St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy 2:1-10 TIMOTHY, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory. The Gospel of Luke 8:26-39 At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

4 Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος Ο Οκτώβριος είναι ταυτισμένος στη μνήμη του ελληνικού λαού με τη γιορτή του αγίου Δημητρίου.Ο άγιος Δημήτριος είναι ένας από τούς πιό λαοφιλείς αγίους, όχι μόνο στην Ελλάδα αλλά και σε όλο τον ορθόδοξο κόσμο, όπως φανερώνει η συχνότητα του ονόματος Ντμίτρι, Ντουμίτρου κλπ. Φαίνεται πώς αυτή η δημοτικότητα δεν είναι άσχετη με την αίσθηση της συνεχούς παρουσίας του Αγίου ανά τους αιώνες, όπως πιστοποιείται από τις εμφανίσεις του και τα θαύματά του.όπως είναι γνωστό, κέντρο της λατρείας του Αγίου είναι η Θεσσαλονίκη, όπου μαρτύρησε και όπου έχει ανεγερθή από τα πρωτοβυζαντινά χρόνια μεγαλοπρεπής ναός προς τιμήν του. Η Θεσσαλονίκη έχει, ιστορικά, πολλούς λόγους να τιμά τον Άγιο Δημήτριο και από νωρίς άρχισαν να καταγράφονται εκεί τα επανειλημμένα θαύματά του. Η συγγραφή μιάς πρώτης συλλογής θαυμάτων αποδίδεται στον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Ιωάννη, λίγο μετά το 600 μ.χ. και μιά δεύτερη, ανώνυμη, γράφτηκε γύρω στο 680 μ.χ. Οι ιστορικοί έχουν αντλήσει ποικίλες πληροφορίες από αυτά τα κείμενα. Πέρα από το θρησκευτικό τους ενδιαφέρον αποτελούν ανεκτίμητη πηγή, ιδιαίτερα για τις μετακινήσεις των Σλάβων τον 6ο-7ο αιώνα, και για τή ζωή στή Θεσσαλονίκη την ίδια εποχή, καθώς, όπως σημειώνει ο P. Lemetrle, όσα αναφέρουν είναι για μάς νέο υλικό που δεν είναι γνωστό από καμιά άλλη πηγή. Τό 1979 ο Lemetrle προέβη σε νέα κριτική έκδοση και σχολιασμό του έργου και στή δεκαετία του 1990 είχαμε δύο εκδόσεις στην Ελλάδα με κείμενο και νεοελληνική μετάφραση. Η πρώτη από το Κέντρο Αγιολογικών Μελετών της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεως Θεσσαλονίκης, σε επιμέλεια του αείμνηστου καθηγητή Π. Χρήστου, και η δεύτερη από τις εκδόσεις Άγρα, σε επιμέλεια του καθηγητή Χ.Μπακιρτζή, με εξαιρετική μετάφραση της Αλόης Σιδέρη. Η δεύτερη έκδοση εκτός από τα εκτενή σχόλια (περίπου 90 σελίδες) του επιμελητή, περιλαμβάνει σχεδιαγράμματα, 40 φωτογραφίες και τέσσερις μελέτες για τα «Θαύματα του Αγίου Δημητρίου» των Lemetrle, Speck, και Μπακιρτζή.Ορισμένα θαύματα αναφέρονται σε θεραπεία σωματικών ασθενειών, άλλα στή φροντίδα του Αγίου για το ναό του στή Θεσσαλονίκη και άλλα στην προστασία της πόλης από εχθρικές επιδρομές. Τά κείμενα, η γραφή είναι τόσο υψηλού επιπέδου, με τέτοια καλλιέργεια του λόγου και τόση εκφραστική δύναμη, που αποτελούν απόδειξη της υψηλής πολιτιστικής στάθμης της πόλης κατά την πρωτοβυζαντινή περίοδο. Απευθύνονται σε δεύτερο πληθυντικό πρόσωπο, σάν σε δημόσια ομιλία ή κήρυγμα, και σε πολλά από αυτά ο ομιλητής επικαλείται τή μαρτυρία των ίδιων των παρισταμένων για την επαλήθευση των λόγων του. Πρόκειται, δηλαδή, για γεγονότα που συνέβησαν στή διάρκεια της ζωής του συγγραφέα, τα οποία μπορούν να επιβεβαιώσουν οι ακροατές του.από τα είκοσι θαύματα που περιλαμβάνονται στις Συλλογές Α` και Β` (υπάρχει και τρίτη μεταγενέστερη Συλλογή), μπορούμε να αναφέρουμε ενδεικτικά το 14ο, που είναι από τα εντυπωσιακότερα. Βρισκόμαστε στο Σεπτέμβριο του 586μ.