1 THE SOURCE August 2013 Issue # 8-13 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA All Things Beautiful Dearly beloved, During the first fifteen days of August, our precious Orthodox Faith offers us the blessed season of Dekapentavgoustos ; wherein we contemplate the faith of the Theotokos, the one who was truly faithful until her last breath. Between the singing of hymns, one of the verses, reads: Listen, O Daughter, and see, and incline your ear, and forget your people and your fatherʹs house and the King will desire your beauty - καὶ ἐπιθυμήσει ὁ Βασιλεὺς τοῦ κάλλους σου. This is a sticking verse with much meaning. For now let us focus on the theme of the final word in this verse, beauty. To do this I offer you a lovely write up from a book called Orthodox Christian Parenting (p. 170) by Maria Eliadis (that is on order for our bookstore). I hope you will enjoy the reflection of beauty as much as I did. More importantly, I hope that the theme of beauty will frequently preoccupy your contemplation throughout these 15 days, and that you will discover many ways to apply what is indicated here. Finally, if you know a young couple who you are close enough to share this article with, I believe that after reading the article if they do, they will be very glad to have done so. +Fr. He surrounded us with beauty-from the smallest flower to the majestic mountains- all that He created reveals His beauty to the world. The soul of a child is drawn to beauty. However, in this day of increasing crudeness, we can t expect our society to provide the beauty that will nourish (continued on next page)

2 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2013 Page 2 a child s soul. Much of the art, music and architecture will nourish a child s soul. Much of the art, music and architecture around us are no longer used to express God s love nor the beauty of His creation. It is necessary for us, as parents, teachers and friends, to create the context for the expression of beauty in the young child. Beauty is naturally incorporated into the life of the Church. We see beautiful icons, radiant vestments, the faces of the clergy and the faithful. We smell the sweet fragrances of the incense. We hear the rich and beautiful melodies of the music, the softness of the chanting. Just as the Church is a place of beauty, so we can and should create within our hoes this same beauty and order. Even in the womb, babies can hear beautiful music and loving words from their parents. Icons, incense, and prayers can grace their bedrooms and home. Gentle folk songs, good stories with lovely illustrations, poetry, all help to train the child s mind to nourish itself on what is good and holy. Learning to love nature and animals, spending time in the outdoors, in the forest, mountains, seashore, teach the child to respect and care for what God has created. Our goal is to remind children of the angelic realm. WE use the natural world to lead the hearts and minds of the small child Godward. Probably the greatest impediment to this is the television. As children grow older, it is almost impossible to keep them from the influences of the media in our culture. At least in the tender years, while we are able, we can protect them. (The influence of the media is a huge subject by itself.) By limiting their use of television, we also allow our children to play. Amazingly there are many children who are so entertained that they do not know how to entertain themselves or to interact with others on more than a superficial level. They are unable to develop their own creativity or even be able to be alone and think. However, we don t seek beauty for its own sake; we wish for the beauty of the Lord to be upon us (cf. Psalm 90.17). The beauty of the Lord is revealed within us through te development of the virtues. We strive for the virtues of kindness, compassion, honesty, purity, fear of God, humility, love and patience. We struggle to inspire the virtues in our children. It is in our homes, first, that we especially undertake the work of the cultivation of the virtues. In the last part of The Path to Salvation, Saint Theophan the Recluse gives strong and direct teaching on how we are to raise our children in the virtues. Yet, the only way, to successfully apply his wisdom is to first have it as a part of one s own way of life. For example, he speaks of teaching restraint in eating and of eating at appointed times; of course, it is implied that the parents already follow this practice. He underscores the importance of a set schedule. He shows us to that to teach a child to follow God s will he must first learn to submit his will to his parents will. But a mother can teach this to her child only if she is submitting to the direction of her husband and both to the will of God. Even as we are working to create the harmony and beauty in our homes, we must also ardently strive to nurture the God-given beauty of His image in our souls. Prayers, study, Confession, Holy Communion are gifts our Lord has given us to lead us to Him; and we, in turn, teach our children to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness (cf. Psalm 96.9).

