Thoughts for the New Year - A Time for Renewal The first day of the New Year is a traditional time we evaluate our past and set new goals for the coming year. Often we couch these as resolutions. We commit to losing weight, exercising more, improving our business and so forth. We might even commit ourselves to reading the Scriptures every day or making a commitment to daily prayer or regularly attending church and participating the the fasts and sacraments regularly. These efforts to seek to better our life physically and spiritually are important. Yet there are only a few such resolutions that last more than a few weeks. Why is this? Simply because we don't set out to make a habit out of what we commit to, making them part of our normal life routine. We are so influenced by our culture that we expect instant results. We are impatient, too used to comfort, and quickly tire of things that require discipline and hard work. But if we truly seek to be an Orthodox Christian we must do both of these. This is what the Orthodox way of life is all about. Our spiritual growth does not come without effort and discipline. This is how the apostle Peter puts it: Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love (2 Peter 1:5-7). Being an Orthodox Christian is about a way of life. We must seek to live in a way that we become the aroma of Christ to our surroundings (2 Cor 2:15). This means that we must develop a presence that influences others by our way of living and acting. This is a good time to review the following nine principles of an Orthodox Way of life and reflect on our own life style. asking what changes do I need to make to improve my aroma. 1. Praying Daily: Have a regular prayer rule that includes morning and evening prayer. 2. Worshiping and Participating in Sacraments: Attend and participate in the Divine Liturgy receiving Holy Communion regularly as well as regular participation in Confession. 3. Honoring the Liturgical Cycle of the Church: Follow the seasons of the church and participate in the fasts and feasts of the Church. 4. Using the Jesus Prayer: Repeat the Holy name whenever possible throughout the day or night. 5. Slowing Down and Ordering Your Life: Set priorities and reduce the stress and friction caused by a hurried life. 6. Being Watchful: Give full attention to what you are doing at the moment. 7. Taming the Passions: Overcome your habits, attachment to your likes and dislikes, and learn to practice the virtues.. Putting Others First: Free yourself from your selfishness and find joy in helping others. 8. Spiritual Fellowship: Spend time regularly with other Orthodox Christians for support and inspiration.: 9. Reading the Scriptures and Holy Fathers: Be inspired by the lessons of the Holy Scriptures, the wisdom of the Holy Fathers and the lives of the Saints of the Church. The starting point is always prayer coupled with regular participation in the Divine Liturgy and regular preparation and partaking of Holy Communion and attending the weekly Bible Classes. Fasting and the practice of the Jesus prayer can help build the necessary discipline and a attitude of repentance where we are constantly asking for God s mercy and help. If you seek spiritual enrichment in the coming year, then don't let yourself fall into a dull slumber of inattention to what really matters. Engage yourself in your spiritual development and allow the Holy Spirit to transform you from the inside out. Don t seek instant results from God like he was an ATM machine. Seek and thirst after him. Don t fret about how distant He seems. Commit yourself to live the life He has provided for you through His Church. The Church is given to us for our benefit. It outlines for us how we can become self-disciplined and gain His help to transform our lives so that we truly live in Him and He in us as the Scripture says. May God enlighten you and bring you many Blessings in the Coming New Year. 3