Χ. και ένα πλήθος Αβάρων και Σλάβων, ίσως εκατό χιλιάδες, επιτίθεται στή Θεσσαλονίκη. «Σάν θανατηφόρο στεφάνι περικύκλωσαν την πόλη και δεν φαινόταν ούτε ένα σημείο της γής, όπου να μήν πατή βάρβαρος. Άξιζε τότε να δής αντί χώμα ή χλόη ή δέντρα τα κεφάλια των αντιπάλων το ένα πλάϊ στο άλλο και μάλιστα συνωστισμένα να επισείουν εναντίον μας για την επαύριον τον αναπόφευκτο θάνατο», γράφει ο συγγραφέας των «Θαυμάτων». Η κατάσταση ήταν τραγική καθώς είχε προηγηθή λιμός, που αποδεκάτισε τον πληθυσμό της πόλης και επιπλέον η ξαφνική εμφάνιση των εχθρών απέκλεισε εκτός των τειχών πολλούς άνδρες που βρίσκονταν στούς αγρούς για τον τρύγο. Τό χειρότερο, οι περισσότεροι από τούς επίλεκτους της φρουράς έτυχε να έχουν πάει μαζί με τον έπαρχο σε άλλα μέρη για δημόσιες υποθέσεις.οι εχθροί εγκατέστησαν τα πολιορκητικά μηχανήματα, σιδερένιους κριούς και τεράστια πετροβόλα και «άρχισαν να εκτοξεύουν πέτρες ή μάλλον βουνά ολόκληρα-, οι δέ τοξότες βέλη σάν χειμωνιάτικες νιφάδες, ώστε κανείς από τούς υπερασπιστές του τείχους δεν μπορούσε πιά να ξεπροβάλη χωρίς κίνδυνο και να δή τί γινόταν έξω». Οι Θεσσαλονικείς κατελήφθησαν από απελπισία, αφού δεν υπήρχε καμία απολύτως ανθρώπινη δυνατότητα να σωθούν. Μόνο καταφύγιό τους η προσευχή και οι παρακλήσεις προς τον Άγιό τους να ικετεύση τον Θεό. Καί πράγματι, ο Άγιος Δημήτριος παρεμβαίνει με συγκεκριμένα περιστατικά σε διάφορα στάδια της πολιορκίας... Τήν έβδομη μέρα της πολιορκίας οι εχθροί ετοιμάζουν την τελική επίθεση, ελπίζοντας ότι η σφοδρότητα της εφόδου θα τρομοκρατήση και θα απωθήση από τις επάλξεις τούς υπερασπιστές. Ο συγγραφέας βρίσκεται ο ίδιος στο ανατολικό τείχος (περίπου στή σημερινή οδό Εθνικής Αμύνης). Άς του δώσουμε το λόγο για τή συνέχεια: «Κι ενώ εμείς είχαμε κυριευθή από φοβο δεινό για την τύχη που μάς περίμενε, ξαφνικά, γύρω στην όγδοη ώρα της ίδιας ημέρας, όλοι μαζί οι βάρβαροι που είχαν περικυκλώσει την πόλη, έφυγαν τρέχοντας με βαρβαρικές κραυγές προς τούς λόφους εγκαταλείποντας τις σκηνές μαζί με όλα τους τα υπάρχοντα. Καί τόσος ήταν ο πανικός που τούς είχε καταλάβει, ώστε μερικοί από αυτούς έφυγαν άοπλοι και χωρίς χιτώνες. Έπειτα αφού παρέμειναν περί τις τρείς ώρες στα γύρω βουνά (...), με τή δύση του ήλιου κατέβηκαν πάλι στις σκηνές τους και άρχισαν, κατά πρόνοια του Αθλοφόρου, να σκυλεύουν ο ένας τον άλλον, με αποτέλεσμα πολλοί από αυτούς να τραυματιστούν και να πέσουν νεκροί. Έπειτα, αφού πέρασε εκείνη η νύχτα μέσα σε απόλυτη ησυχία και όχι όπως οι προηγούμενες και φάνηκε η αυγή, (...) από το αμέτρητο πλήθος δεν φαινόταν ούτε ένας».τί είχε συμβεί; Οι Θεσσαλονικείς δεν γνώριζαν. Ούτε ο συγγραφέας, ο οποίος δεν παρασύρεται να μιλήση για οπτασίες και πράγματα που δεν έχει δή ο ίδιος. Στό σημείο αυτό, κατά έναν «μοντέρνο» θα λέγαμε τρόπο, γίνεται μιά αλλαγή αφηγητή στο κείμενο και διαβάζουμε την περιγραφή του ίδιου γεγονότος από την πλευρά των επιδρομέων, ορισμένοι από τούς οποίους την άλλη μέρα αυτομόλησαν και ζήτησαν καταφύγιο στην πόλη. Συνομιλώντας με τούς αξιωματούχους της ανέφεραν ότι μετά τα χθεσινά γεγονότα βεβαιώθηκαν ότι μέχρι τώρα ο στρατός είχε μείνει κρυμμένος στην πόλη, διότι την όγδοη ώρα άνοιξαν οι πύλες και επιτέθηκε πάνοπλος εναντίον τους, γι αυτό και έτρεξαν όλοι πανικόβλητοι προς τα βουνά περιμένοντας εκεί μέχρι που βράδιασε και ο στρατός επέστρεψε στην πόλη.

