Beloved in Christ, Obviously, we all know that our beloved parish is dedicated to the feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos by the Archangel Gabriel. This messenger of God which is the meaning of the word angel in the original Greek is the herald of the coming of Christ into the world. Gabriel brought the glad tidings of joy to the Theotokos, and thereby to all mankind. Ever since the incarnation of Jesus Christ and His subsequent death and resurrection, the Church of Christ has been proclaiming the good news to every generation up to our very own. The question we must ask ourselves is whether we too, have become heralds of the Gospel of Christ. First, let s be clear on what it means to be a herald of the Gospel in the Orthodox sense. This does not mean that we should be standing in the middle of a shopping mall or in front of Walmart, proclaiming the good news of Christ with our loudest voice. Being heralds of the Gospel is much more than speaking about Christ and His salvific plan for mankind. It does, however, have everything to do with living the Word of God in the most exemplary fashion. A true herald of the Gospel of Christ, first and foremost, fully lives the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church. To be a true member of the Body of Christ, we must act as an integral part of the Body, which begins with liturgical worship. Christian worship has historically been communal. Just as the human body cannot fully function without all its members and organs, so it is with the Body of Christ. In church, all of us together experience both the Word of God through holy scripture, as well as partake of the mystical Body and Blood of our Lord through the Holy Eucharist. We hear God s Word with one ear, and we consume the Lord s Body and Blood with one mouth. Being that God has created us with a free will, we don t, however, leave church robotically programmed to think, speak, and act in the same manner. The weekdays in between each Sunday liturgy present each one of us with our on-going challenge of how we apply the gospel message to our daily lives. Being a herald of the Gospel of Christ on a daily basis involves our interpersonal relationships, through which we have the opportunity to be examples of the life of Christ. As Orthodox Christians, this is the strongest message that we can share with our fellow man. Now, to be an imitator of Christ, we must recognize His various attributes as presented to us in the holy gospel. Most important is humility. Our Lord did not come into the world to make a splash, as we would say today. He clearly taught us that He came to serve and not to be served. Christ also taught us that we should treat others as we would like to be treated. It is clear, therefore, FROM FATHER ANTHONY that a true follower of Christ should always think of others before himself. If we wish to represent Christ and His Gospel to those around us, we must acquire humility and seek to love and help our neighbors, whoever they may be. The Lord also consistently showed mercy and compassion to those He encountered in His ministry. Although we have not been given the grace to physically heal those who are ill, we can still be healers of the soul through the compassion and mercy we show to those who suffer. We also constantly encounter in the holy gospels that the Lord did not judge his fellow man, but rather, showed forgiveness and mercy toward people s weakness and shortcomings. Let us remember that Christ also taught us the importance of prayer and fasting, which are virtues very central to the spiritual life of an Orthodox Christian. Besides our liturgical and sacramental obligations, praying and also fasting when required, is how we stay connected to God outside of communal worship. My brothers and sisters in Christ, the following passage from St. Paul s letter to the Philippians, sums up very well how all of us as members of the Body of Christ can be heralds of the Gospel. Brethren, let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 1:27-28; 2:2-4) May these beautiful and inspiring words of St. Paul be an inspiration to all of us as well. We, too, can share the message of the Gospel through our words to those who are willing to listen. In the right time and situation, it is a blessing to share our faith with others, especially those who may be weakened in their faith through illness, tragedy, or plain apathy. But most important is living an exemplary life, so that all those around us will clearly see what it means to be an Orthodox Christian. I pray that you may all be blessed and guided by the Holy Spirit, so that you can strive to live according to the Gospel of Christ every day of your lives. In Christ, +Fr. Anthony

