How is it possible even fo a Chistian to ealise that the wod of God is an invitation to a adial hange in one's way of life and pesupposes epentane? Fo the Gospel does not and annot be made to fit the measues of this wold. Unfotunately, all too otten Chist is identified with a omfotable and easy life. Unfotunately, all too often people ompomise and find ways of sitting leisuely on the Coss. With the beginning of the new yea, when eah of us eflets on the sineity of his pesonal values and assumes vaious esponsibilities, enewing esolutions, the Gospel passage eminds that we should not depend on ouselves but on othes, on eah peson as it wee on God. t emphasises above all that it is though pain that God is found, 1hat when all hopes fade is God evealed, that in teas is God bon. When ou individual possibilities ae exhausted, the heavens open. This is the optimism offeed by the Chuh. Wheeas someone living with the deeption - o with the etainty, pehaps - that he is "enlightened" an neve eognise the geat light of God. When one omplaently feels that he lives in the light, howan he eve beome awae of the pesene of God's light? The Gospel, 1hen, stesses that it is only when we look upwad and outwad fom ouself that God eahes down to us, This is how the Saints lived : though thei self-saifie, though thei exteme humility, though thei sevie to the neighbou, 1hey wee in fat veneating and touhing God Himself. They bent down so lowly as to beome the fim gound on whih all ould tead with onfidene. This is why all of us, even God, "find est in the Saints". At the same time, howeve, "God is wondeful in His Saints ". The Saints deeased, and God ineased them and was ineased by them. The month of Januay, that opens the alenda, inludes many suh Saints who wee polaimed "geat" by the Chuh: Basil the Geat, the geat pophet John the Foeunne, Gegoy of Nyssa, Theodosius the Geat, Anthony the Geat, Euthymius the Geat, Gegoy the Theologian and John Chysostom. These and othe Saints wee alled "geat"beause they wee totally given to the sevie of Chist and neighbou - whethe though paye, witing, wod, food o any appopiate means that esponded 10 the need of thei fellow human being. This is the paadox of love - the moe one is shaed, the geate one beomes. t was Chist who taught that "the least is the geatest in the Kingdom of heaven " (Matt. 11 : 11). t is in humility that the Kingdom of God is ealised. t is in the Saints "the Kingdom of God is at hand" (Matt 4: 17). Fo the moe is onealed, the moe one is evealed by God and the moe one disoves God. F J. C. 3

Polyap was bon in Asia Mino sometime befoe 60 AD. He had the honou of knowing St John the Evangelist who eognizing his geat vitue, o dained him Bishop of Smyna. As a bishop he aied out his duties with apostoli zeal. Vey ealy he was the image of the people. His meeting with Bishop gnatios of Antioh, who as aested. was an emotionalone. He was lead befoe the poonsul Statius Codatus, who gave him the oppotunity of using Chist fo his feedom. But Polyap eplied: "Fo 86 yeas have seved Him, without Him eve doing me any wong. How an use my King and my Saviou?" Following this the old bishop went though muh totue without showing any fea. Sine the owd asked fo his punishment, the poonsul odeed that Polyap be buned to death. When Polyap was lead befoe the pye, he payed and thanked Chisl fo aepting his saifie. AftelWads he was thown into the flames. With geat astonishment the owd saw hat the flames fomed a wall aound he maty's body without touhing him. Then an idolate killed the Saint with his swod. t was the 23d Febuay 167 A.D. Now, thee was a time when a good deal of pimay eduation was devoted to leaning by heat long lists of dates and othe useful items of infomation. My Mothe, now well ove eighty. who benefited fom the legay of this Nineteenth Centuy peoupation with fats, an still eel off suh useful hains of infomation as the books of the Old and New Testaments in thei oet ode and the Kings and Queens of England with the exat dates of thei eigns. The moden histoian, howeve, will tell you disdainfully that honology isn't histoy and exat dates aen't as a ule