It affects 7% of the population aged 65 years old and more than 35% of the population aged over 85 years. Patients fail progressively to meet the needs of everyday life and require constant and continuous care and monitoring. Therefore, it is a major scientific, 5

6 medical, social and financial problem, especially considering that the number of patients with Alzheimer's may triple in the next 30 years because of life expectancy growth. About 5% of cases less than 65 years old constitute the hereditary form of the disease, due to mutations in specific genes. 95% of cases occur randomly in families and constitutes the sporadic form of the disease. In this case, genetic changes (polymorphisms) in combination with other factors predispose to the disease. The lifestyle can contribute significantly, not only in the appearance of the disease, but also in delaying its onset. Public awareness of Alzheimer's disease can lead to diagnosis at early stages of the disease and to adjust lifestyle accordingly. To this direction operate scientific associations, institutions and patients and carers organizations that exist in many cities in Greece under the auspices of the Hellenic Association of Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders. 6

It has great impact on the quality of life of affected persons, particularly those whose seizures are not fully controlled. Epilepsy has a multifactorial origin and a multifaceted expression. It is caused by clusters of nerve cells in the brain, which sometimes signal abnormally, causing seizures. Anything that can disturb the normal pattern of neuronal activity from illness to brain damage or even to abnormal brain development can lead to 13

14 seizures. Epilepsy may develop because of : brain wiring abnormalities, imbalance of nerve signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters, changes in important features of brain cells called channels, or a combination of these and other factors. Depending on the brain area affected and its physiological role, these disturbances of neuronal activity that occur during seizures may cause strange sensations, emotions, and behaviors. They also sometimes cause convulsions, abnormal movements, and loss of consciousness. In some people, seizures happen only occasionally. Other people may experience hundreds of seizures during the day. There are many different forms of epilepsy, and symptoms vary greatly from one person to another. About three-quarters of the individuals diagnosed with the epilepsies can control their seizures with medication or surgery. However, about 30% of them will continue to experience seizures even if receiving the best available treatment. In some cases, people experience a type of seizure lasting for so long that can cause brain damage and may be life-threatening. Having a single seizure as the result of a high fever (called febrile seizure) or head injury does not necessarily mean that a person has epilepsy. Only when a person has two or more seizures is he/she considered to have epilepsy. A measurement of electrical activity in the brain and brain scans, such as magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography, are the most common diagnostic tests for epilepsy. Research efforts need to be stepped up to better understand pathophysiologic mechanisms and to develop more effective therapies. Equally important is to raise awareness on the nature of epilepsy through public education, so that the lives of people with epilepsy are not adversely affected by stigma, prejudice, and discrimination, neither these persons face restrictions in their human rights, due to unjust legislation concerning employment, marriage, and daily activities, such as driving. 14

37 The event included speeches, posters, power point and prezi presentations, video projection and short plays on the human brain presented by students. The choice of subjects was done by the teachers in collaboration with the Assistant Professor Margarity Marigoula of the Biology Department of the University of Patras, member of the Greek company for the Neurosciences. Students had the opportunity to visit the Laboratory of Human and Animal Physiology in the Faculty of Biology and to watch : presentations in relation to the structure and functioning of the brain, microscopic preparations of the nervous system and behavioral experiments by Dr M. Margarity. The postgraduate students Alexander Kokkosis, Vasiliki Panagiotakopoulou, Anni Kaplanian and Georgia Tsapara and the undergraduate student Anthi Krontira were participating in this activity. On March 11 Dr M. Margarity, the Director of Secondary Education of Ilia Mr. Basilios Dimitrellos, the headmasters of the participating schools : Mrs. Lella Andromache, Mr. Komiotis George and Mr. Voudouris Dimitrios and the teachers Nika Helen, Gkiouleka Theodora and Charmpali Julia gave a press conference in the local media (in channels: ORT and COSMOS, in newspapers: Patris and Proini) on the school conference stressing the importance of the transmission of knowledge about the functions of the nervous system to both the general public and the students. Also on March 13 Dr. M. Margarity and the teacher Mrs. S. Savvopoulou attended the live broadcast "Afternoon Together" on the local TV channel ORT. George Stathopoulos, Theologian, PHD Candidate Program of the schools presentations A. 4 th Junior High School of Pyrgos Ilias, Greece The Senses Land (retracing the structure and the function of the human senses) A group of 24 students comprising both boys and girls, of the 4 th Junior High School of Pyrgos Ilias, Greece has combined the art of poetry, dramatization, and other kinds of art such as: painting, sculpture, music, making jewellery and even the art of cooking to represent the structure and the function of the sensory organs (eye, inner ear, olfactory pituitary, taste buds and generally the somatosensation) and the human senses. Our action, under the title: The Senses Land is a part of an environmental education programme titled Nature, the perception and the misconception!. The preparation of the actions has involved team building games and the formation of several students groups with specific tasks to fulfil. Each group has been involved in and worked thoroughly on one of the five senses. Each of the groups has also come up with a characteristic. Therefore, five groups have been formed: Black eye (sight), Stick your nose outside (smell), You have deafened me! 38

