2 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE: Acts of the Apostles 20:16-18, IN THOSE DAYS, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesos, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Miletos he sent to Ephesos and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.' Από τη Μίλητο ο Παύλος έστειλε στην Έφεσο και κάλεσε τους πρεσβυτέρους της εκκλησίας. Όταν ήρθαν και τον συνάντησαν τους είπε: Εσείς οι ίδιοι ξέρετε πως συμπεριφέρθηκα απέναντί σαν όλον τον καιρό, από την πρώτη μέρα που πάτησα το πόδι μου στην επαρχία της Ασίας. Προσέχετε, λοιπόν, τον εαυτό σας και όλο το ποίμνιο, στο οποίο το Πνεύμα το Άγιο σας έθεσε επισκόπους για να ποιμαίνετε την εκκλησία του Κυρίου και Θεού, που την έκανε δική του με το αίμα του. Εγώ το ξέρω ότι μετά την αναχώρηση μου θα εισβάλουν σ εσάς λύκοι άγριοι, που δεν θα λυπηθούν το ποίμνιο. Ακόμα και από ανάμεσα σας θα βγουν πρόσωπα που θα διδάσκουν πλάνες για να παρασύρουν τους πιστούς με το μέρος τους. Γι αυτό να αγρυπνείτε, και να θυμάστε ότι τρία χρόνια συνέχεια δεν έπαψα νύχτα και μέρα να νουθετώ με δάκρυα τον καθένα σας. Τώρα, αδελφοί, σας εμπιστεύομαι στον Θεό και στο κήρυγμα που σας αποκάλυψε η χάρη του. Αυτός μπορεί να σας κάνει ώριμους στην πίστη και να σας δώσει την επουράνια ζωή μαζί με όλους όσοι είναι δικοί του. Ασήμι η χρυσάφι η ιματισμό από κανένα δεν ζήτησα. Εσείς οι ίδιοι ξέρετε ότι για τις ανάγκες τις δικές μου και των συνοδών μου δούλεψαν αυτά εδώ τα χέρια. Να θυμάστε τα λόγια του Κυρίου μας Ιησού, που είπε: καλύτερο είναι να δίνεις παρά να παίρνεις. Αφού είπε αυτά τα λόγια, γονάτισε αυτός κι όλοι εκείνοι και προσευχήθηκε. THE GOSPEL Fathers of the 1st Council The Gospel According to John 17:1-13 At that time, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all 2

3 whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, you glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made. "I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are mine; all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves." Εσύ του έδωσες εξουσία πάνω σε όλους τους ανθρώπους έτσι θα δώσει κι αυ-τός την αιώνια ζωή σε όλους αυτούς που του εμπιστεύτηκες. Και να ποια είναι η αιώνια ζωή: Να αναγνωρίζουν οι άνθρωποι εσένα ως το μόνο αληθινό Θεό, καθώς κι εκείνον που έστειλες, τον Ιησού Χριστό. Εγώ φανέρωσα τη δόξα σου πάνω στη γη, αφού ολοκλήρωσα το έργο που μου ανέθεσες να κάνω. Τώρα λοιπόν εσύ, Πατέρα, δόξασέ με κοντά σ εσένα με τη δόξα που είχα κοντά σου προτού να γίνει ο κόσμος. «Εγώ σε έκανα γνωστό στους ανθρώπους που τους πήρες μέσα από τον κόσμο και μου τους εμπιστεύτηκες. Ανήκαν σ εσένα, κι εσύ τους έδωσες σ εμένα, κι έχουν δεχτεί το λόγο σου. Αυτοί τώρα ξέρουν πως όλα όσα μου έδωσες προέρχονται από σένα γιατί τις διδαχές που μου έδωσες, εγώ τις έδωσα σ αυτούς, κι αυτοί τις δέχτηκαν και αναγνώρι-σαν πως πραγματικά από σένα προέρχομαι, και πίστεψαν πως εσύ με έστειλες στον κόσμο. Εγώ γι αυτούς παρακαλώ. Δεν παρακαλώ για τον κόσμο αλλά γι αυτούς που μου έδωσες, γιατί ανήκουν σ εσένα. Κι όλα όσα εί-ναι δικά μου είναι και δικά σου, και τα δικά σου είναι και δικά μου, και δι αυτών θα φανερωθεί η δόξα μου. Τώρα δεν είμαι πια μέσα στον κόσμο ενώ αυτοί