JANUARY APRIL 2015 PUBLICATION DORMITION Of the virgin mary Greek Orthodox Church 29 Central St., Somerville, MA, 02143 Tel.( 617) 625-2222 Fax (617) 628-4529 Starting with Forgiveness Vespers on Sunday the 22 nd of February, we entered the blessed season of Great Lent. The Church Fathers call this period the Stadium of Virtues, paralleling it to a Stadium where an athlete labors to win the prize. This contest in which we are invited to take part, is heightening, it conveys our soul and spirit from the earthly to the heavenly. It makes a reality of Christ s promise to those who will be worthy to hear His words: Come you blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom.. Great Lent is the fight of repentance, our effort to cleanse ourselves from sin, passions and weaknesses that distance us from Christ and prevent us from joining Him in the Resurrection. Our Lord did not try to attract His followers by promising wealth, earthly glory, or happiness here below. On the contrary, He told them clearly what they were expected to give up and to suffer, if they wished to follow Him: If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. Compare this with other kinds of ministers and priests who give generic, feel-good sermons, promising an easy salvation and a place in Paradise conquered without any effort. On the contrary the Orthodox Church, following Christ s teachings closely and having a practical experience for two thousand years indicates to us the true methods of salvation. These are, of course, fasting, attendance at Lenten services, restricting the senses FOLLOWING CHRIST especially the eyes and cultivating a repentant spirit. Christ died on the Cross so that man lives. Then He was resurrected in order to guide man to a new life. As a great modern theologian once said, man condemned God to death, while God condemned man to immortality through His great love. Christ keeps loving all of us, friends and enemies alike. Let us then prepare ourselves in order to experience spiritually the great mystery of God s ascension to the Cross. Let us remember that we have lived most of our lives like the raging sea which cannot rest, laden down with our own attitudes, opinions, judgmental thoughts, complaints, and lack of love for others. Let us then stand humbly in the shadow of the Cross realizing that the only way to endure whatever afflictions, tribulations and humiliations come to us is by raising our cross in life faithfully and patiently. ΑΚΟΛΟΥΘΩΝΤΑΣ ΤΟΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΟ Με τον Εσπερινό της Μετανοίας της Κυριακής 22 Φεβρουαρίου, μπήκαμε στην ευλογημένη περίοδο της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής, σ αυτήν που οι Πατέρες αποκαλούν το «στάδιον των αρετών». Με αυτή τη φράση παρομοιάζουν τις σαράντα αυτές μέρες που οδηγούν στη Μεγάλη και Αγία Εβδομάδα με τα αγωνιστικά αθλήματα στα οποία συμμετέχει ένας αθλητής στο στάδιο. Ο δύσκολος αυτός αγώνας γιά την απόκτηση των αρετών στον οποίο καλούμαστε να συμμετάσχουμε είναι «υψοποιός», δηλαδή μας ανεβάζει ψηλά, στα επουράνια. Σ αυτά που μας υποσχέθηκε ο Χριστός ότι θα γίνουν πραγματικότητα, όταν αξιωθούμε ν ακούσουμε και μεις τα χαροποιά λόγια: «Δεύτε οι ευλογημένοι του Πατρός μου, κληρονομήσατε την Βασιλεία των Ουρανών...» (Ματθ. 25:34). Η Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή είναι ο αγώνας της μετανοίας, ο αγώνας μας να καθαριστούμε από τις αμαρτίες, τα πάθη και τις αδυναμίες που μας χωρίζουν από τον Χριστό και μας εμποδίζουν να Τον συναντήσουμε στην Ανάσταση. Ο Χριστός δεν κάλεσε τους μαθητάς Του υποσχόμενος ανθρώπινη ευτυχία, πλούτο ή δόξα. Αντίθετα τους είπε ότι θα πρέπει να απαρνηθούν αυτό τον κόσμο και να υποφέρουν, αν επιθυμούν να Τον ακολουθήσουν. Είπε ξεκάθαρα: «Εαν θέλει κανείς να με ακολουθήσει, να