of muh inteest in and of themselves. Pehaps. Yet, suely, we stili have a need lo the kinds of famewok that wee built up by means of thi s ote leaning. Cetainly, Fathes Miltiades and John Chyssavgis believe that famewoks based on honology ae of geat eduational va lue. Though like to think of myself as an ulta-moden hi sto ian, think have to agee with them. n this modeslly pi ed and well-podued litlle volume the authos have povided us with two highly in lomative honologial lists. The fist and longe is onened with the histoy of the Othodox Chuh fom the bith of Chist though to What we have in this pat is not just a list of dates and events, but also muh useful explanatoy infomation whih enlightens the eade as to the signifiane of the event. Foexample, the pinipal Counils ae not simply listed, but a bief aount of thei wok and its histoial impotane is added. The infomation fo this pat is based on two standad woks on the Othodox Chuh, F Alexande Shmemann's, The Histoial Road of Easten Othodoxy and Bishop KallislOS Wae's, The Othodox Chuh. Clealy. diffeent sholas would wish to inlude diffeent events, and so it would be totally uneasonable fo a eviewe to waste spae by listing events he pesonally would have inluded. Howeve, a eviewe shou ld note what lie thinks the iteia of seletion employed by his autho o authos wee. So let me just obseve that the emphasis hee seems to be plaed on events whih ae of institutional. politial (Le., elesiastial politis) and dogmati signifiane. The seond pat, whih all Austalian eades will lind of geat inteest, is of signifi ant dates in the histoy of Othodoxy in Austalia. Not only dates of note in the histoy of the Geek Chuh ae listed, but those of note in the histoy of the othe Othodox juisditions as well. n addition to the two honologies, thee is a shollntodution, whih tells us what the Othodox Chuh isand lists theautoephalous Chuhes with the numbes (in nealy all ases highly poblematial. though this is no fault of the authos) of thei faithful. Ae all the dates oet? Well, as said, am an ulta-moden histoian, so don't ask me! n any event. this vey useful booklet deseves wide iulation and wish it well.. Apx,en,oKon~<; AuoTpoAio<; 96 Viv, OT~ M Apoupv~, 6n AuvouoTou Moments in the Divine litugy The Cheubi Hymn The Cheubi Hymn is so alled afte its opening wods Oi T6 X poup i~.. The hymn eads: "We who mystially epesent the Cheubim and sing the thie-holy hymn to the life-giving Tinity, let us now lay aside all eathly aes that we may eeive the King of all invisibly esoted by the angeli odes. Alleluia." t is sung in a deeply solemn manne at the beginning of the Litugy of the Faithful, afte the Catehumens wee fomely dismissed, and aompanies the Geat Entane. This is the ase exept an the Thusday and Satuday of Holy Week when altenative entane hymns ae sung. Aoding to the histoian Cedenus, witing in the t 1th entuy, the Cheubi Hymn was intodued into the Divine Litugy at Constantinople by Empeo Justin in about 573 A.D. As the influene of 8yzantium spead, othe plaes adopted the same patie. Histoial evidene also indiates that it was not until the 6th entuy that Chuhes adopted the thee-pat santuay, no was thee till then anything esembling the Geat Entane as we know it in the Othodox Chuh today. Oiginally the Cheubi Hymn was sung without a beak and the Geat Entane would take plae duing its singing. Late (pobably about the 14th entuy) the Cheubi Hymn was divided afte T6v 6Awv un06e~6jevo (afte jjepljjvav in Slavi Chuhes) to allow the piest to make audible ommemoations duing the entane, the most impotant one of whih was: "May the Lod God emembe us all in His Kingdom, now and foeve, and unto ages of ages ". A pobable oigin of this stems fom the patie of the faithful to gathe aound the legy duing t~e poession, hoping to be touhed by the saed vessels, theeby to eeive a blessing, and to enteat the piest to emembe them in the payes he is about to say. Cabasilas says: "The faithful hant duing this poession, kneeling dawn eveently and devoutly, and paying that they may be emembeed when the offeing is made... Duing this eemony we must postate ouselves befoe the piest and enteat him to emembe us in the payes he is about to say." t is thought that ommemoations wee fist said quietly and gadually aloud, especially if the empeo o patiah wee pesent. The ental theme of the Cheubi Hymn is, "Let us lay aside all eathly aes to eeive (ut1oo.