Μήνυμα Προέδρου κ. Βασίλη Ελοβάρη Συμπληρώσαμε κιόλας τέσσερις μήνες από την πρόσφατη ανάληψη καθηκόντων του νεοεκλεγμένου Προεδρείου, Διοικητικού και Εποπτικού Συμβουλίου της ΕΟΚΝΑ. Στο σύντομο αυτό χρονικό διάστημα, επιτεύχθηκαν αρκετοί στόχοι και σημειώθηκαν αξιόλογες επιτυχίες. Με έναρξη τον Σεπτέμβριο, πραγματοποιήθηκε το Δεύτερο Ελληνικό Πολιτιστικό Φεστιβάλ Αδελαΐδας «Οδύσσεια» διανύοντας τον μήνα Οκτώβρη και λήγοντας τον Νοέμβριο με το 6 ο Φεστιβάλ Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου, προσελκύοντας πλήθος φιλότεχνων και προσφέροντας ποιοτική ψυχαγωγία στην πόλη μας. Για την επιτυχή διεξαγωγή του φεστιβάλ «Οδύσσεια», αξίζει να αναγνωριστεί και να επαινεθεί το έργο και η αφοσίωση τόσο των επιμέρους μελών του Διοικητικού και Εποπτικού Συμβουλίου, η γενναιοδωρία των οικονομικών υποστηρικτών και στο πρόσωπο του Διευθύνοντος Σύμβουλου το προσωπικό της Κοινότητας, όσο και οι πολύτιμοι εθελοντές που συνεργάστηκαν με ανιδιοτέλεια στην υπηρεσία του ευρύτερου κοινού, συμπεριλαμβανομένου τριών νεαρών γυναικών, της Εβάνας Βλάσση, της Χλόης Κουράκη και της Άννας Μαρίας Ανδριτσάκη, οι οποίες με την δροσερή τους παρουσία διοχέτευσαν σε κάθε εκδήλωση πνοή νεανικού ενθουσιασμού. Με την διεκπεραίωση των εργασιών της αίθουσας εκδηλώσεων παραπλεύρως του Ι. Ναού Αγ. Νικολάου στο Thebarton, πραγματοποιήθηκε η πρώτη εκδήλωση στο κατάμεστο από κόσμο νέο χωλ, το Σάββατο 6 Οκτωβρίου 2007, σημειώνοντας εξαιρετική επιτυχία με την παρουσία διακεκριμένων πολιτικών και κυβερνητικών αξιωματούχων. Ένα εξίσου σημαντικό γεγονός της περιόδου αυτής, υπήρξε ο εορτασμός του Καθεδρικού Ι. Ναού των Παμμεγίστων Ταξιαρχών, στις 8 Νοεμβρίου 2007 απαρτιζόμενος από την πατροπαράδοτη δοξολογία ακολουθούμενη από πλούσιο γεύμα στην κοινοτική αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων, Ολύμπικ Χωλ. Ο φετινός εορτασμός σήμανε την 70 η επέτειο από την ίδρυση του ναού, που στάθηκε ορόσημο στην ιστορία της Ελληνικής παροικίας της Νότιας Αυστραλίας. Επιτυχία επίσης σημείωσαν ο εορτασμός της 34 ης Επετείου του Πολυτεχνείου, που διοργάνωσαν η Πολιτιστική και Σχολική Επιτροπή της ΕΟΚΝΑ, το 20 ο Eτήσιο Πανηγύρι του Ελληνικού Γηροκομείου του Ridleyton προσελκύοντας χιλιάδες συμπαροίκους, καθώς και η διάλεξη του κ. Γεώργιου Στασινάκη, Προέδρου της Διεθνούς Εταιρείας Φίλων Νίκου Καζαντζάκη, με αφορμή την 50 η επέτειο από το θάνατο του μεγάλου Κρητικού συγγραφέα, δύο εκδηλώσεις που επίσης έλαβαν χώρα στο Ολύμπικ Χωλ. Όμως, πέρα από τις καθημερινές υπηρεσίες και την δραστηριότητά της στον κοινωνικό τομέα, η Κοινότητα μερίμνησε για την διεξαγωγή Ράδιοεράνου, τον Σεπτέμβριο 2007, σε συνεργασία με το Ελληνικό Ραδιοφωνικό Πρόγραμμα 5ΕΒΙ FM και τους Ελληνικούς Ραδιοσταθμούς Ράδιο- Ένα και Ράδιο-Δορυφόρος, συγκεντρώνοντας ένα σεβαστό ποσό υπέρ των θυμάτων των καταστροφικών πυρκαγιών που έπληξαν πρόσφατα την Ελλάδα. Προσμένουμε πλέον την λήξη του έτους 2007, με ποικίλες εορταστικές, χριστουγεννιάτικες εκδηλώσεις και γεύματα προς τιμήν των ατόμων που αποτελούν τα στελέχη του οργανισμού μας, την ψυχή και το σώμα της Κοινότητάς μας, τους ακούραστους, πιστούς εθελοντές μας. Σε όλους σας αποτείνω έναν θερμό και εγκάρδιο χαιρετισμό με τις ειλικρινείς μου ευχαριστίες για την προσφορά και την δράση σας καθ όλη τη διάρκεια του 2007 που μας εγκαταλείπει, με την ευχή να επιδοθούμε στο κοινοτικό έργο, και του χρόνου με ανανεωμένη δύναμη και υγεία! Βασίλης Ελοβάρης Πρόεδρος Four constructive months have already transpired since the recent election of the GOCSA Executive Council and Supervisory Committee, during which several goals have successfully been achieved. Commencing in September, the Second Adelaide Hellenic Cultural Festival Odyssey was realised, attracting numerous patrons of the arts and offering high quality entertainment to our city throughout the month of October, culminating in November with the 6 th Greek Film Festival. The success of the Festival Odyssey needs to be attributed to the hard work and dedication of each of the Executive and Supervisory Committee s members, Chief Executive Officer, members of staff, the generosity of our sponsors, as well as our precious volunteers whose coordinated efforts serve the community, including three young women, namely Ivana Vlassis, Chloe Kourakis and Anna-Maria Andritsakis, whose youthful presence injected every event with pure enthusiasm and zest. Following the conclusion of the renovations undertaken at the hall adjacent to the Church of St. Nicholas in Thebarton, an inaugural event was hosted at the premises on Saturday 6 th October 2007 with the participation of numerous guests, distinguished politicians and government officials. Another equally significant event of this period involved the commemoration of the Cathedral Church of the Archangels, on the 8 th November 2007, comprising a church service and delicious meal offered at the Olympic Hall. This year marked the 70 th anniversary since the establishment of the church that stands as an important landmark in the history of the Greek Community of South Australia. An additional three noteworthy events were held in November 2007, namely a dedication to the 34 th Anniversary of the Polytechnio Day coorganised by the Cultural and Schools Committees, the 20 th Annual RGHA Fair that unfailingly attracts thousands of Greek-Australians, as well as a lecture delivered by Mr George Stassinakis, President of the International Company of Friends of Nick Kazantzakis, acknowledging the 50 th anniversary since the great Cretan author s death. Beyond the regular community services offered by our organisation, the GOCSA was also involved in a Radio-Marathon in September 2007, closely collaborating with the Greek Radio Program 5EBI FM and Greek Radio Stations Radio-Ena and Doriforos which provided significant financial support to the victims of the destructive bushfires that recently ravaged Greece. We are currently approaching the close of the year, and are busily preparing for the traditional Christmas festivities in honour of our members who tirelessly volunteer their time and services for our community. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to you all, for your support and contribution during 2007, wishing health and renewed strength for the year to come! Μήνυμα Διευθύνοντος Συμβούλου κ. Ιωάννη Σταυρινάκη With the 2007 year drawing to a close it is important to reflect on our achievements during the past year as well as reflect on the pending challenges in the new year and beyond. The relocation into our new building at 262 Franklin St, earlier this year, has proven to be a major milestone in the establishment of a centralized head office. Coupled with a new computer system we have managed to establish an ideal workplace which will adequately cater for our growing needs in the years to come. In fact, we now have our remote sites such as the Ridleyton Greek Home for the Aged and Hindmarsh Community Childcare Centre completely networked with our head office. This has allowed us to take advantage of the efficiencies of working through a local intranet and the adoption of common accounting software throughout the group. During the year, we also achieved a significant outcome in securing new funding for a Greek HACC Packages Program targeting the North-West and South-East metropolitan areas. This new program will act to compliment our other existing social and welfare programs and will provide us with additional necessary staffing resources. It will also enable us to restructure and consolidate our Social & Welfare department in order to efficiently utilize our limited resources. These exciting changes will act to compliment the consolidation activities that have recently been rolled out. In the month of October we had the pleasure in experiencing Adelaide s Hellenic Cultural Festival Odyssey. Once again, the Odyssey festival proved to be a great success with good attendances at each event. We also introduced for the first time a Greek Comedy Night, featuring the hilarious comedian George Kapiniaris, whose witty style provided a lot of laughs for all. This year, the Greek Film Festival also proved a hit with a host of new, contemporary films direct from Greece that were not previously screened in Australia. Aside from the specific Odyssey events, we must not forget that the festival would not be what it is today without the continued support of our sponsors, volunteers and the wider South Australian community. We extend our sincerest thanks and gratitude to all our supporters for showing their commitment to ensuring the Odyssey festival becomes an annual tradition on the South Australian events calendar. In the month of October we finally completed the renovation of our hall at George St, Thebarton. The results are spectacular to say the least. The refurbished facility is a welcome solution to the needs of our very active, loyal members and volunteers of the St Nicholas Church. In fact, this same enthusiasm extends across all our churches with their respective volunteers, who without these volunteers we would not be able to service the needs of our community in the way that we currently do. The coming year 2008 is certain to be a challenging year, with several construction projects scheduled to be commenced and completed including the long-awaited improvements to Ridleyton Greek Home for the Aged, the construction of our new hall adjacent to Koimisis Theotokou Church in Croydon, and the refurbishment of our hall adjacent to St s Constantine & Helen Church in Goodwood. These projects are firmly locked into our building program and I m sure that our members are eagerly waiting to see the results. Την Δευτέρα 3 Σεπτεμβρίου 2007, γιόρτασε την έναρξη της άνοιξης με το πλέξιμο στεφανιών κι αναπολώντας την καθιερωμένη γιορτή της Πρωτομαγιάς στην πατρίδα. Σ αυτό το τεύχος: Γηροκομείο Ridleyton Αναφορά σχολείων 2007 Ζώντας στο πνεύμα του Πολυτεχνείου Χριστούγεννα και νεολαία Ο εθελοντισμός στην Κοινότητα. Ομιλία κ. Ελοβάρη απο την έκθεση Φωτογραφίας του Φεστιβάλ «Οδύσσεια» Ρεπορτάζ: Φεστιβάλ ΟΔΥΣΕΕΙΑ 5 9 13 15 19 23 25 27 Αλληλογραφία 32 Επιπλέον, με τον ζεστό, ηλιόλουστο καιρό είχαμε τη δυνατότητα να ασχοληθούμε με δραστηριότητες στο ύπαιθρο, όπως βόλτες με το καροτσάκι στους κήπους του Γηροκομείου ή ηλιοθεραπεία στην αυλή. Την Τρίτη 23 Οκτωβρίου 2007, απολαύσαμε την καλοκαιρία διοργανώνοντας ένα πικνίκ στον αυλόγυρο του Τμήματος για Άτομα με Ειδικές Ανάγκες. Το καλάθι μας ήταν γεμάτο λιχουδιές και εκπλήξεις για την ημέρα μας στον ήλιο. Οι προετοιμασίες για το Κύπελλο Μελβούρνης στις 6 Νοεμβρίου 2007, περιλάμβαναν δραστηριότητες στην αίθουσα καλλιτεχνικών, όπου οι ένοικοι στόλισαν τα καπέλα τους δίνοντάς τους ένα προσωπικό στοιχείο. Το καλύτερο καπέλο βραβεύτηκε, ενώ όλοι παρακολούθησαν τον αγώνα στην μεγάλη οθόνη, πίνοντας όλοι μαζί έναν ευχάριστο απογευματινό καφέ. Επίσης εορτάσαμε την Εθνική μας Επέτειο του «ΟΧΙ» με έναν απογευματινό καφέ, την απαγγελία ποιημάτων και πατριωτικά τραγούδια της εποχής. Οι ένοικοι και οι εθελοντές θυμήθηκαν τα γεγονότα που σημάδευσαν την ιστορία της Ελλάδας μας. Με την ευκαιρία της επετείου της 28 ης Οκτωβρίου, οι ένοικοι παρακολούθησαν μια πολεμική ταινία με τον Χατζηχρήστο που τους συγκίνησε βαθιά. Η υπέροχη, αλλά και θλιβερή αυτή ημέρα ολοκληρώθηκε με την ανάγνωση του μηνύματος του Προέδρου της Κρατώντας τις παραδόσεις, η Διεύθυνση του Γηροκομεί ου οργάνωσε ειδική τελετή για τον εορτασμό της 28ης Οκτωβρί ου 1940, με τη σύσσωμη συμετοχή των τροφί μων. Με την άνοιξη να κάνει αισθητή την παρουσί α της, τρόφιμοι και φροντιστές αποφάσισαν να καλωσορίσουν την πολύχρωμη εποχή με την δημηιουργί α ανθοδέσμων.

ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΟΣ ΠΑΛΜΟΣ COMMUNITY PULSE Εκδηλώσεις στο Γηροκομείο του Ridleyton Στο πνεύμα του Αυστραλιανού ιπποδρόμου μπήκαν οι ένοικοι του Γηροκομείου με την κατασκευή χαρακτηριστικών καπέλων, γιορτάζοντας έτσι το παγκοσμίως γνωστό Κύπελλο Ιπποδρόμου της Μελβούρνης. Oι συνεχείς βελτιώσεις στο Ελληνικό Γηροκομείο του Ridleyton αποτελούν ένα σημαντικό μέρος του σχεδίου διαχείρισης» Στιγμιότυπο απο το πικνίκ που διοργάνωσε για τους τροφίμους η διεύθυνση του Γηροκομείου στα πλαίσια της κοινωνικής συναναστροφής η οποία ενθαρρύνεται μέσα από παρόμοιες δραστηριότητες. Page 6 ΕΟΚΝΑ για τον εορτασμό του θρυλικού «ΟΧΙ» - της 28 ης Οκτωβρίου 1940. Το Ελληνικό Γηροκομείο του Ridleyton συνεχώς προσπαθεί να επιτύχει όλο και υψηλότερα επίπεδα φροντίδας και υγιεινής. Είμαστε ιδιαίτερα περήφανοι να ανακοινώσουμε ότι τον Σεπτέμβρη πραγματοποιήθηκε επιθεώρηση του Χώρου Τροφίμων από το Γραφείο Περιβαλλοντικής Υγείας της Πόλης του Charles Sturt. Το Ελληνικό Γηροκομείο του Ridleyton έλαβε έπαινο για την πλήρωσε όλων των κριτηρίων και την απόλυτη εφαρμογή του Νόμου 2001 περί τροφίμων και των Επιπέδων Ασφάλειας Τροφίμων. Ο Δήμος σε αναγνώριση της επιτυχίας μας αυτής θα συμπεριλάβει το όνομα του Γηροκομείου στην επόμενη εγκύκλιο του. Oι συνεχείς βελτιώσεις στο Ελληνικό Γηροκομείο του Ridleyton αποτελούν ένα σημαντικό μέρος του σχεδίου διαχείρισης. Έχουμε ένα συνεχώς αναθεωρούμενο σχέδιο διαχείρισης μικρών και μεγάλων αναβαθμίσεων και βελτιώσεων. Κατά τις επισκέψεις σας στο ίδρυμα θα παρατηρήσατε ότι ορισμένες βελτιώσεις έχουν ήδη δρομολογηθεί. Μέχρι στιγμής, έχουμε λάβει θετικά σχόλια από το προσωπικό, τους ενοίκους και τις οικογένειές τους για τις βελτιώσεις αυτές. Πάντα στοχεύουμε να παρέχουμε την υψηλότερη δυνατή ποιότητα φροντίδας στους ενοίκους μας, ώστε κάθε αναβάθμιση των εγκαταστάσεων να ισοδυναμεί με την βελτίωση της ζωής των ενοίκων μας. Η Επιτροπή Κτιριακών Εγκαταστάσεων και η Διεύθυνση έχουν ολοκληρώσει τα σχέδια για μια μεγάλη κτιριακή αναβάθμιση που πρόκειται να υποβληθούν για προσφορές. Το παρεκκλήσι, η προέκταση της κεντρικής τραπεζαρίας, η προέκταση της κουζίνας καθώς επίσης η αναβάθμιση του εσωτερικού και εξωτερικού φωτισμού, αποτελούν μόλις ορισμένους από τους στόχους μας. Με μεγάλη περηφάνια το Ελληνικό Γηροκομείο του Ridleyton γιόρτασε την 20 η επέτειο του με το Ετήσιο Πανηγύρι του, την Κυριακή 25 Νοεμβρίου 2007. Η 10 η ετήσια λαχειοφόρος μας σημείωσε τεράστια επιτυχία με μόλις ελάχιστα βιβλία που παρέμειναν απούλητα. Τα μέλη του προσωπικού, οι ένοικοι και οι οκογένειές τους, καθώς και φίλοι συμπάροικοι συμμετείχαν στο Ετήσιο Πανηγύρι με άφθονο φαγητό, χορό και κέφι Ελληνικού τύπου!

Τεύχος 43 Issue 43 Events and happenings at Ridleyton Greek Home for the Aged As spring has bloomed so have activities and outings at Ridleyton Greek Home for the Aged. On Monday the 3 rd September 2007, we celebrated the beginning of Spring with flower arranging activities. The residents made table arrangements for the Home and spent an afternoon together reminiscing and discussing the first day of spring back home in Greece and the festivities associated with Protomayia. Ms Helen Chrisakis Director of Νursing at Ridleyton Greek Home for The Aged Also, the warmer, sunny weather has allowed us to participate in more outdoor activities, such as wheel chair walks through the gardens or sunbathing in the courtyards. On Tuesday 23 rd October 2007, we enjoyed the warm weather with an outdoor picnic in the Special Needs Courtyard. Our picnic basket was full of lovely surprises and treats for our day in the sun. In preparation for the Melbourne cup race, on the 6 th November 2007, residents and Activities staff spent an afternoon in the craft room decorating and giving their hats an individual flair. A prize was awarded for the best hat. Residents watched the race on the big screen and enjoyed afternoon tea together. Continuous Improvement at RGHA is an important part of our management and business plan. We have an ongoing, minor and major improvements and upgrades plan. We also celebrated our National Day - 28 th October - with an afternoon tea, reciting poems and a patriotic song. Residents and volunteers reminisced and celebrated the importance of the day in Greek history. For the occasion, an old Greek war film with Hatzihristos was screened capturing the audience and bringing tears to their eyes. This wonderful yet sad afternoon was concluded with the reading of the GOCSA President s announcement about the commemoration of OHI - 28 th October 1940. The nursing home proudly celebrated its 20-year service to the elderly Greeks of South Australia at the annual festival which was once again a successful event, and officially marked the nursing home s 20th anniversary. Ridleyton Greek Home for the Aged (RGHA) constantly strives to achieve as well as improve the highest possible standards of care and hygiene. We are proud to announce that a Food Premises Inspection was conducted in September by the Environmental Health Officer of City of Charles Sturt. RGHA received another commendation for achieving full compliance with the food Act 2001 and the Food Safety Standards. Traditional Greek cuisine, Greek dancing and good weather created the perfect atmosphere for those who attended the festival. plan. On your visits to RGHA you would have noticed improvements have already commenced. To date, we have received favorable feedback from staff, residents and relatives on these improvements. We always aim to provide the highest quality care for the residents by improving the facility, which ultimately improves our residents care and lifestyle. The Building Committee and the Board of Management have finalized all major building plans and are ready to take these to Tender. The Chapel, the extension to the main dining room, the extension of the main kitchen and the upgrade of internal and external lighting are just a few of the great improvements to come. It is with pride that the RGHA celebrated its 20 th Anniversary at the Annual Festival held on Sunday 25 th, November 2007 at the Home. Our 10 th Annual Lottery was a huge success with only a few books unsold. All staff, residents, families, friends and community members joined us for a day of food, dance, fun and celebration in true Greek style! Main Aims The Greek Orthodox Community of SA Inc. has historically and pragmatically adopted the duty of service provider, and continues to invest significantly toward a quality language education for the Greek community. The Greek afternoon and Saturday schools main aims involve: 1. The advancement of the Greek language in the broader community. 