John K. Lardas *** ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH OF THE WTC ΝΑΟΣ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΥ ΤΟΥ WTC Ήχος πλ.β Εωθινόν Ζ St. Panteleimon This Saint, who had Nicomedia as his homeland, was the son of Eustorgius and Eubula. His father was an idolater, but his mother was a Christian from her ancestors. It was through her that he was instructed in piety, and still later, he was catechized in the Faith of Christ by Saint Hermolaus (see July 26) and baptized by him. Being proficient in the physician's vocation, he practiced it in a philanthropic manner, healing every illness more by the grace of Christ than by medicines. Thus, although his parents had named him Pantoleon ("in all things a lion"), because of the compassion he showed for the souls and bodies of all, he was worthily renamed Panteleimon, meaning "allmerciful."on one occasion, when he restored the sight of a certain blind man by calling on the Divine Name, he enlightened also the eyes of this man's soul to the knowledge of the truth. This also became the cause for the martyrdom of him who had been blind, since when he was asked by whom and in what manner his eyes had been opened, in imitation of that blind man of the Gospel he confessed with boldness both who the physician was and the manner of his healing. For this he was put to death immediately. Panteleimon was arrested also, and having endured many wounds, he was finally beheaded in the year 305, during the reign of Maximian.Saint Panteleimon is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is held in special honor among them, even as Saint George is among the Martyrs

St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 2:1-10 TIMOTHY, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory. The Gospel of Matthew 9:27-35 At that time, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.as they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. 4 Η νηστεία του Δεκαπενταύγουστου Από 1 Αυγούστου μέχρι και 14 Αυγούστου. Νηστεύουμε προς τιμήν της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου.Η νηστεία είναι αυστηρή. Ψάρι τρώμε μόνο στην εορτή της Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος μας (6 Αυγούστου). Άν η 15η Αυγούστου συμπέσει Τετάρτη ή Παρασκευή τότε γίνεται κατάλυση μόνον ιχθύος. Η νηστεία είναι εντολή του Θεού. Η πρώτη.η πιο παλιά από όλες. Την έδωκε στον Αδάμ μέσα στον παράδεισο. Το νόημα της νηστείας ήταν: με το όπλο της νηστείας να συνηθίσουν οι άνθρωποι στην υπακοή στο Θεό και στην πάλη κατά του διαβολου.ο Xριστός, ετόνισε ακόμη περισσότερο την αξία της νηστείας.είπε: "Το γένος τουτο ουκ εκπορεύεται ει μη εν προσευχή κι νηστεία". Δηλ. με τη νηστεία πολεμάμε τον διάβολο και τον νικάμε.κατά τους Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας "Δεν αρκεί η αποχή από τροφές, αλλά ας νηστεύσωμε νηστεία αρεστή στο Θεό. Αληθινή νηστεία είναι η εγκράτεια της γλώσσας, η αποχή από το θυμό, αποχωρισμός από τις επιθυμίες, από την συκοφαντία, το ψέμα, την επιορκία". ( Μ. Βασίλειος) "Νήστευε, όχι μόνο από ψωμί, κρασί, κρέατα, και άλλες τροφές, αλλά περισσότερο από κακούς λογισμούς". (Νείλος Αγκύρας)"Αυτός είναι ο σωστός τρόπος να νηστεύουμε, η επίδειξη καλών έργων, η ελεύθερη από πάθη γνώμη".