απαρνηθεί τον εαυτό του, να σηκώσει τον σταυρό του και να έρθει από πίσω μου». Καποιοι ιεροκήρυκες σήμερα υπόσχοντα από τηλεοράσεως μιά εύκολη σωτηρία και έναν παράδεισο που κατακτάται με μηδέν προσπάθεια από μέρους μας. Η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία αντίθετα, ακολουθώντας πιστά τα λόγια του Κυρίου και έχοντας μιά πρακτική εμπειρία δύο χιλιάδων χρόνων, μας υποδεικνύει τα μέσα της σωτηρίας. Αυτά περιλαμβάνουν την νηστεία, την πιστή συμμετοχή μας στις κατανυκτικές ακολουθίες της Σαρακοστής, την χαλιναγώγηση των αισθήσεων μας και ιδιαίτερα των οφθαλμών, και την καλλιέργεια πνεύματος ταπεινώσεως. Ο Χριστός πέθανε πάνω στο Σταυρό γιά να ζήσει ο άνθρωπος και αναστήθηκε στη συνέχεια γιά να οδηγήσει τον άνθρωπο σε μιά νέα ζωή. Και όπως λέει ένας σύγχρονος θεολόγος ο άνθρωπος κατεδίκασε τον Θεό σε θάνατο, ενώ ο Θεός κατεδίκασε τον άνθρωπο σε αθανασία με την μεγάλη Του αγάπη. Ο Χριστός εξακολουθεί να μας αγαπάει όλους, εχθρούς και φίλους. Ας προετοιμασθούμε λοιπόν ξανά για να βιώσουμε πνευματικά το μυστήριο της ανόδου του Θεού πάνω στον Σταυρό. Ας θυμηθούμε ότι περάσαμε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ζωής μας μοιάζοντας στη τρικυμισμένη θάλασσα που δεν ησυχάζει, φορτωμένοι με τα βιώματα μας, τις απόψεις μας, τις κριτικές στους άλλους, και την έλλειψη αγάπης γιά τον διπλανό μας. Και ας σταθούμε ταπεινά κάτω από τη σκιά του Εσταυρωμένου Κυρίου, συνειδητοποιόντας ότι ο μόνος τρόπος γιά να αντιμετωπίζουμε τις αντιξοότητες και τους πειρασμούς αυτής της ζωής είναι να σηκώνουμε με πίστη και καρτερία τον δικό μας καθημερινό σταυρό. A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT My dearest parishioners, Πολυαγαπημένοι μου ενορίτες, I would like to congratulate Nick Boulas, Guy Bressette, Andy Galbadis, Nikos Sfikas, and Peter Tsourianis for their re-election to the Parish Council; welcome the newly elected members Peter Menounos and Kostas Terzidis and to thank them all for their commitment. I would also like to congratulate our newly elected executive council members: Andy Galbadis, our first vice president; Guy Bressette, our second vice president; Themis Caulfield (Cookie), our treasurer; Taso Dres, our assistant treasurer; And Diane Karavitis, our secretary. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to two non re-elected members, Phill Dres and Teddy Menounos. Phil Dres is one of the few parishioners who has served in the parish council for 20 years. He has held the position of president, vice president, and treasurer. He has been an active member of many ministries and for many years had a leading role preparing food for many of our events, especially the festival. Teddy has served as the parish council president for several years and has led our church successfully. He has been in charge of managing the hall rentals and successfully increasing its revenue. He envisioned the 95 th anniversary, which was very successful. Personally and on behalf of the community thank you, Phill and Teddy, for your commitment, service, love and contribution to our beloved church. The Strategic Planning Ministry has been formed and consists of Father Konstantinos, Bill Galatis, Steve Kalivas, Nikos Sarantopoulos, Narge Sparages, Kostas Terzidis, Jack Toulopoulos and myself. A very productive first meeting took place on Wednesday January 7 th. Three more meetings have been planned for the next few months and upon their conclusion the ministry will present its recommendation to the parish council. Our parish council has plan several events for the next few months: celebrating March 25 th at Somerville city hall, Greek Independence Day Bakaliaro Dinner, Palm Sunday Fish Dinner, Gyro Day, Parishioner of the Year, and our Community Luncheon. Please support all the events the parish council and all