3 Ἀπόστολος Ἐφεσ. δ 7-13 Ephesians 4:7-13 Epistle Ἀδελφοί, ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Διὸ λέγει, Ἀναβὰς εἰς ὕψος ᾐχμαλώτευσεν αἰχμαλωσίαν, καὶ ἔδωκεν δόματα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις. Τὸ δέ, Ἀνέβη, τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη πρῶτον εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς; Ὁ καταβάς, αὐτός ἐστιν καὶ ὁ ἀναβὰς ὑπεράνω πάντων τῶν οὐρανῶν, ἵνα πληρώσῃ τὰ πάντα. Brethren, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Εὐαγγέλιον Ματθ. δ Matthew 4:12-17 Gospel Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Ἰωάννης παρεδόθη, ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν,καὶ καταλιπὼν τὴν Ναζαρὲτ ἐλθὼν κατῴκησεν εἰς Καπερναοὺμ τὴν παραθαλασσίαν ἐν ὁρίοις Ζαβουλὼν καὶ Νεφθαλείμ,ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος γῆ Ζαβουλὼν καὶ γῆ Νεφθαλείμ,ὁδὸν θαλάσσης, πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, Γαλιλαία τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὁ λαὸς ὁ καθήμενος ἐν σκότειεἶδε φῶς μέγα,καὶ τοῖς καθημένοις ἐν χώρᾳ καὶ σκιᾷ θανάτουφῶς ἀνέτειλεν αὐτοῖς. Ἀπὸ τότε ἤρξατο ὁ Ἰησοῦς κηρύσσειν καὶ λέγειν μετανοεῖτε ἤγγικε γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν. At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Why did he withdraw? He was serving as a pattern for us in instructing us not to seek out temptation but to withdraw ourselves from its sphere of influence. It is not a matter of reproach that one does not intentionally put oneself in danger. St. John Chrysostom

7 Martyr Hermylus and Stratonicus of Belgrade St. James the Bishop of Nisibis Saint James, Bishop of Nisibis received a fine upbringing. From the time of his youth he loved solitude, and for a long time he lived in the mountains around about the city of Niziba, where he carried out strict ascetic exploits: he lived under the open sky, fed himself with tree fruits and greens, and dressed himself in goat-skins. The monk passed all this time in prayerful conversations with God. During a persecution by the emperor Maximian ( ) he was glorified by a courageous confession of faith. Because of his strict and pious life the inhabitants of Nisibis chose him as their bishop. Saint James was glorified by his ardent zeal for the Orthodox Faith, by great miracles and by the gift of clairvoyance. By his prayers Nisibis was saved from 13 January The Holy Martyrs Hermylus and Stratonicus, Slavs by origin, lived at the beginning of the fourth century during a persecution against Christians by the emperor Licinius ( ). Saint Hermylus served as deacon in the city of Singidunum (Belgrade). Condemned by Licinius to imprisonment, he was long and cruelly tortured for Christ, but he remained unyielding. Hermylus mocked the pagan gods, calling them deaf, dumb, and blind idols. In anger Licinius ordered more severe torments for him, saying that he could avoid them if he would offer sacrifice. The holy martyr predicted that Licinius would suffer terrible wounds himself because he worshiped idols instead of the Creator. His words came true, for Licinius was killed in 324. After three days Hermylus was brought before the tribunal again and asked whether he would avoid more torture by offering sacrifice. The saint replied that he would offer worship and sacrifice only to the true God. Saint Hermylus prayed that the Lord would give him strength to endure his torments and triumph over the pagans. A voice was heard saying, Hermylus, you will be delivered from your suffering in three days, and will receive a great reward. The torturers fell to the ground in fear, and took the saint back to prison. Saint Stratonicus was one of the prison guards and a secret Christian. Seeing the agonizing torments of his friend, he was unable to keep from weeping, and he revealed that he was a Christian. They also subjected him to punishment. After the torture, they put both martyrs into a net and threw them into the Danube. On the third day, the bodies of the saints were found by Christians on the bank of the river and buried near Singidunum. 13 January an invasion by Sapor, the emperor of Persia. Saint James, among the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council, was one of the prominent defenders of the Orthodox Faith. A wise and educated pastor, he constructed a public school at Nisibis, in which he himself was an instructor. He made a strong impression on the hearts of his listeners by the high morality of his life. St. Gregory, bishop of great Armenia, turned to him with a request to write about the faith, and the Nisibis pastor sent to him by way of reply a detailed Discourse: about the faith, about love, fasting, prayer, spiritual warfare, the resurrection of the dead, the duties of pastors, about circumcision against the Jews, about the choice of foods, about Christ as the Son of God, and so on. He died peacefully in the year 350.

