This generalisation must however be modified by consideration of altitude, which lowers temperatures by about 5 C per 1,000 metres and of marine influences which give cooler summers and warmer winters near most of the coastline and especially on the west coast, where Paphos is located. Snow falls only in winter, mostly on the Troodos Mountains in the central part of island. Frosts are rarely severe but are frequent in winter and spring inland, although the maritime areas of Paphos are rarely affected. Most rainfall occurs between November and March. In Paphos town, average high and low temperatures in early December typically range between 20 C and 10 C, respectively. On average, 8.8 days in December are rainy, while up to 186 hours of sunshine can be expected, even considering December has some of the shortest days in the year. 3