organizations hold. Your participation and support is very crucial to their success. Thank you all for your love, commitment, support, and contributions. Ο Φίλλιπας Ντρε είναι ένας από τους λίγους ενορίτες που έχουν υπηρετήσει στο Συμβουλίο τηε ενορίας για 20 χρόνια. Διετέλεσε στη θέση του Προέδρου, Αντιπροέδρου και Ταμία. Υπήρξε ενεργό μέλος πολλών διακονιών για πολλά χρόνια είχε ηγετικό ρόλο στην προετοιμασία των φαγητών για πολλές από τις εκδηλώσεις μας, και ειδικά το φεστιβάλ. Ο Θεόδωρος ήταν πρόεδρος του συμβουλίου της ενορίας για πολλά χρόνια και έχει καθοδηγήσει την εκκλησία μας με επιτυχία. Έχει διατελέσει υπεύθυνος για τη διαχείριση των αιθουσών ενοικιάσεων και είχε επιτυχία στην αύξηση των εσόδων. Οραματίστηκε τον εορτασμό της 95η επετείου, o οποίος ήταν πολύ επιτυχής. Προσωπικά και εκ μέρους της κοινότητας σας ευχαριστώ για την αφοσιωσή σας, την υπηρεσία, την αγάπη και τη συνεισφορά σας στην αγαπημένη μας εκκλησία. Εχει αρχίσει τις εργασίες της η Διακονία Στρατηγικού Προγραμματισμού που αποτελείται από τον Πατέρα Κωνσταντίνο, Bill Γαλάτη, Steve Καλύβα, Νίκο Σαραντόπουλο, Ανάργυρο Σπαράγγη, Κώστα Τερζίδη, Τζακ Τουλόπουλο και εμένα. Η πρώτη συνάντηση πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τετάρτη 7 Ιανουαρίου και ήταν πολύ παραγωγική. Τρεις περισσότερες συνεδριάσεις έχουν προγραμματιστεί για τους επόμενους μήνες και μετά την ολοκλήρωση τους, η διακονία θα παρουσιάσει τις προτάσεις της στο Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο. Το Συμβούλιο μας έχει προγραμματίσει πολλές εκδηλώσεις για τους προσεχείς μήνες: Εορτασμό της 25ης Μαρτίου στο δημαρχείο του Somerville, παραδοσιακό γεύμα Μπακαλιάρου κατά τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου και την Κυριακή των Βαΐων, ημέρα Γύρου, γεύμα προς τιμήν του Ενορίτη της χρονιάς, και το ετήσιο Κοινοτικό γεύμα. Παρακαλούμε να υποστηρίξετε τις εκδηλώσεις τις οποίες οργανώνουν το κοινοτικό συμβούλιο και όλες οι οργανώσεις. Η συμμετοχή και υποστήριξη σας είναι πολύ κρίσιμη για την επιτυχία τους. CONCERNING THE ANNUNCIATION The Holy Bible informs us that the Angel who appeared to the Virgin Mary on the day of the Annunciation addressed Her as "full of Grace", telling Her that the Lord is with Her; that She is "blessed among women" and that She has "found favour with God". (Luke 1:28 30). She is also informed that the Holy Spirit will descend upon Her and that She will be overshadowed by the power of the Lord on high; that She will bear a Son, Who shall be great and shall be called "Son of God" and that «He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end» (Luke 1:33). The same Evangelist mentions that as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, «...the babyleaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed» (Luke 1:41 48). These words of the Holy Bible bestow immense honour to the Virgin Mary. God Himself characterizes Her as "full of Grace"; Elizabeth guided by the Holy Spirit addresses Her as "blessed among women" and "the Mother of my Lord"; John the Baptist while still in the womb of his mother Elizabeth leaps for joy at the visit of the Theotokos; the Virgin Mary Herself glorifies the Lord and prophesies that She will be glorified and be called "blessed" by all the generations of mankind. "So, if Christ is the Saviour, why do you bestow such honour to the Virgin Mary?" we are asked by some christians who follow other denominations. This is not difficult for one to understand. The renewal of the bonds with God, the renovation of mankind's nature by the divine nature of Christ, and the partaking of human nature in divine life, were realized with the incarnation of Christ inside the womb of the Virgin Mary. Whatever honour we people might bestow on the Virgin Mary will never reach the honour bestowed on Her by