(κύριλλος Αλεξανδρείας)Οι παρακλητικοί κανόνες της Θεοτόκου.Το Δεκαπενταύγουστο είναι μια περίοδος του Εκκλησιαστικού έτους, κατά την οποία η ορθόδοξη ψυχή στρέφει τα μάτια με βαθειά κατά-νυξη προς την Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο. Επί δεκαπέντε ημέρες, πριν από την εορτή της Κοιμήσεως, σημαίνουν οι καμπάνες την ώρα του δει-λινού και τα πλήθη των πιστών πάνε να ψάλλουν τον Μικρό και τον Μεγάλο Παρακλητικό Κανόνα. Ανάλογη κατάνυξη έχει βέβαια και η περίοδος των Χαιρετισμών της Παναγίας. Αλλά ενώ στους Χαιρετι -σμούς κυριαρχεί ο υμνολογικός τόνος, η θριαμβική δοξολόγηση των απείρων χαρίτων της «Μητρός του Θεού γενομένης», στους Παρα-κλητικούς Κανόνες του Δεκαπενταυγούστου κυρίαρχος τόνος είναι το πένθος και η οδύνη της βαρυαλγούσης ψυχής του πιστού που ζη-τά παράκληση και παρηγοριά από την Παναγία.Οι Παρακλητικοί Κανόνες, ο Μικρός και ο Μέγας η απλώς η Μικρή και η Μεγάλη Παράκληση - επειδή δια των ύμνων αυτών οι πιστοί παρακαλούν την Παναγία να ακού-ση και να ικανοποιήση τα αιτήματά τους - ψάλλονται, εναλλάξ, δη-λαδή την μία μέρα ψάλλεται η Μεγάλη και την άλλη η Μικρή. Μόνο κατά τους εσπερι-νούς των Σαββάτων και της Εορτής της Μεταμορφώσεως του Κυρίου δεν ψάλλον-ται οι Παρακλήσεις και τούτο επειδή το περιεχόμενό τους είναι πέν-θιμο και ικετευτικό και δεν συμφωνεί προς το χαρμόσυνο ύφος των εορταστικών αυτών ύμνων. Εκτός, όμως, από την περίοδο του Δεκα-πενταυγούστου η Μικρή, ιδίως, Παράκληση ψάλλεται συχνά, «εν πά-ση περιστάσει και θλίψει ψυχής», είτε στους ιερούς Ναούς, είτε και κατ' οίκον, από τους πιστούς, οι οποίοι επιθυμούν να ικετεύσουν δι' αυτής την Θεοτόκο και να επικαλεσθούν την μεσιτεία της.η δε διάκριση των Παρακλήσεων σε Μικρή και Μεγάλη οφείλεται αποκλειστικώς και μόνον στην έκταση, το μέγεθος των τροπαρίων. Τα τροπάρια, δηλαδή, της Μικρής Παρακλήσεως είναι μικρότερα και συντομώτερα από εκείνα της Μεγάλης.Η Μικρή Παράκληση είναι ποίημα κάποιου υμνογράφου, ο οποίος κατ' άλλους μεν ωνομάζονταν Θεοστήρικτος και ήταν Μοναχός, κατ' άλλους δε Θεοφάνης. Όπως φαίνεται, όμως, πρόκειται περί του ιδίου προσώπου, το οποίο έγινε Μοναχός και από Θεοφά-νης μετωνομάσθηκε σε Θεοστήρικτο. Η Μεγάλη Παράκληση είναι έργο του Θεοδώρου του Β, του Δουκός, Βασιλέως της Νικαίας, του επονομαζομένου Λασκάρεως, ο ο- ποίος έζησε περί τα μέσα του 13ου αιώνος και είναι πολύ μεταγενέστερος του Θεοστηρίκτου, του Μοναχού.Οι δύο Παρακλήσεις, πλην του Κανόνος, περιλαμβάνουν στην Ακο-λουθία τους και Ψαλμούς, δεήσεις υπέρ των ζώντων πιστών, υπέρ των οποίων τελούνται, και Ευαγγελική περικοπή. Το περιεχόμενό τους είναι ικετευτικό, συγκινεί τους πιστούς, διδάσκει και προτρέπει αυτούς να προστρέχουν με θάρρος και εμπιστοσύνη πάντοτε προς την Κυρία Θεοτόκο, την Μεγάλη Μητέρα τους, για να βρίσκουν πα-ρηγοριά και να λαμβάνουν βοήθεια στις ανάγκες του.προς την Κυρία Θεοτόκονάς ψάλλουμε και μεις με πίστη και εκ βά-θους καρδίας τις ιερές Παρακλήσεις και μαζί με τους ιερούς υμνωδούς, ας επαναλαμβάνουμε: «Βλέψον ιλέω όμματί σου και επίσκεψαι την κάκωσιν, ην έχομεν, και δεινών συμφορών και βλάβης και κινδύ-νων και πειρασμών ημάς λύτρωσαι, αμερήτω σου ελέει», με την ακρά-δαντη βεβαιότητα ότι «δεν θα παρίδη την πενιχράν δέησίν μας, τον κλαυθμόν και τα δάκρυα και τους στεναγμούς μας, αλλά θα πληρώση τας αιτήσεις μας», για να δοξάζουμε Αυτήν μετά πόθου πάντοτε.