*************************************************************************** The Theophany of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ January 6 About the beginning of our Lord's thirtieth year, John the Forerunner, who was some six months older than Our Savior according to the flesh, and had lived in the wilderness since his childhood, received a command from God and came into the parts of the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto the remission of sins. Then our Savior also came from Galilee to the Jordan, and sought and received baptism though He was the Master and John was but a servant. Whereupon, there came to pass those marvelous deeds, great and beyond nature: the Heavens were opened, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove upon Him that was being baptized and the voice was heard from the Heavens hearing witness that this was the beloved Son of God, now baptized as a man (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:1-22). From these events the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the great mystery of the Trinity were demonstrated. It is also from this that the present feast is called "Theophany," that is, the divine manifestation, God's appearance among men. On this venerable day the sacred mystery of Christian baptism was inaugurated; henceforth also began the saving preaching of the Kingdom of the Heavens. Apolytikion of Holy Theophany Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world. Kontakion of Holy Theophany You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light." 6

The Tradition of the Vasilopita The tradition of baking and cutting a special "pita" (which can mean a loaf of bread, a cake, or even a pie) each year on January 1st is observed in honor of our holy father Basil the Great, archbishop of Caesarea in Cappodocia-- hence its name "Vasilopita" meaning "St. Basil's Bread." This tradition is observed in both parish churches and in the homes of the faithful. What is the meaning of this tradition and how did it begin? For centuries upon centuries, parents, grandparents and godparents have related the following to Orthodox children about St. Basil and the Vasilopita. One year, during a time of terrible famine, the emperor levied a sinfully excessive tax upon the people of Caesarea. The tax was such a heavy burden upon the already impoverished people that to avoid debtors' prison each family had to relinquish its few remaining coins and pieces of jewelry, including precious family heirlooms. Learning of this injustice upon his flock, St. Basil the Great, the archbishop of Caesarea, took up his bishop's staff and the book of the holy Gospels and came to his people's defense by fearlessly calling the emperor to repentance. By God's grace, the emperor did repent! He canceled the tax and instructed his tax collectors to turn over to St. Basil all of the chests containing the coins and jewelry which had been paid as taxes