(6jlfvo) the King of all." An 11th entuy ommentato wote that the Cheubi Hymn exhots eveyone to be moe attentive fom now on until the end of the sevie, ejeting all lowe woldly aes as befits those that ae to eeive the Geat King in ommunion. Undestood in this way, the Cheubi Hymn appeas to elate to the whole euhaisti litugy, with efeenes to the Tisagion Hymn, the "Lill up you heats", and to the ommunion itself. St Cyil of Jeusalem (4th entuy) wote, "tuly in that most awful hou we aught to have ou heat on high with God... Let no one ame hee who with his lips an say, 'We lift up ou heats to the Lad' but in mind employs his thoughts on woldly business". As un06 xo~0 (uno6 ~6~ vo, is the futue patiiple) is a tem ommonly used fo the eeption of Holy Communion, the Cheubi Hymn antiipates this ommunion. JvdH 5

6 THE LMA DOCUMENT A Response to Baptism, Euhaist and Ministy (BEM), Faith and Ode Pape No. 111, Wold Counil of Chuhes, on behalf of the Canonial Othodox Chuhes in Austalia n n 1. Peamble. The Canonial Othodox Juisditions in Austalia, being neithe autoephalous no autonomous, ae esponsible to thei espetive Holy Synods outside of Austalia, and ae theefoe unable to espond on an offiial level to the WC.C. doument on Baptism, Euhaist and Ministy independently of thei Mothe Chuhes. With the fo mation of the Standing Confeene of Canonial Othodox Chuhes in Austalia (S.C.O.C.C.A.) in the vaious juisditions have, howeve, had a foum fo the disussion, unde the Chaimanship of His Eminene Ahbishop Stylianos, of loal issues of mutual onen, but as of yet onsultative poedues of a kind whih would pemit a ommon and detailed loal esponse to any suh a doument as BEM have not been established. t an be antiipated. howeve. that with the opening'. God willing, of S. Andew's Geek Othodox Theologial College in the fist Othodox theologial College to be established in the Southen Hemisphee - theologial onsultation between membes of the seveal Othodox juisditions wi ll be enomously failita ted, and thus a onsideed esponse to impotant douments suh as BEM wi ll beome possible. The desiability of some esponse on behalf of the Ot hodox Chuhes in Austa lia to BEM is. howeve. appeiated. and to this end it is hoped that the pesent vey bief statement, whih should not be egaded in any sense as an offiial doumen t. might pove helpful. The statement has been pepaed on the basis of individual esponses to setions of BEM by Rev. F E. Kentotis (Geek Othodox Chuh). Rev. F M. Lona and M S. Mileti (Sebian Ot hodox Chuh). Rev. D G. Popesu (Romanian Othodox Chuh) and in the light of the esponse 10 BEM by seveal bodies and individual Othodox theo logians oveseas. 2. Geneal. t is lea that BEM has been most enthusiastially eeived by the Othodox Chuhes. taken as a whole, as making a most signifiant step fowad on th e path to eoniliation and onsensus; and fo this, as Othodox Chistians. we give thanks to Almighty God. Geneal suppot fo the doument, howeve. does not mean that some esevations, fom an Othodox point of view, have not been voied. but these should not be allowed to loud he highly favouable esponse to BEM as a whole (as witnessed. fo example. by the atiles in 51. Vladimi's Theologial Quately, whih was almost entiely dediated to disussion of the doument). With espet to all thee pats of BEM. it is lea that the Othodox Chuh is able. ove all, to "eognize in this text the failh of the Chuh though the ages." 3. Baptism. This pat lealy does expess the faith of the Chuh as it is undestood by the Othodox Chuh. Some speifi points. howeve, should be made. (1) Some development and laifiation of Setion V. 14would seem. fom an Othodox point of view. to be desiable. n Othodoxy, Baptism is unde nomal iumstanes immediately followed by Chismation and the administation of Holy Communion, so all thee saaments onstitute elements of Chistian initiat ion. Disussion of the links between the thee saaments needs. we would suggest, to be developed futhe. (2) Some onen has been expessed at the temi - 6 nologial distintion between "believe's baptism" and "infanl baptism". Othodoxy does not egad infant baptism as a distint fom of Baptism. A baptised and hismated infant beomes a full membe of the ongegation of the laithful and is admitted to Holy Communion. Setion V.23 has been seen as a most onstutive hallenge by many Othodox to estoe the Chuh's anient patie of linking Baptism wi lh the Litugy and suh Geat Festivals as Easte. Penteost and Epiphany. 