You Belong Here! The MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Something strange is happening- - there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear. He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: "My Lord be with you all." Christ answered him: "And with your spirit." He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: "Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light." I am your God, who for your sake have become your son. Out of love for you and for your descendants I now by my own authority command all who are held in bondage to come forth, all who are in darkness to be enlightened, all who are sleeping to arise. I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be held a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead. Rise up, work of my hands, you who were created in my image. Rise, let us leave this place, for you are in me and I am in you; together we form only one person and we cannot be separated. For your sake I, your God, became your son; I, the Lord, took the form of a slave; I, whose home is above the heavens, Where there is no vision, the people perish. (Proverbs 29:18) THE LORD S DESCENT INTO THE UNDERWORLD descended to the earth and beneath the earth. For your sake, for the sake of man, I became like a man without help, free among the dead. For the sake of you, who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and I was crucified in a garden. See on my face the spittle I received in order to restore to you the life I once breathed into you. See there the marks of the blows I received in order to refashion your warped nature in my image. On my back see the marks of the scourging I endured to remove the burden of sin that weighs upon your back. See my hands, nailed firmly to a tree, for you who once wickedly stretched out your hand to a tree. I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side for you who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side has healed the pain in yours. My sleep will rouse you from your sleep in hell. The sword that pierced me has sheathed the sword that was turned against you. Rise, let us leave this place. The enemy led you out of the earthly paradise. I will not restore you to that paradise, but I will enthrone you in heaven. I forbade you the tree that was only a symbol of life, but see, I who am life itself am now one with you. I appointed cherubim to guard you as slaves are guarded, but now I make them worship you as God. The throne formed by cherubim awaits you, its bearers swift and eager. The bridal chamber is adorned, the banquet is ready, the eternal dwelling places are prepared, the treasure houses of all good things lie open. The kingdom of heaven has been prepared for you from all eternity." From an ancient homily for Holy Saturday (P.G. 43, 439, 451, 462-463)

DID YOU KNOW?... OUR CHURCH S TEACHING ABOUT CREMATION The New Testament teaches that the body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. The body is further sanctified by the incarnation of Christ God becoming Man in the body. Consistent with this teaching, the body is an integral part of the whole person, and the Church teaches and expects the resurrection from the dead of the body and the soul, when God s Kingdom comes in its fullness. The Church considers cremation to be the deliberate desecration and destruction of what God has made, and insists that the body be buried for the natural process to take place. As the denial of the resurrection, in cases where there is intention for the body of a deceased person to be cremated, a church funeral is not allowed, either in the church, or the Funeral home or any other place. Additionally, memorial services with kolyva are not allowed, since the significance between the kernel of wheat and the body has been intentionally destroyed. from Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Yearbook 2014 2015 STEWARDSHIP YOU BELONG HERE! 2015 STEWARDSHIP UPDATE As of March 18, 2015: 340 families have committed $ 194,195.00 How about you?
HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE: 847/647-8880 From Father Dean Dear Stewards and Friends, April 2015 ΚΑΛΟ ΚΑΙ ΑΓΙΟ ΠΑΣΧΑ! HAPPY AND BLESSED PASCHA! Pascha, the Feast of feasts, is nearly here! Great Lent has nearly ended. It is such a beautiful season in its simplicity and somberness; the prayers are so powerful as our Church tries to direct us by helping us remember who we are and where we are going. And the special weekday Lenten services of Compline (Απόδειπνον), the Presanctified Liturgy and the Salutations to the Theotokos help in a mystical and mysterious way; while helping us realize how far we have fallen away from God, at the same time they bring us comfort and guidance in restoring closeness to Him. I hope that Pascha will be especially meaningful for you this year. Those of us who have been following the Lenten discipline from the beginning, and those who came at the eleventh hour are all invited to enter the joy of the Kingdom! Let s try to see Pascha not only as a sumptuous meal, but as our accepting God s love and sacrifice in a substantial way! I found two articles (on the cover and on page 8) that may help! (But you can t read them if you re in a hurry.) The first article talks of Adam being terrorized in fear on seeing the Son of God after His crucifixion and Resurrection. Adam was created by Him and disobeyed Him; now He comes and confronts Adam. Wow! Think about it! The second article explains that the Resurrection of Christ defeats death and therefore condemns us to immortality. Our Orthodox faith is a treasure house of spiritual wisdom and experience. We are invited to take as much as we can! But before we get there, we have a busy week! Our ladies are hard at