2. Τhe strengthening of the Greek ethnic identity through the teaching of the Greek language and culture. 3. Τhe organisation, coordination and provision of Greek language instruction to first, second, or third generation Greek- Australians as well as to individuals of non-greek background. 4. The development of teaching materials, teachers professional development and the organisation of cultural events that contribute towards the promotion and more efficient diffusion of the Greek language. Greek Schools, Committee Members and Teaching Staff The Schools Coordinator s Office operates at a regulating and executing capacity on issues of language education. It also coordinates 17 schools scattered throughout the Adelaide Metropolitan area, employing 20 teachers for the delivery of Greek language classes to approximately 480 students across all ages and year levels. During 2006-2007, the Schools Committee comprised the following members: N. Saripasoglou (Chairperson), Ν. Dionysopoulos, S. Εlovaris, Κ. Hawkins, S. Cassoudakis, Ε. Mavrogiorgis, V. Roubanis, P. Sotiropoulos, P. Demetriou acting as Director for Education, and J. Touloumtzoglou as Schools Coordinator. The members of the teaching staff included A. Adamou, J. Athans, N. Velissaris, K. Giannakis, T. Zacharias, P. Kapiris, H. Kasmeridis, H. Kermanidou, M. Kisembo, E. Leonardos, P. Liascos, A. Dounas, Y. Oikonomou, F. Papaioannou, T. Papas, A. Togias, D. Houssos, as well as three Greek teachers appointed by the Education Service of the Greek Consulate in Adelaide, namely P. Grigoriadou, K. Taoultzides, and E. Chatoglou. Inception of New Schools The period 2006 2007 presented an increase in the number of GOCSA afternoon and Saturday ethnic schools to a total of 17, in response to parents expression of interest. Two new ethnic schools were introduced at Pulteney Grammar School and Annesley College, one afternoon Greek language school was incepted at East Adelaide PS, while the independent afternoon Greek language school hosted by St John Bosco also was transferred over to GOCSA. In 2006, the Schools Committee received approval to introduce a small enrolment fee to financially support and to meet the annually incurred photocopying expenses as well as the increasing schools needs and demands. Cultural Events A number of successful cultural schools events marked the period 2006-2007. Maras, and members of the Executive Committee, Mr T. Georganas, Federal MP for Labour, Mrs E. Koutsou, Consul for Education of the Greek Consulate in Adelaide, Mr P. PPiros, publisher of the Greek newspaper Paroikiako Vema and Mr N. Bolkus, former Federal MP. Students, teachers and volunteers were congratulated for the combined work effort in the realisation of the event, the proceeds of which contributed toward the support of the schools. Another significant effort by the Schools Coordinator s Office involved the organisation of the Greek Schools Festival 2006, an event that concluded the Adelaide Greek Cultural Festival Odyssey. Many distinguished guests representing the Greek government participated in the Greek Schools Festival 2006, such as the Consul General of Greece Mr D, Chatzopoulos and partner, the Consul for Education of the Greek Consulate in Adelaide, Mrs E. Koutsou, the Minister for Education and Children s Services (DECS) Dr Jane Lomax -Smith, as well as representatives from the Multicultural Education Committee, Mr V. Andreacchio και Mr Β. Robinson. The above event not only commemorated Greek National Day, but also was an initiative to inform/educate Greek families about the increased risk of childhood obesity in the western developed world and in particular amongst Greekbackground people. Guest speaker and GOCSA collaborator, Mrs Thalia Ioannidou from the Greek- Australian Welfare of Victoria, contributed with well-structured activities and lesson plans on the topic, which culminated in students presentations of songs, theatrical plays and projects on healthy diet and wellbeing at the festival. Among other guest speakers it is worth acknowledging Super League soccer players, Elias Vlassis, Michael Varkanis and Lucas Pantelios of Adelaide United, who spoke to students about the importance of incorporating healthy eating habits and exercise regimes in their daily routine. Students also participated in several fun races, including the sacrace, the spoon and egg race, the three-legged race, relay as well as a final soccer game refereed by B. Vagenas. Students were awarded medals for their athletic prowess, whereas the Paul and Desi Demetriou Prizes valued at $50.00 each were awarded to students for excellence in the study of Modern Greek. The event was supported financially by many private sponsors, such as KAMBITSIS GROUP, D&S GROUP OF COM- PANIES, RAPTIS FISH MARKETS, STAM FRUIT SUPPLY, Knispel Fruit Juices Pty Ltd, ROSE- WATER MEATS, SD TIL- LETT MEMORIALS PTY LTD, GAGANIS Bros, as well as the Greek Women s Fellowship and Multicultural Education Committee. Parents also contributed in various ways toward the event, such as Mr Alexandrides who offered his cool room for the transport and maintenance of all perishables, Mr Tzekas, Mr Sfyrios and Mr Georganas through the donation of soft drinks and others offering platters of nutritious food.

