THE SOURCE August 2014 Issue # 8-14 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA Live FREE live as servants of GOD 1 Peter 2:16 The above is from the theme of our Metropolis Summer camp this summer. I had the privilege of going to summer camp for one of the GOYA/teen sessions. I thought that for this article I d share some of what we learned and did at camp. Every day at camp follows a pattern of activities and also revolves around the theme for the week and the day. The theme for the week was about breaking free from the slavery of sin and living as free servants of God. In addition to the quote above, many of the scripture readings of the week revolved around the book of Exodus in which the Israelites, the people of God, were working as slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt and with God s help through Moses and Aaron s broke free from bondage and left (made an exodus) from Egypt. There are obvious parallels between that story and our salvation in Christ. Israelites are us, the bondage is our bondage to sin, Moses is a Christ figure, the exodus and Passover are Christ s passion and resurrection giving us victory over sin, the destruction of Pharaoh, who stands for the devil, and his army (the demons) in the red sea is an example of the defeat of the devil and his minions, 40 years wandering in the desert may be analogous to the fact that salvation, while accomplished by Christ once for all time, takes time and effort to implement in our own lives. The day at camp includes chapel morning and evening, with some quiet time to pray, study scripture, write in journal, etc. after morning chapel. There are clergy-lead teaching sessions and discussion groups then some fun times like free swim in the afternoon. In the evening after dinner and chapel, there s usually some fun activity. Morning and evening services are usually an abbreviated Orthros and Vespers, but throughout the week other services are substituted. For example, Unction on Wednesday, Thursday morning divine liturgy, Thursday night paraklesis, Friday night artoclasia and Trisagion. Wednesday evening the routine schedule is changed slightly so that the campers may come to confession. Since this session of camp over-lapped with the Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Philadelphia, we were initially worried about having enough priests to get through all the confessions in a reasonable period of time since virtually all of the campers make a confession. There is also a step up program for the oldest teens at camp. It focuses on the kids who are too old to come back as campers again, the ones who graduated from high school this year, but also includes the rising seniors, too. This step up program takes place after the rest of the kids are getting ready for or in bed and was led by two dynamic counselors. I only went to two of these late night activities. One was senior speeches in chapel. (continued on next page)

THE SOURCE AUGUST 2014 Page 2 These speeches were about what camp has meant to them in their development as Orthodox Christians and, kids being kids, there was some silliness to some of the speeches, but all of them were quite inspiring. Another evening there was a hike up a mountainside to an outdoor chapel space where a service of forgiveness was held, similar to what is done in church on Forgiveness Sunday Vespers. Perhaps the highlight of the week was the visitation of the Panagia in the form of a miraculous icon. About three years ago an icon made by the nuns of Agia Skepi started exuding myrrh. This icon is in the parish of St. George in Taylor, PA which is sort of near Scranton, PA. Despite a complete lack of, and even the discouragement of publicity, this parish and this icon have become the focus of intense interest by Orthodox Christians, a site of pilgrimage. The parish priest, Fr. Mark Leasure, brought the icon to camp as a blessing to the campers and staff. We held a paraklesis service followed by about an hour and half of stories of miracles associated with this icon and questions and more stories as answers. Most of these stories centered around healings from heart ailments and cancer, too much to include here, maybe another time I will publish those notes. Fr. Mark Leasure emphasized that not everyone is physically healed and that prayers for healing really ought to be accompanied by Thy will be done, Lord. Then, after the blessing of hearing of all these miracles, we took some long period of time to anoint everyone with myrrh from the icon. Between the end of the service and before Fr. Mark Leasure started telling the miracle stories he called up the clergy and the graduating seniors and picked up the icon, tilted it and let a drop of myrrh fall from the icon into our cupped hands. He then went on to emphasize the importance of experience in the Orthodox faith and how this experience should strengthen our faith, particularly those who are going off to college and real life who will be challenged about their faith. I think we were in church from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and I don t think I really ever saw any restlessness on the part of even the 12 year olds at camp. The mother of God really gathered and kept everyone s attention. The spirit of contrition and love present was an experience I doubt I will ever forget. Undoubtedly, this was a blessing for all present. Back in 1988 there was another instance of a weeping icon at camp. Miracles occur at camp, but I think most of them are quieter, of the nature of subtle healing through confession or an unseen but vital strengthening of faith. I wish more people could have this blessing. Wishing you a blessed remainder of the Summer, +Fr. Mark

