3 Aims and Objectives The Hellenic School of High Barnet is a non-political independent educational establishment providing education in the Greek language. We strive not only to teach our children the Greek language, but also to educate and enhance their knowledge of Greek and Cypriot lifestyles. This includes traditional costumes, dance and music, as well as the celebrations of national events in both Cyprus & Greece. We aim to pass on enduring values of our Greek heritage and at the same time display respect and appreciation of different beliefs and cultures. We are proud to boast one of the highest levels of GCSE attainment year on year, and are one of a handful of schools that take part in AS level and A level examinations. The school is a registered charity and receives no funding from local councils and limited support from the Cypriot Government. As such, we operate a syllabus that we find brings out the best in our children and helps to further their educational needs, as well as tackles the many issues that we now face as a school dealing with 3 rd to 5 th generation pupils. 3

Νεοελληνκή Γλώσσα Κοινωνικά Θέματα Μουσική Χορός ΝΕΟΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΓΛΩΣΣΑ Σκοπός του γλωσσικού μαθήματος είναι η γλωσσική ανάπτυξη των παιδιών, στο μέτρο των δυνατοτήτων τους, με την πρόσκτηση του εκφραστικού πλούτου της νεοελληνικής γλώσσας και την κατανόηση των δομών της για αποτελεσματική επικοινωνία. ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΚΑ ΘΕΜΑΤΑ Μέσω των Κοινωνικών Θεμάτων τα παιδιά του ΕΠΣ αποκτούν θεμελιώδεις εμπειρίες, γνώσεις και έννοιες συνυφασμένες με την ελλάδα, την Κύπρο και την Ορθόδοξη Θρησκεία μας, προάγουν βιώματα, διαμορφώνουν στάσεις και το σημαντικότερο αναπτύσσουν όλες εκείνες τις αξίες που θα τα βοηθήσουν να ζουν στη χώρα που τα φιλοξενεί ως νομοταγείς πολίτες, με Ελληνική όμως αξιοπρέπεια και περηφάνια. Γενικότεροι σκοποί των Κοινωνικών Θεμάτων είναι: - Η γνώση και η βίωση στην πράξη των θεμελιωδών αρχών και αξιών του Χριστιανισμού και η προσήλωση στην Ορθόδοξη πίστη και ζωή - Η αγάπη προς την πατρίδα - Η ανάπτυξη της εθνικής μας ταυτότητας και η ενίσχυση της κρατικής μας οντότητας - Η διατήρηση ζωντανής της μνήμης των κατεχομένων εδαφών μας και η καλλιέργεια πίστης και αγωνιστικού πνεύματος για απελευθέρωση και επιστροφή - Η εκτίμηση και ο σεβασμός των πολιτιστικών επιτευγμάτων των εθνικών και θρησκευτικών παραδόσεων του λαού μας (παραδόσεις, ήθη και έθιμα, στάσεις, αξίες) που συνέβαλαν στην εθνική και φυσική επιβίωση του Ελληνισμού στη μακρόχρονη ιστορία του, αλλά και ο σεβασμός των πολιτιστικών δημιουργημάτων των άλλων λαών και της πλουραλιστικής αγγλικής κοινωνίας - Ο σεβασμός των δικαιωμάτων του ανθρώπου και η υπεύθυνη δυναμική και συνειδητή δραστηριόποίηση των παιδιών για επικράτησή τους και στον τόπο μας - Η προσήλωση προς ηθικές αρχές και πανανθρώπινες αξίες. 4

