ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ Δ ΝΗΣΤΕΙΩΝ Sunday of St. John Climacus Μια άλλη µεγάλη ασκητική προσωπικότητα τιµάται αυτή την άγια περίοδο από την Εκκλησία µας, ο Αγιος Ιωάννης ο συγγραφέας του περιφήµου βιβλίου της «Κλίµακος», το οποίο γράφηκε για να αποτελεί πολύτιµο οδηγό ηµών των πιστών στη δύσκολη πνευµατική µας πορεία και τον ασίγαστο παθοκτόνο αγώνα µας. Σύµφωνα µε το ιερό συναξάρι του, γεννήθηκε στην Παλαιστίνη περί το 523. Από πολύ µικρός αγαπούσε την άσκηση και γιʹ αυτό νέος όντας, αποσύρθηκε στην έρηµο του Σινά, όπου έζησε ως ερηµίτης για δεκαεννιά χρόνια. Κατόπιν εγκαταβίωσε στη Μονή του Θωλά, στην οποία πέρασε σαράντα χρόνια. Ήταν σοφός άνθρωπος και προπαντός µεγάλος ασκητής, εφάµιλλος του µεγάλου Αντωνίου, αγίου Ευθυµίου και αγίου Σάββα. Γύρω από τον µεγάλο αυτό δάσκαλο ασκητή συγκεντρώθηκαν πολλές χιλιάδες µοναχοί, παίρνοντας από αυτόν µαθήµατα πνευµατικού αγώνα. Για να µπορούν οι µοναχοί να έχουν καταγραµµένες τις σοφές διδαχές και παραινέσεις του, τις κατέγραψε στο προαναφερόµενο βιβλίο του, το οποίο ονόµασε «Κλίµαξ», δηλαδή νοητή σκάλα, που ανεβάζει κλιµακωτά τον ασκούµενο άνθρωπο στην κορυφή των αρετών. Τα υπέροχα κεφάλαια του βιβλίου της «Κλίµακος» είναι ένα από τα προσφιλή και ωφέληµα αναγνώσµατα των πιστών αυτή την κατανυκτική περίοδο. Οι σοφές παραινέσεις του αγίου Ιωάννου αποτελούν πολύτιµο πνευµατικό οδηγό για κλιµακωτή κατάκτηση αρετών, ώστε να υποδεχτούν τον αναστάντα Κύριο καθαροί από τους ρύπους της αµαρτίας και τη φθορά του κακού.

BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, ʺSurely I will bless you and multiply you.ʺ And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. There are so many team members here at HCS who are defying the odds and making the extraordinary happen each and every day. These folks are working to make our goals a reality by calculating their winning game plan, busting through comfort zones, making unpopular decisions, having difficult (yet kind and powerful) conversations and fighting windmills to make AWESOME things happen no matter how impossible the odds or rocky the roads seems. Together, we are building a powerful foundation for our school and for our community. It is only with children at their desks, that we can sustain our stellar instructional program perpetuating strong Hellenic Roots, American Ideals & our Orthodox Faith, and retain Inspirational Teachers.