FROM FATHER ANTHONY NATIVITY FAST BEGINS 11/15 For the most part, Orthodox Christians are very aware of the fast of Great Lent and Holy Week. For many however, lesser attention is given to the other major fast periods of the ecclesiastical year. These are as follows: the 40-day Nativity Fast, the Apostles Fast in June (length varies according to the date of Pascha), the 14- day Dormition Fast of August, and the three, one-day fasts on the feast of the Holy Cross (9/14), Theophany Eve (1/5), and the beheading of St. John the Forerunner (8/29). On 11/15 the Holy Orthodox Church begins its preparation for the Nativity of our Lord through a 40- day fast. The majority of this period is considered a relaxed fast, and not particularly strict until the final 12 days. Following are the generally accepted guidelines in their full form: From 11/15 12/12: Fasting from all animal products. Fish, wine (all alcoholic beverages), and olive oil may be consumed every day except for Wednesdays and Fridays, with some exceptions. Shellfish may be consumed daily. Note: Fasting suspended for Thanksgiving. From 12/13 12/24: Fasting from all animal products including fish, and from wine and olive oil, except Saturdays and Sundays when wine and oil are permitted. Shellfish may be consumed daily. Remember that fasting should be relaxed for health reasons, and for growing children. Your spiritual father is always available to guide you accordingly. ORTHODOXY ON TAP 11/9 Beloved young adults of our parish, as I announced in the October bulletin, we will be hosting an "Orthodoxy on Tap" event for our region on November 9th. It will also include young adults from the parishes of Cohasset, Braintree, and Mansfield. This has been a popular, ongoing event in the Boston Metro area for young adults 21 and over. These gatherings consist of a casual gettogether over a glass of wine or beer and pizza, while hearing a presentation and engaging in a discussion of our faith and its application to our lives. "Orthodoxy on Tap" will take place on Thursday, 11/9 at the Chateau Restaurant in Stoughton, 1165 Park Street (Rt. 27), at 7:00 pm. The presenter will be Dr. Timothy Patitsas, one of our younger, dynamic professors at Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline. His topic will be, Beauty Will Save the World. We look forward to seeing all of you there, and please bring a friend or relative! SPIRITUAL WISDOM Every faithful man and woman, when they have risen from sleep in the morning, before they touch any work at all, should wash their hands and pray to God and so go to their work Pray also before your body rests on the bed. (St. Hippolytus of Pontus) Forget your good deeds as soon as possible Do not record your good deeds, for if you record them, they will soon fade. But if you forget them, they will be written in eternity (St. Nicholas of Serbia) Do not sorrow for the dying man; rather sorrow for him who is living in sin, for sin is true death. (St. John Chrysostom) While refraining from food, one must also refrain from the passions. (St. Macarius of Optina) When we are having difficulties, we need to acquire a spirit of contrition, pray, and remain patient. We have to endure less than satisfactory circumstances because we are called to be in the world in order to undergo affliction. However, this shouldn t be a cause for despair, but rather, we must continue our struggle. This is our invisible and constant battle; this is the yoke that Christ has given us. (St. Sergei of Vanves) Cultivate patience. When there is no patience, all goodness in the soul is quickly suppressed and sin grows. Patience adorns the soul with diamonds which are not of the earth but belong to the Jerusalem that is above. Patience increases obedience to the Divine words that have been written (St. Raphael of Lesvos) Envy is a food of the mind, corrupting it with poisonous juices, and ceasing not to torment it miserably with the thought of a neighbor s happy success. (St. John Cassian) ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Our weekly program of adult religious education