5 ΜΟΥΣΙΚΗ Η Μουσική, ως δύναμη με πολλές μορφωτικές και διδακτικές αξίες, αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος της όλης εκπαιδευτικής προσπάθειας και διαδραματίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στην πνευματική, συναισθηματική και ψυχοκινητική ανάπτυξη του παιδιού. Τα παιδιά αναμένεται: - Να τραγουδούν με ευχαρίστηση και σωστά. - Να απολαμβάνουν, να εκτιμούν και να αποδέχονται την καλή μουσική και να επιδιώκουν να την ακούουν. - Να γνωρίζουν την εθνική μας μουσική παράδοση (δημοτικό τραγούδι), να καλλιεργήσουν το σεβασμό και την αγάπη προς αυτή, να αναγνωρίσουν το ρόλο και την παρουσία της μέσα στο παρόν, καθώς επίσης να τη συντηρούν και να τη διαδίδουν - Να χρησιμοποιούν τη μουσική, για να αναπτύσσουν πνεύμα ομαδικότητας, συνεργασίας, ευθύνης, πειθαρχίας και επικοινωνίας - Να γνωρίσουν κυπριακούς, ελληνικούς παραδοσιακούς χορούς και να χρησιμοποιήούν - Να συνδεθούν στενά με τις ρίζες μας και την πολιτιστική μας παράδοση ΧΟΡΟΣ Σκοπός: να βοηθηθούν τα παιδιά να γνωρίσουν κυπριακούς και ελλαδιούς χορούς και να τους χρησιμοποιούν για δική τους απόλαυση και κατά τις εκδηλώσεις τους. 6 Syllabus Nursery - Saturday 9.30am 1.00pm 3 5 years Incorporating activities to improve children s understanding of our language, Greek songs, poems, stories and conversation, as well as entry level dancing. Reception - Saturday 9.30am 1.00pm 5 6 years This class works on 6 topics Myself ( όs ) Family ( έ ε ) Clothing ( ύ Home ( ί Surrounding world, including topics on animals, nature. Colours ( ό s ύ Seasons ( όs) In each topic children learn basic vocabulary and language structures. Years 1 6 Saturday 9.30am 1.00pm & Wed 6.10pm 7.40pm (Year 3 on) 6 12 years Introduction to formal reading and writing of Greek language. Greek music and dance. Knowledge of homeland, including elements of history, religion, Geography & Greek culture. GCSE years Saturday 9.30am 1.00pm & Wednesday 6.10pm 7.40pm The Edexcell GCSE syllabus is followed. At the end of the course the children are expected to take their GCSE exams. AS and A Level Saturday 9.30am 1.00pm & Wednesday 6.10pm 7.40pm years AS level teaches Greek language, whilst A Level also includes Greek literature. Again all children are expected to take their exams at the end of the course. 6

7 School Terms & Regulations The rules and regulations have as their main purpose:- - To inform parents how the School operates and to bring to their notice their responsibilities and liabilities towards the School which their children attend and to make the children aware of their duties towards the School. - Compliance with these rules and regulations will help to create a more orderly and conducive environment for study. - Observance of the School rules and regulations is obligatory by all pupils of all ages. Registration: Pre-Registration for existing pupils intending to attend the School the following academic year is compulsory and completed prior to the end of the summer term, with any remaining places then being offered and filled usually on the 1 st day of term in September to any new applicants/ Greek Schools operate by placing children 1 year below the year they currently attend in English schools. So as an example if you are currently in Year 1 in English school, you would be placed in the Reception year in Greek School. Children who attain the age of 4 years at any other time during the year may be registered in the nursery providing there are available places, and we accept registrations for the new academic year from May onwards, with most spaces being filled by the 1 st day back at school. Parents of any other age group who wish to register their children can only do so after being interviewed personally by the Headmaster. These children may be given both a written and an oral test to assess their standard before being admitted and only should there be a vacancy in the appropriate class. School Hours: The school operates under a three-term year; autumn term, spring term, and summer term. School lessons are on: Wednesdays at 6.10 pm 7.40pm & Saturdays 9.30 am 1.00 pm Please note that pre-school, nursery, reception and Year 1-2 classes attend only on Saturdays. Whilst Wednesday attendance is not compulsory, it is highly advised. All children and parents should gather in the main hall at least 5 minutes prior to their start time in order for the head teacher to pass on important information and to ensure that teachers can take the children to their classrooms. Children are not allowed in classrooms without adult supervision. It is imperative that parents bring their children into school early in order to start their lessons on time. Lateness is disruptive for pupils and their teachers. 7

8 Absence: Pupils may not be absent from School or miss lessons unless there is a good reason justifying such absence. A letter requesting permission for these absences must be brought to the School in advance or in the event of absence due to medical reasons a letter is to be brought by the pupil the following day upon which the School operates and handed to the form teacher. Behaviour: The School hires the facilities from East Barnet School. Special care and attention must be taken by pupils to conduct themselves in such a manner so as not to give rise to any complaints from the staff of East Barnet School. Pupils are forbidden to touch, deface or otherwise interfere with pictures, books, maps or equipment belonging to East Barnet School whether inside or outside the classrooms. Pupils are forbidden to bring to school with them any item, which may be regarded as Dangerous or likely to cause damage to the classrooms or the equipment within the classroom. Children are forbidden to bring radios, ipods, MP3s or mobile phones to school. (Such items may, at the discretion of the teacher or the Headmaster, be confiscated during school hours) It is our school s policy for all students to remain in their classes during lessons at all times. Permission to go to the toilets should be given only in exceptional circumstances and under the supervision of an adult. If there is a medical need it is the parents duty to advise the head of the school of the child s condition. Teachers will instruct children to use the toilets only during the break and/or before and after the lesson. Classroom: Orderly behaviour, tidy work and good manners are required at all times Pupils must wait quietly outside their classrooms until they are invited to enter. Pupils must behave themselves in the classroom and carry out the instructions of their teacher in silence. Pupils will ensure that the classrooms are left tidy and clean after every lesson. Pupils are strictly forbidden to chew gum in classrooms Pupils are strictly advised to pay the appropriate respect both to the teachers and the adults Pupils should speak only when they are addressed by the teachers or when taking part in class discussions. If they wish to speak or attract the teacher s attention they should raise their hand. Code of Behaviour The school should display to the students the behaviour that it is expected to be followed. When enforcing discipline the teachers are reminded to refer to CODE of BEJAVIOUR on a regular basis. All Children should: Remember, stop and think before you Act! You are responsible for your actions. Show respect and treat others as you would like to be treated (No form of bullying is acceptable). 8

