Apostle Timothy of the Seventy The Holy Apostle Timothy was from the Lycaonian city of Lystra in Asia Minor. Saint Timothy was converted to Christ in the year 52 by the holy Apostle Paul (June 29). When the Apostles Paul and Barnabas first visited the cities of Lycaonia, Saint Paul healed one crippled from birth. Many of the inhabitants of Lystra then believed in Christ, and among them was the future Saint Timothy, his mother Eunice and grandmother Loida (Lois) (Acts 14:6-12; 2 Tim. 1:5). The seed of faith, planted in Saint Timothy s soul by the Apostle Paul, brought forth abundant fruit. He became Saint Paul s disciple, and later his constant companion and co-worker in the preaching of the Gospel. The Apostle Paul loved Saint Timothy and in his Epistles called him his beloved son, remembering his devotion and fidelity with gratitude. He wrote to Timothy: You have followed my teaching, way of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, and patience (2 Tim. 3:10-11). The Apostle Paul appointed Saint Timothy as Bishop of Ephesus, where the saint remained for fifteen years. Finally, when Saint Paul was in prison and awaiting martyrdom, he summoned his faithful friend, Saint Timothy, for a last farewell (2 Tim. 4:9). Saint Timothy ended his life as a martyr. The pagans of Ephesus celebrated a festival in honor of their idols, and used to carry them through the city, accompanied by impious ceremonies and songs. Saint Timothy, zealous for the glory of God, attempted to halt the procession and reason with the spiritually blind idol- 2 19

Sunday, January 22, 2017 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You. Apolytikion Goodness and kindness having been taught, and always in alertness, having vested yourself with pure conscience befitting the sacred, you derived from the Chosen Vessel the mysterious; and having kept the faith, you completed the same course, O holy Clergy-Martyr apostle Timothy, Intercede with Christ our God, for the salvation of our souls. Apolytikion Your loyal martyr, Lord, while contending for you, the crown of incorruption he earned for himself, from you the God of all of us for armed with your might, he defeated the tyrants, and crushed all the demons and their powerless presumption. Through his intercessions, O Christ our God, we pray to you to save our souls. St. Vasilios 1 st Mode Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father, intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. Seasonal Kontakion in the First Mode Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One. EPISTLE READINGS St. Paul's First Letter to Timothy 4:9-15 Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 2. Psalm 27.9,1 O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. TIMOTHY, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. 16 5

GOSPEL READING 15th Sunday of Luke The Gospel according to Luke 19:1-10 At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost." 6 15

USING KNEELERS IN CHURCH Please exercise care when lowering your kneeler in Church. If you are using your foot to lower the kneeler please have your foot support the kneeler until it gently touches the floor. The multiple banging of the kneelers is a great distraction at the most solemn moment of the Divine Liturgy. Thank you for your attention to this issue. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. JOIN DCN. MARKOS AFTER LITURGY for AGAPE CIRCLE AGAPE means REAL LOVE. Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches that AGAPE is what life is all about and AGAPE is what GOD is all about. For 5 Sundays in a row after Liturgy starting January 29 until February 26, Deacon Markos will lead a small group called "Agape Circle" in the conference room. We will explore our experiences of real love and consider how we can support one another to increase AGAPE in our lives. If you are interested in being a part of AGAPE CIRCLE please contact Dcn. Markos at 617-501-1083 or markanickolas@gmail.com and meet with him after Liturgy on Sunday to find out more. Proverb 19:17 The Church School students are asking for donations to help them fill Blessing Bags. These bags are distributed to the homeless in our area on a monthly basis. We are especially in need of cold weather items. Winter socks Flashlight & batteries Hats First Aid kits Gloves (Men s sizes L & XL) Vitamin C lozenges Scarves Chapstick Hand & feet warmers Antibacterial wipes or gel Tissues (individual packets) Food items: $5.00 Gift cards Granola, Protein & Breakfast bars Dunkin Donuts Peanut butter crackers McDonalds Nuts/Trail mix CVS/Walgreens Please return any donations to boxes set up in the Educational Center foyer or to the Church School office or any classroom. Thank you for your generosity. VOTIVE CANDLE SAFETY Votive Candle Safety We have noticed that increasingly the faithful have been lighting candles and placing them in front of the Iconostasis (icon screen). We have also noticed that more and more of the faithful are having their votive candles brought into the Holy Altar. Because of the number of votive candles, twice we have had wax spills on the chairs in the Altar. Furthermore, we often find that candles have been left burning in the Altar and in front of the Iconostasis and this is a fire hazard. The decision of the Parish Council, along with Father Chris, is that votive candles are to remain in the Narthex of the church where they remain in safety glass in case the plastic insert catches fire and not brought into the Altar or placed in front of the Iconostasis. We thank you for your cooperation. 10 11
