Today s Appointed Pericope Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16 Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day."

REFLECTIONS ON TODAY'S GOSPEL READING From Saint Catherine's Vision, an international, Pan-Orthodox fellowship of Orthodox Women Theologians In today s Gospel, Matthew 17: 14-23, Jesus Christ heals a man s son who suffered from being an epileptic and falling into the fire and water because of a demon after he beseeched Him saying, Lord, have mercy When His disciples asked Jesus why they, themselves, couldn t heal him, He said, Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move hence to yonder place, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you... In another Gospel reading, Matthew 13:31-32, Jesus Christ compares the mustard seed to the Kingdom of Heaven when He said, The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches. In both pieces of Scripture Christ Jesus uses imagery to show us that with little faith, as small as a mustard seed, God will answer us, make our faith stronger, make it grow, and make it bear fruit! Faith as big as a mustard seed means to trust in Him, that He can make the impossible possible. Faith like a mustard seed means to depart, pray, venture, and through His name use the power for His will. Faith as big as a mustard seed reinforces that indeed miracles happen in the church. A mustard seed measures 1-2mm, and yet grows into a large shrub about 10-12 feet tall bearing more seeds! If we allow our faith, even as little as a mustard seed, through His word to be sown into our hearts, germinate, and grow into a great shrub bearing His fruit, all is possible and nothing impossible by God. May we all like mustard seeds, through our faith, allow God s will to be done giving all glory and honor, to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever, amen! Ὁ Ἰησοῦς Χριστός εἶναι ὁ γιατρός και παιδαγωγός τῶν παιδιῶν μας: Ὁ σεληνιαζόμενος νέος τῆς περικοπῆς μας εἶναι μιά ζωντανή εἰκόνα τῆς κοινωνίας μας καί μάλιστα τῶν νέων μας. Στό πρόσωπό του μποροῦμε νά δοῦμε ἕναν μεγάλο ἀριθμό παιδιῶν τῆς ἐποχῆς μας, πού χωρίς Χριστό κυριεύθηκαν ἀπό τό πονηρό πνεῦμα. Ἄλλες φορές τά καταλαμβάνει τό ἄλαλο πνεῦμα. Χωρίς λόγο δέν μιλοῦν στούς γονεῖς τους. Τό σπίτι γίνεται γι αὐτούς ἕνα ξενοδοχεῖο, ὅπου ἔρχονται μόνο γιά νά φᾶνε καί νά κοιμηθοῦν! Κι ἄλλοτε πάλι τά κυριεύει τό πνεῦμα τοῦ ὑλισμοῦ, τῆς ἀθεΐας καί τῆς διαφθορᾶς, πού τά βασανίζει τόσο φρικτά. Ἐνῶ ἔχουν τόσα ἀγαθά, εἶναι πεινασμένα κι ἀνικανοποίητα, ψάχνουν τή χαρά στά ναρκωτικά, γιά νά ἐξαθλιώσουν μ αὐτά ὁλότελα τόν ἑαυτό τους. Ἡ νεολαία μας, πού ζῆ μακριά ἀπό τόν Χριστό, συχνά σάν τόν σεληνιαζόμενο νέο τρίζει τά δόντια της ὀργισμένη καί ἀφρίζει, σχίζει τά ροῦχα της, αὐτοκαταστρέφεται. Δέν ξέρει τί θέλει. Κι ἄλλοτε τή βλέπουμε νά πέφτει στό νερό τῆς ἀπελπισίας κι ἄλλοτε στή φωτιά τῆς αὐτοκτονίας. Σ ὅλους ἐμᾶς πού μέ πόνο παρακολουθοῦμε τήν ἐξαθλίωση καί τή διαφθορά τῶν παιδιῶν μας, ἡ σημερινή περικοπή δίνει μία ἀπάντηση καί μᾶς συστήνει ἕνα ἐγγυημένο μέσο θεραπείας: Νά φέρουμε τά παιδιά μας στόν Χριστό. Αὐτός εἶναι ὁ παντοδύναμος γιατρός, πού μπορεῖ νά τά θεραπεύσει, εἶναι ὁ πάνσοφος διδάσκαλος, πού μπορεῖ νά τά διδάξει καί νά τά μορφώσει.