God Himself: to acquire flesh within Her womb, and render Her the "Theotokos" (=who gave birth to God). Faith in the God human status of Christ obliges us to also honour the instrument of His incarnation, that is, the Theotokos. If we do not do this, how can we possibly believe in a God human Jesus? But the Holy Bible itself as we have seen also testifies about this honour. The Virgin Mary perceives this honour as something self understood, and ascribes it to the Godman Jesus Who was born of Her (Luke 1:48): «...He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed». We therefore honour the Virgin Mary because She was first honoured by Christ Himself, and because this is a command of the Holy Bible. Naturally, we believe that the Virgin Mary is not the source per se of salvation; Christ is our Redeemer. Christ assumed human nature and He healed it, and He became for mankind the «new Adam», or «new root». But this root sprouted inside the womb of the Virgin Mary. That was the reason Saint John the Chrysostom called the feast day of the Annunciation of the Theotokos «the feast of the root». The Holy Mother, therefore, became the cause for human nature to partake of the divine life the bridge that reconnected man and all of Creation with the Trinitarian God because all three Persons of the Holy Trinity participated in Christ's Incarnation: the Son Who was sent by God the Father acquired flesh, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit inside the body of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is the «Bridge» that linked heaven to earth, and recalled all of Creation back to the bosom of God's love. That is why the Birth of Christ by the Virgin Mary is not celebrated by mankind only, but by all of Creation: the heavens and the stars, angels and mankind, the earth and the cave, the Magi and the shepherds... everyone rejoices with the event of the renewal of the betrothal of the celestial Bridegroom to the Church. It suffices to observe an icon of the Nativity to become aware that with Christ's Birth, all of Creation is transformed. As such, the honoring of the Virgin Mary is always linked to the Person of Christ. In other words, She is always honored as «Mother of the Lord» (Luke 1:43), Who was for Her also «God and Saviour» (Luke 1:47). It is for this reason that the Orthodox Church teaches that the Virgin Mary is not exempt of the ancestral sin. She too had inherited the sinful nature of Adam, except that She was exempt of personal sins, because She was the «chosen vessel» and «full of Grace». The Virgin Mary was therefore a genuine child of this world a world groaning within sin which is why She represents it in its entirety, and can restore its communion with the Saviour of the world, Who took on flesh inside Her. And that is why our Church offers Her the following, exquisite hymn: «More precious than the Cherubim, and more glorious incomparably than the Seraphim, Thou, who incorruptibly gave birth to God the Logos Thou, the truly Theotokos we magnify Thee».An Orthodox Handbook by +Fr. Ο ευαγγελισμος της θεοτοκου Ο Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου είναι η αρχή όλων των δεσποτικών εορτών, η απαρχή μιας σειράς ιστορικών γεγονότων από τα οποία προήλθε η σωτηρία του ανθρώπινου γένους. Γι αυτό και στο απολυτίκιο της εορτής ψάλλουμε: «Σήμερον της σωτηρίας ημών το κεφάλαιον και του απ' αιώνος μυστηρίου η φανέρωσις». Το περιεχόμενο της γιορτής αναφέρεται στο γεγονός κατά το οποίο ο αρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ με τον οποίο συνδέονται όλα τα γεγονότα που έχουν σχέση με την ενανθρώπηση του Χριστού επισκέφθηκε με εντολή του Θεού την Παναγία και την πληροφόρησε ότι έφθασε ο καιρός της σαρκώσεως Του Λόγου του θεού και ότι αυτή θα γίνει η μητέρα του. Περί της Παναγίας