5 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2013 Page 5 PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners, August is a busy month. The first week our children ages 4-12 years will be participating in the Pan Orthodox Vacation Church School. This month provides us with many opportunities for spiritual growth. On Tuesday, August 6 th, we celebrate the Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Mt Tabor. The first fourteen days of the month is a period of fasting and preparation with a number of Paraklesis services. On Thursday, August 15 th, the Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated. The end of August marks the end of the Ecclesiastical Year. The Sunday School and Greek School teachers are busy preparing lessons for the new school year. Please make an effort to enroll your children in these programs. There are other organizations that are in need of participants: Philoptochos, GOYA, JOY, YAL, choir, senior citizens, altar boys. As a parish we are fortunate that we have all these active organizations that provide an opportunity for parishioners to join and enjoy the fellowship they provide. As a child in Greece I always enjoyed the festivities (panigyria) that occurred during the celebration of Panagia. Neohorites of the area are keeping the tradition alive with their panigyri in York on the first of September. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy. By the end of August, Barbush and Hoffman, Certified Public Accountants, should have checked over the church's financial statements and made recommendations about how we can improve our record keeping. Elections of council members is fast approaching. Please make sure that your stewardship card is updated so that you can be eligible to vote and run for the Parish Council. On behalf of the parish council, I wish many years to all the Panagiotises and Panagiotas, Marys and Marias celebrating this month and many Ecclesiastical New Years to all of you. In Chapter One, Article 18, Section 1, of these regulations, a parishioner in good standing is defined as: "Any person, eighteen years of age or over, who was baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church and lives according to the tenets of the Orthodox faith." The Uniform Parish Regulations also provide that a member in good standing is one who has met his or her stewardship obligation to the Parish. Under Article VI, Section 1, of our Parish Bylaws, this stewardship obligation is defined as follows: "For purposes of voting in the annual election of Parish Council members, a parishioner in good standing is defined as any member of the Parish who submits a completed stewardship pledge card on or before the end of the Ecclesiastical Year, August 31, prior to the elections on the third Sunday in November of each calendar year." In addition, Article VI, Section 6, of the Parish Bylaws provides that "Absentee ballots shall be made available to parishioners who for physical or health reasons are unable to personally cast a ballot on the day of elections and who are otherwise able, competent, and eligible to vote." Requests for absentee ballots will be available in the church office.

