HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 -- PHONE (847) 647-8880 Web: SaintHaralambosGOC.org Fr. Constantine P. Botsis, Proistamenos Deacon John G. Suhayda Fr. George Lamberis, Synefemerios Nick Harisiadis, Protopsaltis THE ROLE OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL IN OUR LIVES Angels are ministering spirits who are sent to minister to us for our future salvation (Heb.1:14) God gave the nations their inheritance, when He divided all mankind, He set up boundaries for the people according to the number of angels of God (Deut 32:8). They were created before the physical world and humanity. The Archangels Michael and Gabriel serve the work of the Divine Economy for the salvation of humanity, and in Holy Scripture their appearances to specific person are mentioned, in order to transfer to them a message. Such as, for example, the Archangel Michael to the Judge in the Old Testament named Gideon, and the Archangel Gabriel to the Theotokos and to Zachariah, the father of the Honorable Forerunner, etc. At Baptism, God sends every believer an Angel for their protection, to remind them of God s will and rebuke them when they sin, in order to lead them to repentance. That is, to help them return to the path that leads to communion with God when they have gone astray. This creates joy, since repentance is associated with eternal divine life, and this is why heaven celebrates when a person sincerely repents (Lk. 15:7). Saint John of Sinai, the author of The Ladder, in his discourse on discernment, writes on the conscience: Conscience is the word and conviction of our Guardian Angel given to us from the time of Baptism. That is why we find that the unbaptized do not feel such keen pangs of remorse in their soul for their bad deeds. The truth of the presence and work of a Guardian Angel in the lives of the faithful is mentioned in Holy Scripture, in the writings of the Holy Fathers and in the lives of the Saints. In the twelfth chapter of Acts, the Evangelist Luke tells us of the miraculous rescue of the Apostle Peter, who was imprisoned by Herod after the martyric death of the Apostle James. Peter was bound with two chains in prison, and suddenly there appeared before him the Angel of the Lord, who freed him and led him out of prison. He then realized he was not seeing a vision, but this was a reality, so he went to the house of the mouth of the Evangelist Mark, where many believers were gathered, praying for his rescue. The Apostle Peter knocked on the door and waited for an answer. The servant, however, named Rodi, did not answer the door out of enthusiasm when she heard the voice of Peter, but ran to tell the happy news to those gathered there. When she told them the Apostle Peter was knocking on the door, they thought she had lost her mind. When she insisted, however, they said together that it was because of his Guardian Angel (Acts 12:1-6). We see it is clear that the early Christians had personal experiences of the existence of Guardian Angels, rejoicing in their presence and protection. Yet the same occurs today, just as in previous times, with the Saints and those who struggle to achieve their personal sanctification. They sense the presence of their Guardian Angel and some, depending on their inner purity, see them and converse with them. Indeed, internal purity is not achieved magically, but it implies an ascetical and prayerful and sacramental life. When someone by the grace of God and their personal struggle gains dominion over their passions, their nous is illumined, which is the eye of their soul, and they are able to see what their physical eyes cannot. They are able to see the glory of God, the Angels, Saints as well as their Guardian Angel, whom they always feel beside them and protecting them. By Protopresbyter Fr. George Papavarnavas

ANNOUNCEMENTS The Afternoon Greek School PTA invites you to our GOD PARENT SUNDAY LUNCHEON BUFFET after today s church services. PROSPHORA We thank Mrs. Niki Maglaris, the Kanelos Family, Mrs. Loretta Hughes/Politis and Mrs. Pauline Sarantopoulos who have offered today s prosphora. Next week, the prosphora will be offered by Mrs. Zoi Govis, Mrs. Pitsa Serigos, Mrs. Litsa Kalogeros and Mrs. Anastasia Maroutsos (Taxiarchai Tues, Nov 8), and by Presvytera Georgia, Mrs. Dina Margaritis and the Ruggerio Family (Sunday, November 13). MEMORIAL SERVICES Memorial services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. There are some days when Memorials are not permitted please call the church office before planning. Memorials take place at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. After three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. Please also remember that we have discontinued the custom of placing candles in the kolyva. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR AND BAKE SALE--Tell your friends! Our St. Haralambos Philoptochos Ladies have been working hard, and invite you to our 2016 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR AND BAKE SALE, to be held Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19 in our Community Center! Christmas Items, Gifts and Handicrafts will be sold and you can shop for your favorite home-made Greek pastries. Come for dinner on Friday, and lunch on both days! Visit our Coffee Shop, too! We look forward to seeing you at our Christmas Bazaar! COAT DRIVE The St. Haralambos Outreach Program is having a Coat Drive! New and/or gently used kids, women s and men s coats are being collected from now through December 11. A coat in the back of your closet could make a big difference for someone less fortunate facing the cold winter ahead! The goal is for all the donated coats to find their way to those who need them, within and outside our community. ((If you know persons in need of a warm coat, please let us know! WHO CAN RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION?- Because receiving Holy Communion or any other Sacrament is an expression of our acceptance of the dogmatic and moral teachings of the Orthodox Faith, only Orthodox Christians (by baptism or chrismation) in good standing may participate. For this reason, persons who do not agree with these teachings, or not in good standing (for example, married outside the church, or unmarried but sexually active, or civilly divorced but not ecclesiastically divorced), must return to good standing in order to participate in Orthodox Sacraments such as Holy Communion and Unction. This is also why that Orthodox Christians do not receive sacraments in non-orthodox churches. OUR SISTER COMMUNITY OF SAINT NECTARIOS invites you to Great Vespers on Tuesday evening, Nov 8 and Divine Liturgy on Wednesday morning, November 9 in honor of their patron Saint Nectarios. Plan to attend (Liturgy will NOT be celebrated at St. Haralambos on November 9.) PAN-ORTHODOX THANKSGIVING DAY LITURGY will take place at the Protection of the Holy Theotokos Russian Orthodox Cathedral, 1800 Lee Street in Des Plaines at 9:00 am on THANKSGIVING MORNING, Thursday, November 24. This Divine Liturgy is sponsored by The Orthodox Christian Clergy Association of Chicago and by SYNERGY, giving all of us the opportunity to celebrate an "American" holiday in an Orthodox way, together with fellow Orthodox Christians from different backgrounds. The outstanding Cathedral choir will sing the responses, and we urge you to attend this beautiful service! All are welcomed! OUR OUTREACH COMMITTEE has placed a donation box in the narthex to raise money to help people in need. We have been able to help many people THROUGH YOUR GENEROSITY, and we thank you!

