plantings of thyme, basil, rosemary, and oregano, which later can be sold at the Festival. These herbs are most welcome additions in the Greek Grocery. If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact Stacy Rico at FESTIVAL CHAIRPERSONS MEETING The first 2014 Greek Festival chairpersons meeting is Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 7:30 pm in the Coffee Room. See you there! FESTIVAL PASTRY WORKSHOPS Pastry preparations for the 2014 Greek Festival will continue this Wednesday, March 5, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Yes, the day after Mardi Gras! Some parishioners will remember when he served as Consul for the Consulate of Greece in New Orleans from 1979 to The Cathedral family welcomes Ambassador Tsikouris to Holy Trinity and looks forward to greeting him in the Coffee Room. HELLENIC DANCERS The Hellenic Dancers practices are underway in preparation for the upcoming annual Greek Festival. 2 Ionian Village summer camping programs are open to teenagers, who have completed grades 8 through 12. The sessions allow campers to experience life in a fully Orthodox environment as they travel to historic churches and religious sites across Greece. The Orthodox Faith is at the heart of the Ionian Village program. Session 1: June 23 - July 12, 2014 Session 2: July 20 - August 8, 2014 AHEPA The recently elected officers of AHEPA are in the process of restructuring the local chapter. With this goal in mind, they are seeking individuals interested in joining the organization, as well as inactive members interested in reinstating. SATURDAY OF SOULS Orthodoxy believes that through our prayers, those "who have fallen asleep in the faith and the hope of the Resurrection" continue to have opportunity to grow closer to God. Therefore, the Church prays constantly for her members, who have died in Christ. We place our trust in the love of God and the power of mutual love and forgiveness. We pray that God will forgive the sins of the departed faithful and that He will receive them into the company of Saints in the heavenly Kingdom. The Orthodox Church remembers the departed in the prayers of every Divine Liturgy. Besides this, there is a Memorial Service in which the Church also remembers the dead. According to tradition, the Memorial Service is offered on the third, ninth, and fortieth day after a death, as well as on the yearly anniversary of the death. In addition to these times, the Memorial Service is always offered for all the faithful departed on four "Saturdays of Souls." These are the two Saturdays preceding Great Lent, the first Saturday of Great Lent, and the Saturday before Pentecost. When the Memorial Service is offered, it is customary for the family of the deceased to bring a dish of boiled wheat to the Church. The boiled wheat is placed on a table in the center of the nave during the Service. The wheat, known as kollyva, is a symbol of the Resurrection. When speaking of the Resurrection, our Lord said: "Unless the grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies it bears much fruit." (John 12:24). Please note that the next Saturday of Souls service will be March 8, 2014, beginning at 9:00 am. Forms for listing names of your loved ones are in the Narthex. 150TH CELEBRATION Thank you to all parishioners for supporting the 150 th Anniversary Kick Off Epiphany Celebration in January. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral 150 th Anniversary Celebration continues with activities planned throughout the year. Mark your calendars for the celebratory week-end events to be held on October 10 12, In addition, the history of our Church will be showcased at the Louisiana Children s Museum Children s World s Fair on Saturday, March 22; the Greek Festival in May; community programs; historical exhibits; and other planned events. 3 YOUTH HYMNOLOGY PROGRAM During March, Sunday School students will learn the Easter hymn "Christos Anesti - Christ is Risen!" Parents and grandparents are asked to reinforce at home the learning of this very important hymn. Cheesefare Sunday, also called Sunday of Forgiveness Today is called Cheesefare Sunday because it is the last day dairy products or eggs are eaten before Easter for those keeping the Lenten Fast. It is also called Sunday of Forgiveness, which refers to the onset of Great Lent, a period of intense fasting and a reminder of our need for God s forgiveness. Great Lent guides our hearts, minds, and spiritual efforts on returning to Him in repentance. The first day of Great Lent is tomorrow, March 3, and is called Clean Monday.

Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand. THE GOSPEL Matthew 6:14-21 The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
