Have you read the books or seen the films about Harry Potter? Many of us wish we could learn to do magic like the characters in those stories. But where could we learn? Reading #1 How the Animals Got Their Tails Many, many years ago, animals used to walk and talk just like people do today. They used to meet their friends, have fun, and sing and dance together.

One evening, the animals planned a big party. When night fell, the animals all came to a big open space in the middle of a forest. Above them the sky was clear and the stars were bright. The moon shone down like a big lamp, so they could see the way clearly. When the animals arrived at the party, they took off their tails and hung them on the Tail Tree, the same way as we humans take off our hats and coats and hang them up when we enter a house or restaurant. Soon the tree was covered with tails, and the soft grass in the clearing was full of animals laughing and singing and having a great time. Suddenly, however, the sky grew dark. A cloud covered the moon. At first, they thought it was funny, and began to play games in the dark. They touched each other, trying to guess who was who. But the sky did not clear, and from far away they heard a crackling sound like tree branches breaking. They saw a bright orange light between the trees, and then on the wind they smelled the smell that scares animals most of all: smoke! The animals all ran to the Tail Tree and reached for their tails, hurrying to escape. The frightened animals quickly took any tail they could find. The fire was getting closer, and they could feel the heat through the trees. An angry red light was coming towards them. They began to run, racing through the darkness of the forest ahead of them toward the river. They swam to safety on the other side. When the sun came up the next morning, the animals looked back across the river to the blackened forest. Nothing was left of their favorite place except a few smoking tree trunks. But at least they were safe. As the day became lighter, they looked around at each other and began to laugh. They looked so silly! The great big elephant had put on a short gray tail, and the fat lazy pig was wearing a pretty little pink thing. The thin fox had a soft hairy tail almost as big as he was, and the giraffe s tail hung down almost to its knees. Some tails were the wrong color, or were made of the wrong skin or fur. Other animals discovered that they had no tails at all! The burnt forest took years and years to grow again, and of course the animals had to move far away to find a new place to live. It was so long before they had another party that when they finally did have one, they forgot how to take off their tails and so they kept them on forever. 101. Reading #2 When the Telephone Was New The telephone was invented in 1876, in Philadelphia. One of the first people to get a phone in his own house was the American writer Mark Twain, who wrote Tom Sawyer and was known for making people laugh. He enjoyed talking on 5 his new phone, and so did his wife. And when she talked, Twain listened. What he heard, of course, was half a conversation. Before the invention of the telephone, if you listened to people talking, you heard both sides of what was said. Now you heard just one side. Twain wrote, "You 1 hear the question, but not the answer, or you hear the 0 answer and wonder what the question was. Mark Twain wrote down some of his wife's conversations and gave them to a newspaper to be printed. They went something like this one, in which Twain s wife is talking to one of her friends: The store? What did you buy? [Pause]. What? [Pause]. Oh, your hat. I thought you said your cat! You ll probably find it. [Long pause]. I can t be perfectly sure, because I don't have the music, but I think it goes like this: Tra-la-la-tra-la-la, tum-de-dum-de dum! And then repeat, you know. [Pause]. Oh, not at all go right on. He s here writing he doesn t mind. [Pause]. Visitors? [Pause]. No, I never put salt on them. I just serve them as they are. [Pause]. Does that sound strange to you? Probably not! After all, everybody uses mobile phones these days, and we re used to hearing pieces of conversations.