Joachim and Anna Society and the Philoptochos Society. The Society's first meeting of the next ecclesiastical year is scheduled to take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 3, in the Philoptochos Room. The guest speaker will be Dr. Nikitas Zervanos, who has served as guest speaker at previous Society meetings and is a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox parish in Lancaster and Director Emeritus of Family and Community Medicine at Lancaster General Hospital. He has a deep interest in and has written on the subject of Greek immigration to the United States and will make a presentation to the Society on The Greeks of Lititz, a community of immigrants from Greece who settled in the town of Lititz in Lancaster County over a century ago. If you would like to borrow a book, sign the blue notebook, fill in name, date and name of book and when you return it, be sure to list the date you are returning it by your original sign in. Also, some of the books haven't been returned to our library; please check your books and return Holy Trinity's books for the use of your fellow parishioners. Thank you. BOOKSTORE The bookstore is open after Divine Liturgy on Sundays. We have several copies of Father Arseny..., Crazy John and numerous prayer books for you and your children. Remember to view Orthodox Marketplace through the Cathedral website in order for us to obtain credit for your purchases. Mark intended to be a refresher course in Orthodoxy for long-time members and an introductory catechism for potential members of the faith. Topics to include: Who is Christ? The miracles in the Gospel of John, what lessons to draw? What about wealth? Environmentalism Church s connection to Judaism Feast days of Christ What is so special about the Theotokos? Holy Week and the Resurrection The Great Commission or our job as Christians Format: Bring an Orthodox Study bible (available at the parish bookstore) and join in the conversation. At the conclusion of this service, the priests pray for the health and well-being of all who are present and read the names for the living that are submitted to them. Please take a few moments and complete the form on this page. Please write clearly the first names of your family members so Fr. Kosta can pray for them. Κωνσταντίνου Κουργέλη, Lancaster, Πεννσυλβανία. ΓΑΜΟΙ Στις 2 Ιουνίου 2013 έγινε ο γάμος του Χαράλαμπου Ματάνγκου και της Καλλιόπης Τσόφλια στον ιερό ναό του Ευαγγελισμού, Lancaster, Πεννσυλβανία. Η Λεμονιά Κουργέλη ήταν η κουμπάρα. Στις 4 Ιουλίου 2013 έγινε ο γάμος της Στεφανίας Δουλγέρη και του Νταίηβιντ Γκλαίησερ στον Καθεδρικό μας Ναό. Ο Μπίλλ και Μαίρη Γουολλενμάϋερ ήταν οι κουμπάροι. ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΗ ΖΩΗ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΣ Το καινούργιο διοικητικό συμβούλιο (ΔΣ) του Συλλόγου Φιλοπτώχου Αγία Αικατερίνη επισήμως ανέλαβε τα καθήκοντά του με τις ευλογίες του Πατρός Κωνσταντίνου στις 4 Ιουνίου, κατά την διάρκεια της συνδυασμένης εκδρομής με τον Σύλλογο Αγίων Ιωακείμ και Άννας. Το καινούργιο ΔΣ συμπεριλαμβάνει: την Κόννυ Κυριαζή, Πρόεδρο, την Θάνα Γουώρντ, Αντιπρόεδρο, την