by the people of Caesarea. But now St. Basil was faced with the daunting and impossible task of returning these thousands of coins and pieces of jewelry to their rightful owners. After praying for a long time before the icons of our Master Christ and His All-Holy Mother, St. Basil had all the treasures baked into one huge pita. He then called all the townspeople to prayer at the cathedral, and, after Divine Liturgy, he blessed and cut the pita, giving a piece to each person. Miraculously, each owner received in his piece of Vasilopita his own valuables. They all joyfully returned home, giving thanks to God who had delivered them from abject poverty and to their good and holy bishop St. Basil the Great! In remembrance of that miracle wrought by God as a result of St. Basil's love and defense of his people, Orthodox Christians have observed the tradition of the Vasilopita each year on January 1st-- the date on which St. Basil reposed in the Lord in the year 379. In some places the Vasilopita is prepared as a loaf of rich bread (like that used for Artoklasia), while in other places it takes the form of a spicy sheet cake (without frosting). But no matter what form a Vasilopita may take, they all have one thing in common-- each contains a single coin. After placing the bread dough or cake batter in the proper baking pan, the baker makes with the foil-wrapped coin the sign of the Cross over it, closes his/her eyes, and then secretly places it into the unbaked Vasilopita. After the Vasilopita is baked and cooled, it is blessed and cut following Divine Liturgy for the feast of St. Basil on January 1st. Κυριακή προ των Φώτων Κυριακή προ των Φώτων η σημερινή και το Ευαγγελικό ανάγνωσμα αποτελεί την αρχή του Ευαγγελίου του Ευαγγελιστή Μάρκου. Μέσα από αυτό γίνεται αναφορά στην αρχή του χαρμόσυνου μηνύματος για τον Ιησού Χριστό, το οποίο αναγγέλλει ο Ιωάννης ο Βαπτιστής. Μας παρουσιάζει τον ερχομό του Ιωάννη ο οποίος έχει ως στόχο να προετοιμάσει το δρόμο από τον οποίο θα περάσει ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Γίνεται ακόμη αναφορά στον τρόπο που προετοιμάζει το δρόμο αλλά και στον τρόπο με τον οποίο ζούσε.ο Ιωάννης ο Βαπτιστής ήταν γιος του Ζαχαρία και της Ελισάβετ. Ήταν ο τελευταίος από τους προφήτες και ο μεγαλύτερος των προφητών. Ζούσε στην έρημο με άσκηση και μεγάλη εγκράτεια. Φορούσε ένα ρούχο φτιαγμένο από τρίχες καμήλας και στη μέση του είχε μια δερμάτινη ζώνη. Τρεφόταν από ακρίδες και άγριο μέλι από αγριομέλισσες. Η ακρίδες είναι: είτε η ακρίδες διαφόρων άγριων χόρτων που βλαστούνε στην περιοχή, ή τα γνωστά έντομα τα οποία χρησιμοποιούν και οι Βεδουίνοι που ζουν στην περιοχή μέχρι σήμερα, τα οποία ξηραίνουν και μετά τα τρώνε. Σαν κύριο έργο του Ο Ιωάννης ο Πρόδρομος είχε την προετοιμασία των ανθρώπων έτσι ώστε να είναι έτοιμοι για να δεχθούν τον Μεσσία. Η αναμονή του Μεσσία την εποχή εκείνη ήταν κάτι το αναμενόμενο. Η φθορά και η ανηθικότητα κυριαρχούσε στην ζωή των ανθρώπων. Η εμφάνιση του Ιωάννου και το κήρυγμα του, που ήταν κήρυγμα μετανοίας, αποτελούσε δείχτη προς τον οποίο θα στρέφονταν οι άνθρωποι ώστε να προετοιμαστούν για τον ερχομό του Μεσσία ο οποίος θα έφερνε μια πραγματικά νέα εποχή για ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα. Οι συνοπτικοί Ευαγγελιστές όταν μας μιλούν για τον Ιωάννη μας υπενθυμίζουν το σχετικό χωρίο από τον προφήτη Μαλαχία «ούτος εστί περί ου γέγραπται ιδού εγώ αποστέλλω τον άγγελον μου προ προσώπου σου, ος κατασκευάσει την οδόν