Θεοτόκου ομίλησαν και έγραψαν πολλοί Πατέρες και Υμνωδοί της Εκκλησίας του Χριστού. Και έτσι ασφαλώς έπρεπε να γίνει διότι εις την Ορθόδοξον εκκλησίαν ζει αληθώς μία διαρκής περί Παναγίας Θεοτόκου παράδοσις, επί κεφαλής της οποίας ίσταται ως τελετάρχης ο «Αγγελος Πρωτοστάτης» ο οποίος εκ της Παναγίας Τριάδος «ουρανόθεν επέμφθη ειπείν τη Θεοτόκω το Χαίρε». Το Χαίρε αυτό, που συνοψίζει ολόκληρο το χαρμόσυνο άγγελμα (ευ αγγέλιο) της ελεύσεως του Σωτήρος Χριστού, έγινε εις την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία παντοτεινή παράδοσις, όπως ακριβώς το προεφήτευσεν η Παναγία Θεοτόκος: «ιδού γαρ από του νυν μακαριούσι με πάσαι αι γενεαί» (Λουκ. 1:48). Ο Οσιος Νικόλαος ο Καβάσιλας περιγράφει την Παρθένο σαν τον καρπό των κτισμάτων. Οπως το δέντρο υπάρχει γιά τον καρπό, έτσι και η κτίση υπάρχει γιά την Παρθένο και η Παρθένος γιά τον Χριστό. Η Παρθένος είναι το τέλος στο οποίο αναφέρονται τα πάντα. Η Μαρία είναι η σεμνότης, η χάρις και ο «κόσμος των όντων» (στολίδι) και γι αυτό όταν ο Θεός στην αρχή των αιώνων ατενίζοντας τα δημιουργήματά Του, είπε ότι είνα «καλά λίαν» ουσιαστικά έβλεπε μπροστά Του τον καρπό όλης της δημιουργίας, την Παρθένο, και ο έπαινός Του ήταν στην πραγματικότητα «ευφημία της Παρθένου». Το βαθύτερο μεγαλείο της Παρθένου έγκειται στο ότι πραγματοποίησε ακριβώς το σκοπό γιά τον οποίο δημιουργήθηκε ο άνθρωπος και από τον οποίο εξέπεσαν οι Πρωτόπλαστοι πως με την καθαρότητα και την προς το Θεό αγάπη της, φανέρωσε καθαρό και ακέραιο τον άνθρωπο «όπως είχε πλαστεί από την αρχή και όπως έπρεπε να παραμείνει». Ο σύγχρονος άνθρωπος αισθάνεται ρίγος όταν συνειδητοποιεί ότι η Αγάπη του Θεού γιά τον άνθρωπο δεν είναι απλός οίκτος ή ελεημοσύνη, αλλά «φιλανθρωπία», αληθινή δηλαδή και πραγματική φιλία (Ιω. 15:14). Ο Θεός έδωσε πράγματι στην Παρθένο καρπό των κτισμάτων να γίνει αυτή προσωπικά και μέσα σ αυτήν η ανθρώπινη φύση «θεοτόκος». Την απόλυτη αυτή αλήθεια δεν μπορεί να την ανατρέψει καμιά αίρεση του ανθρωποκεντρικού ουμανισμού του ΙΔ και του Κ αιώνα. Μέσα στους αιώνες βρέθηκαν αρκετοί άθεοι που υποστήριξαν ότι ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να γίνει Θεός. Κανείς όμως ποτέ, εκτός από τους Ορθοδόξους Πατέρες, δεν τόλμησε να υποστηρίξει ότι ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να γεννήσει τον Θεό. Κι όμως αυτό το μεγάλο παράδοξο ευδόκησε ο Θεός να αποτελεί την μεγάλη αξία αλλά και την ύψιστη ευγένεια της ανθρώπινης φύσεως. Η αξία της Παρθένου βρίσκεται ακριβώς στο ότι πραγματοποίησε αυτό το σκοπό. Και τον πραγματοποίησε λέγοντας «ιδού η δούλη Κυρίου». Γιατί το αληθινό μεγαλείο του ανθρώπου έγκειται ακριβώς στο να πραγματοποιεί τον ύψιστο προορισμό που του έδωσε ο Θεός και να έχει ταυτόχρονα τη συνείδηση ότι «δούλος αχρείος εστι» (Λουκ. 17:18). Ο Αγιος Νικόδημος ο Αγιορείτης, μιλώντας για τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου, προχωρεί και σε μια προσωπική και υπαρξιακή προσέγγιση του γεγονότος αυτού. Δεν αρκεί μόνον μας λέει να εορτάζουμε εξωτερικά τα γεγονότα της θείας ενανθρωπήσεως, αλλά να τα πλησιάζουμε υπαρξιακά και πνευματικά. Είναι χαρακτηριστικός ο λόγος του Προφήτη Ησαϊα : «Ενεκα του φόβου σου Κύριε, εν γαστρί συνελάβομεν και ωδινήσαμεν και ετέκομεν» (Ησ. 26:18). Σύμφωνα με την ερμηνεία των Αγίων Πατέρων, σπόρος είναι ο λόγος του Θεού, και μήτρα είναι ο νούς και η καρδιά του ανθρώπου. Με την πίστη ο λόγος του Θεού σπείρεται στην καρδιά του ανθρώπου και την καθιστά έγκυο από το φόβο του Θεού. Πρόκειται για το φόβο να μη μείνει ο άνθρωπος μακριά από το Θεό. Με το φόβο αυτό αρχίζει ο αγώνας για την κάθαρση της καρδιάς για την απόκτηση των αρετών, που μοιάζει με πόνο, ωδίνες, τοκετού. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο γεννιέται το πνεύμα της σωτηρίας μας που είναι η θέωση και ο αγιασμός. Η μόρφωση του Χριστού μέσα μας γίνεται με πνευματικές ωδίνες. Ο Απόστολος Παύλος λέει: «Τεκνία μου, ους πάλιν ωδίνω, άχρις ού μορφωθεί ο χριστός εν υμίν». Ωδίνες είναι ο ασκητικός αγώνας, και μόρφωση είναι η θέωση και ο αγιασμός. Κατά τους Αγίους Πατέρας αυτό που συνέβη σωματικά στην Παναγία, αυτό γίνεται πνευματικά και σε κάθε έναν του οποίου η ψυχή παρθενεύει, δηλαδή καθαρίζεται από τα πάθη. Ο Χριστός, που μια φορά γεννήθηκε κατά σάρκα, θέλει να γεννιέται πάντα κατά πνεύμα, από αυτούς που τον αποδέχονται, και έτσι γίνεται βρέφος, διαπλάττοντας τον εαυτό του μέσα σε εκείνους διά των αρετών. Γι αυτό ας αναφωνήσουμε και εμείς μαζί με τον θεσπέσιο Γαβριήλ: «Χαίρε κεχαριτωμένη ο Κύριος μετά σου, ευλογημένη συ εν γυναιξί και ευλογημένος ο καρπός της κοιλίας σου».

On Saturday, February 21, 2015, Boston Lykeion held an Aprokriatiko Dance in our Social Center. A great time was had by all who attended the event despite the snow storm. ΤΙ ΕΝΑΙ ΟΙ ΑΠΟΚΡΙΕΣ Απόκριες ονομάζονται οι τρεις εβδομάδες πριν από τη Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή καί ταυτίζονται με την περίοδο του Τριωδίου, μια κινητή περίοδο στην Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική παράδοση από την Κυριακή του Τελώνου και του Φαρισαίου μέχρι την Κυριακή της Τυροφάγου ή Τυρινής. Η πρώτη εβδομάδα των Αποκριών που τελειώνει την Κυριακή του Ασώτου, λέγεται και Προφωνή, επειδή παλιά προφωνούσαν, δηλαδή διαλαλούσαν ότι άρχιζαν οι Απόκριες. Η δεύτερη εβδομάδα λέγεται Κρεατινή ή της Κρεοφάγου, επειδή έτρωγαν κρέας και δεν νήστευαν ούτε την Τετάρτη ή την Παρασκευή. Η εβδομάδα αυτή γιορτάζεται με γλέντια και φαγοπότια χωρίς κανένα θρησκευτικό περιορισμό. Η Κυριακή της εβδομάδας αυτής, η Κυριακή της Απόκρεω -και συνεκδοχικά ολόκληρη η περίοδος από την είσοδο του Τριωδίου μέχρι την Καθαρά Δευτέρα- ονομάστηκε έτσι, επειδή συνηθίζεται να μην τρώνε κρέας οι Χριστιανοί, δηλαδή «να απέχουν από το κρέας». Η τρίτη εβδομάδα λέγεται Τυρινή ή της Τυροφάγου, επειδή έτρωγαν γαλακτοκομικά προϊόντα σαν ενδιάμεση κατάσταση μεταξύ κρεοφαγίας και νηστείας, για να προετοιμαστούν σιγά - σιγά για τη νηστεία της Σαρακοστή. Ανάλογη με την ελληνική λέξη Αποκριά είναι και η λατινική λέξη Καρναβάλι (Carneval, Carnevale, από τις λέξεις Carne=κρέας και Vale=περνάει)

GREEK SCHOOL SUNDAY SCHOOL Our Greek school had the Christmas celebration on December 14th. Santa gave out presents, our children moved the audience with songs, poems, and their dances. Our school is progressing!! Our Greek school program every year, becomes even better. The children give their best, as do their teachers. But it is not enough. Our school must grow even more. With such a large church community, with all of its members, it is sad that we have so little children. Please, help to advertise us! Bring your children, grandchildren, and friends so that all together, we can build a strong Greek foundation in the hearts of the children! REMEMBER: The future belongs to the children!! Ολόκληρη κοινότητα, με τόσα μέλη, είναι λυπηρό να έχουμε τόσους λίγους μαθητές. Σας παρακαλούμε, διαφημίστε μας! Φέρετε τα παιδιά, τα εγγόνια, τους φίλους. Ελάτε, ΟΛΟΙ ΜΑΖΙ, να χτίσουμε γερά την ελληνική μόρφωση στίς καρδιές των παιδιών! ΜΗΝ ΞΕΧΝΑΤΕ: Το αύριο ανήκει στα παιδιά!! Great Lenten season to all our Dormition families! Many thanks to the families and children who helped to decorate the tree and upper hall. Thank you to all the children who participated in our annual Christmas pageant. This event always helps us to remember the reason for the season. Please send your children to Sunday School each Sunday. Not only do they learn about our Orthodox faith, they also form friendships and learn to perform acts of kindness towards others. May the Easter season help to guide our children towards the importance of attending liturgy on Sundays. Our Sunday School