ΣΥΛΛΟΓΟΣ ΙΩΑΚΕΙΜ ΚΑΙ ΑΝΝΑ Οι Σύλλογοι Αγίων Ιωακείμ και Άννας και Φιλοπτώχου είχαν ένα συλλογικό εκδρομικό γεύμα στην αίθουσα κοινωνικών εκδηλώσεων του Καθεδρικού μας Ναού στις 4 Ιουνίου Πάνω από 70 άτομα ήταν παρόντα. Η πρώτη συνάντηση του Συλλόγου Αγίων Ιωακείμ και Άννας στο επόμενο εκκλησιαστικό έτος έχει προγραμματισθεί στις 11:00 π.μ., την Τρίτη, 3 Σεπτεμβρίου, στην αίθουσα της Φιλοπτώχου. Ο προσκεκλημένος ομιλητής είναι ο Δρ. Νικήτας Ζερβάνος, ο οποίος έχει μιλήσει σε παρελθούσες συνεδριάσεις του Συλλόγου, και είναι μέλος της Ελληνορθόδοξης ενορίας του Ευαγγελισμού στο Λάνκαστερ Πεννσυλβανίας, και Επίτιμος Διευθυντής Οικογενειακής και Κοινοτικής Ιατρικής στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Λάνκαστερ. Έχει μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον και έχει συγγράψει επάνω στο θέμα της Ελληνικής μετανάστευσης προς τις Η.Π.Α. και θα κάνει μία παρουσίαση προς τον Σύλλογο σχετικά με τους Έλληνες του Λίτιτζ, μία κοινότητα μεταναστών από την Ελλάδα οι οποίοι εγκαταστάθηκαν στην κωμόπολη του Λίτιτζ, Κομητεία Λάνκαστερ, πρίν πέραν του ενός αιώνος. ΕΘΕΛΟΝΤΙΚΗ ΑΙΜΟΔΟΣΙΑ ΑΧΕΠΑ, ΠΑΡΑΡΤΗΜΑ 64 Η επόμενη εθελοντική αιματοδοσία στον Καθεδρικό μας Ναό είναι προγραμματισμένη για τις 8 Σεπτεμβρίου Δώστε το «δώρο της ζωής». Επίσης προγραμματίζεται τάξη επανεκπαίδευσης και επαναπιστοποίησης (recertification) για πρώτες βοήθειες σε περιπτώσεις καρδιακής προσβολής με διδακτικό πρόγραμμα για καρδιακές μαλάξεις και χρήση εξωτερικού αυτόματου καρδιακού απινιδωτή (automatic external defibrillator - CPR/AED training). ΕΓΚΕΚΡΙΜΕΝΟΙ ΨΗΦΟΦΟΡΟΙ, ΕΚΛΟΓΕΣ ΔΣ Για να είσθε εγκεκριμένος ψηφοφόρος για τις εκλογές του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου (ΔΣ) της ενορίας, ένας ενορίτης πρέπει να είναι σε καλή κατάσταση κι εν ενεργεία εντός της ενορίας, όπως αυτό καθορίζεται στους Ομοιόμορφους Ενοριακούς Κανονισμούς της Ελληνορθόδοξης Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής. Στο Κεφ. 1, Άρθρο 18, Παράγρ. 1, αυτών των κανονισμών, ο/η εν καλή κατάσταση κι εν ενεργεία ενορίτης καθορίζεται ως: «Πάν άτομον βεβαπτισμένον ή γενόμενον δεκτόν εις την Εκκλησίαν δια του μυστηρίου του Χρίσματος συμφώνως προς τους κανόνας της Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας αποτελεί μέλος της Ενορίας». Ο/η ενεργός ενορίτης πρέπει να είναι ηλικίας τουλάχιστον 18 ετών και να «εφαρμόζει άπαντα τα θρησκευτικά και ηθικά καθήκοντά» του/της «ως περιγράφονται εις την Παράγραφον 1» και «να εκπληροί την οικονομικήν συνεισφοράν

19 THE SOURCE AUGUST 2013 Page 19 (Stewardship) και άλλας συναφείς υποχρεώσεις έναντι της Ενορίας...» Σύμφωνα με το Άρθρο VI, Παράγρ. 1, του Καταστατικού Χάρτη της Ενορίας μας, η υποχρέωση οικονομικής συνεισφοράς (stewardship) καθορίζεται ως: «Για τον σκοπό ψήφισης (εκλέγειν) στις ετήσιες εκλογές μελών του ΔΣ, ένας/μία ενορίτης σε καλή κατάσταση καθορίζεται ως ένα οπoιοδήποτε μέλος της Ενορίας το οποίο υποβάλλει μία συμπληρωμένη υποσχετική κάρτα οικονομικής συνεισφοράς (stewardship) στο ή πριν από το τέλος του Εκκλησιαστικού Έτους, στις 31 Αυγούστου, πριν από τις εκλογές στην τρίτη Κυριακή του Νοεμβρίου κάθε ημερολογιακού έτους». Εποπροσθέτως, το Άρθρο VI, Παράγρ. 6, του Καταστατικού Χάρτη της Ενορίας μας καθορίζει ότι: «Ψηφοδέλτια απόντων θα είναι διαθέσιμα σε ενορίτες οι οποίοι/οποίες λόγω φυσικής κατάστασης ή λόγους υγείας αδυνατούν προσωπικώς να ψηφίσουν την ημέρα των εκλογών και οι οποίοι/οποίες άλλως είναι ικανοί/ικανές, αρμόδιοι, κι εγκεκριμένοι να ψηφίσουν». Έντυπα αιτήσεων για ψηφοδέλτια απόντων ενοριτών θα είναι διαθέσιμα στο γραφείο της εκκλησίας. Εαν θέλετε να δανειστείτε βιβλία από την βιβλιοθήκη μπορείτε να υπογράψετε το όνομά σας στο μπλε βιβλίο, συμπληρώναντας την ημερομηνία δανεισμού και το όνομα του βιβλίου. Παρακαλούμε όπως επιστρέφετε τα δανειζόμενα βιβλία ώστε να μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθού και από άλλα μέλη της ενορίας μας.
