As it is also known to most of you, our Holy Archdiocese has dedicated the year 2005 to the family. Thanksgiving, from the very first time that it was celebrated, was a family Holiday. Even during the dramatic and difficult times, that the first Pilgrims endured in order to have religious freedom in this blessed Land of America, they were offered a warm meal and the sense that we are all one family. In contemporary society, family values are still of great importance, as they have always been. As Christian individuals, we are raised with the values that derive from the Bible, the source of our faith. We want to practice these values and accept the guidance and inspiration that comes from the Bible.

Orthros and Divine Liturgy 9-11 a.m. Thursday 15th Saints Eleftherios and Anthia the Great Martyrs. Orthros and Divine Liturgy 9-11 a.m. By Very Reverend Alexander Kile, Archimandrite (Continued from page 1) ance we build up our characters, raise our children and our families. Unfortunately today in our American society, organized individuals fight the name of God, prayer to God and everything that has to do with religion. Don t they know, these atheist individuals, that our American Nation was first built for religious freedom by the pilgrims who came from Europe persecuted for their beliefs? There is even an organized effort to remove the words in God we trust from the bank notes and from our national anthem. We recently had an incident in the town of New Brunswick, with a coach who wanted to have a prayer at the dinner with his players before a game, but some of the parents complained and made him stop praying. The coach resigned. It is apparent that organized atheism is attacking but we should not give it the opportunity to remove the Holy name of God from American society. It is the holy faith of our fathers who built this nation and made it what it is today. All the atheists claims and legislative fights to remove God s name from American symbols are indeed an insult to all Americans, from all different religions, who believe in God. Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to thank God for His many blessings and to take a special note of our manner of living and consider if it is in fact in line with that which Divine Providence intended it to be. Thanksgiving Day offers us also the opportunity to appreciate the value, the joy and the beauty which the uniting of our members of our family around the common table gives us. With these paternal thoughts I wish you and your beloved family members a Blessed and Joyous Thanksgiving Day. With love in Christ Your Pastor V.Rev. Alexander Kile Archimandrite SAINT GEORGE Page 3 VOICE OF ST GEORGE: CURRENT ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS AND A NOTE FROM THE VOICE COMMITTEE In this issue of the Voice of St George you can find updates on the budget of our church (as of September 30, 2005) and on the status of the stewardship program (as of October 31, 2005) on pages 18-19, articles on past and upcoming events, and announcements from our community organizations. εν πρέπει να δώσουμε την ευκαιρία σε κανένα να αφαιρέσει SAINT ANDREW THE FIRSTτο όνομα του Θεού και τα σύμβολα της CALLED (NOVEMBER 30) Χριστιανικής μας Πίστης από την ζωή μας. Please don t hesitate to come and offer a little or a lot of your time for the benefit of this beautiful community. If you are interested, you can call the church office or talk personally to me. Page 6 RELIGIOUS INFORMATION During the Sacrament of Baptism, the Orthodox church requires that the Godparent is an Orthodox Christian; why? The reason is very simple. The Godparent (Anadochos) is the person who gives his/her faith to the person who is going to become a Christian. We are an Orthodox Christian Church, so the person who is going to give his/her faith should be an Orthodox Christian. It is this Orthodox Christian person who, on behalf of the child, in the Narthex of the church will renounce Satan, join himself/herself with Christ and recite the Creed of the Orthodox Faith. In the main part of the church and during the main part of the baptism, it is the Orthodox person who anoints the child with oil and receives him/her as he/she emerges from the baptismal font after being baptized. Knowing that we have many interdenominational marriages, we often have parents who want a family member or a close friend to become the Godparent. We accommodate this need by allowing the person who is not Orthodox to stand next to the Godparent, hold the baby, undress and dress the baby and hold the candle at the conclusion of the Sacrament. In an interdenominational wedding between persons of Christian Canonical Faith is the non Orthodox person required to become Orthodox? The plain answer is no. Our church allows interdenominational weddings with persons of only a few Canonical Christian denominations. A person of a Canonical Christian