The Feast of Pascha has filled our hearts with joy and gladness. Death no longer possesses its sting. A new path to life has been opened for all generations. This blessed Passover has redefined our existence and has given meaning to our beautiful yet sorrowful world. The events of this Feast of Feasts did not happen in a vacuum. In fact, they only begin to make sense within the context of the Old Testament. Through the book of Genesis, we understand that man was created in God s image and likeness, created with a both body and soul endowed with immortality. Man s disobedience led to his separation from God and from his neighbor, resulting in the separation between body and soul which we call death. While the introduction of death into the human reality was never God s intention, it was the gift that God bestowed on us so that our brokenness would not be an eternal one. Through the resurrection of Christ, God showed us our true destiny which was briefly revealed in the Garden of Eden, restored in the Empty Tomb, and realized in Christ s Ascension. In the book of Exodus, we witness the first Passover or Pascha. This book Mother s Day Luncheon Sunday, May 8th, 2016 Immediately following the Divine Liturgy

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. picks up when Genesis left off, with Jacob s family settling in Egypt and prospering. Yet the prosperity did not last long. Soon the descendants of Jacob found themselves oppressed as slaves to the cruelty of the Egyptian rulers. Four hundred years of oppression passed before God would send Moses to deliver them. Moses would not raise an army to free God s people. Rather, God sent through him a number of plagues onto Egypt, and the Egyptian people suffered so much that they demanded for the Hebrews to leave. As a final plague, God announced that all the first born of Egypt would die. Only those who followed His instructions to sprinkle their doorpost with the blood of a lamb would be saved. The Lord said: For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. (Exodus 12:12-13)The first Passover was literally the night during which those who were obedient to God through the sign of the blood of the Lamb, were passed over by the angels of death. For Christians, who have received in their hearts the blood of the Lamb of God who is the Christ, death passes over us and is no more. Surely we die and our soul and body separate themselves from each other. Yet, both our body and soul stay in communion with God, and are therefore alive. The relics of Saint Spyridon, a walking saint, is an example of this truth. In God s time, our transformed body and soul will be reconnected in the general resurrection and they, as one, will be in eternal communion with God as He intended. While the book of the Genesis shows us our true destiny, the book of Exodus shows us the method by which we can achieve it. After the Hebrews left Egypt following the first Passover, they walked through the Red Sea, a gift of baptism that opened their journey to the Promised Land. Before they arrived there, they sojourned the desert for forty years. In the desert they received the Ten Commandments and God revealed Himself to them and made a covenant with them. In the desert, they learned to be completely dependent on Him, to be nourished by Him, to quench their thirst by Him, to be healed by Him. Many waivered and wanted to return to the slavery of Egypt. Others endured through perseverance, patience, obedience, and much hardship, before they arrived to the Promised Land as a Holy Nation, a royal priesthood, a renewed people of God. Our whole life is the desert. We have no home here and we seek no comfort. We work for a better world but, in the end, there is only one goal: The Promised Land - the Kingdom of Heaven. The path to the Kingdom has been opened by the Lord s Pascha. Pascha does not lie at the end of the journey but at the beginning. After the first Pascha, the Hebrews were finally free to go home. They did not stay in Egypt but journeyed perilously toward their ancestral land. We too, after Pascha, we do not stand still. We struggle and journey toward the feast of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon us, the eternal presence of God within us. The gift of the Holy Spirit will cleanse us, and sanctify us, and prepare us to make the journey to our ancestral home: The Kingdom of Heaven. Amen. Indeed He is Risen! Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos 2 The Voice

In preparation for Easter, PTA had very busy this month. P.T.A. NEWS On April 2nd, our Parish hosted a Family Synaxis. Our Community Hall was filled with over 300 participants from across the Chicagoland area. I want to take a moment to thank my PTA board and our few parent volunteers who helped in organizing, preparing and serving the meals for this event. Your dedication and tireless hard work is greatly appreciated. There is A LOT of work that takes place behind the scenes before every event for our Greek School, Sunday School and Church that is sometimes is not realized by the participants and attendees. The more parent involvement we have, the more opportunities our PTA has to provide our School. Students took their Spring School Pictures on April 11th and 15th. Students were all camera ready on both days which helped the process run smoothly. We thank the parent volunteers who helped the classroom teachers on this day. On Saturday, April 22 we hosted the Saturday of Lazarus annual pancake breakfast and making of the palms. Many thanks to Jim Halikas for cooking his delicious fasting pancakes for all to enjoy. We wish to thank everyone who purchased PTA s Easter Candles. With your loving support, we were able to raise the funds for the PTA Scholarships. Dear Fellow Parishioners, Χριστός Ανέστη! We have reached Great Pascha after our Lenten Journey. We wish all our church families all the best that his Resurrection brings. April was a busy month. We celebrated the Stavroproskinisis with the procession in church and afterwards receiving the traditional flower. Upon coming into the hall we traditionally served our loukoumades to the congregation. April 5th we had a full hall with the Philoxenia Luncheon. The Seniors as usual loved seeing each other and catching up on news. It was a wonderful afternoon for all. The next luncheon will be at St. Nicholas on Bright Wednesday May 4th. If you plan to attend please call St. Nicholas with your reservations. On April 9th we attended the Quiltathon at Sts. Constantine and Helen. They will be distributing the quilts to various places and some of us plan to attend as we did last year. This is a very heartwarming experience. On April 13th and 14th we made tsourekia. On April 16th many attended the Eikona concert at St. Demetrios Elmhurst. The three sisters singing Liturgical and other music was phenomenal. We again hosted the reception for the presanctified service on Friday April 22. His Eminence was present and we had a great evening. The Saturday of Lazarus we stayed many hours to prepare for the Luncheon on Palm Sunday and the bake sale. Both were a great success and I thank those who helped and our donors. Many more eggs were dyed on Good Thursday this year since we had more orders than usual. The Philoptochos Metropolis has made a tradition of going to The St. Iakovos Retreat Center on Bright Friday Zoodohou Pigees. All are welcome to go. It is a great morning event. MOTHERS DAY and our annual Luncheon are on MAY 8th. Make your reservations early so that you are not left without a table. We wish all a pleasant May and the best to your families. See you in church. 14 The Voice