continues to be offered on an alternating basis, on Wednesday mornings and evenings. We begin with either an abbreviated orthros at 10 am, or small vespers at 7 pm, followed by class in the conference room. FROM FATHER ANTHONY FROM THE HOLY FATHERS The following is from the writings of St. Nicholas Cabasilas A Commentary on the Divine Liturgy. The Opening Doxology The Liturgy of the Catechumens First of all, every holy rite begins with the doxology: Blessed in the kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Intercourse with God consists of thanksgiving, doxology, confession, and petition. The first of these is doxology, because when grateful servants approach their Master, it is fitting that they should begin not by pushing their own affairs into the foreground, but should concentrate on those of their master. Such is the nature of doxology. In petitioning we have in mind the advancement of our own interests. In confessing we seek to be delivered from evils and accuse ourselves. In giving thanks we clearly rejoice in the good things which we enjoy. But in doxology we lay aside ourselves and all our interest and glorify the Lord for His own sake, for His power and His glory. And so the very nature and the appropriateness of the act demand that the doxology should come first The Meaning of the Prayer for God s Mercy after Every Petition There is another question to be asked: why is it that, whereas the priest asks them to pray for so many different things, the faithful in fact ask for one thing only mercy? Why is this the sole cry they send forth to God? In the first place, as we have already said, it is because this prayer implies both gratitude and confession. Secondly, to beg God s mercy is to ask for His kingdom, that kingdom which Christ promised to give to those who seek for it, assuring them that all things else of which they have need will be added unto them. Because of this, this prayer is sufficient for the faithful since its application is general The Commendation After he has prayed for all his intentions, the priest calls upon the faithful to commend themselves to God, saying to them: Having commemorated her who is all-holy, immaculate, and blessed above all, our glorious Lady, the Mother of God and every virgin Mary, and all the Saints, let us commend ourselves and each other and our whole lives to Christ It is not given to all to commend themselves to God and to place themselves in His care. For the words of commendation are not in themselves enough; it is necessary that God should accept us. It is essential that we have assurance (of this acceptance), and that only comes from a clear conscience; such a conscience as we have when our own heart does not reproach us, when we concern ourselves with the things of God, when, in order to care for His interests, we do not hesitate to neglect our own. For then we abandon all anxiety for our own affairs, confidently committing them into God s hands, in the sure and certain faith that He will accept our trust and will preserve it Of the Antiphonary Chants and Their Accompanying Prayers While the deacon presides at the petitions and the holy people pray, the priest himself within the sanctuary prays in silence for those present and for the holy house, that God may pour forth upon them a rich stream of mercy and love. He concludes by giving them the reason for his supplications, and the reason why God, in fulfilling them, will only be doing what is just. It is not, he says, that those who beseech Him are worthy or have any right to receive, but because to Thee belong all glory, honour and worship. Because of Thy glory I beseech Thee for these things. He says; since to treat us, unworthy as we are, with such love and generosity, redounds to His glory. And this glorification is becoming to Him, as David says: Not unto us, O Lord, but unto Thy name give glory. This is why, when he has finished his silent prayer, the priest recites the explanatory verse in an audible voice that all may hear, since it is a conclusion and a doxology; he wished in this way to bring all the faithful to share in his hymn of praise, that God may be worshipped by the whole Church. And the congregation do indeed unite themselves to his prayer, for when he recited this doxology all the faithful say Amen, and by this acclamation take to themselves as their own the prayers of the priest (to be continued next month)