5 Τότε αποφάσισαν όλοι οι επιδρομείς να φύγουν βέβαιοι ότι την επόμενη αυγή το στράτευμα θα εξορμούσε πάλι εναντίον τους. Όταν οι Θεσσαλονικείς ρώτησαν τούς φυγάδες ποιόν είδαν επικεφαλής του στρατού, αυτοί απάντησαν, «έναν άνδρα πυρόξανθο και λαμπροφορεμένο με λευκό ιμάτιο, πάνω σε λευκό άλογο», υποδεικνύοντας τή γνώριμη σε όλους εικόνα του Αγίου Δημητρίου, που σώζεται μέχρι σήμερα σε ψηφιδωτό. Χύνοντας δάκρυα χαράς και αγαλλίασης όλη η πόλη ανέπεμψε τότε ύμνους στον Αθλοφόρο Άγιο και ευχαριστίες εκ βάθους ψυχής προς τον Θεό.Ο σύγχρονος αναγνώστης, ζώντας σε εποχή ορθολογισμού και δυσπιστίας, πλησιάζει τέτοια βιβλία με επιφύλαξη, με κυρίαρχο το ερώτημα: είναι άραγε αλήθεια όλα αυτά;ωστόσο το ίδιο ερώτημα είχαν και οι πρόγονοί μας, που έζησαν σ αυτόν τον τόπο τα βυζαντινά χρόνια. Είναι λανθασμένο και υπεροπτικό να θεωρούμε ότι στα χρόνια που δημιουργήθηκε η κορυφαία πολιτιστική σύνθεση ελληνισμού και χριστιανισμού οι άνθρωποι ήταν απλοϊκοί και ευκολόπιστοι.αντίθετα, ήταν μορφωμένοι, κάτοχοι της κλασσικής παιδείας και είχαν και αυτοί την ίδια με μάς ανάγκη αποδείξεων για όσα υπερφυσικά ισχυριζόταν ο κάθε αφηγητής.γι αυτό και το κείμενο των «Θαυμάτων του Αγίου Δημητρίου» είναι διανθισμένο με πολλές λεπτομέρειες, που επιτρέπουν τον προσδιορισμό του χρόνου, του τόπου ή του σημείου της πόλης, όπου διαδραματίζεται το κάθε θαύμα.φτάνοντας στο τέλος αυτού του βιβλίου ο σύγχρονος αναγνώστης μένει με πολύ λίγες αμφιβολίες για την ιστορικότητα όσων αναφέρονται.καί αισθάνεται πολύ προνομιούχος, διότι στην εποχή μας, για πρώτη φορά, τέτοια έργα είναι πλέον προσιτά στο ευρύ κοινό. St. Demetrios the Great Martyr Eusebius, the archbishop of the city of Thessalonica, had a vision which I wish to relate to you. Before the barbarian hordes began to attack the city of Thessalonica, the aforementioned priest saw himself, in a dream, sitting in the city theatre along with a great crowd of servants. And when he was wondering why he was seated in such a lewd place, and was rising in his desire to leave, he saw a tragic actor standing on that part of the stage where the stories are recited, and who said to him, "Wait, since I must lament you and your daughter." He said to him, "Do not bother, since I do not have a daughter, nor do I deserve lamentation." But the other said, "You do indeed have a daughter, and a mother of many children; and you must lament her." Then the chief realised that he was referring to the city as his daughter, and said, "I adjure you, by God, to lament neither me nor her." And when he expressed his wish for a third time to engage upon a lamentation, and was not allowed [to do so] by the bishop, [the bishop] woke from his sleep and realised that the tragedy did not have a good meaning. Indeed, after a few days had intervened, an innumerable horde of barbarians surrounded Thessalonica and the bishop realised that the vision which he had seen was true. When the barbarian tribe was devastating the district of Thessalonica, as we have seen above, the inhabitants of the neighbouring disticts were stricken with famine on account of their attacks. Finally, indeed, when almost as many inhabitants had died as much as a result of famine as a result of fighting, the barbarians devised a plan and suddenly attacked the city thinking that it was devoid of defenders, because the situation was so, and had been desolated by famine. For we were few, and they did indeed exceed the number of locusts. Then, when they had constructed siege-ramparts, iron battering-rams, catapults, and great tortoise-like protective covers, they covered eveything with the hides of oxen and camels in case they should be destroyed by fire hurled down by the citizens. Moreover, they pressed so heavily upon the citizens that no-one expected to survive alive. They besieged the city for a long time, until they exhausted all their supplies, both for beast and man. Having decided to attack the city altogether on the morning of the following day, they surrounded it on every side with their machines of war. And now when the city was about to be captured, they saw a crowd of armed men, like a swarm of wasps, exiting it, whom a certain red-haired youth, most beautiful to behold, led, bearing the sign of the cross in his hands. A white horse bore him. These charged forward