9 Walk sensibly around the school. Take care of our school, hall and the playground. (Put rubbish in its proper place). Only use appropriate language (swearing is not acceptable). Show respect for other people s work and belongings (ask before borrowing). Discipline If a teacher experiences a behavior problem he/she is advised to make a note on the behavioral record form and to inform the Head-teacher accordingly. If the situation continues to be a problem the teachers follow the instructions laid down in the Chain of Behavior chart (see pages 19-20). Pupils who do not pay attention during their lessons, disturb fellow pupils, regularly shirk from doing their work, cause damage, answer back or generally show that they do not respect their teachers/do not obey the rules of the school, will be reprimanded. The penalties aim to self correct the pupil and to maintain discipline and the normal working of the school. These penalties may include: Contacting and informing parents, payment for whatever damages may have been caused, suspension from school (maximum 2 weeks) and permanent exclusion from school (see pages 19-20). School Break: The Saturday break session takes place between and am. Pupils must not go into any area, which is out of bounds during break. Fighting amongst pupils, the bullying of pupils by other pupils, and the use of bad language will not be tolerated at school. Parents of children involved in such conduct will be informed by the Headmaster who may at his discretion suspend or exclude such pupils. Pupils will move in a quiet and orderly fashion in the corridors or on the stairs. Running will not be allowed within the school building. It is strictly prohibited for pupils to leave the school during school hours. Smoking: Smoking amongst pupils is absolutely forbidden. No teacher or parent is allowed to smoke inside the school building. Homework: Pupils will be given homework each day in accordance with their age. Homework is obligatory and not voluntary. In the event that a pupil is absent from school he/she is expected to find out from his/her classmates what homework has been set. Where pupils have failed to produce any homework the teacher will notify the Headmaster who in turn will advise the parents in writing. 9

10 Homework diaries will be given to each pupil, which will be the property of the pupil. Any homework that has been set will be written within. Parents are expected to sign these homework diaries each time as an indication to the teacher that the homework has been done. Language Library The school aspires to establish a language laboratory in which the children will have regular opportunities to learn the Greek language (alphabet, spelling, and grammar) with the use of a computer. There are various educational programs available that might be useful throughout the school. School Events: Every pupil is expected to attend each school event, these events occur during school term time and as such as considered vital to the growth of cultural experience gained by each pupil. Progress: Open days will be held each term and advance notification will be given to parents. Parents are expected to attend these, so that they can be informed by the appropriate teacher of the progress their child has made during the term. Progress reports will be given at the end of each term and a report card will be prepared for each pupil at the end of the Summer Term. The Headmaster will be available during the school hours to discuss any matter of concern with parents. Dance Lessons Both music and dance are part of the school curriculum. The teachers are responsible for their pupils supervision during the dance sessions. They should also ensure that the children proceed from and return to their classes in an orderly manner without disturbing the other lessons. The teachers should be present at the dance area and are responsible for their class behaviour during the dance lessons. Data Protection act Photography and Images of Children Conditions of Use: Parents by signing the registration form hereby consent for pictures to be taken and used by the school in accordance with the below school s terms & conditions. The consent is valid for 6 years from the date you sign it, or for the period of time your child attends this school. The consent will automatically expire after this time. We will not re-use any photographs or recordings after your child leaves this school. The school will be responsible for securely storing all the photographic images (stills and videos) at all times to prevent misuse, theft, etc. 10