9 Οἱ Ἅγιοι Ἕρμυλος καὶ Στρατόνικος Οἱ Ἅγιοι Μάρτυρες Ἕρμυλος καὶ Στρατόνικος ζοῦσαν κατὰ τοὺς χρόνους τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα τῆς Ἀνατολῆς Λικινίου ( μ.χ). Ὁ Λικίνιος, ὅπως εἶναι γνωστό, γιὰ νὰ εὐχαριστήσει τοὺς εἰδωλολάτρες ποὺ ἀντιπαθοῦσαν τὸν Μέγα Κωνσταντίνο, διέταξε, περὶ τὸ μ.χ., διωγμὸ κατὰ τῶν Χριστιανῶν. Ὁ Ἅγιος Ἕρμυλος, κατὰ τὴν ἐκκλησιαστικὴ τάξη, ἦταν διάκονος. Ὅταν παρουσιάσθηκε ἐνώπιον τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα καὶ ὁμολόγησε τὴν πίστη του στὸν Χριστό, ὑποβ ήθηκε σὲ φοβερὰ βασανιστήρια. Πρῶτα τὸν μαστίγωσαν μὲ ἀγκαθωτὰ μαστίγια. Οἱ φρικώδεις βασανισμοὶ δὲν ἔφεραν τὸ ποθούμενο ἀποτέ εσμα. Στὴ δεινὴ δὲ αὐτὴ κατάσταση εὑρισκόμενος ὁ Ἅγιος Ἕρμυλος, κλείσθηκε στὴν φυλακή. Μετὰ ἀπὸ λίγες μέρες καταβ ήθηκε νέα προσπάθεια, γιὰ νὰ ἀρνηθεῖ ὁ Μάρτυς τὸν Χριστό. Ἐκεῖνος ἀπάντησε δοξολογώντας καὶ εὐχαριστώντας τὸ Ἅγιο Ὄνομα τοῦ Κυρίου. Μεταξὺ ἐκείνων ποὺ παρευρίσκονταν στὸ μαρτύριο τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἑρμύ ου, ἦταν καὶ ὁ φί ος του Στρατόνικος, ποὺ ὑπέφερε πολὺ γιὰ τὰ παθήματά του. Μπροστὰ στὸ θέαμα τοῦ μαρτυρίου τοῦ φί ου του, ὁ Στρατόνικος δὲν μπόρεσε νὰ κρατήσει τοὺς στεναγμοὺς καὶ τὰ δάκρυά του. Ἀμέσως τὸν συνέ αβαν καὶ τὸν κά εσαν νὰ ἀρνηθεῖ τὸν Χριστό. Καὶ ἐκεῖνος ἀκολούθησε τὸν δρόμο τῆς καλῆς ὁμολογίας τοῦ φί ου του Ἑρμύ ου. Τὸ μαρτύριο ἐπεκτάθηκε καὶ σ αὐτόν. Τὸν κτύπησαν καὶ ἀκολούθως τὸν ἔριξαν μαζὶ μὲ τὸν Ἕρμυλο στὸν ποταμὸ Ἴστρο (Δούναβη), ὅπου καὶ οἱ δυό τους ἐδέχθησαν τὸ μακάριο τέ ος καὶ ἔ αβαν τοὺς στεφάνους τοῦ μαρτυρίου. 13 Ιανουαρίου Κάποιοι Χριστιανοὶ ποὺ πληροφορήθηκαν τὰ γεγονότα, κατέβαλαν κάθε προσπάθεια, γιὰ νὰ βροῦν τὰ τίμια λείψανα τῶν Ἁγίων. Καὶ ὅταν, μετὰ τρεῖς μέρες, τὰ εἶδαν κάπου στὶς ὄχθες τοῦ ποταμοῦ, τὰ παρέ αβαν καὶ τὰ ἐνταφίασαν μαζί. Ἡ Σύναξη τῶν Ἁγίων Μαρτύρων Ἑρμύ ου καὶ Στρατονίκου ἐτελεῖτο στὸν εὐκτήριο οἶκο τοῦ Ἀρχαγγέ ου Μιχαή, ὁ ὁποῖος βρίσκεται στὴν περιοχὴ ποὺ ὀνομάζεται Ὀξεία (νῆσος τῆς Προποντίδος), στὴ Φιρμούπολη, ποὺ ἦταν κοντὰ στὴν Κωνσταντινούπολη, καὶ «ἐν τοῖς τοῦ Σπουδαίου» κοντὰ στὸ Ὀρφανοτροφεῖο. Ἀπολυτίκιον. Ἦχος γ. Θείας πίστεως. Δυὰς ἔνθεος, ὁμολογοῦντες, τὴν Ὑπέρθεον, πιστῶς Τριάδα, ἀνεδείχθητε πανεύφημοι Μάρτυρες, ὁ εὐκλεὴς καὶ ἀήττητος Ἕρμυλος, καὶ ὁ στερρὸς καὶ θεόφρων Στρατόνικος. Ἀ ὡς σύμμορφοι, ἐν δόξῃ τῇ ὑπὲρ ἔννοιαν, αἰτήσασθε ἡμῖν τὸ μέγα ἔ εος. Κοντάκιον. Ἦχος α. Χορὸς Ἀγγελικός.
