(Ραούλ Φαλερώ, - ο ευεργέτης των λεπρών) τις αρχές του 1954 τα παραπάνω λόγια τα Σ διάβασαν δυο φοιτητές, και οι δυο με χριστιανικές αρχές. Κοίταξε ο ένας τον άλλον λες τα λόγια αυτά να είναι και για μας; Υπάρχει τόση άγνοια γύρω μας, τόση θρησκευτική αδιαφορία! Απάντηση δεν μπόρεσαν να δώσουν αμέσως. Η φιλία τους συνέχισε ευχάριστα μέσα στην αισιοδοξία της νιότης. Μετά από λίγες εβδομάδες, σε ένα περίπατο στο Βοτανικό Κήπο του Σύδνεϋ, απεκάλυπτε ο ένας στον άλλον τις σκέψεις του για το θέμα που είχαν αντιμετωπίσει. Βρέθηκαν να έχουν την ίδια γνώμη - τα λόγια του ποιητή ήταν και γι αυτούς! Και τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε; Αν μιλήσουμε ποιος θα μας ακούσει; Και να μιλήσουμε, τι θα πούμε στους ανθρώπους; Να φέρουμε χριστιανικά βιβλία από την Ελλάδα, που θα εκθέτουν σωστά τον λόγο του Θεού! Ίσως αυτό να βοηθήσει μερικούς να αποκτήσουν επίγνωση της πίστεώς τους, αλλά και να φέρει κοντά μας και άλλους με τα ίδια ιδανικά! Ο π. Κοσμάς Κλαβίδης της Αγίας Σοφίας του Paddington και ο π. Θεοφύλακτος, επικροτεί! Τα βιβλία άρχισαν να έρχονται και να πωλούνται αργά στην αρχή, αλλά με γοργό ρυθμό σε λίγους μήνες. Σε λίγο έρχονται τρεις ακόμη νέοι να συμμετάσχουν στην προσπάθεια και να βοηθήσουν το έργο της ιεραποστολής. Αναπάντεχη ευλογία του Κυρίου! Μετά τα Χριστούγεννα του 1954, μας καλεί ο Μητροπολίτης και μας προτείνει να ιδρυθεί μια Χριστιανική Νεολαία, που θα μπορέσει να ελκύσει και άλλους νέους που συνεχώς καταφθάνουν από την Ελλάδα. Η Ένωση αυτή ιδρύεται στις 5 Φεβρουαρίου 1955. Το ιδρυτικό πρωτόκολλό της περιείχε τις υπογραφές 11 μελών! Ο τίτλος της, «Χριστιανική Ένωσις Ελλήνων Νέων», και πρώτος εξομολόγος ο ίδιος ο Μητροπολίτης! Page 2 ΛΥΧΝΟΣ hy Sunday Schools? There has never been on W earth a people or tribe or nation without the pursuit of a higher power, the search for a God! This search begins very early in life, certainly by the age of 4 or 5 years, when children begin to ask questions about actions and happenings in their environment. Because of the above characteristics of childhood, the Church being the spiritual mother of every person, took great interest to teach its children the will of God, so that they may develop into spiritually healthy men and women and be able to defend themselves against the evils in the society in which they will later live. Church in the next building. In 1959, the then head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia, Metropolitan Theophylactos, was killed in Children of the first Sunday School of Saint Sophia in 1956. The two founding members of the Greek Orthodox Christian Society, Mr Phidias Kyriakides (left) and Dr Michael Anthony (right), can be discerned in the back row In Sydney, this task had been undertaken by the Greek Orthodox Christian Society, at the request of the Archdiocese and the blessings of our then Archbishop. 