4. Euhaist. The beadth and depth of the Euhaisti theology of this pat of BEM has been widely alaimed by Othodox. Amongst points that might need laifiation. fom an Othodox pespetive. two pehaps deseve speial mention. (1) Wi th espet to Setion. 28. it needs to be noted that enewal of Euhaisti patie and onsensus on Euhaisti theology, while neessay onditions, would not be seen by Othodox as suffiient onditions fo inte Communion. Communion between Chistians, in the Othodox view, should be an expession of unity in the faith as a whole. Cetainly. the question of Euhaisti shaing a nnot be divoed fom questions e lating to the ministy. (2) Setion. 32. onening esevation of the Saament et, would seem to need futhe development. Aoding to Othodox teahing, the bead and wine undego an ievesible hange at the Euhai st and emain the Body and Blood of Chist. 5. Ministy. As with othe pats. the thid pat of BEM has been well eeived by Othodox. Howeve. ( t). the teatment of the saamental natue of Odination would seem to be in need of ampl ifiation. (2) t should be poinled out that a numbe of aspets of the ministy whih ae egaded as highly laudable by BEM - suh as the Episopay. Aposloli Suession, the thee- fold ministy et - ae egaded as fundamental to the Chuh by Othodox. (3) The eumenial amifiations of the odination of women seems to be undestated by BEM. Clealy a geat deal of futhe laifiation wi ll be equied. D G. Feeland 8 0 v. ET')aoo n pookuvlljo E i ~. AVi o u ~ T 6"o u ~, T;V VET PO Koi KW VOToVTlvoun o Alv T6 E$ETEVOV npoolo:lvujo Eie;. 8 + DMTROS By the mey of God Ahbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Eumenial Patiah. To all the faithful of the Chuh: gae. mey and peae fom the Saviou Chist bon in the ave "Gloy to God in the highest and on eath peae, goodwill to all men" (Luke, 2: 14). The angeli hymn one again esounds joyfully, binging the good news to all humanity of the bith of the Saviou. The Mange again eeives the nanate Wod, and the Sta of Bethlehem, despite the deep dakness in the wold today, leads suely the steps of the Magi to the Mange. ' The whole histian wold, having emoved itself on this day fom evey wodly ae, diets its way - so shaken by the geat aay of suffeings and tial that beset it - towads the humble adle of Bethlehem, whee by the geat ondensension of Divine Love, the heavens have been opened and the "hope 01 the Gentiles" is laid in a adle to hea the angeli himn and, with shepheds and wise men, to bend the knee befoe the Divine nfant, who has taken on himself the use of the wold. Ou most Holy, Apostoli, Patiahal and Eumenial See, a fellow tavelle in the univesal jouney towads the Mange in Bethlehem, is also taking pat in the ntenational Yea of peae with the United Nations, whih has enteed its fotieth yea and has dediated the oming yea 1986 to peae. The Eumenial See peahes fom the humble Fene the peae of Chist whih supasses all human undestanding and without whih the wold finds, and will find itself always in anguish. And, with the peae of Chist, it peahes and bings to mind the most basi fuits of this: bothehood, justie. and feedom; feedom of onsiene in patiula. The angeli hymn, "Gloy to God in the highest and on eath peae, goodwill towad men" (Luke 2' 14), was head fo the fist time with Chist's pesene on eath. This means that thee an be no hope fo tue peae without Chist, without His living pesene in ou life and in ou wold, but athe only fo false peae and a manipulation of the high ideal of peae. On the othe hand, Chist, who is "the file and