Certificate of Proficiency in Greek In 2007, the Consul for Education of the Greek Consulate in Adelaide, Mrs Koutsou called a meeting of the main Greek language education providers in order to inform them in preparation of the first exams held in Adelaide for the Certificate of Greek language Proficiency offered by the Aristoteleio University of Thessaloniki. Dr Touloumtzoglou attended the meeting representing GOCSA schools. For the first time in South Australia, on the 14 th and 15 th May 2007, both high school and University students, as well as other interested individuals sat for the exams held at Flinders University for the Certificate of Proficiency in Greek. Dr Touloumtzoglou participated both as an assessor in the oral exams for levels one and two of the Certificate of Proficiency in Greek and supervisor for the written exams. Language Engagement Strategy 2007-2008 In March 2007, the Director for Education and Schools Coordinator attended the launch of the Language Engagement Strategy 2007-2008, at the Adelaide HS, an initiative of DECS that aims at promoting the benefits of language learning in the community and generating a more positive response following the decline in popularity over the last decades. Development of teaching resources and audiovisual materials State government funding has supported the Schools Coordinator s Office in the development and publishing of original teaching resources and audiovisual materials appropriately adapted to meet the students learning needs, including a three part series entitled Speak Greek with Me ( Μίλα Ελληνικά Μαζί μου ), that comprises two DVDs and accompanying workbook, in addition to six beautifully illustrated early childhood readers by the titles I Count, One, Two ( Μετρώ Ένα, Δυο ), The dance of the Seasons ( Ο Χορός των Εποχών ), The Days of Aris ( Οι μέρες του Άρη ), Aris goes to the beach ( Ο Άρης πάει στη θάλασσα ), Clothes (Τα ρούχα) and Morfoula. Future Directions The unique operational conditions of Greek afternoon and Saturday schools, call for continuous reassessment. The necessity of discovering new methods for delivering quality Greek language education in South Australia in combination with the unquestionable possibilities modern technology has to offer this area, have lead the Schools Committee to the submission of a proposal to the Executive Committee for the establishment of a Technology Centre at the new offices in Franklin street. Further to this, a submission for funding has also been prepared and forwarded to the Ethnic Schools Board. The facility aims at introducing new technologies and the use of IT in afternoon and Saturday Greek schools, Mr P. Demetriou and Dr J. Touloumtzoglou presenting the awards at the Schools Festival. The development of teaching materials, teachers professional development and the organisation of cultural events contribute towards the promotion and more efficient diffusion of the Greek language. Τεύχος 43 Issue 34 Το πνεύμα του Πολυτεχνείου, επίκαιρο όσο ποτέ άλλοτε Ακολουθώντας τη μακρά παράδοσή της, η Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα Νότιας Αυστραλίας γιόρτασε και φέτος την Ημέρα του Πολυτεχνείου αποτιώντας φόρο τιμής στους νέους και τις νέες που αγωνίστηκαν και θυσιάστηκαν για την ελευθερία και την αποκατάσταση της Δημοκρατίας στην Ελλάδα μας, καθώς και την αδιατάρακτη λειτουργία της για τρεις και πλέον δεκαετίες. Σε μια ταπεινή εκδήλωση στο Ολύμπικ Χωλ, παρουσία του Διοικητικού και Εποπτικού Συμβουλίου, η Πολιτιστική Επιτροπή σε συνεργασία με τα Ελληνικά Απογευματινά και Σαββατιανά Σχολεία απέδωσαν το νόημα της ημέρας με ποικίλα οπτικοακουστικά μέσα και τη συμμετοχή μαθητών και καλλιτεχνών της παροικίας. Την έναρξη του προγράμματος σημείωσε μια σύντομη ανασκόπιση στα δρώμενα που προηγήθηκαν την ημέρα της 17ης Νοεμβρίου 1973, καταλήγοντας στον αιματηρό αγώνα της νεολαίας της Ελλάδας κατά του φασισμού από την Συντονίστρια των Σχολείων Δρ. Ιωάννα Τουλουμτζόγλου και τον κ. Θεόδωρο Παναγόπουλο. Ακολούθησε η προβολή αποσπασμάτων από τις ιστορικές πορείες διαμαρτυρίας των φοιτητών της δεκαετίας του 70, ακολουθούμενη από την παρουσίαση εργασίας με θέμα το αντίκτυπο του φοιτητικού αγώνα για τις νεότερες γενιές Ελλήνων από τον μαθητή του Γυμνασίου Χρήστο Θεοδόση και την ερμηνεία πατριωτικών τραγουδιών από την ταλαντούχο μαθήτρια Μαρία Βασιλέλλη και την επαγγελματική Page 13 παρουσία της διάσημης Ελληνίδας τραγουδίστριας Πόλλυς Αραμπτζή. Αλλά ας ανατρέξουμε πίσω και ας θυμηθούμε τι συνέβη στην πατρίδα μας πριν από 40 χρόνια... Ας γυρίσουμε πίσω στον Απρίλη του 1967, όταν μια ομάδα αξιωματικών, ονομαζόμενοι από το λαό «χούντα» κατέλαβε την εξουσία. Η χούντα κυβέρνησε τυραννικά, δικτατορικά 7 χρόνια. Όμως η πίκρα και η οργή του λαού σιγά-σιγά μεγάλωνε ώσπου άρχισαν οι πρώτες αντιδράσεις, οι απεργίες των εργαζομένων και οι αποχές των φοιτητών από τα μαθήματά τους. Έτσι φτάσαμε στο 1973, μια χρονιά δύσκολη για όλους. Το Φεβρουάριο του 1973 οι φοιτητές συγκεντρώθηκαν στο Πολυτεχνείο με την απαίτηση να καταργηθεί ο νόμος που απαγόρευε τη συνδικαλιστική δράση των φοιτητών. Λίγες μέρες αργότερα οι φοιτητές έκαναν κατάληψη της Νομικής σχολής Αθηνών για τον ίδιο λόγο. Τότε ακούστηκαν και τα συνθήματα «Κάτω η χούντα» και «Ζήτω η ελευθερία». Και στις δύο περιπτώσεις η αστυνομία διέλυσε τους συγκεντρωμένους φοιτητές. Όμως τα αιτήματα των φοιτητών παρέμειναν άλυτα και ο φοιτητικός αγώνας κορυφώθηκε τον Νοέμβριο του 1973. Τα γεγονότα του Πολυτεχνείου το Νοέμβριο του 1973 άρχισαν με μια συγκέντρωση στο προαύλιο του Πολυτεχνείου. Ήταν 14 Νοεμβρίου. Οι φοιτητές ζητούσαν να γίνουν οι φοιτητικές εκλογές όπως είχε καθοριστεί και να μην αναβληθούν. Παρόμοιες συγκεντρώσεις έγιναν στη Νομική και στην Ιατρική σχολή. Οι