GREEK MESSAGE Ανακοίνωση της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής για την οικονομική κατάσταση Ανακοίνωση για την Οικονομική Κατάσταση της Αρχιεπισκοπής Από τον Οκτώβριο του 2016 και μέχρι τις αρχές του 2017, Ο Σεβασμιώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Γέρων Αμερικής κ. Δημήτριος και αξιωματούχοι της Εκτελεστικής επιτροπής του Αρχιεπισκοπικού Συμβουλίου πληροφορήθηκαν ότι η Αρχιεπισκοπή αντιμετώπιζε ένα σοβαρό και σύνθετο οικονομικό έλλειμμα το οποίο είχε δημιουργηθεί από αρκετά χρόνια. Ταυτόχρονα, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος πρότεινε και το Αρχιεπισκοπικό Συμβούλιο εξέλεξε νέα ηγεσία του Αρχιεπισκοπικού Συμβουλίου. Ο κ. Γεώργιος Τσαντίκος, διευθύνων σύμβουλος της εταιρείας Rockefeller & Company στη Νέα Υόρκη ονομάστηκε Αντιπρόεδρος του Αρχιεπισκοπικού Συμβουλίου. Ο κ. Στις αρχές Σεπτεμβρίου 2017, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος ζήτησε από τον Πρωτοσύγκελλο, Θεοφιλέστατο Επίσκοπο Φασιανής κ. Αντώνιο, να αναλάβει την θέση κλειδί της διοικητικής ευθύνης και εποπτείας μετά την παραίτηση του πρώην Εκτελεστικού Διευθυντή Διοικήσεως. «Το έλλειμμα και η απροσδόκητη φύση του μας προκάλεσε πολύ μεγάλη έκπληξη και λύπη», είπε ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος. «Τα επώδυνα και αναπόφευκτα μέτρα που λαμβάνουμε για να διορθώσουμε την κατάσταση θα έχουν σημαντικό αντίκτυπο στις λειτουργίες της Αρχιεπισκοπής και κινούμεθα αποφασιστικά και με πεποίθηση για να διορθώσουμε τις αδυναμίες των δημοσιονομικών ελέγχων και των λειτουργιών που αποκαλύφθηκαν κατά την κρίση, και για να επανοικοδομήσουμε τα οικονομικά μας». «Η Ιερά Επαρχιακή Σύνοδος, η Εκτελεστική Επιτροπή του Αρχιεπισκοπικού Συμβουλίου και εγώ θέλουμε ο κλήρος και ο λαός της Αρχιεπισκοπής μας να είναι απολύτως πληροφορημένοι για το τί συνέβει και για το τι κάνουμε ώστε να υπερβούμε τα προβλήματα», δήλωσε ο Σεβασμιώτατος. Η νέα ηγετική ομάδα, διά της γενναιοδωρίας του ταμία κ. Μιχαήλ Ψαρού, προσέλαβε την εταιρεία Grant Thornton, μία από τις μεγαλύτερες ανεξάρτητες λογιστικές και συμβουλευτικές εταιρείες στον κόσμο, να προβεί σε λεπτομερή ανασκόπηση των λειτουργιών της Αρχιεπισκοπής και να παράσχει μια έκθεση η οποία θα περιλαμβάνει συστάσεις για τους κατάλληλους εσωτερικούς ελέγχους και διαδικασίες για την δημιουργία ενός εκκλησιαστικού μη κερδοσκοπικού ιδρύματος παγκοσμίου επιπέδου. Η τελική έκθεση θα παραληφθεί εντός του Οκτωβρίου 2017 και τα αποτελέσματά της θα γνωστοποιηθούν στην Εκτελεστική Επιτροπή, στο Αρχιεπισκοπικό Συμβούλιο και στο κοινό. Ο Πρωτοσύγκελλος θα εφαρμόσει τις συστάσεις. Εν τω μεταξύ, η νέα ηγετική ομάδα άλλαξε σημαντικά ορισμένες διεργασίες στην Αρχιεπισκοπή και άρχισε να εφαρμόζει εσωτερικούς ελέγχους και διαδικασίες. Οι αλλαγές αυτές, που εφαρμόσθηκαν σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα θα φέρουν τάξη, συγκρότηση και ακεραιότητα στις λειτουργίες της Αρχιεπισκοπής. Ήδη έχουν ληφθεί τα παρακάτω μέτρα: Θα διορισθεί νέος πρόεδρος της Οικονομικής Επιτροπής του Αρχιεπισκοπικού Συμβουλίου. Ο διευθυντής του Τμήματος Οικονομικών απηλλάγη των καθηκόντων του. Η Αρχιεπισκοπή θα διορίσει μέλη σε Ανεξάρτητη Ελεγκτική Επιτροπή. Τα μέλη της ως άνω επιτροπής θα πρέπει να έχουν επαγγελματική εμπειρία ως πιστοποιημένοι δημόσιοι λογιστές (CPA) και ελεγκτές. Έχει αρχίσει η αναζήτηση για πρόσληψη λογιστικής εταιρείας η οποία θα προβεί σε ανεξάρτητο δικανικό έλεγχο των οικονομικών της Αρχιεπισκοπής για τα τελευταία τρία χρόνια. Ανεξάρτητος δικανικός έλεγχος των οικονομικών του Αγίου Νικολάου βρίσκεται ήδη εν εξελίξει. Δημιουργείται Ανεξάρτητη Επιτροπή για αυτό το σκοπό και η λογιστική εταιρεία Price Waterhouse Cooper έχει προσληφθεί. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Δημήτριος διόρισε τον π. Σωτήριο Μπαρούντι ως Γενικό Διευθυντή Οικονομικών (CFO) της Αρχιεπισκοπής. Ο π. Μπαρούντι είναι πτυχιούχος στη διοίκηση επιχειρήσεων και κατέχει Masters Λογιστικής. Πρό του διορισμού του η Αρχιεπισκοπή δεν είχε θέση Γ.Δ.Ο. (CFO). Έχει πραγματοποιηθεί μείωση του προσωπικού κατά περίπου 25%. Εφ όσον η οικονομική λογία παραμείνει στα περυσινά επίπεδα η Αρχιεπισκοπή θα μπορέσει να λειτουργήσει σχεδόν χωρίς έλλειμμα το επόμενο έτος. Μείωση σχεδόν 25% έχει εφαρμοσθεί στα λειτουργικά έξοδα. Γενικά διοικητικά έξοδα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων κινητών τηλεφώνων του προσωπικού, πιστωτικών καρτών, ταξιδιωτικών εξόδων έχουν μειωθεί ή και τελείως απαλειφθεί.

