2 Sunday, February 1, 2015 Orthros (Matins): Divine Liturgy (of St. John Chrysostom) 8:45 AM 10:00 AM On February 1, we commemorate the holy martyr Tryphon of Lampsacus; our devout father Peter of Galatia; our devout father Bendimianos; our devout father and confessor Basil, Archbishop of Thessaloniki, who was from Athens; the devout Timothy reposed in peace; the holy martyr Theion, with two children, died by the sword; the holy martyr Karion died after having his tongue cut out; the holy martyr Perpetua and those with her: Saturus, Revocatus, Saturninus, Secundulus, and Felicity. The holy new martyr Anastasios of Nafplion, who witnessed in Nafplion in the year 1655, died by being cut into small pieces. From the Triodion. On this day, we remember the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee from the holy Gospel of the Evangelist Luke (18:10-14). Resurrectional APOLYTIKION Mode 1 The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. You rose on the third day, O Lord and Savior, ranting life unto the world. And therefore the powers of heaven cried to You, O Giver-of-Life: Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; glory to Your kingdom; glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind. APOLYTIKION for the Forefeast of the Entrance of the Lord into the Temple The choir of heaven's hosts, from the vaults of the heavens, bends forward to the earth and beholds as an infant the first-born of all creation being carried in the embrace of His holy virgin Mother unto the Temple. And with us they sign today a fore-festal anthem, in awe and astonishment. APOLYTIKION of Holy Martyr Tryphon of Lampsacus Your Martyr, O Lord, was worthily awarded by You the crown of incorruption, in that he contested for You our immortal God. Since he possessed Your power, he defeated the tyrants, dashing the demons' powerless displays of defiance. O Christ God, at his fervent entreaties, save our souls. APOLYTIKION of the Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation, The revelation of the eternal mystery! The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin. As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace. Together with him let us cry to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, The Lord is with You! KONTAKION of the Forefeast of the Presentation of the Lord With our hearts instead of arms today, believers, with most pure and righteous thoughts let us receive in our embrace the Lord and Master who comes to us, and let us offer our fore-festal hymns of praise.

3 EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 8:28-39 Prokeimenon: To the saints on His earth, in them the Lord magnified all His will. Mode 4 Brethren, we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies; who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, "For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Πρὸς Ρωμαίους 8:28-39 Ἀδελφοί, οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν τὸν θεὸν πάντα συνεργεῖ εἰς ἀγαθόν, τοῖς κατὰ πρόθεσιν κλητοῖς οὖσιν. Ὅτι οὓς προέγνω, καὶ προώρισεν συμμόρφους τῆς εἰκόνος τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ, εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν πρωτότοκον ἐν πολλοῖς ἀδελφοῖς οὓς δὲ προώρισεν, τούτους καὶ ἐκάλεσεν καὶ οὓς ἐκάλεσεν, τούτους καὶ ἐδικαίωσεν οὓς δὲ ἐδικαίωσεν, τούτους καὶ ἐδόξασεν. Τίς ἡμᾶς χωρίσει ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Χριστοῦ; Θλῖψις, ἢ στενοχωρία, ἢ διωγμός, ἢ λιμός, ἢ γυμνότης, ἢ κίνδυνος, ἢ μάχαιρα; Καθὼς γέγραπται ὅτι Ἕνεκέν σου θανατούμεθα ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐλογίσθημεν ὡς πρόβατα σφαγῆς. Ἀλλʼ ἐν τούτοις πᾶσιν ὑπερνικῶμεν διὰ τοῦ ἀγαπήσαντος ἡμᾶς. 4 THE GOSPEL READING Gospel of Luke 18:10-14 The Lord said this parable, "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." Helen Manuel's team will be hosting the February 5 dinner. PHILOPTOCHOS: Join us Sunday, Feb. 22nd after Divine Liturgy for a reception honoring our scholarship recipients. Donations will be accepted at that time for Philoptochos support of National Autism Month. HOPE/JOY: Our next meeting will be on February 7 th from 3-5pm (new time) in the Social Hall. We will be making koulourakia to share and enjoy. Our lesson will focus on love. Please RSVP by Wed. February 4 th to Anna (anna@feliberti.com or ) so that we know how many supplies are needed. ORATORICAL FESTIVAL: It is coming up fast!!!! It is for kids in grades 7-12 to participate. We will begin writing workshops on Monday nights starting February 2nd at 5:30 for boys/6:30 for girls for three weeks. The parish festival will take place either February 27/28 (TBD). HWC: Our Valentine s Day Luncheon will be held on Sunday, February 15 after the Divine Liturgy. Please call Chris Bachas or Connie McMahon for reservations. (RESERVATIONS REQUIRED) The HWC will match the proceeds from the Free Will Donation and send to the St. Nicholas Shrine in NY. Lunch is for member and 1 guest. ORDER of AHEPA- Adult members of our community are invited to join the brothers of the Order of AHEPA on Saturday evening, February 14, beginning at 7pm at the AHEPA House, as we celebrate "Apokries" (the Orthodox tradition of the preparation period prior to Great Lent), as we host our 3rd Annual "Apokriatiko Glendi" or Masquerade Party.