1955 - The first Sunday School was started in the classroom of the afternoon Greek school, Todman Avenue, Kensington. There were about 50 children and lessons were held on Fridays, from 4.45 to 5.30 pm. 1956 - The second Sunday School was started in the hall of the then Cathedral Church of Saint Sophia, in Napier Street, Paddington. The lessons were held on Saturday mornings, from 10 to 11 am. 1957 - A third Church was established in Sydney, in Abercrombie Street, Redfern, with name of the Dormition of Our Lady. A Sunday School was established there within weeks, and lessons were held on Sundays, from 9 to 10.00 am. This had the great advantage that the children could then attend the Holy Liturgy at the Father John Evangelinidis with Sunday School pupils following a special Divine Liturgy held for the children in 1961 at the Church of Holy Trinity, Surry Hills. About 300 children attended the Service an motor vehicle accident. He was succeeded by His Eminence, Archbishop Ezekiel in 1960, who proceeded with great fervour to create more parishes so as to serve the large number of immigrants arriving at the time from Greece. In Sydney the first new parish established was that of St. George, Rose Bay in 1960, followed soon after by St. Spyridon, Kingsford, St. Nicholas, Marrickville and St. Gerasimos, Leichhardt. With the passage of time more and more parishes were being established, and the pace accelerated with the arrival of the present head of our Church in 1975, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, so that by the year 2005, the (Continued on page 3)

(Continued from page 2) Greek Orthodox Archdiocese now has 31 Parish/ Communities in NSW. With the establishment of each Parish, a new Sunday School was soon formed, so that at present (2005) we have 62 Sunday Schools in Sydney and Wollongong, requiring about 100 teachers and their assistants. The aim of the Sunday School is to: a) teach the children the Orthodox Faith and how to live this faith in their daily life. b) encourage children to take part in the life of the Church attend Sunday Liturgy, confess their sins to the priest, take Holy Communion regularly, and study Christian books and periodicals, including the Bible. c) teach them how to develop an upright and strong character, and how to resist temptation and pressure from their peers to do things that do not agree with the will of God. To achieve the above the children take part in picnics with their Sunday School teachers, organise concerts, the older children are taken to camps for a few days every year, they attend Church on Sundays with their teachers, they play games before the lesson begins, they learn to sing Christian songs and Church hymns, and are guided in their behaviour towards their parents, their elders and their peers. Η ζωή μας γέμισε με όνειρα και σχέδια. ΛΥΧΝΟΣ πρέπει να ηγείται του Ελληνισμού και όχι η Ομοσπονδία. Μας απεκάλεσαν διάφορα υβριστικά ονόματα και μας έδιωξαν από το χώλ της Αγίας Σοφίας που γινόταν οι εβδομαδιαίες συγκεντρώσεις μας. Μας δέχθηκε η αγγλικανική εκκλησία St. Michael s, στο Albion Street, όπου παραμείναμε μέχρι το 1966, απ όπου μεταφερθήκαμε στο κτίριο της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής, που μόλις είχε αγορασθεί. Από το 1976, η Ένωση στεγάζεται στο κτίριο του βιβλιοπωλείου της, στο 31Α Enmore Road, Newtown. Η πρώτη Χριστιανική Νεανική Ομάδα του Σύδνεϋ το 1961. Ομαδάρχης (στη μέση) είναι ο κος Σταμάτης Παπαναστασίου, νυν π. Στέφανος Παντανασσιώτης Η διάδοση του θείου λόγου προχωρεί με πολύ επιτυχία. Ακολουθεί η ίδρυση Κατηχητικών Σχολείων, επισκέψεις συμπατριωτών στα νοσοκομεία, δανειστική βιβλιοθήκη, ομάδες για μεγαλύτερα παιδιά, εξορμήσεις