MHNYMA ΤΟΥ ΣΕΒΑΣΜΙΩΤΑΤΟΥ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΟΥ ΑΜΕΡΙΚΗΣ κ. ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ ΠΡΟΣ ΤΟ ΠΛΗΡΩΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΗΣ ΑΜΕΡΙΚΗΣ Προσφιλέστατοι και ευλογημένοι Χριστιανοί μου της Ιεράς Ελληνορθόδοξου Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής, Σας χαιρετώ όλους εις το όνομα του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού, ο Οποίος είναι τό φῶς τοῦ κόσμου(ἰωαν. 8:12), ἡ ὁδός καί ἡ ἀλήθεια καί ἡ ζωή (Ἰωαν. 14:6). Σας γράφω για να σας ενημερώσω με τις σωστές πληροφορίες σχετικά με ορισμένα σοβαρά γεγονότα που έχουν συμβεί τους τελευταίους μήνες. Η επικοινωνία που ακολουθεί βασίζεται στην ιερή οδηγία του Αποστόλου Παύλου ότι πρέπει να ζούμε ἀληθεύοντες ἐν ἀγάπῃ (Εφ. 4:15) Εργαζόμεθα μαζί στην Ιερά Ελληνική Ορθόδοξο Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής επί 18 και πλέον χρόνια. Κατά την διάρκεια αυτών των 18 ετών αντιμετωπίσαμε - στην άσκηση του ιερού μας έργου - χαρά, αγάπη, αρμονία, επιτεύγματα και ενότητα, αλλά και θλίψη, απάθεια, δυσκολίες, απομακρύνσεις και εχθρότητα. Ως μέλη της Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας η οποία είναι σῶμα Χριστοῦ (Α Κορινθ. 12:27) εργαζόμεθα με ειλικρινή αφοσίωση για την προώθηση στην Αμερική της Ορθοδόξου Χριστιανικής Πίστεως καθώς και των παγκοσμίων αξιών της Ελληνικής Παραδόσεως. Τα τελευταία 18 χρόνια έχουμε ένθερμα εργαστεί από κοινού ακολουθώντας την σωτήρια οδό της αληθείας και της ζωής του Ευαγγελίου. Το ίδιο χρονικό διάστημα διαπιστώσαμε με ευγνωμοσύνη το γεγονός ότι, με τη χάρη του Θεού, πραγματοποιήθηκε σημαντική και επαληθεύσιμη πρόοδος σε όλους τους τομείς της Αρχιεπισκοπής μας. Υπήρξαν, ωστόσο, στην πορεία μας δύσκολες και περίπλοκες προσπάθειες, απροσδόκητες κοινωνικοοικονομικές συνθήκες και οργανωτικές ελλείψεις για τις οποίες πραγματικά λυπούμεθα. Ως Αρχιεπισκοπή, θεωρούμε ακόμη και το τελευταίο δολλάριο που προσφέρεται για το έργο της Εκκλησίας ως ιερό. Όπως στη διήγηση του Ευαγγελίου κατά την οποία μία χήρα πτωχή έβαλε λεπτά δύο (Μαρκ. 12:41-44), έτσι και σήμερα η εικόνα της ηλικιωμένης γυναικός, η οποία αν και ζει με περιορισμένο εισόδημα προσφέρει γενναιόδωρα και εκ του υστερήματός της στην Εκκλησία για την διάδοση του Ευαγγελίου, είναι συνεχώς στο νού μας. Ως Αρχιεπισκοπή βρεθήκαμε προσφάτως αντιμέτωποι με ένα αριθμό οικονομικών δυσκολιών και προβλημάτων και λάβαμε τα κατάλληλα μέτρα για τη διόρθωσή των. Ως συνέπεια αυτών των μέτρων, βλέπουμε ήδη θετικά αποτελέσματα και αποκτούμε καλύτερη προοπτική για το μέλλον. Ένα πολύ σημαντικό βήμα για την αντιμετώπιση αυτών των προγενεστέρων ανεπαρκειών και ελλείψεων είναι η πολύ καλύτερη ρύθμιση και συστημική ενίσχυση της διοικητικής και οικονομικής διαχειρίσεως της Αρχιεπισκοπής. Πολλοί από εσάς μπορεί να γνωρίζετε ότι στην μακράς διαρκείας ζωή της Εκκλησίας, ακόμη και κατά την «χρυσή εποχή» της Πατερικής περιόδου και την εποχή των επτά Οικουμενικών Συνόδων υπήρξαν συνεχώς πολλές θεολογικές, πολιτικές κοινωνικές και οικονομικές δυσκολίες προκαλώντας σύγχυση, πόνο και σοβαρή ανησυχία. Μήπως οι δυσκολίες εκείνες εμπόδισαν το Άγιο Πνεύμα να δράσει διά της Εκκλησίας; Όχι. Μήπως εμπόδισαν την διάδοση του Ευαγγελίου; Όχι. Μάλλον οι εποχές εκείνες χαρακτηρίστηκαν από καταπληκτική πρόοδο και δυναμική ανάπτυξη της Εκκλησίας. Παρομοίως και σήμερα, παρά τις παρούσες δυσκολίες τις οποίες αντιμετωπίζει η Αρχιεπισκοπή μας, δεν υπάρχει καμία αμφιβολία ότι