φοιτητές από τις δύο αυτές σχολές μαζεύτηκαν κι αυτοί στο Πολυτεχνείο. Ακούστηκαν τα πρώτα συνθήματα: «ΨΩΜΙ - ΠΑΙΔΕΙΑ - ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ «ΚΑΤΩ Η ΧΟΥΝΤΑ» «ΖΗΤΩ Η ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ» Οι φοιτητές αποφασίζουν την κατάληψη του Πολυτεχνείου. Η αστυνομία αντιδρά αμέσως. Αρχίζει να πολιορκεί το Πολυτεχνείο. Οι φοιτητές δεν το βάζουν κάτω. Οργανώνουν τη ζωή τους μέσα σ' αυτό. Ο φοιτητικός αγώνας με κέντρο το Πολυτεχνείο αρχίζει. Οι φοιτητές συγκεντρώνουν φάρμακα, στήνουν πρόχειρο ιατρείο για τις δύσκολες καταστάσεις. Σε λίγο αρχίζει να εκπέμπει ο πομπός του Πολυτεχνείου. Στην αρχή δειλά και σιγά. Αργότερα όμως δυνατά και θαρρετά. Ο ραδιοφωνικός σταθμός του Πολυτεχνείου ακουγόταν σε όλη την Αττική. Ήταν ο μόνος ελεύθερος ραδιοφωνικός σταθμός. Οι φοιτητές με τις εκπομπές τους καλούσαν το λαό της Αθήνας να τους συμπαρασταθεί και να τους βοηθήσει. «Εδώ Πολυτεχνείο, εδώ Πολυτεχνείο. Σας μιλά ο σταθμός των ελεύθερων αγωνιζόμενων φοιτητών, των ελεύθερων αγωνιζόμενων Ελλήνων. Απόψε πεθαίνει ο φασισμός. Ζήτω η Λευτεριά. Ψωμί - Παιδεία - Ελευθερία». Ο κόσμος της Αθήνας κατεβαίνει στο πολυτεχνείο προσφέρει φάρμακα, χρήματα,

ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΟΣ ΠΑΛΜΟΣ COMMUNITY PULSE Το πνεύμα του Πολυτεχνείου, επίκαιρο όσο ποτέ άλλοτε κουβέρτες, καλάθια με τρόφιμα. Φωνάζουν συνθήματα κατά της χούντας. Η αστυνομία προσπαθεί να διαλύσει τον μαζεμένο κόσμο που φωνάζει έξω από το Πολυτεχνείο. Όμως τα πράματα δυσκολεύουν. Τη νύχτα φτάνουν τα τεθωρακισμένα έξω από το Πολυτεχνείο. Οι φοιτητές προσπαθούν να αποφύγουν την αιματοχυσία. Ο σταθμός τους εκπέμπει: «Φαντάροι, είμαστε άοπλοι, είμαστε αδέλφια, μη μας χτυπήσετε». Τρεις από τους φοιτητές ανεβαίνουν στα κάγκελα της σιδερένιας πύλης. Πιάνουν κουβέντα με τους φαντάρους. «Είμαστε αδέλφια, μη μας χτυπήσετε, είμαστε άοπλοι». Οι διαταγές όμως είναι άλλες και το τεθωρακισμένο προχωρεί προς την πύλη του Πολυτεχνείου. «Λαέ μας σκοτώνουν. Μας σκοτώνουν, βοήθεια, ο φασισμός δε θα περάσει. Τώρα μπαίνουν... τους βλέπω... Ζήτω η Ελλάδα... Σε γνωρίζω από την κόψη του σπαθιού την τρομερή...». Και μετά σιωπή. Σε λίγη ώρα οι φοιτητές διαλύθηκαν κακήν κακώς. Το κυνηγητό φοιτητών και πολιτών συνεχίστηκε μέχρι το πρωί. Με την εξέγερση των φοιτητών το οικοδόμημα της χούντας άρχισε να τρίζει συθέμελα. Το αποτέλεσμα αυτής της εξέγερσης φάνηκε 8 μήνες αργότερα όταν κατέρρευσε η χούντα και αποκαταστάθηκε η δημοκρατία στη χώρα που γεννήθηκε. Το όνειρο των φοιτητών πήρε σάρκα και οστά 8 μήνες μετά τη θυσία τους. Ας σταθούμε λοιπόν κι εμείς σήμερα, ταπεινοί προσκυνητές μπροστά στη μνήμη των αγωνιστών του Πολυτεχνείου κι ας αναλογιστούμε το μεγάλο μας χρέος να διαφυλάξουμε τα αγαθά της δημοκρατίας και της ελευθερίας και να αποτίσουμε τον πρέποντα φόρο τιμής στη νεολαία της εποχής εκείνης που αντιστάθηκε στη δικτατορία με επιμονή και αυταπάρνηση. Το Πολυτεχνείο ανήκει σε όλους εμάς τους Έλληνες, όπως το Μεσολόγγι, τ Αρκάδι και κάθε τι που συνθέτει την ιστορία αυτού του τόπου. Μα πιο πολύ ανήκει στην Ελληνική Παιδεία, δημιουργώντας αυξημένες υποχρεώσεις στους εκπαιδευτικούς να ενσταλλάξουν στις ψυχές της νέας γενιάς τα ακατάλυτα κι αιώνια ιδανικά της ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑΣ και της ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑΣ. Δύο κόσμοι συγκρούστηκαν τότε. Ο κόσμος της ωμής βίας που σήμερα εξακολουθεί να καταδυναστεύει πλήθος λαών της γης και ο κόσμος των αδούλωτων νέων ανθρώπων που οραματίζονται μια ανθρώπινη ζωή. Στη σύγκρουση με την ωμή βία νίκησαν οι άοπλοι νέοι, όπως θέλουμε να ελπίζουμε ότι θα νικήσουν οι νέοι όλων των καταδυναστευμένων λαών της οικουμένης. Χάρη στους αγώνες και τις θυσίες της εποχής εκείνης, απολαμβάνει η Ελλάδα σήμερα μια δημοκρατία με μεγάλο κύρος στην Ευρωπαϊκή οικογένεια, ενώ η Κύπρος, παρά την πληγή που κατατρώει τα σπλάχνα της, κατόρθωσε να λάβει τη θέση ενός ισότιμου μέλους της Ευρωπαΐκής Ένωσης. Ο καλύτερος πάντως φόρος τιμής στους πρωτεργάτες της Δημοκρατίας σήμερα είναι η εγρήγορσή μας απέναντι στους κινδύνους που επιβουλεύονται τη Δημοκρατία. Πρόκειται για κινδύνους είτε εγχώριας προέλευσης, όπως είναι η διαφθορά ή η υπονόμευση των θεσμών, είτε για κινδύνους εισαγόμενους, όπως είναι η διεθνής τρομοκρατία. Χρέος όλων μας, ηγεσίας και λαού, είναι να διαφυλάξουμε ως κόρη οφθαλμού τη λεπτή ισορροπία ανάμεσα στην ασφάλεια και την ελευθερία, ανάμεσα στην ανάγκη προστασίας των πολιτών από επιθέσεις κατά των δικαιωμάτων τους, αλλά και προστασίας των κανόνων λειτουργίας της Δημοκρατίας, ώστε να λειτουργούν ως εγγυήσεις ελευθερίας και όχι ως όχημα κατάλυσής της. Τεύχος 43 Issue 43 Commemorating the events of the 1973 Athens Polytechic Upholding a long standing tradition, the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia Inc. celebrated the Day of the Polytechnic, on Sunday 18 th, November 2007 at the Olympic House, honouring the youth who sacrificed themselves for the restitution of Freedom and Democracy in Greece, and for ensuring this democratic system remain uninterrupted for over three consecutive decades. In the presence of members of the Executive and Supervisory Committees, the Cultural and Schools Committee worked in unison to provide an intellectually stimulating and entertaining program commemorating the day. The program was opened by the President of the Cultural Committee Mrs Hellas Lucas and presented by the General Secretary, Ms Sylvia Cassoudakis. The Schools Coordinator, Dr Joanna Touloumtzoglou and Mr Theo Panagolpoulos presented a brief overview of the events that transpired in Greece, in the tragic years of 1973 and 1974, leading to the collapse of the military regime. This engaging speech was precipitated by a graphic audio -visual