σου εμπροσθέν σου» (Μαλαχ. γ, 1). Αυτό γίνεται έτσι ώστε να φανερωθεί η εκ Θεού αποστολή του Ιωάννη, για να ετοιμάσει την οδό του Κυρίου. Ο ίδιος ο Ιωάννης διακηρύσσει ότι έρχεται ύστερα από μένα αυτός που είναι πιο ισχυρός και εγώ δεν είμαι άξιος να σκύψω και να λύσω το λουρί από τα υποδήματα του. Εγώ σας βάφτισα με νερό, εκείνος όμως θα σας βαφτίσει με Άγιο Πνεύμα. Την μεγαλύτερη μαρτυρία για τον Ιωάννη μας την δίνει ο ίδιος ο Χριστός ο οποίος μας λέγει: «αμήν λέγω υμίν, ουκ εγήγερται εν γεννητοίς γυναικών μείζων Ιωάννου του Βαπτιστού», δηλαδή σας βεβαιώνω πως μάνα δε γέννησε ως τώρα άνθρωπο πιο μεγάλο από τον Ιωάννη το Βαπτιστή. (Ματ. 11,11). H εμφάνιση και το κήρυγμα του Προδρόμου ήταν μια πρόσκληση προς την ανθρωπότητα για μετάνοια. Καλούσε τους ανθρώπους να καθαρίσουν τις ψυχές τους από την κακία και την αμαρτία. Είχε γίνει οδοδείχτης που προετοίμαζε τους ανθρώπους, δείχνοντας τους το δρόμο προς τον Ιησού Χριστό. Δεν προσπαθούσε κηρύσσοντας με διάφορα καλά λόγια να ικανοποιήσει τις διάφορες τάξεις ανθρώπων που ερχόντουσαν να τον ακούσουν. Κήρυττε και έλεγχε με αυστηρά λόγια τους πάντες που παρέβαιναν το Νόμο του Θεού χωρίς να υπολογίζει τίποτα. Φτάνει στο σημείο να ελέγχει και τον ίδιο τον Ηρώδη ο οποίος είχε παράνομο δεσμό με τη γυναίκα του αδελφού του. Ελέγχει με τόση αυστηρότητα, μήπως και καταφέρει να τους ξυπνήσει μέσα από το λήθαργο της αμαρτίας που είχαν περιέλθει. Η υπόδειξη αυτή του Προδρόμου προς τον αληθινό Μεσσία τον Ιησού Χριστό αποτελεί και για μας σήμερα ένα επίκαιρο μήνυμα. Η απομάκρυνση του στόχου της ζωής μας από τον Χριστό και ο προσανατολισμός του σε οικονομικές και κοινωνικές επιτυχίες μας έχουν οδηγήσει σε τραγικές απογοητεύσεις και αδιέξοδα που είναι σε όλους μας ορατά. Η αρχή του νέου έτους πριν δύο μέρες, ας αποτελέσει την αρχή την οποία θα βάλει ο καθένας μας στη ζωή του έτσι ώστε να στραφούμε προς τον Χριστό τον οποίο μας υπέδειξε ο Πρόδρομος και αποτελεί τον αληθινό Σωτήρα μας. Αμήν. 10

Ναι! Υπάρχει Άη - Βασίλης! Ο ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΟΣ ΑΓΙΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΣ Ο ΜΕΓΑΣ, ο Προστάτης των φτωχών!!! Ευλογία φέρνει, όχι παιχνίδια - δεν είναι άγιος του εμπορίου, αλλά του παραδείσου!... Ο Άγιός μας γεννήθηκε στην Νεοκαισαρεια του Πόντου το 330 μ.χ. (όλες οι περιοχές που αναφέρουμε ήταν κάποτε ελληνικές ενώ σήμερα ανήκουν στην επικράτεια της Τουρκίας), σπούδασε στην Αθήνα σε φιλοσοφικές σχολές μαζί με τον φίλο του Άγιο Γρηγόριο τον Θεολόγο [σημ.: ήταν μαθηματικός, γιατρός, δικηγόρος και (όπως θα λέγαμε σήμερα) φιλόλογος - και αργότερα έγινε μοναχός, ιερέας και επίσκοπος ("δεσπότης") της Καισάρειας] και πέθανε σε ηλικία 48 ετών τον Δεκέμβριο του 378 μ.χ. Κηδεύτηκε την 1η Ιανουαρίου του 379 μ.χ. και κάθε πρωτοχρονιά -όπως γνωρίζουμε- γιορτάζουμε την μνήμη του. Ο Αη Βασίλης στα 48 χρόνια που έζησε, έκαμε τόσα πολλά για τους ανθρώπους που η ιστορία τον ονόμασε ΜΕΓΑ όσο ακόμα ζούσε. Ας δούμε όμως τι έκανε ο Άγιος Βασίλης κι έγινε Μεγας. Πρώτα πρώτα μοίρασε την περιουσία του στους φτωχούς, δεν κράτησε τίποτα για τον εαυτό του! Από πολύ νέος γύμναζε τον εαυτό του στο πνεύμα και τον έβαζε σε σκληραγωγίες και, όπως λένε, άλλο δρόμο δεν γνώριζε εκτός αυτόν που οδηγούσε στο πανεπιστήμιο και στην εκκλησία. Σε μεγάλες επιδημίες που ταλαιπωρούσαν τον λαό αυτός ήταν παρών και βοηθούσε σωματικά και ψυχικά διδάσκοντας την πίστη του Χριστού [ήταν και γιατρός]. Ο Άη Βασίλης ήταν πολύ αυστηρός με αυτούς που ξέφευγαν