μένουν μέσα στον κόσμο, κι εγώ έρχομαι σ εσένα. Άγιε Πατέρα, διατήρησέ τους στην πίστη με τη δύναμη του ονόματός σου που μου χάρισες, για να μείνουν ενωμένοι όπως εμείς. Όταν ήμουν μαζί τους στον κόσμο, εγώ τους διατηρούσα στην πίστη με τη δύναμη του ονόματός σου αυτούς που μου έδωσες τους φύλαξα, και κανένας απ αυτούς δε χάθηκε, παρά μόνο ο άνθρωπος της απώ-λειας, για να εκπληρωθούν τα λόγια της Γραφής. Τώρα όμως έρ-χομαι σ εσένα, και τα λέω αυτά όσο είμαι ακόμα στον κόσμο, ώστε να έχουν τη δική μου τη χαρά μέσα τους σ όλη την πληρότητά της. With about 300 families, that means we could come close to sponsoring the whole year if every family would take a single day. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN O God, our heavenly Father, Who loves mankind and is a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant(s) (names), for whom I humbly pray to You, and whom I commend to Your gracious care and protection. O God, be their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love and fear, doing Your will in all things. Give them grace and mercy so that they may be patient, hard working, tireless, devout, and charitable. If you cannot prepare kolyva, Stavroula Letsos has once again offered to donate her time and talent to make the kolyva for those that wish to have the Church make them. Η δωρεά είναι $ 10. MNEMOSYNON - MEMORIAL The Mnemosynon or memorial service is a rite of prayers practiced in the Orthodox Church for the Departed Faithful. In Memory of the departed, boiled wheat called Koliva is properly prepared and brought to the church. In front of the altar you will see a table with 2 candles and a white cake. This is the Koliva. The boiled wheat is symbolic of the Resurrection. The people thus express their hope and conviction in the resurrection of the dead and eternal life. Jesus himself said, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. ( John 12:24). Just as a grain of wheat must first be planted in the ground to take root and bear fruit, man is buried in the earth because of death, but with the promise of resurrection. As we receive Koliva at the conclusion of the memorial service we are reminded of the departed Soul, and the bereaved make a special appeal to us to pray with them for his salvation. If the family wishes, Koliva can be offered in the Church three days after the death which is representative of the Holy Trinity, nine days - representative of the nine orders of saints, forty days - which is the traditional Old Testament mourning period and annually thereafter also they can be offered at the Saturday s of Souls. The bereaved also invite us to partake in a luncheon. This luncheon consists of fish because meat is served on festive occasions. The Family of the departed thanks you for joining us in our prayers. 11

