FATHER JOHN AFENDOULIS TO VISIT HOLY TRINITY Many parishioners may remember Father John Afendoulis when he served Holy Trinity Cathedral in New Orleans as a pastoral assistant, a position that he also held in the Greek Orthodox Churches of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Long Beach, California; and Pasadena, California, between 1986 and 1999. He is a graduate of UCLA with a double major in Ethnomusicology (Byzantine Chant) and History (Byzantine and Ottoman Periods). In 2003 he moved to Thessaloniki, Greece, and conducted independent research under Professor Maria Alexandrou at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he met Adina Amariei, also a student at the University. They were married in her home town Iasi, Romania, in 2007. The following year Father John entered Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, completing his MDiv in May 2011. He was ordained to the priesthood by Metropolitan Nicholas in August 2011 and received his first assignment at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist in Salinas, California. Presently, he serves Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in San Angelo, Texas. Father John and Presbytera Adina have a son, Auxentios, who was born in December 2011. They await the arrival of their second child this August. Father John will have Vespers Service this Tuesday, April 29, at 6:30 pm in the Cathedral. Although it is pending on receiving permission from the Metropolis of Atlanta, the community is planning on the service, as well as a Coffee and Pot Luck Dessert reception to follow in the Coffee Room. Everyone is invited to attend.

150TH ANNIVERSARY The 150th Anniversary Committee will meet on Thursday, May 8, at 7:00 pm, in the Hellenic Cultural Center. Plans for the celebratory events scheduled through the weekend of October 10-12 will be discussed. All members of the community interested in helping with the 150th Anniversary Celebration events are welcome to attend. DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE Thank you to everyone, who supported the AHEPA Family Palm Sunday Luncheon on April 13. Through this event and other fundraising ventures during the year, AHEPA and the Daughters of Penelope continue to support Holy Trinity, the local community, and various local, national, and international charities. Today, the Daughters of Penelope Monthly Meeting will take place in the Coffee Room. Refreshment hostesses are Maria Anastasiou, Popi Kountouroudas, and Koula Vennis. Meeting discussions will include the upcoming District Convention June 13-15 at the Southshore Harbor Resort near Houston, the Supreme Convention in New Orleans July 19-26 at the Sheraton Hotel Canal Street, and the election of Delegates to represent our Chapter at both conventions. EDUCATION, CULTURAL, AND YOUTH MINISTRIES MEETING The Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee will meet on Monday, May 12, 2014, in the boardroom at 7:00 pm. Members are asked to attend. JUNIOR GREEK FESTIVAL DANCERS The Junior Greek Festival Dancers resumed practice yesterday, Saturday, April 26. Although there is no practice today since there is no Greek School, practice will continue next Saturday, May 3, beginning at 10:30 am and lasting until 12:00 pm and Sunday, May 4, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Plant for the planet. Strengthen your garden s resistance to pests by planting resilient plants. As we continue to enjoy the beautiful spring season, do your part and make a difference. Historic Kouvouklion in Narthex In 1885, William Coleman edited the Historical Sketch Book of New Orleans. In this publication included in the account of the Greek church of the Holy Trinity on Dolhonde near Barracks is a citation on our historic kouvouklion. This important documentation that describes our liturgical artifact, venerated now for over 100 years, also depicts our Holy Friday service. The historic kouvouklion, is in the Cathedral Narthex for viewing. Here is the citation: The church consists of a small square room, with vaulted ceiling; its furniture, two reading desks, a baptismal font, the ark, a large cross bearing the crucified Saviour, and two candle stands. The ark resembles a bier supporting a miniature two-story Greek temple. On the upper part is the story of Christ s condemnation, agony, last supper, and crucifixion. Most notable is the first little picture, wherein Pontius Pilate is to be seen literally washing his hands of the whole affair. After a few more chants and reading of Scriptures, the holy ark, preceded by the priest, is borne out by four strong men, all chanting the Kyrie Eleison, Lord, have mercy upon us. A long reading of the Scriptures follows, interrupted by admonitions in modern Greek from his reverence to his delinquent clerks. THE EPISTLE Acts of the Apostles 5:12-20 In those days, many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life." THE GOSPEL John 20:19-31 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to Him: "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