the light and the peae 01 the wold", by His eve new ommandment of love and though the tansfomation of us men in His light, an bing an end to onflit and establish unending peae. "May the peae of God ule in you heats " (Col. 3: 15). Fo twenty entuies now the Holy Chuh of Chist has not stopped peahing His message and His gift, without tiing o despaiing. The Chuh alone peahes univesal peae and bothehood sineely and without alulation o ulteio motives and pays day and night "lo the peae of the whole wold" and fo the oming of that day when the human ae, in the wods of the pophet, "shall beat thei swods into 12. That Chistian Libay/bookshops be established in eah Community and Paish and that a omplete atalogue of English language Othodox books in pint fo the use of paents and hilden. 13. The vaiety of pamphlets bne podued fom time to time on issues onneted with the atehism and fomation of ou Youth. 14. That a speial ommittee be appointed to pomote the implementation of these esolutions. B ploughshaes, and thei speas into puning hooks: nation shall not lift up swod against nation neithe shall they lean wa anymoe" (Miah, 4' 13). And in what stak ontast stands the view of the wold today to the angeli host whih desends fom heaven and the Divine nfant lying in the mange! But the enomous diffiulties that beset the wold today have podued geat tibulations, filling the heats of men with anxiety, onflit, unetainty and anguish, enveloping, as they do the heat of evey man. The enstangement fom the ommandments of God, the disegad of the Divine Will, the manipulated establishment of peae and happiness in the wold, based on pemises ontay to the teahings of the Gospel, has ontibuted to the inflation of the ego of man, to the absene of love and espet between people, and a deline in the spiit of undestanding and onod in human elations. And so men today go out to meet the Pine of Peae having in thei heats, instead of peae, the anxiety of wa; instead of seenity, disode; instead of joy, bitteness and gief. Howeve, despite the ontinuing unetainties, anxiety and anquish besetting humanity, the angeli hymn shall esound again as a divine voie, announing to the human ae the geat blessing whih is peae, and eminding us that the misdeeds of men do not pass unnotied by the Most High. The divine voie, epeated though the bith of the Saviou as a eassuane that God does not deset the wold to its fate, elieves the ontinuing anxiety of the wold and fills eveyone with stong hope fo the futue. Duing this holy feast of Chistmas, "the feast of feasts", in whih the passions ae in tue, suspiions and pevese deeds emain at bay, may the hope of a bette tomoow visit evey one of the eath and may this hope give stenght to a mankind that lost its way. Enough of the "sound of ams and hosemen" (Miah, l' 13). Let us sineely epent and let us lift up ou hands "to the Lod of all the eath " (Mi. 4' 13), beseehing His enlightment and stength fo the building up of a wold of pemanent peae, joy, love, feedom and justie. With these thoughts, payes and hopes, we embae in bothely affetion on the geat Feast of Chistmas, the feasts pa exellene of divine love and peae, all the Most Reveend Pesiding Bishops and Ahbishops of God's Holy Othodox Chuhes, and we bless all the Othodox faithful eveywhee, uging them to ontibute tothe saed ause of wold peae. We geet the leades of ou site Chistian Chuhes and Confessions, and invite them to a stonge oopeation towads the maintenane of peae on eath. t is ou duty as Chistian leades a duty imposed on us by ou faith in the Saviou Chist as the Pine of Peae. May His Gae and boundless Mey, togethe with ou Patenal and Patiahal paye and blessing be with you all, Amen. Chistmas 1985 The Patiah of Constantinople, A fevent beseehe to God fo all of you. T n o