11 We will not use the personal details or full names (which means first name and surname) of any child or adult in a photographic image on video, on our website, in our school prospectus or in any of our other printed publications. We will not include personal or postal addresses, or telephone or fax numbers on video, on our website, in our school prospectus or in other printed publications. If we use photographs of individual pupils we will not use the name of that child in the accompanying text or photo caption. If we name a pupil in the text, we will not use a photograph of that child to accompany the article. We may include pictures of pupils and teachers that have been drawn by the pupils. We may use group or class photographs or footage with very general labels, such as "a Greek lesson" or "making Christmas decorations". We will only use images of pupils who are suitably dressed, to reduce the risk of such images being used inappropriately. You can withdraw your consent at any time: if you wish to do so, please inform the school in writing. Fundraising and Social Events The committee organises various events throughout the year in order to raise funds for the school and to bring together children, their families, and staff to celebrate and enjoy the various aspects of Greek culture and communication. With this in mind, it is expected that parents will help to raise funds for the school. Listed below are some events, which prove to be both popular and enjoyable. Christmas Concert Usually held in the last week of autumn term, where children and teachers work together to put on a spectacular performance incorporating speech, song and dance, as well as wonderful costumes (usually prepared by parents and teachers). Following this is a visit by Santa who gives gifts to the children. Everyone is then welcomed into the canteen for delicious refreshments and conversation. Annual Dinner & Dance This is our largest social gathering. As well as being our biggest fundraising event, it is enjoyed by children and their families. It is usually held in a function hall; where we have music, good food, followed by dancing. The children from all year groups, usually dressed in national costume, then perform some traditional and modern dances for our entertainment. This is a wonderful opportunity for their families to see that their children are learning some traditional Greek culture and is the highlight of the evening. Raffle tickets are sold on the evening, with many wonderful prizes on offer. National Costumes National costumes are non-compulsory uniform for the annual dinner & dance and various other events. They may be purchased from the functions secretary, the cost is currently 35, which is paid just the once. When children outgrow their costumes parents are required to simply have 11

12 them dry-cleaned and returned to the functions secretary, who will then swap that costume for a larger size. BBQ S A traditional Greek BBQ is served during the summer terms, and dependant on weather and parent support, may also occur during the spring and winter sessions. Texas Hold Em, Quiz and other various events These events are organised during the year and designed to raise money for the school. Tuck Shop The tuck shop is run by the parents every Saturday at around am. The teachers bring the children into the canteen area where they are supervised and are able to have some food and drink brought in by them. They may also purchase drinks, crisps and chocolates from the tuck shop. Younger children are brought in earlier to avoid the rush! Parking When dropping children off at school please do not pull up and park at the drop off zone. This delays everyone else and can be dangerous. Park in the marked car park bays or if full, in Chestnut Grove. Sponsorship The school relies quite heavily upon the generous donations by individuals and companies, and is looking for sponsorship for particular events, such as the annual dinner & dance, sports day etc. If you or your company can help in anyway then please speak to the Chairman of the Committee or the Headmaster of HSHB. Fees Fees are payable via the two following options only: Paid in Full along with your registration on the first day of school (08/09/2017) Paid in 8 equal standing order instalments set up by the first day of school, with the first payment having been received by no later than the 30 th September We expect prompt payment of fees and reserve the right to suspend any child for non-payment or if late payments become an issue. The committee are available to accept fees in the committee area every Saturday and the majority of Wednesday s. 12

13 Class Fees for 2017/18 One Off Payment For Entire Year 8 Standing Order Payments Nursery Reception Year 1 - Year GCSE AS Level & A Level Parent Governors / Committee Members Unlike most conventional English schools the committee of the Greek School acts more as trustees, managing all day-to-day administrative and financial aspects of the school and generally dealing with the running of the school bar any educational matters. The committee is elected each year by the parents at the Annual General Meeting, and comprises of up to 13 members each serving a one-year term. The committee have fixed roles and meet regularly at the school to discuss items including: Administering affairs of the school Liaising between parents and staff of the school Creating and enforcing any of the non educational policies throughout the school Arranging the various fundraising and social events of the school Providing a welcoming environment for staff, pupils and their families. Annual General Meeting The AGM is designed so that we can inform the parents of how well the school is performing and to get feedback from the parents in any areas they would like to see improvements within the school. We also cover the financial affairs and discuss future plans of the school as well as appoint committee members. The next date of the next AGM is To Be Determined Action Group We also run the H.S.H.B. Action Group. Made up of an additional group of parents who volunteer a limited amount of their time or resources, they help with the smooth running of the school, or with the events held during the school year. If you feel you can help by devoting even a small amount of your time, either on a regular or semi-regular basis, please contact one of the committee members located downstairs past the main hall in the committee area. 13

15 How To Find Us Hellenic School of High Barnet East Barnet School, Chestnut Grove East Barnet, Hertfordshire EN4 8PU Through our School Travel Plan which was approved in July 2008, East Barnet School is keen to encourage 'Green Travel', and to promote the use of public transport. The school is served by good transport links as a means of getting to and from school. As part of our STP Action Plan we have installed cycle storage racks at both sites, enabling students to ride their bikes to school and store them securely until the end of the day. The 307, 298, 184 and 384 bus routes all make stops close to our Chestnut Grove site. Chestnut Grove is near to Cockfosters or Oakwood tube stations as well as Oakleigh Park Rail Station. 15
