2 WELCOME INTRODUCTION In a year of Celebrating Hellenism at this year s Adelaide Hellenic Cultural Festival Odyssey it is with great pride that the Greek Orthodox Community of SA Inc presents the 19th Annual Greek Film Festival here in Adelaide. Although cinematic practice is a mere hundred years old, theatrical tradition has its roots in ancient Greek Drama over 3200 years old, with the dramas of Dionysus and later the tragedy and satyr plays of Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Euripides and Sophocles. Modern Greece has its own tradition of cinema, experienced as early as 1897 in Athens, but none more so than during its golden years in the 50s and 60s. Finos Films in particular brought us so many classics. Who can forget, I Pseftra and Ypolohagos Natassa? Not only were our films recognised by us but internationally. Melina Merkouri was awarded at the Cannes Festival for her performance in Never on Sunday by Jules Dassin and music composer Manos Hatzidakis was awarded the Academy Award for Best Song, Ta Paidia tou Piraea for the same film. Greek actors become international stars as did our film makers. Nikos Koundouros was awarded with the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival for directing Small Venuses (1963). Zorba the Greek (1964) by Michael Cacoyannis, received three Academy Awards. Costas Gavras was nominated for an Academy Award in 1969 for his screen-writing and directing of Z. And we must also acknowledge the cult status of the works of Theodoros Angelopoulos. With such a rich history of which to be proud, it is time to celebrate our modern cinema with an outstanding program of some of Greece s most exciting new films including cutting edge features, powerful documentaries and new shorts This year the Greek Film Festival opens with Nisos 2, the follow up to the 2010 festival sell-out Nisos. Directed by Antonis Aggelopoulos (original directed by Christos Dimas), Nisos 2 continues the laughs as the heroes of the islands are revisited five years later. Just as exciting is the resurgence of powerful dramas with elements of realism, such as The City of Children (Yorgos Gkikapeppas) and Tungsten (Giorgos Georgopoulos), while in the shorts department, we could not go past Anthony Maras The Palace. We are also thrilled to be closing with Tony Krawitz s Dead Europe, the film adaptation of Christos Tsiolkas book of the same name. See you at this year s Greek Film Festival. 4 CLOSING NIGHT OPENING NIGHT NISOS 2 (Νήσος 2) Dir. Antonis Aggelopoulos SPECIAL EVENT DEAD EUROPE Dir. Tony Krawitz The sequel to 2010 s Greek Film Festival Opening Night feature film continues the laughs with some unexpected twists and grotesque situations. Fast forward five years, and the heroes from Nisos, Babis (Vladimiros Kiriakidis) and Afroditi (Zeta Douka), prepare for release from jail. A long-term inmate starts blabbing about the existence of a treasure trove on the island that dates back to the Ottoman occupation, which, of course, tweaks their interest. Various alliances and spurious friendships emerge as they search for the buried treasure and reunite with the islanders we now know and love that includes the ghost of Olympia who has the whole island in a stir or is it actually Olympia? With an all-too familiar tone and Cycladic backdrop, Nisos 2 propagates what Christos Dimas original box office smash did so well, although with Antonis Aggelopoulos ably holding the directorial reins. Sydney Morning Herald Based on the novel by Melbourne writer Christos The Slap Tsiolkas and from the producers of Shame and Animal Kingdom, Dead Europe is a deep, densely wrought autopsy of Europe in which death hangs like a virus. Following the passing of his father (William Zappa), Isaac (Ewen Leslie) takes the ashes back to his father s birthplace in Greece where he finds himself on the trail of a buried family secret. An Australian of Greek parents who feels little connection with his ancestors, Isaac is drawn further and further down into the underbelly of contemporary Europe a cemetery of dark revelations threatening to tear his family apart. The film s dreaminess is captivating, it moves along like a thriller, which is a neat trick since the actual narrative is episodic and without any conventional suspense. Stelios Kammitsis Exclusion, violence, psychological cannibalism and consecutive power failures highlight a society forgotten in the dark A ticket inspector (Vangelis Mourikis) is looking for ways to rid himself of massive debts in order to keep his family together. A couple (Tasos Nousias and Kora Karvouni) are on the brink of separation. Two teenage boys (Omiros Poulakis and Promitheas Aliferopoulos, both from Burning Heads) wander aimlessly around the city in-between futile job interviews carrying an old revolver as a companion. All three stories unfold within the timeframe of a single day in compelling blackand-white. As the narratives intersect, they also change direction. Victims become villains and each person comes face-to-face with the consequences of their actions. Tungsten made a clean sweep of the awards Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Editing at last year s Cyprus International Film Festival. Three friends roam the streets of Exarcheia on a hot August night Phevos (Giorgos Kafetzopoulos), Savvas (Diogenis Skaltsas) and Andreas (Aineias Tsamatis) are in the final 12 hours of their life in Greece before they try for a new beginning