πρόκειται για ένα περιορισμένο χρονοδιάγραμμα. Ένα χρονοδιάγραμμα το οποίο δεν μας εμποδίζει καθ οιονδήποτε τρόπο από το να εργαζόμεθα εντατικά ανταποκρινόμενοι πλήρως στις προκαθορισμένες υποχρεώσεις μας και στην κλήση μας να προσφέρουμε ως Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί το πλήρες, γνήσιο και σωτήριο μήνυμα του Ευαγγελίου του Χριστού. Ζούμε σε μία εποχή που χαρακτηρίζεται ως εποχή απουσίας της αληθείας, συγχύσεως και αποπροσανατολισμού. Καλούμεθα επειγόντως να αντιμετωπίσουμε αυτή την πρόκληση και να εκπληρώσουμε την ιερή αποστολική μας κλήση προσφέροντας αγάπη και αλήθεια εν ονόματι του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού. Τώρα είναι ο καιρός να συνεχίσουμε πυρετωδώς το έργο μας από κοινού για το παρόν και το μέλλον της Ιεράς Ελληνικής Ορθοδόξου Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής. Εν όψει όσων έχουν συμβεί, πρέπει να διδαχθούμε από το παρελθόν και να γίνουμε ισχυρότεροι ως εκκλησιαστική οικογένεια. Ενώ ο πόνος και η μνήμη των παρελθόντων ανεπαρκειών και λαθών θα μείνουν πάντα μαζί μας, εν τούτοις γνωρίζουμε ότι είμεθα Εκκλησία η οποία δεν κηρύττει απόγνωση αλλά ελπίδα. Αυτή την ελπίδα, ὡς ἄγκυραν ἔχομεν τῆς ψυχῆς ἀσφαλῆ τε καί βεβαίαν (Εβρ. 6:19), και απηχούμε τα εμπνευσμένα λόγια του Αποστόλου Παύλου, τά μέν ὀπίσω ἐπιλανθανόμενος τοῖς δέ ἔμπροσθεν ἐπεκτεινόμενος κατά σκοπόν διώκω ἐπί τό βραβεῖον τῆς ἄνω κλήσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (Φιλιπ. 3:13-14). Ο σκοπός αυτός είναι για τον κάθε ένα από εμάς το να ανταποκριθεί ολόψυχα στην κλήση του Κυρίου μας, καθώς ἀπέσταλκέ με ὁ πατήρ, κἀγώ πέμπω ὑμᾶς (Ἰωαν. 20:21) οὐχ ὑμεῖς με ἐξελέξασθε, ἀλλ ἐγώ ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς, καί ἔθηκα ὑμᾶς ἵνα ὑμεῖς ὑπάγητε καί καρπόν φέρητε, καί ὁ καρπός ὑμῶν μένῃ (Ἰωαν. 15:16). PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners, PRESIDENT S CORNER On behalf of Father Anthony, and the Parish Council, I would like to wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving. This time of year reminds us to be thankful for all that God has bestowed upon us. Let us be grateful for all our blessings and be generous towards others. As you know, one year ago we celebrated our church's 100-Year Anniversary. Since then many new projects have been undertaken by your Parish Council to continuously restore and beautify our church as we embark on the next 100 years. Thanks to the generosity of so many of you, the stewards and organizations of our church, the following list of projects have been completed. I am happy to announce that all these projects were paid for in full without the need to borrow money from any financial institution. 1. Completion of the final phase of the roof restoration below the dome and choir areas; 2. Repairs of the outside dome lights to prevent future damage/leaks to the roof membrane and the inside of the church proper; 3. Preventative repairs to the exterior windows around the dome as well as the choir loft areas by re-caulking and wet sealing them to prevent leaks in the future given that they were 30 years old; 4. Securing the playground area by fencing it off and adding four picnic tables for families to enjoy; 5. Construction of a storage building/shed in the back of the church to house festival equipment, thereby freeing up necessary storage space inside the church; 6. Repairs to the main parking lot by eliminating large cracks, broken asphalt and a sink hole