denomination can marry in the Orthodox Church with an Orthodox person even if they do not become Orthodox himself /herself. There are denominations that call themselves Christians but are not recognized by the Orthodox Church. For example: Latter Day Saints, Jehovah Witnesses, Seven Day Adventists, Assembly of God, Sweden Borgian, Unitarian, Mormons and DO YOU HAVE A PAYROLL DEDUCTION FOR UNITED WAY? others. Persons of these faiths, cannot take place in a Sacrament in the Orthodox Church. The person of another Canonical denomination who is married to an Orthodox person cannot receive communion in the Orthodox Church, cannot become a Godparent or Koumbaros (sponsor in the Sacrament of Marriage) and he/she cannot be buried by the Orthodox Church unless he/she becomes Orthodox. Why does the priest consult the mother of a newly baptized child not to bathe the child (or person) for three days? This is a written and not an oral tradition of our church. During the Sacrament of Baptism another Sacrament is given also. It is the Sacrament of Chrismation that a person receives once in their life and it is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has to stay in the newly illuminated person for three days. On the third day, the Godparent comes to the house and bathes the child in a basin and puts new clothes on him or her as a symbol of the new life that the child is starting. It is important to collect the water from the first wash and throw it either in the ocean or a river, or on the ground - but on a place that does not get stepped on. This is done as a reverence to the Holy Chrismation. If the newly baptized person is an adult, and if it is possible, he/she can go to the ocean and submerge themselves in the water before bathing normally at home. Page 10 Page 15 The St. George Sunday School commenced its 2005-2006 school year on September 25. This followed an all-inclusive Orientation Meeting, which was held on September 19. It is at the latter that new faculty members were introduced, classrooms were assigned, enrollment estimates were communicated, new books and supplies were distributed, procedural matters were discussed, and lesson planning and instructional information was communicated. The Sunday School enrollment this year totals 327 students in Grades Cradle through Teen Rap. This total includes the new registration of 32 students. It is important to recognize that the Sunday School maintains an open registration all year. Thus, additional students join classes throughout the year. Curriculum development has progressed well at the Archdiocese Department of Religious Education in Brookline, Massachusetts. Since 1989 they have consistently published related material to develop the Pre-School to Grade Eight curriculum. This year, the first volume of the Cana curriculum, named for the first miracle of Christ at the wedding in Cana, has been published and will be taught in our combined Eighth and Ninth Grades. Additionally, this text, Rejoicing in One Lord Jesus Christ, will be distributed to the teachers in Grades Four through Seven in order to reinforce their religious education. The pursuit of Archdiocese Certification for our teachers continues. The handbook, a Program of Teacher Education and Certification, has been obtained for all our teachers, and the religious books needed to complete the required reading were purchased for the program by our Parent-Teacher Organization last year. Always of great concern is the evacuation of our building should an emergency occur. The EAP (Emergency Action Plan) continues to be implemented at St. George. This plan covers Fire Evacuation, Missing Child Alert, and Lockdown. We anticipate trial runs in the near future. Committee accomplishments thus far include a well-functioning fire alarm system, fully operative EXIT signs, and a visit by the Piscataway fire Marshall for in-house evaluation. The Presbytera Frances Pappas Scholarship, established by the Sunday School at the time of Presbytera s death in December of l998, remains a viable recognition of theological students from the state of New Jersey. Two scholarships may be awarded annually from funds now in a money market account Sunday School News Nea tou Kathchtikou Scoleiou which is maintained by the Sunday School but remains separate from Sunday School money. At the committee s discretion, deserving students from Holy Cross or St. Vladimir may be chosen to receive a $500 scholarship. The Committee would like to encourage anyone desiring to help Orthodox Christianity through its theological students to consider making a donation to this scholarship. Checks may be made payable to the Presbytera Frances Pappas Scholarship and sent to the church. Our St. George Sunday School teachers have historically been eager participants in seminars given for their growth. Thus, on Saturday, October 22, eight members of the Sunday School