12 Πνευμτικοί λόγοι εις το Ευαγγέλιο της Κυριακή των Αγίων Πατέρων Του Αρχιμανδρίτου Παϊσίου Λαρεντζάκη Ιεροκήρυκος της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Κρήτης Πάτερ ἃγιε τήρησον αὐτούς... Η αρχιερατική προσευχή του Κυρίου μας, περιλαμβάνει όλους τους ανθρώπους όλων των αιώνων. Δίνει όμως και μια ιδιαίτερη θέση σ όσους δέχθηκαν και θα δεχθούν την σπορά του θείου λόγου σαν γη αγαθή και καρποφόρα. Γι αυτό ο Κύριος την υπέροχη και εξειρετική αυτή ώρα της επικοινωνίας του με τον Θεό Πατέρα, μεσιτεύει θερμότερα για εκείνους που πίστευσαν και θα πιστεύσουν σ Εκείνο που τον έστειλε και σ Αυτόν. Γι αυτούς παρακαλεί τον Πατέρα του να τους πάρει κάτω από τη σκέπη του τώρα, που αυτός θα έφευγε σωματικώς από την γη. Όσο ήταν κοντά τους, τους φρουρούσε και τους προστάτευε Αυτός. Τους τηρούσε μέσα στον κόσμο, αλλά και αλώβητους από την επήρεια του κακού. Τώρα που θα έφευγε χρειαζόταν κάτι άλλο. Η χάρη, που θα τους διατηρούσε μέσα στον κόσμο, χωρίς όμως να επηρεασθούν από το πνεύμα του. Χωρίς να συσχηματισθούν. Να παραβούν τις αρχές τους. Να συνθυκολογήσουν με την αμαρτία και το πολύμορφο κακό. Πάτερ ἃγιε, τήρησον αὐτούς ἐν τῷ ὁνόματί σου ᾧ δέδωκάς μοι.... Ο Κύριος ζητάει από τον ουράνιο Πατέρα του να φυλαχθούν αυτοί οι λίγοι, γιατί αυτοί οι λίγοι, με τη ζωή τους, με το έργο τους και το λόγο τους, θα γίνουν τότε το αλάτι της γης, που θα δώσει ουσία σ όλη την άγευστη ζωή των ανθρώπων. Αυτοί οι λίγοι θα κρατούν ψηλά το όνομα και του Πατέρα και του Υιού. Θα είναι μια ζωντανή μαρτυρία. Και τώρα μέσα στην ψυχή μας αν δεν την έχει καύσει ο καυτερός ήλιος της μη πνευματικής ζωής, έρχεται το ερώτημα: Ανήκουμε σ εκείνους για τους οποίους προσευχήθηκε ο Κύριος Ιησούς; Ανήκουμε σ εκείνους για τους οποίους είπε οὓς δέδωκάς μοι ; Έχουμε καταταχθεί ελεύθερα στο μικρό, μα εκλεκτό ποίμνιο; Εάν ναι, τότε προσευχήθηκε και για μας, να μάς τηρεί ο ουράνιος Πατέρας μέσα στον κόσμο, αλλά και ανεπηρέαστους από τον κόσμο. Και συνεχίζει να προσεύχεται, γιατί έχουμε σήμερα στον αιώνα που ζούμε, περισσότερο ίσως ανάγκη να τηρηθούμε ακέραιοι, να σταθούμε όρθιοι στις επάλξεις της πίστης. Διότι η οχλοβοή, που σηκώνει σήμερα το κακό, είναι πιο δυνατή. Το ρεύμα της αμαρτίας πιο ορμητικό. Οι προκλήσεις πιο πολλές και τα αποτελέσματα πιο θλιβερά. Έτσι βλέπουμε πιστούς να προσαρμόζονται προς το περιβάλλον τους και να εγκαταλείπουν τη μια έπειτα την άλλη, όλες τις πεποιθήσεις, που ήταν λίγο πριν τόσο πολύτιμες γι αυτούς. Πίστευαν στον θρίαμβο της πίστεως και τώρα σιγά σιγά επηρεασμένοι από τα κηρύγματα της σύγχρονης εποχής ξεχνούν τον ιερό ενθουσιασμό που είχαν. Πριν η αρετή τους ενθουσίαζε. Ζούσαν με δικαιοσύνη, με τιμιότητα, με ειλικρίνεια, έστω κι αν δέχονταν ειρωνικά σχόλια ή έμεναν στάσιμοι. Τώρα μπροστά στις ίδιες ή και μικρότερες δυσκολίες οι δυνάμεις τους λιγοστεύουν. Και με την πάροδο του χρόνου συνθυκολογούν πρώτα στο ένα θέμα, κατόπιν στο άλλο. Πριν πίστευαν στην ιερότητα των μυστηρίων της Εκκλησίας μας. Σήμερα επηρεασμένοι από το κοσμικό πνεύμα υποχωρούν στα ιερά τους καθήκοντα. Πριν αγωνίζονταν να πολιτεύονται έντιμα, ειλικρινά. Σήμερα προσαρμόζονται στο πνεύμα της απάτης και του ψεύδους. 12

