When ou individual possibilities ae exhausted, the heavens open. This is the optimism offeed by the Chuh. Wheeas someone living with the deeption - o with the etainty, pehaps - that he is "enlightened" an neve eognise the geat light of God. When one omplaently feels that he lives in the light, howan he eve beome awae of the pesene of God's light? The Gospel, 1hen, stesses that it is only when we look upwad and outwad fom ouself that God eahes down to us, This is how the Saints lived : though thei self-saifie, though thei exteme humility, though thei sevie to the neighbou, 1hey wee in fat veneating and touhing God Himself. They bent down so lowly as to beome the fim gound on whih all ould tead with onfidene. This is why all of us, even God, "find est in the Saints". At the same time, howeve, "God is wondeful in His Saints ". The Saints deeased, and God ineased them and was ineased by them. The month of Januay, that opens the alenda, inludes many suh Saints who wee polaimed "geat" by the Chuh: Basil the Geat, the geat pophet John the Foeunne, Gegoy of Nyssa, Theodosius the Geat, Anthony the Geat, Euthymius the Geat, Gegoy the Theologian and John Chysostom. Alleluia." t is sung in a deeply solemn manne at the beginning of the Litugy of the Faithful, afte the Catehumens wee fomely dismissed, and aompanies the Geat Entane. This is the ase exept an the Thusday and Satuday of Holy Week when altenative entane hymns ae sung. Aoding to the histoian Cedenus, witing in the t 1th entuy, the Cheubi Hymn was intodued into the Divine Litugy at Constantinople by Empeo Justin in about 573 A.D. As the influene of 8yzantium spead, othe plaes adopted the same patie. Histoial evidene also indiates that it was not until the 6th entuy that Chuhes adopted the thee-pat santuay, no was thee till then anything esembling the Geat Entane as we know it in the Othodox Chuh today. Oiginally the Cheubi Hymn was sung without a beak and the Geat Entane would take plae duing its singing. Late (pobably about the 14th entuy) the Cheubi Hymn was divided afte T6v 6Awv un06e~6jevo (afte jjepljjvav in Slavi Chuhes) to allow the piest to make audible ommemoations duing the entane, the most impotant one of whih was: "May the Lod God emembe us all in His Kingdom, now and foeve, and unto ages of ages ". A pobable oigin of this stems fom the patie of the faithful to gathe aound the legy duing t~e poession, hoping to be touhed by the saed vessels, theeby to eeive a blessing, and to enteat the piest to emembe them in the payes he is about to say. Cabasilas says: "The faithful hant duing this poession, kneeling dawn eveently and devoutly, and paying that they may be emembeed when the offeing is made... Duing this eemony we must postate ouselves befoe the piest and enteat him to emembe us in the payes he is about to say." t is thought that ommemoations wee fist said quietly and gadually aloud, especially if the empeo o patiah wee pesent. The ental theme of the Cheubi Hymn is, "Let us lay aside all eathly aes to eeive (ut1oo.(6jlfvo) the King of all." An 11th entuy ommentato wote that the Cheubi Hymn exhots eveyone to be moe attentive fom now on until the end of the sevie, ejeting all lowe woldly aes as befits those that ae to eeive the Geat King in ommunion. Undestood in this way, the Cheubi Hymn appeas to elate to the whole euhaisti litugy, with efeenes to the Tisagion Hymn, the "Lill up you heats", and to the ommunion itself. St Cyil of Jeusalem (4th entuy) wote, "tuly in that most awful hou we aught to have ou heat on high with God... Let no one ame hee who with his lips an say, 'We lift up ou heats to the Lad' but in mind employs his thoughts on woldly business".