staff and two Youth Advisors traveled to Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Hamilton, New Jersey, and attended an excellent Youth Ministry Leadership Training Seminar presented by the Northern New Jersey Youth Committee of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey. The seminar was designed for GOYA Advisors, HOPE and JOY Coordinators, Coaches, Parents, Religious Educators, and Clergy. The theme of the seminar was R U READY? CREATIVE OUTREACH FOR TODAY S ORTHODOX KIDS. Featured presenters were the Rev. George Orfanakos, pastor of St. George in Clifton, New Jersey, who spoke on WHO We could become, Dr. Vasiliki Tsigas- Fotinis, Curriculum Coordinator, Department of Religious Education in Brookline, Massachusetts, who spoke on WHAT We Could Be Doing and the Rev. Basil C. Gikas, pastor of St. George in Hamilton, New Jersey, who spoke on WHERE We Could Be Going. Slowly convalescing from major cardiac surgery, Father Anthony Pappas is quietly savoring the messages of love sent to him by the parishioners of St. George as well as by the students and staff of the Sunday School. We would like to share with the parishioners of St. George what we consider our greatest coup. At the time of Father s hospitalization, the Sunday School students wanted to send flowers. Upon calling the hospital, we were told that no flowers were accepted for Father s room. However, they added, only through a member of the family would it be at all possible for flowers to be taken into Father s room. A call to Father s home was answered by his son Michael, who immediately assured us that he would be very pleased to carry the Sunday School students flowers into Father s room. And thus, our Sunday School basket of flowers was at Father s side during his initial hospitalization! ARCHBISHOP DEMETRIOS CONDEMNS HOSTILE DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST OUR ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE October 31, 2005 NEW YORK - Archbishop Demetrios of America has expressed his deepest sorrow and his strong and unequivocal condemnation for the most recent hostile demonstrations and threats against the holy center of world Orthodoxy, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, in Istanbul, Turkey. This latest assault took place last Thursday, October 28, when groups of Turkish nationalists and other extreme elements demonstrated in Phanar against the Ecumenical Patriarchate chanting slogans such as one night we ll come to the Phanar, go away Patriarch, Patriarch don t test our patience, take the Patriarchate and go to Greece, and the like. Before police intervened, the angry demonstrators reached the entrance to the Patriarchal compound, and placed a black wreath in front of the gate. SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM (NOVEMBER 13) CHRYSOSTOM John, golden-mouthed, of the poor, advocate, of God s presence even with two or three, advocate, driven out, again and again, at last driven out in chains to death. Would that I had a mouth with words like water flecked with light, shaded by alders, streamside alders, and a language with a word for that. - DELL HYMES Archbishop Demetrios in his statement of condemnation said, I express my deepest sorrow for the events that transpired outside of our Ecumenical Patriarchate last Thursday. The actions of these Turkish extremistsnationalists are appalling and condemnable in and by any civilized country. These are actions against a holy institution which survived and lives on through the centuries. It s an institution highly respected by the entire civilized world. These demonstrators are short changing themselves and Turkey, as they paint a picture of uncivilized, petty, narrow-minded people. As a Church and as Orthodox in America, we are in spirit and in prayer by the side of our Ecumenical Patriarchate, and we stand in full support with love and care towards our Mother Church as we are reassured that He Who has many times saved this Patriarchate and has protected it in difficult times will once again be next to our Ecumenical Patriarch and the Fathers of the Great Church of Christ and He will lead this crisis to a favorable result according to the teachings of our Lord, that God, will not break a bruised reed, and smoking flax He will not quench, till He sends forth justice to victory (Matt. 12:20). Apolytikion: The grace of your words illuminated the universe like a shining beacon. It amassed treasures of munificence in the world. It demonstrated the greatness of humility, teaching us by your own words; therefore, O Father John Chrysostom, intercede to Christ the Logos for the salvation of our souls. Kontakion: You received divine grace from Heaven, and by your own lips taught all to worship the One God in Trinity. All-blessed, venerable John Chrysostom, deservedly, we praise you for you are a teacher clearly revealing things divine.