39 (hearing), Sweet alchemy (taste) and You are insensitive (touch-somatosensation). Throughout the weeks, a number of experiments and lectures followed and a study visit to the University of Patras was realized at the Department of Biology, Laboratory of Human and Animal Physiology in order to enrich our knowledge background but also to cultivate a common understanding of issues pertaining to neuroscience and the nervous system. In parallel, the groups continued their study and came up with ideas for the presentation during the BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK Having planned our action as presented above, we invited constructive feedback from students so as to promote a spirit of collaboration. In our efforts to further strengthen our campaign, we decided to wear T-shirts with the same printed logo on them Eventually, our school group has decided to participate with a) an exhibition booth b) a digital audio-visual presentation of a poem c) a dramatized presentation of a debate among the sensory organs. Several works were on display at our booth such as: paintings on canvas inspired by the brain and the sensory organs (8 paintings altogether) attendees a stained glass brain inspired sculpture neuron's like jewellery bookmarks with information about the brain which were handed out to the hand painted stones (press peppier) inspired by the neurons a creation of a board game NEUROPOLIS a scrapbook with expressions and proverbs about the senses a scrapbook with drawings inspired by a poem a variety of food inspired by the brain and the sensory organs: jelly brain, pizza-eye, candies-eyes, brain like chocolate lollipops, cup cakes eyes a poster about the brain inspires us! In the first part of our presentation, the students presented a 4-minute video, a digital audio-visual presentation of a poem. Our students were inspired by an 39

40 unpublished poem titled: The Senses: the sensors of the soul by the poet Ioanna Katsikadi, an associate of the pedagogical team. The students painted what they had inspired them by reading the poem. This way they showed the talent of creation within them! The drawings as images and the recitation of the poem as sound, compounded a 4-minute video with the soundtrack reflections of passion" by the composer Yanni, who granted us the permission to use it. We feel that this music has contributed to a more successful approach to the interaction among the senses-the soul and the brain. The innovation of this action lies in the fact that the art of poetry was optimized to help the students approach difficult meanings in biology, given the age of the students, but also realize the determining role of the senses in the human development. In the second part of our presentation, the students preceded an original debate with the lyrics written and the music composed by the team. At the beginning of the debate, the main character, the interviewer and the anchorperson, Mr Brain Brainopoulos of the Central Nervous System welcomes the sensory organs and introduces the audience to the meaning of sensory receptors and the senses (at the same time, information was given to the people audiovisually through a power point presentation). Later, the sensory organs (Mrs eye, Mrs inner ear e.t.c.) present their function in a simple way. The first part of the debate ends and a 3-minute break follows with the presentation of the video Mapping the Human Brain. In the second part of the debate, the sensory organs argue about which of them is the most predominant in our life, while the somatosensation covers the topic extensively. The debate finishes with Mr. Brain who sums up and remarks that all five senses are necessary in life, but he himself is the most important and essential, indispensable and consequently the director of our life! Our presentation ends with the whole team on the stage giving the reasons why and how much they enjoyed the journey to " The Senses Land". Brain Awareness Week

Karatoula Junior High School «Sweet Dreams» Presentation Type: interactive presentation between public and students using prezi, a Web2.0 presentation software. Subject: The function of the brain during sleep. Dreams. Keywords: Sleep, dreams, REM & NREM stages, circadian rhythm, Web 2.0 tools, research, art, interdisciplinarity. Description: What does the brain do when we sleep? How are Dreams created? What is the importance of dreams in our lives? Dreams and prejudices. Dreams in the Bible and Ancient Greek Literature. Mythology and dreams. How has the dream become a target? These were the questions that tried to cover the students through this action. The approach of the Sleep-Dreams theme has involved interdisciplinary teaching subjects like Biology, Religion, Ancient Greek Literature, ICT and English. Furthermore, emphasis was given to the cultivation of cognitive and social skills and the expression of students' creativity through painting, crafts and digital projects created using Web2.0 applications. The preparation of the action included a didactic visit to the laboratory of Human and Animal Physiology, University of Patras, Department of Biology on in which the students were familiarised with scientific terms, which were presented with easy and understandable for their level way by Mrs. M. Margarity. There was a significant effort to integrate relevant to the matter scientific terms in the teaching of the course of English as much as possible done in a simpler way so that students understand the biological process of sleeping and the creation of dreams. To achieve this, the teaching was realised in two parallel lines: a. 'Working' on a scientific Greek text proposed by Dr. M. Margariy from which students derived data and information and b. Completing these data in the worksheets in english. 48

49 The innovation of the action lies in the fact that the interpretative analysis of the scientific text was projected via a prezi presentation (a platform of organization, development and distribution of "cinematographic presentation") in English focusing on keywords during the interpretative approach to the text. This initial presentation was enriched furthermore by the material collected by the students and then presented at the event. This action achieved the fruitful combination of Art, Science and Technology and it was very positive that it was developed under a collaborative team-spirit enhancing the creative autonomy of students. In particular, students were involved in the following: Describing and Drawing a dream: Create comics using the Pixton, an online comic book creation tool (Photo 3). Creating a bilingual dreambook (dream interpreter) in English-Greek. Conducting a research on the habits of sleep, dreams and beliefs about them, distributing questionnaires made with googleforms and conclusions were drawn with the statistical package SPSS17. Pupils focused on various modes of message transmission which is being carried out with electric pulses and chemical manner via neurotransmitters. 3. The causes of addiction to various substances.