13 Είναι εύκολο να συνθηκολογείς με τις απαιτήσεις της εποχής, εύκολο να ζεις σύμφωνα με τα γούστα του κόσμου που ζει χωρίς Θεό. Αλλά ηθικά μεγάλος λογίζεται εκείνος, που μέσα στην ηθική αυτή κατάπτωση της εποχής μας κρατάει γερά τα ιδανικά, την πίστη, την ελπίδα, και ζητάει με αγώνα, συχνά και με θυσίες να εφαρμόσει στη ζωή του το νόμο του Θεού. Πως όμως θα πετύχουμε ένα τόσο μεγάλο πνευματικό κατόρθωμα; Αν νοιώσουμε ότι έχουμε χρέος να φανερώσουμε την παρουσία του Θεού στον κόσμο μας με την φωτεινή ζωή μας, την δημιουργική μας δράση, την προσωπική μας μαρτυρία. 14 Κυριακή των Αγίων Πατέρων Η σημερινή Κυριακή είναι η έβδομη κατά σειρά Κυριακή από το Πάσχα και η Εκκλησία όρισε να εορτάζουν οι Άγιοι 318 Θεοφόροι Πατέρες οι οποίοι συγκρότησαν την Α Οικουμενική Σύνοδο το 325 μ.χ. στη Νίκαια της Βιθυνίας. Το κύριο θέμα της Συνόδου ήταν η καταδίκη της αίρεσης του Αρείου, ο οποίος δεν μπορούσε να κατανοήσει ότι ο Θεός είναι ένας ως προς την φύση Του αλλά Τριαδικός στα πρόσωπα, Πατήρ Υιός και Άγιο Πνεύμα. Για τον λόγο αυτό δίδασκε ότι ο Χριστός είναι κτίσμα, απειλώντας έτσι τη σωτηρία του ανθρώπου που προέρχεται από το Χριστό. Η Σύνοδος με πρωτεργάτη το Μέγα Αθανάσιο, μετέπειτα πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας, καταδίκασε την αιρετική αυτή διδασκαλία διακηρύσσοντας την ομοουσιότητα του Υιού με τον Πατέρα. Εκτός όμως από την καταδίκη της αίρεσης του Αρείου η Σύνοδος ασχολήθηκε και με κάποια άλλα θέματα τα οποία απασχολούσαν την εκκλησία την περίοδο εκείνη. Τέτοια θέματα ήταν το Μελιτιανό σχίσμα, η επιστροφή των πεπτωκότων, h ημερομηνία εορτασμού του Πάσχα και η σύνταξη των 6 πρώτων άρθρων του Συμβόλου της Πίστεως. Η σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή αποτελεί ένα απόσπασμα από την αρχιερατική προσευχή του Κυρίου η οποία έλαβε χώρα λίγη ώρα πριν τη σύλληψη του. Η προσευχή αυτή λέγεται αρχιερατική επειδή εκφωνήθηκε από τον Μέγα Αρχιερέα, τον Κύριο ημών Ιησού Χριστό. Την προσευχή αυτή μπορούμε να την χωρίσουμε σε τρία μέρη. Στο πρώτο μέρος όπου ο Χριστός παρακαλεί τον επουράνιο Πατέρα να ενδυναμώσει τους μαθητές του στο έργο της διάδοσης του λόγου του Θεού. Στο δεύτερο μέρος όπου ο Χριστός παρακαλεί τον επουράνιο Πατέρα του να ενδυναμώσει τους ανθρώπους οι οποίοι θα πιστέψουν στο όνομα Του, ακούγοντας το κήρυγμα των Αποστόλων. Και στο τρίτο μέρος όπου ο Χριστός ζητά από τον Πατέρα Του να βρεθούν όλοι οι άνθρωποι κοντά Του στον παράδεισο και να απολαμβάνουν την δόξα Του. Μέσα από την αρχιερατική προσευχή ο Χριστός βρίσκεται σε διάλογο με τον Θεό Πατέρα φανερώνοντας την απόλυτη ισότητα που υπάρχει ανάμεσα τους. Μέσα από αυτό τον διάλογο φανερώνεται το έργο του Χριστού επί της γης, που δεν είναι άλλο από το να γνωρίσουν οι άνθρωποι τον Θεό Πατέρα. Τώρα που έχει τελειώσει το έργο αυτό και οι άνθρωποι γνώρισαν τον μόνο αληθινό Θεό ήρθε η ώρα να δοξαστεί ο ίδιος ο Χριστός μέσα από το εκούσιο πάθος και την ένδοξο ανάστασή Του που θα ακολουθήσει. Η αποκάλυψη του Θεού στον κόσμο διά του Υιού αυτού του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού δείχνει στον άνθρωπο την αγάπη με την οποία περιβάλλει ο Θεός τον άνθρωπο. Η γνώση του αληθινού Θεού και η πίστη στο Χριστό χαρίζουν στον άνθρωπο το μεγαλύτερο αγαθό που μπορούσε ποτέ να αποκτήσει και που δεν είναι άλλο από την αιώνιο ζωή. Αυτή την αιώνιο ζωή καλεί τους μαθητές του ο Χριστός να πάνε να την διδάξουν σε όλα τα έθνη και να βαπτίσουν τους ανθρώπους στο Όνομα του Πατρός και του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος έτσι ώστε να μπορούν να καταστούν μέτοχοι της. Η γνώση του αληθινού Θεού δια του Υιού αυτού