Philippians 1:1 1 Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, 5 in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. 7 For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me. 8 For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 1:1 - σὺν ἐπισκόποις - Several witnesses, including B 3 D c K many minuscules it r arm Chrysostom Euthalius Cassiodorus Theophylact, read συνεπισκότοις ( fellowbishops ). This reading, which arose no doubt from dogmatic or ecclesiastical interests, is to be rejected 1 because (a) the construction would be imperfect, the συν- having no appropriate reference, and (b) the letter is obviously intended for the whole community (τοῖς ἁγίοις τοῖς οὖσιν ἐν Φιλίπποις (cf. 3.1; 4.1, and especially 15)). Philippians 1:9 UBS GREEK 9 καὶ τοῦτο προσεύχομαι, ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη ὑμῶν ἔτι μᾶλλον καὶ μᾶλλον περισσεύῃ ἐν ἐπιγνώσει καὶ πάσῃ αἰσθήσει, 10 εἰς τὸ δοκιμάζειν ὑμᾶς τὰ διαφέροντα, ἵνα ἦτε εἰλικρινεῖς καὶ ἀπρόσκοποι εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ, 11 πεπληρωμένοι καρπὸν δικαιοσύνης τὸν διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς δόξαν καὶ ἔπαινον θεοῦ.* 12 Γινώσκειν δὲ ὑμᾶς βούλομαι, ἀδελφοί, ὅτι τὰ κατ' ἐμὲ μᾶλλον εἰς προκοπὴν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ἐλήλυθεν, 13 ὥστε τοὺς δεσμούς μου φανεροὺς ἐν Χριστῷ γενέσθαι ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ πραιτωρίῳ καὶ τοῖς λοιποῖς πάσιν, καὶ τοὺς πλείονας τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἐν κυρίῳ πεποιθότας τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου περισσοτέρως τολμᾶν ἀφόβως τὸν λόγον λαλεῖν.* 15 Τινὲς μὲν καὶ διὰ φθόνον καὶ ἔριν, τινὲς δὲ καὶ δι' εὐδοκίαν τὸν Χριστὸν κηρύσσουσιν: NASB 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; 11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. 12 Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, 13 so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. 15 Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. 12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. 15 NKJV Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill: T-R 9 καὶ τοῦτο προσεύχομαι ἵνα ἡ ἀγάπη ὑμῶν ἔτι μᾶλλον καὶ μᾶλλον περισσεύῃ ἐν ἐπιγνώσει καὶ πάσῃ αἰσθήσει 10 εἰς τὸ δοκιμάζειν ὑμᾶς τὰ διαφέροντα ἵνα ἦτε εἰλικρινεῖς καὶ ἀπρόσκοποι εἰς ἡμέραν Χριστοῦ 11 πεπληρωμένοι καρπῶν δικαιοσύνης τῶν διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς δόξαν καὶ ἔπαινον θεοῦ.* 12 Γινώσκειν δὲ ὑμᾶς βούλομαι ἀδελφοί ὅτι τὰ κατ' ἐμὲ μᾶλλον εἰς προκοπὴν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ἐλήλυθεν 13 ὥστε τοὺς δεσμούς μου φανεροὺς ἐν Χριστῷ γενέσθαι ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ πραιτωρίῳ καὶ τοῖς λοιποῖς πάσιν καὶ τοὺς πλείονας τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἐν κυρίῳ πεποιθότας τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου περισσοτέρως τολμᾶν ἀφόβως τὸν λόγον λαλεῖν.* 15 Τινὲς μὲν καὶ διὰ φθόνον καὶ ἔριν τινὲς δὲ καὶ δι' εὐδοκίαν τὸν Χριστὸν κηρύσσουσιν 1:11 - καὶ ἔπαινον θεοῦ {A} - Although it is not easy to explain how such a wide variety of readings developed, there is little doubt that the original reading is καὶ ἔπαινον θεοῦ, which is supported by good representatives of several types of text, including the Alexandrian and the Western types ( A B D c I K P 33 81 6 1739 Byz Lect it ar, d, r vg syr p, h cop sa, bo, fay arm). Instead of θεοῦ, D gr* 1962 read Χριστοῦ (,=u= for ;=u), from which καὶ ἔπαινον αὐτοῦ (vg ms ) developed as a simplification of the redundancy of the two instances of Χριστοῦ. Very remarkable is the reading καὶ early conflate reading in p 46, θεοῦ καὶ ἔπαινον ἐμοἱ. 1: - λόγον λαλεῖν {B} - It must be acknowledged that, on the basis of weight and variety of external evidence, the reading λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ λαλεῖν seems to be preferable ( A B P 33 81 629 1241 it ar vg syr p, h with * cop sa, bo, fay goth arm eth Clement al). Because, however, the position and wording of the genitive modifiers (τοῦ θεοῦ and κυρίου) vary, a majority of the Committee preferred the reading λόγον λαλεῖν (p 46vid D c K 6 1739 it r syr h Marcion Chrysostom al) as that which best explains the origin of the other readings, which have the appearance of scribal expansions.

