Vesperal Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil on the Paramony of the Nativity of Christ, December 24 The Paramony of the Nativity of Christ Παραµονή τῆς Χριστοῦ Γεννήσεως Great Vespers and the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great Monday through Friday, December 24 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son (Galatians 4:4) to save the human race. Christmas Eve is properly called the Paramony of the Feast of the Nativity, a strict fasting day that immediately precedes the Feast. On this day the Imperial (Royal) Hours are celebrated in the morning. Some of the hymns are similar to those of Theophany as well as to those of Great and Holy Friday, thus tying the symbolism of Christ s Nativity to His death on the Cross. Following Matins and the Imperial Hours, the Vesperal Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great is celebrated. A hierarch may extend oikonomia to certain of his parishes to delay the Vesperal Liturgy from the morning until the evening for the spiritual benefit of the faithful. In the fullness of time, God sent the Archangel Gabriel to the Most-holy Virgin in Nazareth, saying, Rejoice, thou that art highly favored behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son (Luke 1:28, 31). And, when nine months were fulfilled from that Annunciation, Caesar Augustus decreed that each person in the Roman Empire should go to their own town to register and be taxed. Thus, to fulfill this command, the righteous Joseph came with the Most-holy Virgin to Bethlehem, for they were both of the royal lineage of David. Because many had come to this small town for the census, Joseph and Mary sought shelter in a cave which shepherds used as a sheepfold. That all things might be fulfilled, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world was born in this cave-on the night between Saturday and Sunday, on the 25th of December. The Most-holy Virgin gave birth to the Savior of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ, without pain just as He was conceived without sin by the Holy Spirit and not by man. She herself wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, worshiped Him as God, and laid Him in a manger. The righteous Joseph drew near and worshiped Him as the Divine Fruit of the Virgin s womb. Shepherds came in from the fields, directed by an angel of God, and worshiped Him as the Messiah and Savior. A multitude of God s angels sang: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men (Luke 2:14). Three Magi arrived from the east, led by a wondrous star, worshiped Him as the King of kings, and offered Him their gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2). Thus was fulfilled that which was prophesied: The Lord of the world and King of kings was born of a Virgin in Bethlehem, to fulfill of the economy of salvation, to fill our hearts with joy. 1

When the Feast of the Nativity falls on a Sunday or a Monday, however, Great Vespers is celebrated instead on Saturday or Sunday evening, respectively. Great Vespers and the Divine Liturgy Μοnday - Friday Mornning Ὁ Μέγας Ἑσπερινός καὶ ἡ Θεία Λειτουργία Δευτέρᾳ - Παρασκευή Προή With hierarchical permission this Vesperal Divine Liturgy may be deferred from the morning of December 24th to be celebrated in the early evening. The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the water. Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. God saw the light; it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day; the darkness He called Night; and there was evening and morning, one day. Then God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water, and let it divide the water from the water ; and it was so. Thus God made the firmament, and God divided the water under the firmament from the water above the firmament. So God called the firmament Heaven, and God saw that it was good; and there was evening and morning, the second day. Then God said, Let the water under heaven be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear ; and it was so. The water under heaven was gathered into its places, and the dry land appeared. So God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas; and God saw that it was good. Then God said, Let the earth bring forth the herb of grass, bearing seed according to its kind and likeness. Let the fruit tree bear fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind on earth. It was so. Thus the earth brought forth the herb of grass, bearing seed according to its kind and likeness. The fruit tree bore fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind on earth. God saw that it was good. So evening and morning were the third day. Moreover the Lord added this to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, nor will I tempt the Lord! Then Isaiah said, Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary the Lord also? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel. Butter and honey He shall eat, before He knows to prefer evil or choose the good, for before the Child knows good or evil, He refuses the evil to choose the good; and the land you fear because of the presence of the two kings will be abandoned. Moreover the Lord said to me, Take for yourself a large new book, and write on it with a man s pen concerning making a swift plunder of spoils, for it is near at hand. Then make witnesses for Me of faithful men: Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Berechiah. Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son, and the Lord said to me, Call his name Quickly Despoil, Swiftly Plunder; for before the child shall know how to call for his father and mother, one shall take the power of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria in the presence of the king of Assyria. God is with us. Know this, O Gentiles, and be defeated. Give ear, all you to the very ends of the earth. Be defeated although you are strong, for even if you should be strong again, you will be defeated again. BRETHREN, God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say: You are My Son, today I have begotten You? And again: I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son? registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife,a who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold,a an angel of the Lord stood before πάντες ἀπογράφεσθαι, ἕκαστος εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν πόλιν. Μὴ φοβεῖσθε Ἰδοὺ γάρ, afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men! So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. And they came with haste and found κείµενον ἐν τῇ φάτνῃ. Καὶ ἦλθον σπεύσαντες, καὶ ἀνεῦρον, τήν τε Μαριὰµ καὶ τὸν Ἰωσήφ, καὶ τὸ βρέφος Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a κείµενον ἐν τῇ φάτνῃ. Ἰδόντες δὲ manger. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered λαληθέντος αὐτοῖς περὶ τοῦ παιδίου τούτου, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύµασαν περὶ τῶν λαληθέντων ὑπὸ τῶν Ποιµένων πρὸς αὐτούς, ἡ δὲ Μαριὰµ πάντα συνετήρει τὰ ῥήµατα ταῦτα, συµβάλλουσα ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ them in her heart. Then the shepherds αὐτῆς. Καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν οἱ ποιµένες, returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them. δοξάζοντες καὶ αἰνοῦντες τὸν Θεὸν ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἷς ἤκουσαν καὶ εἶδον, καθὼς ἐλαλήθη πρὸς αὐτούς.
