Sunday, November 8, 2015 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Resurrectional Apolytikion 2 nd Mode When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You. Apolytikion 4 th Mode O Chief Commanders of the heavenly armies, we the unworthy ones entreat you in earnest, that you might with your supplications fortify us, guarding us who run to you and beneath the protection of the pinions of your unmaterial glory, and who with fervor shout: Deliver us, from every danger, as Captains of the hosts on high. St. Vasilios 1 st Mode Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! If you are interested please contact: Steve Stefanopoulos 978-979-3172 sstefanopoulos@papaginos.com or Steve Stephanides Cell 978-968-5348 Home 978 744-8531 BRETHREN, if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his own will. For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere, "What is man that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man, that thou carest for him? Thou didst make him for a little while lower than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet." Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for every one. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering. 18 3
7th Sunday of Luke The Gospel of Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened. 16 5
Some Food for Thought In an initiative by the city of Peabody and Fr Chris to help the homeless in our community, we will be selling soups once a month at coffee hour to help pay for food, clothing, laundry and whatever other needs that they may have. 100% of the proceeds will go to this worthy cause. Our first soup sale will be on November 1st and we will be making lentil soup (Fakh/). If you would like to place an order for soup contact Brandon Simpson at 978-223-0317 6 15
Some Food for Thought Oftentimes, when a disaster strikes a family, they will naturally turn to their family, friends, and community of faith for assistance. The person they speak to at St. Vasilios usually is our parish priest, Father Chris. We have had parishioners who were forced to vacate their homes because of a fire or other natural disaster. We have had parishioners who had huge financial turnarounds so they had to choose between food on their table or paying their rent. We have had parishioners who had to bear the burden of huge healthcare costs of their spouse or child, and couldn t afford winter clothing. Even most recently, a survey conducted by our city discovered about 14 to 20 people who are homeless and sleeping in the streets within the shadows of our church. (These people may not feel comfortable in a shelter because of a mental illness, a drug addiction, or a past bad experience.) We do not want to send people away when they knock at our door and ask forhelp. We are all working to create a beautiful parish at St. Vasilios, and not just beautiful buildings. A few parishioners, in cooperation with Father Chris and the approval of the Parish Council, have decided to cook a nice, hearty soup once a month for sale after the Sunday Divine Liturgy. One hundred percent of the profits will go to this fund, which will be for the assistance of those in need. We will post the menu in the Sunday church bulletin so you can plan on purchasing some soup for your home, and at the same time your donation will provide us with the necessary resources to help this worthy cause. To preorder, you may call Brandon Simpson at 978-223-0317. CEMETERY VISITS: Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. Philoptochos Christmas luncheon will be held on December 12, 2015 at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, MA at Noon. Please call Fran Katsulis at 978-535-0469 to make your reservation or if you have any questions. MEMORIALS: We commemorate today the blessed memory of the following Members of our parish who have fallen asleep in the Lord: St. Vasilios Men s Club Memorial Service 14 7