presentation, ensued by a speech by high school student Chris Theodosis entitled Why should all Greeks be grateful to the students of the Polytechnic. Wonderful performances by high school student Maria Vasilellis and popular Greek-Australian singer Polly Arabatzis concluded the evening, joined by an enthusiastic audience. Joanna Touloumtzoglou Schools Coordinator Χριστούγεννα και η νεολαία της εποχής μας Όταν βλέπω τους νέους γύρω μας, και τα εγγόνια μας, βλέπω σε αυτούς το μέλλον του κόσμου. Και είναι βέβαιο ότι όλοι μας επιδιώκουμε ένα καλύτερο μέλλον! Γι αυτό χρειαζόμαστε καλούς νέους. Στο παρελθόν, όπως γνωρίζουμε από την ιστορία, αλλά και από την προσωπική μας πείρα, έχουν δοκιμαστεί πολλές μέθοδοι και διάφορα κοινωνικά συστήματα για ένα καλύτερο μέλλον, αλλά δυστυχώς όλα απέτυχαν οικτρά. Έτσι, ένα μόνο «σύστημα» (εάν μας επιτρέπεται να το ονομάσουμε έτσι) μας απομένει. Το σύστημα το οποίο έφερε στον κόσμο ο Ιησούς ο Υιός του Θεού. Κατά τον καιρό της γέννησής Του, το μήνυμα ήταν απλό και καθαρό, αλλά τόσο περιεκτικό. Ο κόσμος άκουσε το μήνυμα πριν ακόμα να δει Αυτόν που το έφερε. «Δόξα εν Υψίστοις Θεώ και επί γης ειρήνη εν ανθρώποις ευδοκία». Δεν υπήρχε άλλος καλύτερος τρόπος για να αναγγελθεί στον κόσμο ότι ο Σωτήρας Ιησούς έχει γεννηθεί από τον Αγγελικό Ύμνο κατά τη νύχτα της θείας γέννησης. Ο ευαγγελιστής Λουκάς, ο οποίος μας διηγείται το θαύμα και περιγράφει το περιστατικό, λέγει στο Ευαγγέλιό του: «Και έξαφνα με τον άγγελον εκείνον πλήθος στρατού αγγέλων από τον ουρανό δοξολογούσαν τον Θεόν και έλεγαν: Δόξα εν υψίστοις Θεώ και επί γης ειρήνη, εν ανθρώποις ευδοκία». (Λουκά ΙΙ, 13-14). Ο κόσμος δεν είχε ξαναδεί πιο εξαίσιο θαύμα! Ο Θεός να γεννηθεί πάνω στη γη σαν άνθρωπος. Δεν μπορούσε να ακουστεί άλλο πιο χαρούμενο μήνυμα. Ειρήνη πάνω στη γη, θεία χάρη και ευτυχία για τους ανθρώπους. Η υπόσχεση που έδωσε ο Θεός στον Αδάμ και την Εύα τώρα πραγματοποιείται. Κατά τη νύχτα της θείας γέννησης, ο Άγγελος είπε στους έκπληκτους βοσκούς: «Ιδού σας φέρνω χαρμόσυνη είδηση που θα είναι χαρά για όλο το λαό, διότι γεννήθηκε σήμερα για σας Σωτήρ, ο Πατήρ Νικόλαος Δεσποινούδης «Σ αυτήν την ταραγμένη εποχή που ζούμε και που συμβαίνουν καταστρεπτικοί πόλεμοι και στυγερά εγκλήματα στον κόσμο, η Εκκλησία μας τελεί την Θεία Λειτουργία κάθε μέρα και προσεύχεται υπέρ της ειρήνης του σύμπαντος κόσμου.» Page 15

ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΟΣ ΠΑΛΜΟΣ COMMUNITY PULSE Χριστούγεννα και η νεολαία της εποχής μας οποίος είναι ο Χριστός, ο Μεσσίας, ο Κύριος...» (Λουκά ΙΙ, 10-11). Μεγάλη χαρά για όλο τον κόσμο διότι σήμερα γεννήθηκε ο Σωτήρας του κόσμου. Ένα από τα ονόματα του Σωτήρος, ο οποίος γεννήθηκε εκείνη τη νύχτα και συνεχίζει να γεννιέται στις καρδιές των πιστών, είναι «Εμμανουήλ». Αυτό το όνομα που είναι εβραϊκή λέξη, εννοεί: «Ο Θεός είναι μαζί μας». Αυτό φανερώνει την προσωπική παρουσία του Θεού ανάμεσα στους ανθρώπους. Εκείνη τη νύχτα γεννήθηκε ο Σωτήρας Χριστός και από τότε μένει πάντοτε μαζί μας, όπως ο ίδιος μας το βεβαίωσε όταν μας είπε: «Και ιδού εγώ μεθ υμών είμι πάσας τας ημέρας...» (Ματθ. 28, 20). Η Εκκλησία είναι ο Εμμανουήλ. Ο Θεός μαζί μας. Ο ύμνος που έψαλλαν οι Άγγελοι τη νύχτα που γεννήθηκε ο Σωτήρας Χριστός είναι ο ύμνος της Εκκλησίας. Η Εκκλησία είναι η δόξα του Θεού, η επι γής ειρήνη, η θεία ευλογία και η χαρά των ανθρώπων, αν και υπάρχουν πολλοί που αμφιβάλλουν και φέρονται εχθρικά κατά της Εκκλησίας. Το μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας αποκαλύφθηκε στον κόσμο για τη δόξα του Θεού, για την επίγεια ειρήνη και τη χαρά των ανθρώπων. Η πιο σπουδαία ανθρώπινη πράξη είναι η Θεία Λειτουργία την οποία τελεί η Εκκλησία για να δοξάζει τον Θεόν. Η Θεία Λειτουργία αρχίζει με τις λέξεις: «Ευλογημένη η Βασιλεία του Πατρός και του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος...». Η Εκκλησία προσεύχεται για την παγκόσμια ειρήνη και εύχεται και ευλογεί τους πιστούς λέγοντας: «Ειρήνη πάσι». Και περισσότερο ακόμα προς το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας προσκαλεί τους πιστούς: «Μετά φόβου Θεού, πίστεως και αγάπης προσέλθετε», να πάρετε θεία κοινωνία και να ενωθείτε με το Θεό. Ο Σωτήρας Χριστός, του οποίου τη γέννηση έψαλλαν οι Άγγελοι, ότι ήταν η δόξα του Θεού, η ειρήνη της γης και η θεία ευλογία και χαρά για τους ανθρώπους. Αυτός ο ίδιος εγκαθίδρυσε το μυστήριο της Θείας Ευχαριστίας και η Εκκλησία συνεχίζει να τελεί τη Θεία Λειτουργία για να δοξάζεται ο Θεός, η γη να διατηρείται εν ειρήνη και να καθαγιάζονται οι πιστοί. Η Θεία Λειτουργία είναι η αγιότερη πράξη της Εκκλησίας και των πιστών. Σ αυτήν την ταραγμένη εποχή που ζούμε και που συμβαίνουν καταστρεπτικοί πόλεμοι και στυγερά εγκλήματα στον κόσμο, η Εκκλησία μας τελεί την Θεία Λειτουργία κάθε μέρα και προσεύχεται «υπερ της ειρήνης του σύμπαντος κόσμου». Οι άνθρωποι και μάλιστα οι Χριστιανοί δεν πρέπει να ξεχνούν τα λόγια του Σωτήρος Ιησού Χριστού που αναφέρονται στο Ευαγγέλιο «Να έχετε ειρήνη μεταξύ σας». Και ο απόστολος Παύλος στην προς Γαλάτας επιστολή λέγει ότι η ειρήνη είναι καρπός του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Αυτό εννοεί ότι η ειρήνη εξαρτάται από τη χάρη του Θεού και την εσωτερική γαλήνη των ανθρώπων. Όλα αυτά είναι αλληλένδετα: Η Δόξα του Θεού, η επί γης ειρήνη και η εν ανθρώποις ευδοκία. «Δόξα εν υψίστοις Θεώ, και επί γής ειρήνη, εν ανθρώποις ευδοκία». Η προσευχή όλων μας αυτό το χρόνο ας είναι κάπως έτσι: Κύριέ μου, Ιησού Χριστέ! Δυο χιλιάδες χρόνια έχουν περάσει από τότε, και φοβούμαι ότι ακόμα δεν υπάρχει κατάλυμα για Σένα! Όπως και τη νύχτα που γεννήθηκες. Και επειδή εμείς οι αμαρτωλοί και άπιστοι πρέπει να ζητούμε τη βοήθειά Σου για όλα, Σε ικετεύουμε, βοηθησέ μας ώστε με την ευλογία Σου να γιορτάσουμε τη γέννησή Σου στον κόσμο με πίστη. Θα είναι πολύ τραγικό για μας Κύριε αν γιορτάσουμε και αυτόν τον χρόνο τα Χριστούγεννα χωρίς Χριστό... Σε παρακαλούμε Κύριε, έλα και μείνε μαζί μας. Σε έχουμε ανάγκη... Αμήν. «Το μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας αποκαλύφθηκε στον κόσμο για τη δόξα του Θεού, για την επίγεια ειρήνη και τη χαρά των ανθρώπων.» Page 16