is always in need of volunteers. Please consider helping out on Sundays. Contact the church office or speak with me on Sunday if interested. Κατηχητικό Σχολείο Καλή Σαρακοστή σε όλες τις οικογένειες της Κοιμήσεως μας! Με το τροπο αυτο θυμόμαστε καλητερα τι γιορτασομε. Παρακαλούμε να στελνετε τα παιδιά σας στο Κατηχητικό Σχολείο κάθε Κυριακή. Όχι μόνο μαθαίνουν για την Ορθόδοξη πίστη μας, αλλά δημημιουργουν φιλίες και μαθένουν να κανουν πράξεις καλοσύνης προς τους άλλους. Greetings from the PTO. We want to congratulate the newly elected parish councilors. We wish them all the best. We are one year away from our Church s 100 th Anniversary. Can you believe it? Are you getting excited? During the winter, the PTO held several events for our families. On November 29, 2014, the children from our Joy, Hope & GOYA programs decorated the Christmas tree, our community halls and our Church. Afterwards the children enjoyed viewing Disney s Frozen. Many children watched the movie comfortably on their own bean bags. On December 14, 2014, the Greek School Christmas Program took place in the upper hall. The Greek school children recited their beautiful Christmas poems and carols. Santa Claus came afterwards to visit our beloved children. On December 24, 2014 the PTO held its annual Christmas Pageant. Our Sunday and Greek School students performed, for the parishioners in attendance, after the Church service in new costumes and a set design. On December 28, 2014 the PTO held its annual Holiday Communion breakfast in the upper hall. All of our Dormition families enjoyed the brunch which was blessed by Father Konstantinos. The PTO Committee would like to recognize and thank immensely Vangelis Kechris, the Parish Council President, Stelios Sfikas, Dan Kourafalos, Kate Ferrari, Diane Karavitis, Evelyn Galatis, Mr. & Mrs. Stefanou, Mr. & Mrs. Ververis, Ann Moulakis and her husband James, Theodore Menounos, & Taso Dres for their respective donations, and assistance with preparing, and volunteering for the breakfast. All the leftover food items were then delivered and shared with the poor and the needy at the Somerville Homeless Coalition Shelter on College Avenue in Somerville, MA. The PTO Committee reminds parents of our following and upcoming PTO and Church events. On Saturday, March 21, 2015, we encourage everyone to attend the Greek Independence Day Celebration at the Somerville City Hall. This event is held especially for our community by the Mayor. On Sunday, March 22, 2015, after liturgy, the Greek School children will recite their Greek poems to celebrate Greek Independence Day. Don t forget to wear your traditional Greek costume or wear blue and white clothing. Display your Greek Pride. On Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. we invite everyone for dinner and GLOW bowling at Ryan Family Amusements located at 11 Charles Street, Malden, MA for only $10.00 per person. The price includes 2 strings of bowling, shoes, dinner and desert. All families are guaranteed to have fun. What s your bowling average? We encourage you to participate and attend. On Sunday, April 12, 2015, after the Agape Service, the PTO will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt for all the children. Who will find the golden egg this year? The PTO encourages all families to attend and worship together these beautiful Church services with Father Konstantinos. In April or May of 2015 we intend to either visit our senior citizens at the Hellenic Women s and Benevolent Association in Canton, MA or visit the residents at the Philoxenia House in Brookline, MA. Details to be announced soon. Will you join us? On May 2, 2015, the PTO will hold its annual bake sale fundraiser. We request that parents and grandparents, as well as local establishments, consider