that created a hazard. Seal coating of the entire main parking lot and re-striping of the parking spaces; 7. Installation of a new compressor and refrigeration unit in the walk-in cooler located in the kitchen that was over 25 years old which became problematic; 8. Upgraded the lighting control system throughout the church; 9. Re-finishing of the wood floor in the gymnasium that required sanding down the floor, adding four coats of polyurethane finish, game lines and a vented wall base around the perimeter of the gymnasium - donated by The Ladies of Philoptochos in cooperation with the Parish Council; and 10. Installation of a new dishwasher in the kitchen - donated by the Lingos family and The Ladies of Philoptochos in cooperation again with the Parish Council. These projects were completed contemporaneously with all the successful fundraising events, luncheon's, food festivals and assemblies that have taken place throughout the year. Needless to say, it was a very busy and productive year!!! Stewardship was hard at work throughout the year for which we should all be extremely proud of. Collaboratively, we have been making positive strides in beautifying, preserving, and strengthening the bond between us and our church. I encourage those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to make your contribution towards these projects to consider doing so at this time. This will enable us to replenish our maintenance reserve account for future projects such as, the repair and painting of our church ceiling and walls inside the church proper. Important upcoming dates that we look forward to seeing everyone attend : Sunday, November 12, 2017 Fall General Assembly Following the Divine Liturgy, there will be a complimentary luncheon where we can gather together in Christian fellowship, enjoy a nice meal prepared by our Parish Council, followed by the state of the church presentation. There will be a question and answer discussion where we welcome our stewards to express their thoughts regarding our parish's needs as we move forward into the next 100 years and beyond. So as to permit the Parish Council to properly prepare for the luncheon, we ask that you kindly call the church office to reserve your seats no later than Monday November 6th, 2017. Sunday, December 31, 2017 New Year's Eve Celebration To be held in our community center. Please see the church office for tickets. Irene Economos asked what funds were put into the Maintenance Reserve Account. Nick Babanikas listed the funds that were placed in that account. Jim Sarantopoulos questioned if there would be a cap on the Maintenance Reserve Account. Unanimous PRESIDENT S REMARKS Nick spoke about the upcoming Paint Night and all are welcome to come to paint the picture of a boat scene. A fun night for all. Regarding the treasury, We are in good shape $20,000.00 was raised for Fundraisers. Of which $15,000.00 was raised for: The New Year s Eve Dance The Lenten Luncheon The Palm Sunday Fish Dinner. Stewardship is up We should be proud of the projects that were completed Nick commented that we need to get the 18-35 year old involved with the Church. A committee to promote new members needs to be formed. We need to inform people of what our Church has to offer. Greek School-Sunday School-Hope & Joy groups-goya-dance Group-Choir-OPA-Basketball program and a facility to rent. We welcome anyone who wished to be on that committee to join us.