9 MESSAGE by His Eminene Ahbishop Stylianos on the oasion of the New Yea 1986 On the oasion of the New Yea, wish to shae with you etain simple th oughts, whih, feel, onen evey human peson egadless of one's own pesuppositions. We go though a simila poedue and outine evey twelve months: we lose ou aounts in elation to the past yea and elebate in advane the new yea. Without admitting it, we ae pejudied in ou behaviou. On the one hand, we dislike the passing yea, while, on the othe hand, we taitly expess ou favou in divese ways towads the oming yea. As if the passing yea left nothing wothwhile fo wh ih we should be gateful: and as if the new yea has no unpleasant supise, fo whih we should be aeful and autious! Suh be~laviou, howeve, is not only unjust in essene. but also bet. 's a lak of ealism. t makes us eat like ill-nutued luen, who want to blame a thid peson fo all thei failues, the so alled "sapegoat" o the saifiial vitim! O, again, who expet all thei suesses by some magial means fom a etain "good luk", athe than as it shou ld be, fom a oneted, esponsible and ambitious effot. Yet, beyond these hildish appoahes and supestitions, suely many ae those who onside time to be an absolute value and measue it avaiiously and passively. whethe fo the past, pesent o futue. These people think ommeially and do not hesitate to delae always that "time is money"! Between these two exteme a tegoi es mentioned above, namely the ategoy of the esponsible ones, who egad lime as the instument of fate, and the ategoy of those filled with anguish, who egad time as a mint woking day and night, thee is always a thid ategoy of people, that of the faithful, who eveently and gate! ully aept time to be a tem limit, an oppotu nity, an offeing. Whethe it is the old o the new yea, the faithful know that, behind time and beyond time, it is the Timeless God, "Who has put times and seasons in His own powe" (Ats 1: 7), who is vigilant. Thus time beomes a debt, given us so that we may tansfom it into a timeless, etenal value, that has no elation to money and all that is govened by money. God has given us time as a debt, so that we may poeed towads God, thus endeing time immotal. Thus time is evealed as a mystey, beause only in the mystey does the motal beome immotal, and the eated beomes divine. Theefoe, time fo man is not something indefinite and demoni, no again something altogethe abitay. t is a mystial plan, whih God has stated and man is alled to omplete, just as we give a plan to hilden fo olouing. With suh hitdish ambition and simpliity, with suh humility and tust let us aept the days and nights, the weeks and months, whih God offes us, dawn by Him fo us to olou. Only thus the impesonal suession of the moments of mathematial time will beome a esponsible pesonal welome, aeptane and eognition 01 the ethial time, whih is ou etenity in God. Amen. With fevent payes to God Ahbishop Stylianos LAW TERM SERVCE 1986 * t is indeed with geat spiitual pleasue that we meet one again in ou Cathedal in ode to pay with eah othe fo a blessed, peaefu l and fuitful Legal Tenn, The Gospel eading that we have just head is, believe, a su ffiient eminde of the links between eligion and law. Jesus went into the synagogue, as it was His ustom on the Sabbath, and ead fom the book of the Pophet saiah. All these elements and details: the time - Sabbath day, the plae - synagogue, the ustom as a nom, and the ationeading fom the Pophets, ae ategoies of law. Fo law is ode. And ode is hamony. And hamony is peae. And peae is well-being of people and gloy to God. Both testament people, Jews and Chistians, have always expeiened eligion in the fom of law. At the sa me time, they have always espeted law as a moal ode oming immediately fom God, even in the ases whee foensi law is inspied immediately fom natual law. The vey onept of Testament is a genuine legal onept. At the same time, howeve, law as an expession of a moal will is a eligious onept. do not think that need to elaboate moe on eligion and law in od e to make lea how the Chuh undestands the links between the two. The aleady mentioned inteation eveals a deep elationship between eligion and law based on the faith that this visible univese has a Ceato who is nol indiffeent towads its adventues. f law and justie always deal with intepesonal elations in thei legal and moal esponsibility, then it is quite lea that law and justie ae plaed on the same saed lavel as eligion. f the ultimate pupose of eligion