STEWARDSHIP 2016! If you have not yet made your 2016 commitments, please do so. There is no minimum, but true stewardship means we set a level of giving in proportion to our resources and income. Our stewardship level should be an amount that reflects our growing love of God and our appreciation for the blessings and benefits we derive from our Church! INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEK ORTHO- DOX LITURGY Deacon John Suhayda invites you to a special series of presentations to study the Divine Liturgy. The study is based on a small book about the Liturgy, written by Fr. Demetrios Treantafeles, and the sessions will include abundant discussion and Q&A. The series is on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm. Join us! ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHRISTMAS GIFT/TOY DRIVE FOR FOSTER CHIL- DREN--Again this year, the Orthodox Christian parishes of Chicago are collecting new toys and gifts to be given to foster children under the DCFS of Cook County.

Epistle and Gospel Readings for Today EPISTLE READING Galatians 1: 11-19 BRETHREN, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. GOSPEL READING Luke 8: 41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

PRAYER TO OUR GUARDIAN ANGEL O Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me all wherein I have sinned this day, and deliver me from all opposing evil of mine enemy, lest I anger my God by any sin. Pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me forth worthy of the kindness and mercy of the All Holy Trinity, and of the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ, and of all the Saints. Amen. SCHEDULE OF SERVICES AND EVENTS THIS WEEK: TODAY IS GODPARENT SUNDAY!!! Mon, Nov 7 GREAT VESPERS FEAST OF HOLY TAXIARHAI 7:00 pm Tues. TODAY S ECCLESIASTICAL CALENDAR Sunday, November 6, 2016 7th Sunday of Luke - Κυριακή Z Λουκά Saint Paul the Confessor, Archbishop of Constantinople. ΑΠΟΛΥΤΙΚΙA ΤΗΣ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ DISMISSAL HYMNS OF THE DAY Apolytikion of the Third Tone Εὐφραινέσθω τὰ οὐράνια, ἀγαλλιάσθω τὰ ἐπίγεια, ὅτι ἐποίησε κράτος, ἐν βραχίονι αὐτοῦ, ὁ Κύριος, ἐπάτησε τῷ θανάτῳ τὸν θάνατον, πρωτότοκος τῶν νεκρῶν ἐγένετο, ἐκ κοιλίας ᾅδου ἐῤῥύσατο ἡμᾶς, καὶ παρέσχε τῷ κόσμῳ τὸ μέγα ἔλεος. Let the Heavens rejoice; let the earthly things be glad; for the Lord has wrought might with His arm, He has trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead has He become. From the belly of Hades He has delivered us, and has granted to the world great mercy. Apolytikion of the Holy Hierarch Supreme Commanders of the heavenly armies, we the unworthy implore you, that by your supplications you encircle us under the cover of the wings of your ineffable glory; guarding us who bow down with fervor crying: Deliver us from dangers, as Leaders of the Powers above. As a pillar unshakable of the Church of Christ, and an ever-radiant lamp to the universe, were you, O wise Haralambos; you illumined the world through martyrdom; you dispelled the moonless night of the idols, o blessed one. Therefore with boldness before Christ, intercede that we may be saved. A protection of Christians unshamable, intercessor to our Holy Maker unwavering. Reject not the voices of sinners in prayer; instead, come, for you are good, to the aid of us who in faith cry out to you. Hasten in intercession, and hurry in supplication O Theotokos, as the protectress for all time of those who honor you.