FATHER ANTHONY S REMARKS Father thanked Fr. John, the Philoptochos, the decorating committee, and all who helped during Lent and Holy Week. He also mentioned that almost all the floral arrangements had been donated. Regarding stewardship, Father stated that we should not approach church participation as a business simply looking for new customers. A better approach is for all of us to seek spiritual renewal through more frequent participation in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church. We should strive to create a stronger spiritual nucleus in addition to holding fundraisers. That way the grace of the Holy Spirit can work through each of us. Father mentioned what Metropolitan Methodios has commented to his clergy that, per recent studies, many young adults and young families do not feel the need for organized religion. For years we have seen this throughout the Archdiocese with those who only use the Church for sacraments. His Eminence also stated that there comes a time when we can t keep trying to bring back those who show no interest. Father stated that we all need to continue reaching out to those we don t see, and especially by keeping them on the mailing list to receive the monthly bulletins. He also noted that we have many interfaith marriages where there is the potential for conversion. In addition, there are some who attend our services who are not of Greek decent but are Orthodox, and that we need to reach out to them and others potentially in the area. Regarding General Assemblies, Father again asked that we put the highlights of the assemblies in the following month s bulletin. OLD BUSINESS Roof Project Update: A small section of the roof needs repairs. The caulking around the windows needs to be done and install Plexiglas over the windows. Father Anthony suggested we use tinted Plexiglas so that the sun will not shine on the Icons and possibly cause fading. The cost of these repairs are estimated to be around $10-12,000.00 The project should be done within the next few months. 2016 Auditor s Report: Heidi Mason thanked both Irene Economos and Jim Sarantopoulos for helping the Audit Committee. The committee reported that the financial documents of the Annunciation Church for the period of January 2016-December 2016 are up to date but with a few discrepancies to be corrected: Reimbursement forms must have receipts attached and be approved by the Treasurer and/or by the President. Invoices generated from Debit card purchases must be kept in the corresponding month of Accounts Payable Folder. An invoice, Bill of Sale, or reimbursement form must be attached to every check stub. As recommended last year, all Monthly Financial Reports, including Bank statements generated, must be included in a monthly folder. Further, it is suggested to review and define the roles and responsibilities of the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer according to the Uniform Parish Regulations. The report was signed by Heidi Mason, Irene Economos and James Sarantopoulos 100 Year Centennial Anniversary Report: Nick Babanikas reported that $108,000.00 was generated by the event. President Babanikas also informed the General Assembly that a Maintenance Reserve Account was established and that approximately $17,000.00 was donated from various parishioners. The Tree of Life Account has been renamed to the Maintenance Reserve Account with an approximate account balance of $125,000.00 for future needs. He thanked George Alexis for a wonderful job as Chairman of the 100 Year Anniversary Celebration. George Alexis noted that another $75,000.00 can be made by the sale of Tree of Life Leaves and Rocks.

Strategic Planning Committee: The committed was unable to meet because of the Weather conditions. They have met with the Archdiocese representative to discuss several ideas, including the use of our land, possibly renting to a business at the corner of the large parking lot. The idea is new and needs to be looked into. Merger of Scholarship and Other Trust Accounts or the purpose of professional financial management: Discussed was putting the Scholarship accounts into a higher yielding interest account. Also discussed was to put ½ million dollars for a higher rate of return. Storage Facility Build-out: Prior estimates for a 40x18 build out was $50-65,000 Jim Mihos has looked at a 8x40 pre-made unit to be placed in back of the Building near the cooking area. Cost is $7-10,000.00 Playground Construction Update: The Georgantis family had donated $50.000.00 for the construction of a playground and to include excavation. Some of the excavation had been donated by Bo (Christy) Mihos. At that time, it was stipulated that no funds would come from the Church Accounts. In order to complete the project with fencing, an additional $10,000.00 is needed. The Parish Council needs the General Assembly approval to allot $10,000.00 to complete the project. Motion made by George Alexis to look into the original diagram of the playground and to approve $10,000.00 to complete the project. Seconded by Ilias Potsis. Unanimous : NEW BUSINESS Renovation of the Church Lounge: President Babanikas outlined what renovations and improvements are planned. KOLIVA If you are planning a memorial service and would like to order koliva please call the church office. We would appreciate one weeks notice in advance of the memorial service to prepare the koliva. The cost is $100 and checks should be made payable to the Ladies Philoptochos Society. SHUT IN VISITATIONS Anyone who would like a visit from the Ladies of Philoptochos, or knows of someone who would like some company, please contact the church office. PHILOXENIA HOUSE Our Sisters that currently visit the Philoxenia House are now planning on visiting monthly and encourage others to join them. The monthly visits will be on Sundays after coffee hour.