is the sa lvation of man and the gloy of God, then it beomes obvious that the gloy of God an be ahieved only afte and th ough the salva tion of man. And this sa lvation is not a a tegoy onening the li fe beyond. begins aleady hee and now. And ou Lod Jesus Chist has passionately stessed the tuth that the Kingdom of God is within us. n this Kingdom and fo this salvation, you sevies ae oi unique impotane. We know and we app eiate deeply the fat that quite often you must ende justie unde manifold pessues and danges. even al the isk of you own life. This is why we always pay fo you. And this is why we shall always be immensely gateful to you on behalf of the whole soiety whih loves peae, od e and justie. 10 SANT ANTHONY Bon in Egypt duing the 3d entuy, St. Anthony depated into the Nita Deset and late to a mountain top nea the Red Sea in ode to tind solitude. His aseti tehniques fomed the basis of Chistian monastiism. He was the fist anhoite. 10 Anthony's path: motifiation of the flesh to the point of life. t omes to us all, this need to unbend the body, sway with the ease of palms at the height of a sand-s tom. He knew what mean: thee was no madness to the way he dismissed his pesene among things. They simply moved him. To aept eath as a gain of salt was his deam, and deaming is al/. Wy and aw-boned man, skin winkled by the sun - he hose a house to live and die in. But oh! the ventuesome eath was mofe than iust a gave: it bespoke solitude, the hane to give o f himself when giving had beome a hoe. How the deset honed him! Wits tied in hell wee the least 01 his laim to something beyond satiety. And those vigils at night - appentied to pain and an exempla who supassed what we all life. Chist! You almost boke him with you penhant fo gae and the veitable suffeing psyhe. Ah yes, those deams o f his. O should all them by thei othe name, lued as he was into in teminable visions of vie? The Temptations of Saint Anthony. Neithe union no lapdog ould eve begin to amouflage the innoene he felt wasn't in him. Fo, as a sepent, lust enveiled his loins into The Fall he'd only begun to suvive. The delusions of santity! High on Mt Colzim this man baiaded himself, alone with his make and the jan iss aies of doubt awaiting the onslaught fom within. Old Adam neve quite gave up tying. n the end the deset laimed him, a bundle of bones wapped in a won-out sheepskin. What moe ould he want than to lie at est in the dust he'd spung fom? To the gound the Spiit suited him. He gave up the ghost in the manne it had possessed him fom the stat. Deified at last! t ost no moe than a lifetime to pepae fo the dea th he'd been bon to : at est, his pesent onvolving with the past, his futue aleady at wok in the ell he'd quit so timelessly befoe. Poem by James Cowan, an Austalian, Othodox Chistian. LVNG THE LlTURGY* Satuday, Novembe 30th, 1985 t was indeed most appopiate that the 5th Annual Confeene o f Othodox Chistian Tetiay Students should begin in the midst of its theme - the Divine Litugy. Some thity patiipants, fom a egisteed total of 65, assembled spoadia lly in the Paish o f St. Spyidon at Kingsfod to attend the litugy of S. John Chyssostom. This day, the litugy was also ommemoating the fist a lled of Chist's apostles, namely St. Andew. They ae both plaes 01 in tense leaning. " These unexpeted yet didati intodutoy wods healded what was to be a most thoughtful and moving speeh pepaed by F. Steven on the "Litugy as Life". F. Steven ganted to most pesent a vision of the litugy neve befoe ealised - the sevie as seen though the eyes of death as well as though the eyes of life. The talk that followed was pesented by F. Leonidas and was entitled "The Litugy as a Mystey". This talk was equally thoughtpovoking as it seved to pain t yet anothe pitue of the manifold faets of the Divi ne Litugy. F. Leonidas deftly explained how th e mystey of the Litugy was its santifying medium whih ulminated in the "olleing of eation as a whole to the thone of God". Side by side. both talks spaked a multitude of questions. most of whih wee anvassed afte lunh when the delegates boke up into thee majo disussion goups.