στα ελληνικά σπίτια στο Paddington και στο Redfern, για τόνωση του χριστιανικού φρονήματος και δωρεάν βιβλία και περιοδικά. Ιδρύεται η λεγομένη «Ομοσπονδία Ελληνικών Κοινοτήτων», εν αγνοία και ερήμην της Εκκλησίας! Κανείς δεν αντιδρά! Τουλάχιστον μισά από τα μέλη της Ενώσεως έχουν γεννηθεί εδώ. Το σύνθημα και ο σκοπός μας είναι η καλλιέργεια της χριστιανικής ζωής και η ιεραποστολή. Πνευματικές συγκεντρώσεις κάθε Σάββατο, Κύκλος μελέτης Αγίας Γραφής κάθε δεύτερη Δευτέρα, Εξορμήσεις σε πόλεις στο εσωτερικό της Αυστραλίας, προς τόνωση των συμπατριωτών μας, κατασκηνώσεις για νέους και μεγαλυτέρους, κατασκηνώσεις για μεγάλα παιδιά των Κατηχητικών Σχολείων, έκδοση νεανικού περιοδικού «Ο Λύχνος». Τα μέλη της Χριστιανικής Ενώσεως λαμβάνουν μέρος στην Εθνική παρέλαση προς το Sydney Opera House His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos hands out icons to the children at the Annual Sunday School Picnic. ανεδείχθησαν 5 Ιερείς που υπηρετούν στην Αυστραλία, 3 που υπηρετούν στην Ελλάδα και 7 μοναχοί που βρίσκονται στο Άγιο Όρος. Επίσης πολλοί επιστήμονες, επαγγελματίες και πλήθος νέων ζευγαριών με χαρούμενες οικογένειες. Περιγράφοντας τις παραπάνω δραστηριότητες της Ενώσεως, αισθανόμαστε υπόχρεοι να αναφέρουμε ότι τίποτε δεν θα ήταν δυνατόν χωρίς την συμπαράσταση και πνευματική κατεύθυνση των μακαριστών Ιεραρχών της Εκκλησίας, κ.κ. Θεοφυλάκτου και κ.κ. Ιεζεκιήλ. Ιδιαίτερη όμως είναι η αναγνώριση και ευγνωμοσύνη μας προς τον Σεβασμιώτατον Ποιμενάρχη μας, κ.κ. Στυλιανόν, του οποίου η βοήθεια και αγάπη δια το έργο της Ενώσεως και δια τα μέλη της είναι και πηγαία και ουσιαστική. Ναι, του οφείλουμε ευγνωμοσύνη και τον παρακαλούμε να μας ανέχεται, να μας συμβουλεύει και να μας κατευθύνει. Όσο για μας, υποσχώμεθα να συνεχίσουμε να αγωνιζόμεθα για τα δίκαια και το έργο της Εκκλησίας και της Αρχιεπισκοπής μας στο τόπο τούτο. Με την ευλογία του Σεβασμιωτάτου Αρχιεπισκόπου μας και κατά άκρα οικονομία, 4 μέλη της Ενώσεως κηρύττουν τον λόγο του Θεού απ άμβωνος στους Ιερούς Ναούς του Σύδνεϋ. Μέχρι στιγμής από τους κόλπους της Ενώσεως Τέλος, ευχαριστούμε με ευγνωμοσύνη τον Κύριο, που μας στήριξε όλα αυτά τα χρόνια, και τα λίγα έργα που κάναμε του τα προσφέρουμε με άκρα ταπείνωση, ώστε Εκείνος να τα αγιάσει προς δόξα του Ονόματός Του και της Εκκλησίας Του. (Continued from page 3) When the children reach the age of about 14 years, they are invited to become members of the groups for older children, called Ομάδες (Omathes), where they are treated as young men or young women, with the leader playing the role of an older brother, and whose example and advice they are expected to follow. After graduating from High School they can join the Greek Orthodox Christian Society, where they take part in its numerous and important missionary activities and where they themselves can become Sunday School teachers; in a way repaying God for what they themselves had enjoyed in their childhood years. The Sunday School teachers are young men and women of our Church, who sacrifice their time and exert great effort in teaching the children the will of God and the content of our Faith. We ask for your prayers that God makes teachers available for this important mission and that all parents recognise the need to send their children to Sunday School!