THE SOURCE AUGUST 2014 Page 6 VOTER ELIGIBILITY FOR PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS In order to be eligible to vote in the Parish Council Elections, an individual must be a member in good standing of the Parish, as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Requests for absentee ballots will be available in the church office. Please remember that if you do not turn in a pledge card, you are NOT eligible to vote in the Fall elections for Parish Council, NOR are you able to run as a candidate. August 31, 2014 is the deadline to submit your stewardship pledge card. **************************************************** AUGUST COFFEE HOUR Koula Kokos, Ann Megoulas, Peggy Orosz, Gloria Hampilos AUGUST EARLY USHERS 3 Georgia Lucas & George Keriazes 10 Paul Kokos & Kostas Pappas 17 George Mallios & Nick C. PARISH ETIQUETTE Venerating Icons The Orthodox Church teaches that it is proper to venerate, not worship, icons. The acceptable way to do this is to kiss either the hands or feet of the saint depicted in the icon, or the scroll, the Gospel book, or the hand cross a saint is holding. Please do not wear lipstick when kissing the icons since the residue will ruin them.

We now accept VISA, MasterCard and Discover Card.. The following books are our featured titles for the summer. They are part of the Orthodox Bible Study Companion Series by Lawrence R. Farley The Gospel of Luke Good News for the Poor $24 The Gospel of St. Luke has been described as the loveliest book in the world. It was written by a Gentile for Gentiles, with the purpose of touching their hearts with the Good News of Christ. Luke speaks especially to the poor and the marginalized of society including women with an emphasis on Joy, healing, and prayer. With his gift of making the fruits of biblical scholarship accessible to the ordinary layperson, Fr. Lawrence Farley expounds this beautiful account of the life and ministry of Christ for contemporary Christians. The Epistle to the Romans A Gospel for All $15 The apostle Paul lived within a swirl of controversy. False Christians Judaizers dogged his every step, slandering his motives, denying his apostolic authority, and seeking to overthrow his Gospel teaching. They argued their case loudly, and Paul knew that he must give the literary performance of his life. The result was the Epistle to the Romans, in which he demonstrates the truth of his Gospel a Gospel for all men and thereby vindicates his apostolic authority.

THE SOURCE AUGUST 2014 Page 19 First and Second Corinthians Straight from the Heart $16 The community Paul founded in Corinth gave him both joy and grief, for he was to encounter problems there of disunity, sin, and arrogance including a rejection by some of his own apostolic authority. His two epistles to the Corinthians came straight from the heart, as he appeals to them to live in peace, in righteousness, in generosity, and not to resist his God-given authority. His Corinthian correspondence abides as a lasting legacy, and a challenge for all churches everywhere. The Prison Epistles Philippians Ephesians Colossians Philemon $16 From the depths of a Roman prison, words of encouragement and instruction flowed from the tongue of the great Apostle Paul. Written down by scribes, his words went forth as a series of letters to Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire. The Apostle Paul may have been fettered and shackled to a series of Roman guards, but the Word he preached remained unfettered and free. Sheparding the Flock The Pastoral Epistles of St. Paul the Apostle to Timothy and Titus $13 What is the abiding significance of the epistles of the Apostle Paul to Timothy and Titus? In them, Paul teaches about how one ought to conduct oneself in the House of God, the Church (1 Tim. 3:15). As a loving shepherd, charged by Christ to care for the souls of men committed to him, St. Paul takes care to instruct others to shepherd the flock as well, and the wisdom born from such pastoral and loving care makes these epistles timeless and precious. These final three epistles of St. Paul remain as a testimony to his pastoral love and as an inspiration for those in the Church both the shepherds and the flock to walk in holiness and love themselves. Universal Truth The Catholic Epistles of James, Peter, Jude, and John $16 The catholic, or general, epistles of the other apostles James, Peter, Jude, and John are sometimes overshadowed by the stirring theology of the great Apostle to the Gentiles, St. Paul. But these seven epistles are quiet gems of instruction, encouragements, and exhortation for all believers. Written at various times and locations and to differing audiences, the general epistles nevertheless share some common themes: endurance under persecution; living out the Faith in a hostile society; discerning heresy by its fruits namely, immorality and lack of love and resisting it, holding fast to the apostolic faith. As fr. Lawrence Farley deftly shows in this commentary, all these are timely themes from which believers today can richly profit.

THE SOURCE AUGUST 2014 Page 26 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 1000 Yverdon Drive Camp Hill, PA 17011 NON PROFIT ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Harrisburg, PA Permit No. 112 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source. We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required. Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance. Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