donating a baked good for our sale. Please support our children. As always the PTO Committee seeks additional volunteers to execute and assist with our events for our children s enjoyment. Here we are again, celebrating the start of another year. Everything is new again. In the Church we bless new holy water and New Year s bread. Then there is the Baptism of Christ, a new beginning even for Him. Many of us want to wipe the slate clean so to speak, and start anew. I also look to the New Year as an opportunity to do the same. As a musician I m always reinventing myself. It comes with the territory. Am I being current in my teaching and/or relating to my students, etc. Is there anything new I can do to shake things up for the better? And this is the approach I try to take with the Choir. We ve had some important changes over the time I ve been here. People have gone but people have come, some are on a hiatus until the time is better for them to make the commitment, some have gotten sick as we pray for them to get better and join us again. So reinventing the Choir is front and center as we start a new year. We re a small group but a mighty group. And multi talented! So we have options no matter what our size. One of my New Year s resolutions is to once again extend the invitation to parishioners to join the Choir. We have some big feasts coming up. Epiphany is upon us. Then we start the preparation for Lent, enter into Lent, and finally end up at Easter. There is much wonderful music right around the corner. And the Church is also approaching its 100th anniversary in 2016 more celebrations to look forward to. Our small Choir is mighty as I ve said earlier, but we could use some help. Choirs are cyclical and in a state of constant change. This means that for some years we may have 20 people singing, then for the next few years, due to circumstances beyond our control, we may have 10 people, etc. So choirs are in it for the long haul. We can t give up or become negative about our situation. We have to reinvent ourselves. And that s how the New Year helps us! For anyone wanting to start a new chapter in their lives in 2015, think about joining the Dormition Choir. We rehearse most Thursdays at 7:15 pm, especially leading up to a major feast of the Church. Sometimes we rehearse after Sunday Liturgy instead. We sing every Sunday and for other special services (Christmas, Holy Week, Easter). It s a commitment and a very rewarding one indeed. Ολα είναι καινούργια. Στην εκκλησία, γιορτάζουμε τον αγιασμό των Υδάτων, την βασιλόπιτα, την Βάπτιση του Χριστού, μία νέα αρχή! Πολλοί από μας, κάνουμε μια νέα αρχή. Κι εγώ, ως μουσικός, ψάχνω πάντα για κάτι νέο. Αναρωτιέμαι, τι μπορώ να κάνω, κάτι άλλο, καινούργιο... Το ίδιο ισχύει και με την χορωδία. Είχαμε κάποιες σπουδαίες αλλαγές. Άνθρωποι έφυγαν, κι άλλοι, καινούργιοι, έρχονται. Άλλοι, περιμένουν την κατάλληλη στιγμή, άλλοι είναι άρρωστοι κι εμείς προσευχoμαστε γι αυτούς. Η χορωδία είναι η αρχή και το κέντρο του νέου έτους. Μικρή ομάδα, αλλά δυνατή. Ταλαντούχα! Με τη νέα χρονιά, στόχος μας είναι να προσελκύσουμε νέα μέλη στη χορωδία. Μπροστά μας έχουμε τα Θεοφάνεια. Μετά αρχίζει η Σαρακοστή, μετά, το Πάσχα. Η εκκλησία βαδίζει προς την εκατονταετηρίδα, το 2016! Η χορωδία, τη μιά χρονιά έχει 20 μέλη, την άλλη 10. Όμως, δεν πρέπει να απογοητευτούμε. Όποιος θέλει να αρχίσει κάτι νέο το 2015, ας έλθει στη χορωδία. Πρόβες, κάθε Πέμπτη, στις 7:15μ.μ.. Μερικές φορές, κάνουμε πρόβα την Κυριακή, μετά τη θ. λειτουργία. Ψάλλουμε κάθε Κυριακή, καθώς και σε ειδικές περιπτώσεις (Χριστούγεννα, Μεγ. Εβδομάδα, Πάσχα). Παρακαλώ, ελάτε να με βρείτε κατά την ώρα του καφέ, μετά την Κυριακάτικη θ. λειτουργία, ή, επικοινωνήστε μαζί μου, μέσω εκκλησίας. Το αγαπημένο μου θέμα, είναι η μουσική. Ελάτε να μιλήσουμε!
