They followed with a win at Rice the next season and two more home victories in and The Owls posted a win in the All-College Tournament in and a home triumph in Oklahoma replied with a win in Norman the following year. OU won last year in Norman. LAST YEAR VERSUS THE OWLS Meeting for the first time since 1956, Oklahoma handed Rice a defeat in Norman on Jan. 5, 2008, despite shooting.431 from the field,.190 (4-for-21) from 3-point range and.565 (13-for-23) from the free throw line. The Sooners defense was better than their offense as it held the Owls to.291 field goal and.188 (3-for-16) 3-point shooting. OU also forced 22 Rice turnovers. Ahead 34-32, the Sooners used a 12-1 run to go up with 12:39 remaining. Blake Griffin nearly recorded a double-double for OU with 18 points and nine rebounds while Austin Johnson registered 12 points and a career-high six steals. Keith Clark added 11 points off the bench. Paulius Packevicius paced the Owls with 16 points and 10 boards while Rodney Foster netted 14 points (despite a 3-for-16 field goal performance). The box score can be found on page 25 of these game notes. MORE BLAKE Blake Griffin s recent string of nine straight 18-point-or-more games marked the first for an OU player since guard Corey Brewer netted at least 18 in 15 consecutive outings during the season. Lost in Griffin s gaudy scoring and rebounding statistics are some pretty impressive assist numbers. The forward ranks third on the team with 2.4 assists per game this season and has registered at least one handout in all 11 outings. Last season, Griffi n became the first Sooner standing 6-foot-10 or taller to ever dish at least three assists in a game 11 times. He has recorded at least three assists five times already this year. Griffin has posted Big 12 season highs of 35 points (vs. Gardner-Webb), 14 field goals (vs. Gardner-Webb) and 21 rebounds (three times). His six steals and 11 free throw makes in a game both rank as second most by a league player. Griffin has 30 dunks on the season, good for an average of 2.7 per game. Griffin owns the best vertical leap (no step) on the team at 37.5 inches, as well as the best max leap (no limit on steps) by reaching 27 inches above the rim. He also owns an 84.5-inch wingspan (seven feet and one-half inch). Griffin had plays No. 1, 3 and 9 on ESPN SportsCenter s Top 10 Plays on Dec. 10 (vs. Maine). All three featured dunks. DEFENSE, DEFENSE Oklahoma has allowed just 17 field goals in three of its last four games, the lowest number of opponent buckets this season. In those three outings, the Sooners held Tulsa to a.333 field goal mark, Maine to a.293 figure and Utah to a.340 performance (a combined.321 effort). On Saturday, VCU shot.407 from the field. Since USC went 8-for-11 from 3-point range on Dec. 4, OU s last four opponents are a combined 20-for-77 (.260) from deep. OU ranks third in the Big 12 in steals per game (9.6) and fourth in blocked shots (4.4). Taylor Griffin and Austin Johnson are tied for fifth in the league with 1.9 steals per outing while Blake Griffin (1.7) and Willie Warren (1.6) rank 11th and 14th. AWARDS CENTRAL Blake Griffin couldn t be off to a better start in terms of turning his Big 12 Preseason-Player-of-the-Year honor into the league s postseason player-of-the-year award. The sophomore forward was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week on Dec. 1 for the third time in three weeks to start the season. Griffin, who is only the second player in conference history to earn the weekly honor three straight times (Texas Tech s Andre Emmett did it during the campaign), averaged 25.0 points, 18.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in wins over UAB and Purdue to help OU claim the Dick s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off title. Similarly, freshman guard Willie Warren was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Dec. 1 for the second straight time after averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Warren was the unanimous choice as Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year. 7 BLAKE GRIFFIN SOPHOMORE FORWARD NATIONAL-PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR CANDIDATE BLAKE GRIFFIN NOTES Unanimous choice as Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year. OU s first AP preseason first-team All-American since Ryan Minor in Named the Big 12 Player of the Week each of the season s first three weeks. Only one other player in league history (Texas Tech s Andre Emmett in ) has won the honor three straight times. Ranks first nationally with his 14.4 rebounds a game and 13th with his 22.6 points a contest. Averages 2.4 assists (ranks third on team) and 1.7 steals while shooting a Big 12-best.672 from the field. On pace to shatter OU s single-season record for rebounding average (record of 13.3 per game was set by Alvan Adams in ). Has scored at least 20 points in seven of 11 games and finished with 18 (twice) and 19 in three others. Became first Sooner to score at least 18 points in nine consecutive games (guard Corey Brewer). Has pulled down 21 rebounds three times (versus Davidson, Gardner-Webb and Purdue). Has recorded multiple assists in eight of 11 games, including at least three in five of last nine contests. First Big 12 player to ever record back-to-back games of at least 20 points and 20 rebounds (25 points and 21 rebounds Nov. 18 vs. Davidson; 35 points and 21 boards Nov. 22 vs. Gardner-Webb). First Sooner to ever grab at least 18 rebounds in four straight games (18, 19, 21 and 21). No player had ever done it in more than two consecutive outings. Third Sooner to ever register six straight double-doubles (Alvan Adams and Garfield Heard). Has accounted for 28 percent of Oklahoma s points on the year, 40 percent of its rebounds, 45 percent of its defensive boards and 37 percent of its free throw attempts. Is already 52 percent of the way to his rebound total as a freshman (158 this year; 301 last year). Averaging 11.0 free throw attempts per game to lead the country (Stacey King set OU s current singleseason record of 8.9 attempts per contest in ). Needs 267 points to join Wayman Tisdale, Alvan Adams and Jeff Webster as the only Sooners to reach 1,000 during their sophomore season. Boasts five of OU s six highest scoring games and nine highest rebounding games. Recorded a career-high six steals against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 17. Has registered at least three assists in 16 of 44 career games (five times this year) and has at least two assists in 27 career contests (eight times this season). QUOTABLE It s not even close between Blake Griffin and everyone else right now to be the No. 1 pick in the June draft and also the National Player of the Year. Jeff Goodman, FoxSports.com (Dec. 8, 2008) Good as I ve seen. He made some shots early in the game and carried them. He s a big-time player. I ve never seen a physical specimen like that in college. He s under control. He s really, really, really good. Mike Davis, UAB head coach Blake is very talented, but it is his team-first, blue-collar attitude that truly sets him apart. The kid is just a winner. If you locked all of the college players in the country in a room and only one could battle his way out, it would be Blake Griffin coming out of that room. Jay Bilas, ESPN Note to Sooners: If Blake Griffin is open by a fraction of an inch for a fraction of a second, get him the ball. Rinse and repeat. He will score, get fouled, find an open man, solve the economic crisis, help a grandmother cross a street. Something good will happen. Dana O Neil, ESPN.com GRIFFIN S CAREER STATS Year G-GS MP-Avg.
