Sigmatic ( with sigma ) 1 st aor. stem formation (a) παιδεύ ω educate: 1. add sigma => παιδεύσ 2. add alpha to stem => παιδεύσα except for certain forms 3 rd sing. active indic. ε(ν), 2 nd sing. active imperat. ον, 2 nd sing. middle indic. ω. 3. form aor indicative stem with AUGMENT ἐ παίδευσα. But not imperative, inf, ptc.! 4. Consonant & vowel stem changes as with sigmatic future forms: λείβω (pour) labial stems. I poured ἔλειψα. σπεύδω ἔσπευσα. dental stem δ ζ τ θ: make it σ πράττω (root πρακ, accomplish, do ) velar κ χ γ ξ θεωρέω (vowel contract verb) lengthen stem vowel: ἐθεώρησα.

In later sense of address to a crowd, becomes root for English homily. γεραιός, ά, όν. aged. from γέρων, old man. ὀρθός, ή, όν, straight, right correct. (Compare English orthopedics. ) τάχιστα very/most quickly is superlative adv. from adjective ταχύς, εῖα, ύ, fast. ὡς τάχιστα, as quickly as possible. I.e., ὡς plus any superlative adj/adv = as X as possible. καίπερ. with participles, carries concessive force: καίπερ τρέχων, ὅμως ἀφικνεῖται οὐκ ἐν ὥρᾳ. Although hurrying, still, he arrives not on time. ἐξ ηγοῦμαι τί ὁ Φίλιππος ἔπαθεν. I relate/explain/describe/recount/tell what Philip suffered. Compound verb from ἡγέομαι, as in ἡγοῦμαι τοῖς φίλοις, I guide/lead my friends. φαίνομαι πονεῖν ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ. I appear to work (φαίνομαι + inf) in the field. φαίνομαι πονῶν ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ. I am manifestly/obviously/plain to see working (φαίνομαι + ptc) in the field. ἔμπορος merchant ναύκληρος ship captain ναύτης sailor (from ναῦς) τότε then, at that time 6. Irregular/Quasi irregular 1 st Aorist Stems Verb stems in present ending in μ, ν, λ, ρ usually don t use sigma for 1 st aor. Aorist stem can differ from present, for instance, iota added or dropped. (But study each verb as special no hard and fast rule!) EXAMPLES: μένω (pres.), μενῶ (fut. not μένσω!), ἔμεινα (aor. not ἔμενσα!), LIFT αἴρω (pres.), ἀρῶ (fut. not αἴρσω!), ἦρα (aor. not ᾔρσα!), LIFT 7. Challenging principal parts (first 3) so far...