in Berlin. As the evening becomes morning, their lives are changed forever and not in the way they planned. Kammitsis first feature film encapsulates the sense of helplessness, betrayal, frustration and alienation afflicting not just Greek youth but an entire society who see little hope in the future. They struggle to cope with a present they had no say in creating, and a yearning for how things once were, but will never be again. One inextricably violent end. A simple everyday story of little people trying to make it in the big world. Flix.gr This edgy drama follows a day-in-the-life of four pregnant couples in modern Athens, but with stories that differ drastically to the usual ones of hope and joy. One couple deals with a marital crisis, while another reconsiders a premature pregnancy while looking down the barrel of a mad man s gun. The draining realities of IVF unite and then tear apart two women who have shared the same man. An Iraqi immigrant, alone in her apartment, gives birth with the assistance of her stalker/ next door neighbour. Not for the faint-hearted, City of Children is a harrowing perspective on the dawning of new life against an Athens gripped by the hands of fate. Winner of Best Actress Award for Kika Georgiou, Best Special Effects and Best Script at last year s Hellenic Film Academy, as well as the Critics Award at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Filmmaker Filippos Tsitos follows the international success of Plato s Academy (Greek Film Festival 2011) with another straight-faced comedy and one of the most eagerly anticipated Greek films of Sotiris (disarmingly played by Antonis Kafetzopoulos, also from Plato s Academy) is a police interrogator with a conscience, bogged down by the weight of a heavy world on his shoulders. One day, he chooses to pardon everyone who s been driven to crime by necessity and, while hoping to save an innocent life, commits manslaughter. The only witness to his crime is a joyless cleaning lady, Dora, who becomes an unlikely ally in his attempts to save himself. Half the time you don t know whether to laugh or to cry. 7 DOCUMENTARIES DOCUMENTARIES KRISIS Dir. Nikos Katsaounis and Nina Maria Paschalidou CHILDREN OF THE RIOTS (Παιδιά των Ταραχών) Dir. Christos Georgiou A time capsule of Greek life during the IMF crisis the vision of many brought together as one. First there was the landmark The Prism GR 2011 project, in which a country tormented came together through 27 individual multimedia pieces. Now there is Krisis, the project s evolution into feature-length documentary form, weaving these short stories in a first attempt at open-source documentary filmmaking. The ability to tell and spread messages is being revolutionised through technology. Journalism is transitioning from the hands of a few to a wide range of people who have been empowered to tell their own stories from their own perspective. Fourteen of Greece s leading journalists and photojournalists take different angles to highlight Greece s most crippling financial crisis. They delve into the hearts of people from all walks of life in an impassioned attempt to tell it as it is. The first week we believed this would change the world. On the 6th December 2008, 15 year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos was killed by police while on a seemingly safe pedestrian street with his friends on a Saturday night. His death prompted thousands of young people to take to the streets in riots that lasted three weeks, setting Athens ablaze and consuming a nation in violence and chaos. Some of the children who witnessed his death and the running battles with the police, reflect on their worlds three years later. This deeply personal documentary focuses on how they were thrust into a conflict that changed, and continues to change, their lives. Produced for the Witness series on Al Jazeera. I was inspired to see that, despite what our young protagonists have experienced, they still hold on to the thin line of fading hope for a better future. Morgan Spurlock, director of Super Size Me The truth is, we have more people in the cemetery than in our homes. Cyprus When a young Turkish-Cypriot conscript soldier comes face-to-face with a Greek-Cypriot family in hiding, he confronts the brutal reality of war and his role in it. This is the premise behind rising Aussie filmmaker Anthony Maras stunning short film, which saw him and his film crew descend on the United Nations Buffer Zone in Lefkosia, Cyprus, to inject credibility into this searing war-time drama based on true events. Winner of two AACTA Awards, as well as the Best Australian Short Film gong at Flickerfest and both the Melbourne and Sydney film festivals. Riveting, suspenseful first class filmmaking. In just its short running time it manages to be every bit as accomplished, compelling and provocative as any fulllength feature. The Palace marks the emergence of a major filmmaker in Anthony Maras. When a foreign tourist (Bretherton) stumbles into town, the village mayor rallies the more cynical and hostile townspeople to convince Eric to stay. This student thesis film was shot in the village of one of the filmmaker s uncles (Mani, population of four) and selected for inclusion in the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. I had always wanted to make a film in Greece, and in 2011, despite many people warning me against it, I went ahead It was the best decision I could have made.