5 The Fast of the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos For the first fourteen days of August during each year, the Holy Orthodox Church enters into a strict fast period in honor of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary. The eminent Orthodox theologian, Father Sergei Bulgakov, beautifully expresses the high regard which the Orthodox Christians have for the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, for her special role in the salvation of mankind, when he affirms, The warm veneration of the Theotokos is the soul of Orthodox Piety. St. John of Damascus, one of the great Orthodox fathers, pointed out that when the Blessed Virgin Mary became the Mother of God and gave birth to Christ, the Redeemer of Mankind, she became the mother of mankind. We call the Virgin Mary Theotokos, from the Greek, which means The Birth-Giver or the Bearer of God. This is the highest title that can be bestowed upon any member of the human race.the Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, was blessed amongst women, and she was chosen to bear the Savior of our souls. We, therefore, as Orthodox Christians, consider her to be the Queen of all the saints and the angels.knowing that she holds such a high place in the Kingdom of Heaven and that she is eternally present at the throne of God interceding for mankind, we, as good Orthodox Christians, must pray for her love, guidance, and protection. We must never forget to ask for her intercessions in times of sickness and danger, and we must constantly thank her for her care and her prayers in our behalf.every year the Orthodox Church sets aside the first fourteen days of August in honor of the Virgin Mary. This fast period is climaxed on August 15th, when the Church gathers to celebrate the Great Feast of the Dormition (Falling- Asleep) of the Theotokos. During this fourteen day fast period, the Orthodox Church prescribes that the Paraclesis Service be held in honor of the Mother of God.The word paraclesis has two different meanings: the first is consolation, from which the Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete, or Consoler ; the second is supplication or petition. The Service of the Paraclesis to the Theotokos consists of hymns of supplication to obtain consolation and courage. It should be recited in times of temptation, discouragement or sickness. It is used more particularly during the two weeks before the Dormition, or Assumption, of the Theotokos, from August 1 to August 14. The theme of these Paraclesis Services centers around the petition.. Most Holy Mother of God, save us.if you have a problem or if something is burdening your soul, if you feel spiritually uneasy and if you are not at peace with yourself and with those around you, then, you should come to the Church during the first fifteen days of August and ask for the intercessions of the Mother of God. Even if you are fortunate enough to be one of those very few who are at peace with themselves and with God, then those blessed ones should come to these services and thank God and His Blessed Mother for the blessings that they have bestowed upon you and your family.since these Paraclesis Services to the Theotokos are primarily petition for the welfare of the living, let the whole Church pray for you during the first fifteen days of August and especially on the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos on August 15th. Don t let your laziness and your apathy cause you to miss this great blessing and inspiration that the Church can bestow upon you. Let the peace and holiness that only the Mother of God can give you enter into your life. Let us lay aside all earthly cares, and let us truly, during these fifteen days, participate in the fasting and prayer life of the Church so that we can taste and see that the Lord is good and so that we may fully experience the spiritual blessings that the Church offers to us at this holy time. Blessed is he whom He shall find watching. Come and pray to the Theotokos with us and with the Church and by her prayers and intercessions, may our souls be saved! MOST HOLY THEOTOKOS, SAVE US!
