1 Chapter 37 Nouns of the Third Declension Part 4 - All forms 37.1 In the three previous chapters we met all the cases of the Third Declension nouns. This chapter shows complete declensions for the various families. There are no new endings to learn The πατήρ and ἀστήρ families, Masculine and Feminine nouns with a stem ending in -ρ The stem of the ἀστήρ family ends in -ερ Singular Nom. πατήρ ἀνήρ ἀστήρ VOC. πάτερ ἄνερ ἀστήρ Acc. πατέρα ἄνδρα ἀστέρα Gen. πατρός ἀνδρός ἀστέρος Dat. πατρί ἀνδρί ἀστέρι Plural Nom. πατέρες ἄνδρες ἀστέρες Acc. πατέρας ἄνδρας ἀστέρας Gen. πατέρων ἀνδρῶν ἀστέρων Dat. πατράσιν ἀνδράσιν ἀστέρσιν 1. εἰσήλθοµεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ ἀνδρός. (Matt. 12:10) 5. ὁ φιλῶν πατέρα ἢ µητέρα ὐπὲρ ἐµὲ The one loving father or mother above me οὐκ ἔστιν µου ἄξιος. is not worthy of me. ( φωνῆσαι = Aorist Infinitive Active of φωνέω - I call, speak) (Matt. 26:34) ( The position of τρὶς is ambiguous. The phrase could mean "before the rooster crows thrice, you will deny me." or "before the rooster crows, you will deny me thrice." From subsequent events, Matt. 26:69-75, I would use the latter.)

(Acts 8:27) 4. καυχώµεθα ἐπ' ἐλπίδι τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ. We rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. (Rom. 5:2) 5. ἡ γὰρ σφραγίς µου τῆς ἀποστολῆς For you are my seal of apostleship ὑµεῖς ἐστε ἐν κυρίῳ. in the Lord. (1 Cor. 9:2) 6. καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτῇ, Mὴ φοβοῦ, And the angel said to her, "Don't be afraid, Mαριάµ, εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ. Mary, for you found favor with God. ( φοβοῦ = Imperative Middle of φοβέοµαι = I fear, am afraid ) (Luke 1:30) 37.6 The πόλις and βασιλεύς group Masculine and Feminine nouns with stems ending -ι or -υ Singular Nom. πόλις βασιλεύς VOC πόλι βασιλεῦ Acc. πόλιν βασιλέα Gen. πόλεως βασιλέως Dat. πόλει βασιλεῖ Plural Nom. πόλεις βασιλεῖς Acc. πόλεις βασιλέας Gen. πόλεων βασιλέων Dat. πόλεσιν βασιλεῦσιν 1. οἱ µαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου νηστεύουσιν... John's disciples fast καὶ δεήσεις ποιοῦνται. and make petitions. (Luke 5:33) 2. ἄνδρες Nινευίταις ἀναστήσονται ἐν The Ninevite men will rise up in the (time of) τῇ κρίσει µετὰ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης judgment against this generation καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αυτήν. and will condemn it. ( Ἰησοῦς Xριστος ) ἐν ᾧ ἔχοµεν τὴν (Jesus Christ) in whom we have deliverance, ἀπολύτρωσιν, τὴν ἄφεσιν τῶν ἁµαρτιῶν, (and) the forgiveness of sins, who is ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου. the image of the invisible God. (Col. 1:15) 4. ὁ Παῦλος... ἔκραζεν.., Paul shouted, "Men, brothers, I am being Ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί,... περὶ ἐλπίδος καὶ judged about the hope and the ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν ἐγὼ κρίνοµαι. resurrection of the dead." (1 Cor. 14:6) 37.7 The ἰχθύς and βοῦς families - Masculine and Feminine nouns with a stem ending -υ or -ου Singular Nom. ἰχθΰς βοῦς VOC. ἰχθΰ βοῦ Acc. ἰχθΰν βοῦν Gen. ἰχθύος βοός Dat. ἰχθύϊ βοΐ Plural Nom. ἰχθύες βόες Acc. ἰχθύας βοῦς Gen. ἰχθύων βοῶν Dat. ἰχθύσιν βουσίν 1. ἢ καὶ ἰχθὺν αἰτήσει - Or if he (should) ask for a fish - he won't give µὴ ὄφιν ἐπιδώσει αὐτῷ ; him a serpent, will he? (Matt. 7:10) 2. Ἄκουε, Ἰσραήλ, κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡµῶν Hear (O) Israel, the Lord Our God κύριος εἷς ἐστιν, καὶ ἀγαπήσεις κύριον is one Lord, and you shall love the τὸν θεόν σου ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας σου Lord your God from (with) the whole of καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ψυχῆς σου,... your heart, and with the whole of your καὶ ἐξ ὅλης τῆς ἰσχύος σου. soul and with the whole of your strength. (Mark 12:29-30, Deut. 6:4-5) 3. Ὑποκριταί, ἕκαστος ὑµῶν τῷ σαββάτῳ Hypocrites, on the Sabbath οὐ λύει τὸν βοῦν αὐτοῦ... doesn't each one of you loose his ox καὶ ἀπαγαγὼν ποτίζει ;.... and leading (it) give drink (to it)? Oὐκ ἔχοµεν ὧδε εἰ µὴ πέντε ἄρτους We do not have here (anything) except καὶ δύο ἰχθύας. five loaves and two fishes. (Matt. 14:17) 6. οὐ πᾶσα σὰρξ ἡ αὐτὴ σὰρξ, Not every flesh (is) the same flesh, but ἀλλὰ ἄλλη µὲν ἀνθρώπων, ἄλλη δὲ σὰρξ (there's) one of men, and another flesh of κτηνῶν, ἄλλη δὲ σὰρξ πτηνῶν, cattle, and another flesh of birds, ἄλλη δὲ ἰχθύων. and another of fish. (1 Cor. 15:39) ( πᾶσα = "each, every" - Feminine Nominative Singular of πᾶς, πᾶσα, πᾶν - each, every)

5 37.8 The σῶµα, ὕδωρ, φῶς, πυρ, and οὐς families Neuter nouns with stems ending in a consonant. The irregularities which appear in these declensions are due to "hidden" letters which disappeared due to contractions before the time of the GNT. Singular Nom. σῶµα ὕδωρ φῶς οὖς πῦρ Acc. σῶµα ὕδωρ φῶς οὖς πῦρ Gen. σώµατος ὕδατος φωτός ὠτός πυρός Dat. σώµατι ὑδατι φωτί ὠτί πυρί Plural Nom. σώµατα ὕδατα φῶτα ὦτα πῦρα Acc. σώµατα ὕδατα φῶτα ὦτα πῦρα Gen. σωµάτων ὑδάτων φώτων ὤτων πύρων Dat. σώµασιν ὕδασιν φωσίν ὠσίν πύρασιν 1. αὐτὸς δὲ Ἰωάννης εἶχεν τὸ ἔνδυµα αὐτοῦ John had (his) clothing ἀπὸ τριχῶν καµήλου. from camel's hair. (Matt. 3:4) ( αὐτός with a Proper Name - an Aramaicism ) 2. Ὃς ἔχει ὦτα ἀκούειν ἀκουέτω. Who has ears to hear, let him hear. (Mark 4:9) 3. ὁ πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου The one drinking from this water διψήσει πάλιν. will thirst again. (John 4:13) 4. ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Xριστοῦ The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ (be) µετὰ τοῦ πνεύµατος ὑµῶν. with your spirit.