work, preparing for our annual Easter Bake Sale, that will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, April 1-2. You can shop for Easter bread, tsourekia, red eggs and other home-made goodies! Bring your friends, too! April 4 is the Saturday of Lazaros. This is a very important holiday that we have neglected. We celebrate the glorious miracle of Jesus raising Lazaros from the dead! There will be Liturgy that morning, followed by our annual Family Retreat crafts, lessons, lunch, and projects for moms, dads, children and grandparents together! Don t forget to make your reservations for our annual, delicious Palm Sunday Luncheon, too! We have all these occasions to celebrate! It is so fitting that we can celebrate our holidays both as spiritual and as physical realities. By doing so in sacrament, prayer, food and song, we understand the unity of our souls and bodies as we strive to grow closer to one another and to God! No one celebrates Pascha like the Orthodox! Dear Fellow Stewards of St. Haralambos, PHASE 3 MOVING AHEAD! As you know we had a special General Assembly on March 5 th to share the progress and to offer an opportunity for stewards to share their thoughts. Our Committee presented plans for the Phase 3 Expansion of our facilities to include a gymnasium/hall, new kitchen, meeting space, classrooms, storage space and the renovation of our existing building and those present were pleased with the design and offered a few suggestions as well as had many questions answered. Their response was overwhelmingly positive! SELECTION OF ARCHITECT After a lengthy period of time during which the committee developed a Request for Proposal, four architectural firms responded. The committee met with and interviewed all of the architects as well as their support engineers, and after lengthy review, Axios Architects, a firm owned by Mr. Bill Kokalias, was chosen and contracted. Mr. Kokalias has been working on the design and construction drawings for the past several months including several meetings with the building committee. SELECTION OF BUILDING CONTRACTOR At this point, the building committee is preparing to send the plans out for preliminary bid to 5 or 6 contractors recommended by the building committee. The goal is still to break ground immediately following the 2015 Food Festival. The committee believes this is feasible provided the funding is in place. PERMITS AND ZONING During this time frame there are several other processes taking place. The Village has required that we have a plat of consolidation prepared so that all of our property will now be considered one single parcel. Additionally, as we are technically in an area which is zoned Residential, we will need a Special Use Permit from the Village. Both of these requirements are under way as we speak. The committee is excited about the progress that is being made and looks forward to further reporting to the parish on the status of this most important project in the life of our community! Everyone agrees that we are overcrowded and need space to expand our programs and activities. Everyone s support will be needed! Very soon, you will receive information about how you can help. We have been looking forward to this for many years. THE TIME HAS COME! The Phase III Committee ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! CHRIST IS RISEN!

CONDEMNED TO IMMORTALITY: A MEDITATION ON THE RESURRECTION People condemned God to death; with His Resurrection He condemned them to immortality! For striking Him, God returned embraces; for insults, blessings; for death, immortality. Never did men show more hate towards God than when they crucified Him; and God never showed His love towards people more than when He was resurrected. Mankind wanted to make God dead, but God, with His Resurrection, made people alive; the crucified God resurrected on the third day and thereby killed death! There is no more death. Immortality is surrounding man and his entire world. With the Resurrection of the God-Man, the nature of man is irreversibly led toward the road of immortality and man's nature becomes destructive to death itself. For until the Resurrection of Christ, death was destructive for man; from the Resurrection of Christ, man's nature becomes destructive to death. If man lives in the faith of the Resurrected God-Man, he lives above death, he is unreachable for her; death is under man's feet. Death where is thy sting? Hell, where is thy victory? And when a man who believes in Christ dies, he only leaves his body as his clothes, in which he will be dressed again on the Day of Last Judgement. Before the Resurrection of the God-Man, death was the second nature of man; life was first and death was second. Man became accustomed to death as something natural. But after His Resurrection the Lord changed everything: as it was only natural until Christ's Resurrection that the people became mortal, so after Christ's Resurrection it was natural that the people became immortal. Through sin, man becomes mortal and temporal; with the Resurrection of the God-Man, he becomes immortal and eternal. In this lies the strength, in this lies the power, in this lies the might of Christ's Resurrection. Without the Resurrection there is no Christianity. Among the miracles, this is the greatest one; all other miracles begin and end with it. From it sprouted the faith and the love and the hope and the prayer and the love toward God. from "Philosophical Cliffs Archimandrite Justin Popovic IOCC ANNUAL BANQUET AND SILENT AUCTION TO PROVIDE FOOD AND MEDICINE TO PEOPLE IN NEED AROUND THE WORLD 6:00 pm Thursday evening, April 30, 2015 Café la Cave 2777 Mannheim Road, Des Plaines, IL Donation: $125 Please call St. Haralambos Church Office for reservations, by April 24 847-647-8880