από την σωστή πίστη, έλεγε και έγραφε την αλήθεια θαρραλέα και μάλιστα δεν δίστασε να ελεγξει ακόμη και αυτοκράτορες. Συμπλήρωσε με ευχές την Θεία Λειτουργία που ακουμε αυτές τις ημέρες στην εκκλησία και φέρει το όνομά του ("Λειτουργία Αγίου Βασιλείου"). Οι "ευχές" αυτές είναι μεγάλες & σπουδαίες προσευχές που λέει ο Ιερέας χαμηλόφωνα μέσα στο Ιερό, ενώ ο ψάλτης ψάλλει - με αυτέ τις προσευχές γίνεται η θεία Μετάληψη & τα άλλα σημαντικά πράγματα μέσα στη λειτουργία. Η λειτουργία του αγ. Βασιλείου γίνεται 10 φορές το χρόνο: την 1η Ιανουαρίου (όπου γιορτάζεται και η μνήμη του), τις πρώτες πέντε Κυριακές της Μ. Τεσσαρακοστής, τις παραμονές των Χριστουγέννων και των Θεοφανείων, την Μ. Πέμπτη και το Μ. Σάββατο. Τις άλλες μέρες γίνεται η λειτουργία που έχει γράψει ένας άλλος μεγάλος άγιος των γραμμάτων & της φιλανθρωπίας, ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος. Επίσης, ο Άγ. Βασίλης έγραψε πολλά βιβλία για την καθοδήγηση των χριστιανών και ίδρυσε πολλά μοναστήρια, όπου αρκετοί μαθητές του αφιερώθηκαν στον Θεό. Το πιο σπουδαίο του έργο όμως ήταν η οργάνωση της ελεημοσύνης και φιλανθρωπίας στην επαρχία του: έφτιαξε κοντά στην Καισάρεια μια ολόκληρη πόλη από φιλανθρωπικά ιδρύματα, γηροκομεία, νοσοκομεία, ξενοδοχεία, ορφανοτροφεία κ.α. Ιδρυσε και καθιέρωσε την διανομή αγαθών, τρόφιμα, ρούχα, χρήματα και κάθε είδους βοήθεια σε φτωχές οικογένειες, άπορους κ.λ.π. Η πόλη αυτή [μετά το θάνατό του] ονομάστηκε Βασιλειάδα. Φανταστείτε τι ανακούφιση θα ένιωθαν τότε οι φτωχοί, τα ορφανά, οι γέροι, οι ταξιδιώτες, η Καισάρεια είχε γίνει μια μεγάλη οικογένεια με πατέρα τον άγιο Βασίλειο, τον επίσκοπό της. Τον αγαπούσαν τόσο πολύ που στην κηδεία του σημειώθηκαν λιποθυμίες και θανατοι, τόσες χιλιάδες κόσμος που συγκεντρώθηκε! Αυτός ήταν ο Αη Βασίλης από την Καισαρεία που πάντα θα ζει μέσα στις καρδιές μας και θα μας θυμίζει με το έργο του ότι πρέπει να είμαστε όλοι εμείς οι άνθρωποι μικροί και μεγάλοι αγαπημένοι. Ενώ ζούσε ο άγιος Βασίλης, ο αδελφός του, ο άγιος Γρηγόριος της Νύσσης, είδε το εξής όραμα: Ηταν νύχτα, όταν έγινε μία θεία λάμψη ( έλλαμψη ) από φως, την ώρα που (ο Βασίλειος) προσευχόταν στο σπίτι. Το φως εκείνο ήταν άυλο (άκτιστο) και, με τη δύναμη του Θεού, πλημμύρισε (καταφώτισε) όλο το οίκημα, χωρίς να το ανάβει κάποιο εύφλεκτο υλικό!!! Ας έχουμε την Ευχή του Μεγάλου αυτού Αγίου της Εκκλησίας μας 12

It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN O God, our heavenly Father, Who loves mankind and is a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant(s) (names), for whom I humbly pray to You, and whom I commend to Your gracious care and protection. O God, be their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love and fear, doing Your will in all things. Give them grace and mercy so that they may be patient, hard working, tireless, devout, and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption, and direct them in the way of salvation, through the goodness of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and the prayers of His Holy Mother and the blessed Saints. GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. We are currently reading a book that studies the similarities and differences between Orthodoxy and other Christian confessions and faiths. There is always room for Q&A. This group is aimed at both those who are interested in joining the Orthodox Church, as well as Orthodox who want to learn more about their faith. Everything is in English.