Although it is possible that the Adam-Christ typology implicit in the passage accounts for the substitution, it is more likely that the singular number is merely a non-doctrinal conformation to the singular δούλου and the following ἄνθρωπος. 2) It has sometimes been suggested that the fact that ver. 5 begins a lection would probably facilitate the dropping of γὰρ. How far such influence would make itself felt on non-lectionary manuscripts is debatable; in any case, however, A B C, all of which lack γὰρ, probably antedate the presumed date of the origin of the developed lectionary system.

While the article before ὄνομα may have been inserted in order to assimilate the expression to a more usual one, it is also possible that the last syllable of ἐχαρίσατο somehow led to the omission of the article. Faced with such a balance of possibilities, the Committee preferred to adopt the reading supported by p 46 B al. 2:11b - κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς {A} - Several witnesses, chiefly Western, omit Χριστὸς, perhaps in order to conform the expression to that in ver. 10. 2:12 - ὡς {A} - The omission of ὡς from B 33 42 234 618 1241 al is probably accidental, although copyists may have deliberately deleted it as superfluous; in any case, the presence of the word is strongly supported by p 46 and representatives of both the Alexandrian and the Western types of text ( A C D G K P 81 6 1739 Byz Lect).

Because of the conciseness of style, copyists added various explanatory words and phrases; e.g. the Textus Receptus reads τῷ αὐτῷ στοιχεῖν κανόνι, τὸ ἀυτὸ φρονεῖν with c K P 88 6 syr p, h eth pp al, where κανόνι serves to identify the otherwise enigmatic τῷ αὐτῷ, and τὸ ἀυτὸ φρονεῖν is a gloss explaining τῷ αὐτῷ στοιχεῖν (compare 2.2 and Ga 6.16); other witnesses insert κανόνι before στοιχεῖν (69 1908), and still others insert τὸ ἀυτὸ φρονεῖν before τῷ αὐτῷ, with or without κανόνι (D G 81 330 1241 it vg goth arm Euthalius). The variety and lack of homogeneity of the longer readings make it difficult to suppose that the shorter reading τῷ αὐτῷ στοιχεῖν arose because of homoeoteleuton.

All other witnesses, as it seems, read ναὶ. 4:3b - σύζυγε - Some have taken this word as a proper name, ύζυγε ( Syzygus ). 4:3c - τῶν λοιπῶν συνεργῶν μου {A} - Because of scribal inadvertence two early witnesses (p 16vid *) read τῶν συνεργῶν μου καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν ( with Clement and my fellow workers, and the others whose names are written ). The word ἐπιστἠμη does not otherwise occur in the New Testament. 4:13 - με {A} - In order to identify who it is that strengthens Paul, the Textus Receptus, following several of the later uncials and many minuscules, adds Χριστῷ.