and attacked them. Terror-stricken, the [barbarians] left the city and sought the protection of flight. However, a few, who were not able to flee, remained there half-dead. When these had been seized by the citizens, they were asked by them [col. 723] why so great a multitude was fleeing without any reason. The barbarians then [replied], "The crowd of men whom you hid, together with their most brave commander, put our companies to flight." But [the citizens] realised that the commander was the martyr Demetrius who had put the enemy to flight together with an army of angels. Then when they had collected the spoils of the enemy, they flocked together to the church of blessed Demetrius and gave great thanks to God Who had freed the city from their enemies as a result of his intercession. When several men were talking about the flight of the barbarians, one of our brothers rose and said to them, "When one night this week, after the morning prayers, I was standing in the temple of saint Demetrius the martyr and praying before his holy shrine, a great tiredness came over me so that I was neither entirely asleep nor was I wholly awake. And behold, two men appeared, terrible to behold, and said to the guardian of the temple, "Where is the lord of this temple?" He replied, "He remains in that ciborium." They [said], "Go, tell him that we have been sent to him." He went, and they followed him. And he called him, saying, "Saint Demetrius, two soldiers are present who have been sent to you by their lord." And the most holy martyr of Christ immediately appeared from within, and stood next to the doors, and was also apparent to unworthy me. I fell on my face since I could not bear to look upon his angelic countenance. For his appearance was not like his appearance as depicted in the ancient paintings, but his face emitted rays of light just like the sun. Although I was lying facedown, nevertheles I listened intently to what they were saying to one another. And I heard that the men greeted the saint respectfully. He said to them, "The grace of God be with you. Why have you been sent to me?" The men said, "Our lord sent us to your holiness to tell you this: "Hurry out and come to me, since your city is being surrendered to its enemies." When I had heard this, stricken by sorrow at his words, I rose upon my hands, and looking up a little, saw the the face of the most pious martyr greatly saddened. And when a moment had passed, I saw tears running down his cheeks from his eyes. Then the guardian of the temple said to the two youths whom he had led in, "Why have you afflicted my lord? If I had known your intention beforehand, I would not have brought you to him." Then God's saint said to his attendant, "These are my servants, and they have told me what they had been ordered [to tell me]." The holy martyr then said in a loud voice, "O Lord Jesus Christ, you said: "I do not desire the death of a sinner, but that he should be converted and live", and again, "The angels of God rejoice at the repentance of one sinner." And although you are the Lord of all the angels, you gave up your life for the redemption of sinful men. You, Lord, entrusted that city and its citizens to me, that I might live there forever with them and guard them. So how can I abandon them in such great need? or with what face will I observe the destruction of my fatherland? What life will I have when my citizens have been destroyed? Just as I was with them in spirit when they were prospering, so I will not desert them when they are in danger. Whatever they deserve to suffer, I better deserve to suffer with them. But You, Almighty and [col. 724] Merciful God, You who heard Jonah in the whale's stomach, and the three boys in the blazing fire of a furnace, and Susanna in the midst of a false charge, hear Your people and free them from destruction by barbarians." And thereupon a voice was heard sent by the Lord, "Let it be done to them according to your will." And with great joy, he immediately paid his respects to the two youths who had been sent to him, and thanked God that He had heard him. Know without doubt that you have received life and victory through this saint, with the help of our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns through ages of ages. Amen.