SCHEDULE OF THE FEAST OF THE DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY On Monday, August 14 th, our parish will hold the Vespers service for this major feast beginning at 7:00 PM. Following the Vespers services we will continue with the Epitafio Service and the Engomia of Panagia, a duplicate service from Gesthemane, the burial site of our Panagia in Jerusalem. A litany of the Burial Shroud of our Panagia that we treasure in our Shrine of Gesthemane will follow around the exterior of our church. On the day of the feast, Tuesday, August 15 th, Orthros will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. A litany of the Burial Shroud of our Panagia will follow around the exterior of our church. The Liturgy and the Litany will end at 11:00 am. We invite you to celebrate with us during the festivities and pay tribute to our patron saint. Τήν Δευτέρα, Αυγούστου 14, η κοινότητά μας θα τελέσει πανηγυρικό Εσπερινό στις 7:00 μ. μ.. Στην συνέχεια θα τελέσουμε την ακολουθία του Επιταφίου και των εγκωμίων της Παναγίας. Στό τέλος τών Εγκωμίων θά γίνη γύρω από τήν εκκλησία η περιφορά τού σκηνώματος τής Παναγίας τό οποίο φυλασσεται στό παρεκκλήσιο τής Γεθσημανής μέσα στόν ναό μας. Η λιτανεία αυτή είναι μια ακολουθία που τελείται στον τάφο της Παναγίας στην Γεθσημανή, στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Θα τελέσουμε επίσης αρτοκλασία για τους εορτάζοντες. Ανήμερα της Κοιμήσεως, Τρίτη, Αυγούστου 15, ο Ορθρος θα αρχίσει στις 9:00 π.μ. και η Θεία Λειτουργία και η Λιτανεία θά γίνει από 9:30 π.μ. έως και 11:00 π.μ.. This icon of the burial shroud of the Mother of God is the kind donation of Mrs. Maria Pappas Smith & family in memory of their beloved parents and grandparents +Aristodemos & +Vasilia Pappas. The iconography under the silver cover is the work of the famous iconographer George Fillipakis. The silver cover is the work of the silversmith artist of religious artifacts Andreas Mazioutas. This icon is kept at the church of Zoodohos Peghe in Pelham Bay, Bronx, NY at the shrine of "Little Gesthemany". The icon above depicts the burial shroud of the Virgin Mary. The icon is an exact copy of the burial shroud that is kept at the church of " Little Gesthemane" that is located in the proper of the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. On August 12, at the second hour of the night, the abbot of the Gethsemane church celebrates Divine Liturgy. With the end of Liturgy, at the fourth hour of the morning, the abbot of Gesthemane, lifts the resplendent burial shroud in his hands and solemnly carries it in a procession called "Litania" beyond the church to Gethsemane proper where the Holy Sepulchre of the Mother of God is situated. The rite of the Burial of the Mother of God at Gethsemane begins customarily on the morning of August 14. A multitude of people with hierarchs and clergy at the head set off from the Jerusalem Patriarchate in sorrowful procession. Along the narrow alley-ways of the Holy City the funeral procession makes its way to Gethsemane. The procession, going along for about two hours, concludes with Lamentations at the Gethsemane church. In front of the altar, beyond the burial chamber of the Mother of God, is a raised-up spot, upon which rests the burial shroud of the Most Holy Mother of God among fragrant flowers and myrtle, with precious coverings. On the day of the Leave-taking of the feast (August 23), another solemn procession is made. On the return path, the holy burial shroud is carried by clergy led by the abbot of Gethsemane and placed again in the church of "Little Gesthemane" in Jerusalem.