Ιησού Χριστού από τους ανθρώπους, τους καθιστά υπεύθυνους ώστε να διαφυλάξουν αυτή τη γνώση ακέραια και ανόθευτη. Η διαφύλαξη ακεραίας της ορθής πίστης αποτελεί ζωτικής σημασίας θέμα για την πνευματική ζωή των πιστών που τους εξασφαλίζει την αιώνιο ζωή. Αντιθέτως η προσθήκη διαφόρων άλλων διδασκαλιών στην πίστη, πέρα από τις αποκεκαλυμμένες, δεν εξασφαλίζει τη σωτηρία, στους ανθρώπους αλλά τους οδηγεί στην δημιουργία αιρέσεων, στην αποκοπή από το σώμα της εκκλησίας και τελικά στην απώλεια. Ένα άλλο στοιχείο εξίσου σημαντικό το οποίο παίρνουμε μέσα από την αρχιερατική προσευχή του Χριστού είναι ο τρόπος επικοινωνίας που έχουν τα πρόσωπα της Αγίας Τριάδος μεταξύ τους. Ο τρόπος αυτός της επικοινωνίας είναι η προσευχή στην οποία βλέπουμε το Χριστό να καταφεύγει πριν από κάθε 14

15 σημαντικό βήμα της επί γης παρουσίας Του. Είναι κατάσπαρτη η Καινή Διαθήκη από παραδείγματα στα οποία ο Χριστός καταφεύγει στην προσευχή. Εξαιτίας όμως του ότι ο Χριστός όταν προσευχόταν ήταν μόνος του δεν μπορούμε να γνωρίζουμε το περιεχόμενο αυτών των προσευχών. Οι Απόστολοι όμως διαπίστωσαν την σπουδαιότητα της προσευχής βλέποντας το Χριστό να προσεύχεται συχνά και έτσι του ζητούν να τους διδάξει και αυτούς πώς να προσεύχονται. Το ότι γνωρίζουμε το περιεχόμενο της Αρχιερατικής προσευχής του Χριστού αυτό οφείλεται στο ότι αυτή έγινε ενώπιον Μαθητών του Κυρίου. Ένα μήνυμα που μπορούμε να πάρουμε μέσα από την Αρχιερατική προσευχή του Χριστού είναι η σωστή διαφύλαξη του ονόματος του Θεού όπως μας το έχει φανερώσει ο ίδιος ο Χριστός. Για την ακέραια διαφύλαξη του ονόματος του Θεού αγωνίστηκαν και οι τιμώμενοι σήμερα 318 Άγιοι Πατέρες της Ά Οικουμενικής Συνόδου αλλά και οι υπόλοιποι Πατέρες των άλλων Οικουμενικών Συνόδων όπως και πολλοί άλλοι κατά τη διάρκεια της ζωής της Εκκλησίας μας, έτσι ώστε να έχουμε σήμερα και να ζούμε την ορθόδοξη πίστη. Αυτό ας συνεχίσουμε και εμείς να πράττουμε ο κάθε ένας στην ζωή του έτσι ώστε να αξιωθούμε της αιωνίου ζωής κοντά στον Χριστό. Αμήν. Then we fill them with vacations at the beach, camping trips in the woods and flying to Greece or far-off places. It s no wonder that church attendance dips in the summer. But while you are relaxing, your church continues to be busy with regular worship, social activities, caring for sick and the homebound members, planning weddings, baptisms and funerals, and ministering to the hungry and homeless in your community. And your clergy and church staff still need to be paid, as does the electric company. So, here s the problem: The bills continue to roll in even when you re away, and many stewards have not planned to keep their offerings current when they are on vacation. That s why so many churches face a cash crunch in the summer months. But here are some ideas for how to help Your church Saint George maintain its finances in the summer months. Pay it forward Your church would love to receive your summer offerings or part of them in advance. If you know you re going to be away, plan ahead by offering more in the weeks in advance of your time away from church. This great and renowned sovereign of the Christians was the son of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler of the westernmost parts of the Roman empire), and of the blessed Helen. He was born in 272, in (according to some authorities) Naissus of Dardania, a city on the Hellespont. In 306, when his father died, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312, on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him, he marched into Italy, where, while at the head of his troops, he saw in the sky after midday, beneath the sun, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: "By this shalt thou conquer." The following night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (which is a banner or standard of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Licinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him once and again, and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Under him and because of him all the persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which he himself personally addressed. In 324, in the ancient city of Byzantium, he laid the foundations of the new capital of his realm, and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11, 330, naming it after himself, Constantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thither from Rome, it was named New Rome, the inhabitants of its domain were called Romans, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire. Falling ill near Nicomedia, he requested to receive divine Baptism, according to Eusebius (The Life of Constantine. Book IV, 61-62), and also according to Socrates and Sozomen; and when he had been deemed worthy of the Holy Mysteries, he reposed in 337, on May 21 or 22, the day of Pentecost, having lived sixtyfive years, of which he ruled for thirty-one years. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apostles, which had been built by him (see Homily XXVI on Second Corinthians by Saint John Chrysostom). As for his holy mother Helen, after her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant throughout the Roman Empire, she undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified (see Sept. 13 and 14). After this, Saint Helen, in her zeal to glorify Christ, erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Saviour was born, another on the Mount of Olives whence He ascended into Heaven, and many others throughout the Holy Land, Cyprus, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta, her image was stamped upon golden coins, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bithynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety, she departed to the Lord being about eighty years of age, according to some in the year 330, according to others, in

24 Η ΘΕΙΑ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ Η Θεία Κοινωνία προσφέρεται στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία μόνο στα άτομα που βαφτίστηκαν στην Ορθόδοξη Πίστη. Για να συμμετάσχεις στην Θεία Κοινωνία, πρέπει να είσαι σε καλή κατάσταση με την Εκκλησία πνευματικά (για παράδειγμα, οι παντρεμένοι άνθρωποι πρέπει να έχει ευλογηθεί ο γάμος τους στην Εκκλησία και όλοι πρέπει να είναι χωρίς σοβαρή αμαρτία στις καρδιές τους). To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting.
