Dismissal Hymns Mode 2 When you descended to death, * O Immortal life, * then Hades You destroyed, * by the light of Your divinity. * And when the dead from the depths of the darkness You did raise, * all of the heavenly powers did cry out to You. * O Giver of Life, Christ our God, glory to You. Mode 2. For the Indiction. Fashioner of all creation, who made seasons and years by Your own authority, bless the crown of the year with Your goodness, O Lord, and preserve our rulers and Your city in peace, at the intercession of the Theotokos, and save us. Grave Mode. For the Theotokos. Rejoice, Maiden full of grace, O Virgin Theotokos; a haven and protection are you for all of mankind. From you did the Redeemer of the world become incarnate, only you are both a Mother and a Virgin. O Lady ever blessed and ever filled with glory, intercede with Christ God, beseeching Him to grant peace to the universe. Mode 1. For the Devout Man. You became a pillar of patience, O devout one, emulating the forefathers, Job in his sufferings and Joseph in his temptations, and the manner of the bodiless, though you were still in body. O devout father Symeon, intercede with Christ God, to save our souls.

This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony to which was borne at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. At that time, Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. Continued on next page

Church New Year The first day of the Church New Year is also called the beginning of the Indiction. The term Indiction comes from a Latin word meaning, to impose. It was originally applied to the imposition of taxes in Egypt. The first worldwide Indiction was in 312 when the Emperor Constantine (May 21) saw a miraculous vision of the Cross in the sky. Before the introduction of the Julian calendar, Rome began the New Year on September 1. According to Holy Tradition, Christ entered the synagogue on September 1 to announce His mission to mankind (Luke 4:16-22). Quoting Isaiah 61:1-2), the Savior proclaimed, The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to proclaim release to captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those And he stood up to read; and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke well of him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. 1 September who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord... This scene is depicted in a Vatican manuscript (Vatican, Biblioteca. Cod. Gr. 1613, p.1). Tradition says that the Hebrews entered the Promised Land in September.

As the volunteer coordinator this year, I am seeking volunteers of any age, to help at our Annual Cathedral Greek Fest. Your cooperation and participation is vital, as it takes many hands to make this 3-day event successful. There are many roles for volunteers to consider based on their skills, time availability and physical accessibility. Whether you re a parish member, a student needing volunteer hours, a kind-hearted citizen who enjoys volunteering at events or a neighbor who prides yourself on giving back to the community, we have a role for you. This is a great opportunity to make new friends and enjoy the beautiful grounds at the Cathedral Center in Brookline. For past volunteers, thank you for your continued dedication. This year we are hoping to expand our volunteer list which will help to streamline shift scheduling in order to free up more time for all to enjoy the event. Εὐστρατιάδης στὸ Ἁγιολόγιό του, γράφει τὰ ἑξῆς: «Λέξις λατινικὴ (indictio) ὁρισμὸν σημαίνουσα καθ ὂν κατὰ δεκαπενταετὴ περίοδον ἐπληρώνοντο εἰς τοὺς αὐτοκράτορας τῶν Ρωμαίων οἱ φόροι. Κατὰ τὴν ἐκκλησιαστικὴν παράδοσιν, τὴν ἀρχὴν τῆς ἰνδικτιῶνος εἰσήγαγεν ὁ Αὔγουστος Καῖσαρ (1 14), ὄτε διέταξε τὴν γενικὴν τῶν κατοίκων τοῦ Ρωμαϊκοῦ κράτους ἀπογραφὴν καὶ τὴν εἴσπραξιν τῶν φόρων, κατὰ τὴν πρώτην τοῦ Σεπτεμβρίου μηνός. Ἀπὸ τοῦ Μεγά ου Κωνσταντίνου (313) ἐγένετο ἐπισήμως χρῆσις τῆς Ἰνδικτιῶνος ὡς χρονολογίας. Ἔκτοτε δὲ ἡ ἐκκλησία Κωνσταντινουπό εως μέχρι τοῦ νῦν ἑορτάζει τὴν 1η Σεπτεμβρίου ὡς ἀρχὴν τοῦ ἐκκλησιαστικοῦ ἔτους». «Ἴνδικτον ἡμῖν εὐ όγει νέου χρόνου, ὢ καὶ παλαιὲ καὶ δι ἀνθρώπους νέε». Ἀπολυτίκιο. Ἦχος β. Ὁ πάσης Δημιουργός τῆς κτίσεως, ὁ καιροὺς 1 Σεπτεµβρίου καὶ χρόνους ἐν τῇ ἰδὶᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ θέμενος, εὐ όγησον τὸν στέφανον, τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ τῆς χρηστότητός σου, Κύριε, φυλάττων ἐν εἰρήνῃ τοὺς βασιλεῖς καὶ τὴν πό ιν σου, πρεσβείαις τῆς Θεοτόκου, μόνε Φιλάνθρωπε. Κοντάκιον. Ἦχος δ. Ὁ ὑψωθεὶς ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ. Ὁ τῶν αἰώνων Ποιητὴς καὶ Δεσπότης, Θεὲ τῶν ὅ ων Ὑπερούσιε ὄντως, τὴν ἐνιαύσιον εὐ όγησον περίοδον, σώζων τῷ ἐ έει σου, τῷ ἀπείρῳ Οἰκτίρμων, πάντας τοὺς λατρεύοντας, σοὶ τῷ μόνῳ Δεσπότῃ, καὶ ἐκβοῶντας φόβῳ Λυτρωτά Εὔφορον πᾶσι, τὸ ἔτος χορήγησον. Μεγαλυνάριον. Ἄναρχε Τρισή ιε Βασιλεῦ, ὁ καιρῶν καὶ χρόνων, τὰς ἑ ίξεις περισκοπῶν, εὐ όγησον τὸν κύκλον, τῆς νέας περιόδου, τὰς ἀγαθάς σου δόσεις, πᾶσι δωρούμενος.