Τεύχος 43 Issue 34 The meaning of Christmas for the youth CHRISTMAS MES- SAGE TO OUR YOUNGER GENERA- TION When I see the young generation around us, our children and grandchildren, I see in them the future of this world. And we all want a better future! So we need a good young generation. In the past, as we know from history and personal experience, many methods and social systems have been tried for a better future, but all of them ended in a lamentable failure. Thus, only one system (if we can call it that) remains. The system brought to the world by Jesus, the Son of God. At the time of his birth, the message was simple and clear, and yet so comprehensive! The world heard the message before they even saw the messenger. Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace; good will upon all humans. On the night of the divine birth, there was no better announcement made to the world from the Angelic host, than that Jesus, the Saviour was born. The evangelist Luke describes the miracle of Christ s birth in his gospel as follows;...suddenly there was with the angels a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will upon all humans. (Luke II, 13-14) The world had never seen a more wondrous miracle! God to be born on earth as a man! There was not another more joyful message to be heard; peace on earth, divine grace and happiness to human beings. The promise given by God to Adam and Even now is fulfilled. During the night of the divine birth, the angel said to the astounded shepherds; Behold I bring you good news and great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. (Luke II, 10-11) Great joy for the whole world, because today the Saviour of the world is born... One of the names of the Saviour who was born on that night, and continues to be born in the hearts of the faithful, is Emmanuel. This name, which is a Hebrew word, means God is with us. This reveals a personal appearance of God among the people. That night the Saviour Christ was born, and He dwells with us since, as He assured us saying: Lo, I am with you always, until the end of time. And this is not other but the Church, because as one of the Holy fathers said: The Church, is Christ with us to the end of time. The church is Emmanuel; God with us. The hymn that the Angels chanted the night that Saviour Christ was born, is the hymn of the Church. The Church is the glory of God, the peace on Earth and the divine grace and the joy to the people, whatever the reservedness, the accusations and the hostilities are, by many people against the Church. The mystery of the Church was revealed to the world for the Glory of God, for the peace on earth, and for the joy of people. Most important of all human works, is the Divine Liturgy, which the church celebrates and Glorifies God. The Divine Liturgy begins with these words: Blessed is the kingdom of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit,,, ; the Church prays for the peace of the whole world; and gives blessings and joy to the people by saying Peace be with you all. Page 18 calls (invites) the faithful, With fear of God, with faith and love, draw near, to receive the Holy Communion and to unite with God. The Saviour Christ, who s birth was chanted by the angels, as it was God s glory, the peace of the earth and the divine grace and joy to the people, He Himself established the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, and the church continues to celebrate the Divine Liturgy, so God can be glorified, the earth be at peace and the grace of God and the joy to be with the people. The Divine Liturgy is the holiest work of the Church; the best and the greatest that people can do. In this turbulent time that we live in, and wars and crimes of enormous proportions are happening in the world, our Church celebrates every day the Divine Liturgy and supplicates for the peace of the whole world. The people and especially Christians, must not forget the word of the Saviour Jesus Christ in the Gospel. Have lasting peace amongst yourselves. And Apostle Paul in his letter to the Galatians says that; the fruit of the Holy Spirit is...peace, which means that the peace of the world depends on the grace of God and the joy within the people. All these are tied together: The Glory of God, the peace on earth and the divine grace of joy within the people. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will upon all humans. Let everyone s prayer this year, be something like this: Jesus Christ, my Lord! Two thousand years have passed since, but I am afraid that still there is no room for you! Like the night You were born. And because for everything, we the wicked and unfaithful must ask for Your help, we beg You to help us, so with Your blessing to celebrate Your birth into the world with faith. It will be very tragic for us if we are going to celebrate this year s Christmas again without Christ...Please Lord, come and dwell with us; we need You...Amen.

Το Κοινωνικό Πρόγραμμα Στήριξης Φιλοξενία παίζει ένα σημαντικό ρόλο στην διευκόλυνση και υποστήριξη των ασθενών ηλικιωμένων ατόμων, ατόμων με ειδικές ανάγκες και τους φροντιστές τους: καθιστώντας τους πιο ανεξάρτητους στο σπίτι και στην κοινωνία, βελτιώνοντας έτσι την ποιότητα ζωής τους και επιβραδύνοντας την πρόωρη και ακατάλληλη εισαγωγή τους σε Οι κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου Αδελφότητος του Ι.
